On a Saturday evening in June 2025, Nicole Sadowski went for a run at a county boat ramp in southern New Jersey and did not come back. A seventeen-year-old sitting on the rocks under the fishing pier recorded forty-one seconds of what happened to her. Four days later she came out of the river three miles downstream.
There was a video. That was supposed to be the end of it.
Instead there was a trial, and at the trial the defense did not say that the video was false. It said that nobody could prove it was true — and it brought in a man with a named chair and a bestseller to say so, gently, at length, and without ever telling a lie I could catch.
The State spent thirty-four thousand dollars on the woman who did the actual work. The defense spent three hundred and eleven thousand on the man who explained why the work could not settle anything.
I sat in that courtroom every day for a month. This is what I saw, and what I found out afterward, and what I was not permitted to print.
