These Two Hearts

Rate this book
When the heart wants what it should not have… Settling into a new job at a hospital on the wild southern coast of Washington, Sara Patterson has carefully realized her cautious hopes for a steady, practical life. Education, check. Secure employment, check. Tumultuous attraction to an attractive drifter? Not on the list. Jessie Singer loves the way billiard balls roll over the green baize of a pool table and her dream of playing pool professionally keeps her wandering from job to job, and from woman to woman. But she keeps coming back, drawn to the coastal waters and mountain scenery. And to something she never expected. Two women think they know what they want from life—until their lives collide.

I have loved all Kenna White's books I've read previously, but this book was an enormous disappointment. It takes virtually the entire book for the central couple to get together. I'm talking there are like 5 pages at the end that they are together. They have no contact for months at a time and are suddenly in love after kissing one time. It seemed awkward and unrealistic to me. In addition, there are a few little side stories that don't have any relevance to the plot and they never go anywhere. Left me wondering if they were there just to add a few pages to the book. Of course I will continue to read Kenna White's books, but she dropped the ball on this one.

Sara Patterson works in the laboratory of a small hospital in Washington state. She meets Jessie Singer when the latter comes into the lab to have some tests run. And, uhh, love or something. To be honest, I just didn't care.

The premise sounds good, but the execution is seriously lacking. The only kudos I can give the author is the fact that the book is set in a hospital without either of the main characters being doctors (which is a rarity it seems). Annnnd that's about it. The writing style is poor; there is a lot of telling and not much showing. Sara goes on long internal monologues to get information to the reader, which is just boring. And there doesn't seem to be any feeling at all in the words. To be honest, I just skimmed most of the book before realizing that I honestly didn't care and DNFing the rest.

I waffled between giving this book one and two stars, but according to the Goodreads system one star means that I didn't like it, and I definitely didn't like this book at all.

I have read a few books by Kenna and absolutely loved them, so was excited to continue with the quick reads & get tore into These Two Hearts. However, this one disappointed me in comparison.

While I recognise Sara is the biggest focal character, majority of the book focuses on her practicality and how cautious and boring she is compared to some of the others. Which gets a little boring I have to admit. Jessie seems more interesting though it doesn’t give much focus on her and makes her out like a womaniser simply as she’s had more girlfriends than Sara. Yet she’s actually sweet and very caring! I wish there was a bit more time spent on her.

After months of not talking or very little conversation exchanged your on the last three chapters when they are ‘in love’ and it just seems rushed. A big build on boring Sara and the last three, mainly the last one really talks about their ‘love’. The parts that should be gratifying really… just aren’t.

It’s definitely not like any of her previous books I have read & though it won’t stop me reading more in the future. I just feel meh about this one!

You know you're in trouble when you find one of the main characters really unattractive (emotionally).

I am still bewildered as to what the reader was meant to find appealing about Sara who seems annoyingly timid and elitist (she expresses negative sentiments about considering bar tender / bar manager a 'real' profession on multiple occasions). Ugh. I'm going to stop because I could fill pages with 'annoying lead character' rant.

The other lead, Jessie, is fine enough but doesn't get nearly enough 'air time' in the book.

Storyline wise, one of the main things we are meant to be interested in is whether Sara will buy a scooter Jessie is selling. Yup.

I groaned, and not in a good way when I limped to the final page (it was like a car crash - I just had to see if it would get better). Don't do it to yourself peeps. :(

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this book. I enjoyed the fact that the romantic timeline was more realistic than in most romances. I enjoyed some of the characterizations. I even liked the chemistry of the two main characters somewhat. But something about it felt really flat. It didn't really feel like a romance, it really seemed like a story about Sara's life, a part of which was a friendship that develops into a romance with Jessie -- however there isn't enough interesting things happening in her life to make it worth reading about really. I'm not sure what the point of the book was.

I really liked this book. Writing was good, the angst of will they won't they was good.
