Rate this book

A basic introduction to the general concepts and ideas of gestalt therapy. While the title is edgier than many other texts on gestalt (who doesn't want to be alive!?), I found the content and writing rather dull and unengaging. I would expect the zest of authors who are themselves risking being alive to show through in the writing, if they wrote it based on their own experience. That is unfortunately not the case. For experiments I'd recommend Awareness: Exploring, Experimenting, Experiencing by John O. Stevens. For zest: Don't Push the River by Barry Stevens.

Though for fairness and completeness, I did find one new experiment I really enjoyed in this book.

I wasn’t much familiar with Gestalt-oriented psychotherapy when I began this book, but I found it to be a great introduction. I quickly found that the great thing about the Gestalt approach is that you don’t need to belong to any theory or particular school of therapy to practice it. The techniques vary and can be applied with almost any type of client, in almost any setting, for a variety of reasons. It is an experimental therapy, which also makes it fun and at times unpredictable. I was able to try a lot of the techniques myself, and was sometimes surprised at what came up. I’ve since used the methods in this book – such as focusing and chair work - with my clients, with positive results. I’ve added many of these exercises to my skill set as a therapist, and would recommend the book for anyone who wants to do the same.
