Collecting 17 chilling horror and supernatural tales, Kill For A Copy boasts a foreword from Shaun Hutson, 'the Godfather of Gore' himself.
Dark Chapter Press has gathered a motley crew of authors most of whom are at the early stages of their writing careers, to showcase their grotesque works.
With visions of dark, fantastic worlds, disturbed minds and beasts beyond imagination, this collection will shock, scare and grant the occasional guilty chuckle as you immerse yourself in the nightmarish landscape forged by these newcomers.
In Kill For A Copy, Dark Chapter Press has unleashed a volume so essential to fans of horror fiction, who knows what lengths you will go to, to get your hands on a copy.
This new collection of short stories is from a series of fairly new or unknown writers. Please do not let this deter you!! Setting aside Jack Rollins and Stuart Keane, I have never read of of the work from the other authors in this anthology.
From the offset Rollins and Keane catch our attention immediately by grabbing us around the literary scruffs of our necks with their tales Home Sweet, home and Bon Appetite respectively. Both of which are well written and examples of authors understanding the truest concept of horror.
I wont mention all of the stories, but the collection continues and shoots off in many different angles and introduces sub genres. Each story told with a unique spin and delivery. Here is my pick of my favourite five;
Be Careful What You Wish For by Sharon Higa - a short but punchy tale of an ill fated hitch hiker.
Bovine Rule by SL Dixon - horror meets dark humour as the cows start to go wild.
Tactile Living by Audrey EL Coots - This clever story brings us a woman living her dream lifestyle with the help of a state of the art virtual reality game. What could possibly go wrong?
The Herald Of Our Times by Matthew Teah - an extremely well written story about an apocalypse scenario, written from a totally unique perspective.
Towards the end of the collection we see the intensity being increased until it explodes into the final story in the book, a story which i found a particularly uncomfortable read - And trust me, I do not scare easily!
Hell awaits by Feind Gottes - a story that just about nailed my entire worst fears in the most horrible way possible.
In summary, a great release from a fairly new press that really showcases the talents of some great undiscovered writers.
"Again I have really enjoyed this anthology. Some of the stories were absolutely superb and some not so. That’s what you get with an anthology though. That’s why they are such a good way for you to make your mind up if you want to read more from a particular author."
Kill For A Copy is an ecclectic mix of horror short fiction that has something that'll entertain just about any horror fan. The themes range from gorehound/splatter punk to supernatural and a bit of everything in between. The thing that I enjoy about short story anthologies is that it is a great way to discover new authors. In that regard Kill For A Copy doesn't disappoint. I have found several authors that I plan on following. In particular Feind Gottes' story 'Hell Awaits' which is on par to Edward Lee in terms of gore/sexuality really stood out to me. I think that it is because the author not only wrote some very graphic gore/violence scene but never forgot the character's psychological experience through out it all. I think it is the psychological aspect of the narrator's torment and anquish that makes this such a strong piece. Maddness in Death Valley stood out to me as well because of its outdoors setting in an area I've lived/traveled as well as the Lovcraftian influences of bizarre creatures and madness. It's an unsettling story and really made me think and engaged my imagination. I found the stories to provide a quick reprieve from my hectic life and I would recommend this collection to any horror fan out there.
I had a lot of fun reading this collection of horror stories! Full disclosure, I was a backer for this anthology but I am really pleased with the collection of stories in this anthology. Featuring stories from new and established horror authors, I think what impressed me the most was the sheer spread of different types of horror that can be found in a Kill For A Copy. Whether you like slash and gore or hauntingly and subtleties, these stories provide all that is necessary for your screams. I am new to the horror genre and I especially loved the tales of the supernatural and demonic. I'm looking forward to the next rounds of collections from Dark Chapter Press!
I really enjoyed these stories and loved reading through the authors I already know and 'meeting' new authors! These were amazing stories that are still running through my mind, I highly recommend to any fan of modern horror! Scary, gory, unique ideas from great authors, keep it up!
If you haven't heard about Dark Chapter Press odds are you will soon. I received a copy of their debut anthology Kill For A Copy in exchange for an honest review and this is a massive anthology. Three Hundred and two pages of horror, and splatterpunk. The problem though is that in a volume this size there's bound to be some filler right? Surprisingly the answer is no, and as I read it I knew that Rob McEwan not only has an eye for talent but he knows horror. This is for the true horror fan and while some the authors here may be new they won't be for long. Each story packs a punch and the volume flows extremely well.
If you've read my reviews you know that I never judge these just on the stories. It would take to long to go into each and everyone and to pick a favorite from a volume this good is nearly impossible. This features every aspect of the horror genre so no matter what style you like Kill For A Copy has you covered. As a fan I loved this volume and look forward to seeing individual releases from these authors. As a small press Dark Chapter has announced their arrival and I doubt that they'll be small very long. This is high quality stuff kids, and you won't be skipping through hoping that the next story doesn't suck. You have stories here by Stuart Keane, Jack Rollins, and a slew of others.
Horror it seems is never going to go away, and with volumes like this that's a good thing. Fans will drool all over this one and if you're just getting into horror do yourself a favor and pick this one up. You will not be disappointed. Dark Chapter Press is a press that you want to seek out. I have a feeling that this press will be around for a long time.
I liked most of the stories but really did not like one of them which in my opinion was immaturely gratuitous. I don't like graphic sexual horror that could be deemed as sexist. I can cope with gore but this sort of subject doesnt sit right with me when its written in this particular style. Just being honest here. I am far more interested in psychological horror and bought this book as a fan of Jack Rollins really - his Victorian style horror is really well written and you should check it out. The rest of the short stories in this compilation were fine and some showed particularly great promise.
I received a copy of Kill for a Copy in exchange for an honest review.
Because Kill for a Copy is an anthology comprised of seventeen short stories, I decided it would be best laid by my bedside table so I could read it at night (with the hope that it didn't scare me too much it kept me awake!) What I found inside was a wonderful plethora of stories that ranged on the horror spectrum from light-hearted humour to downright nasty but I enjoyed each and every one of them. Each author has added a piece of their own voice and in their own story, brought Kill for a Copy to life.
Home, Sweet Home by Jack Rollins was the first in the book and as I read this curled under the covers, I literally could not put it down. I had to know what would happen.
My favourites in the anthology were Bon Apetite by Stuart Keane, Redwood by Angus Fenton, Bedlam Betty by Brian Barr and Tactile Living by Audrey E. L. Coots but each and every one of the stories brought something different to the anthology and made me think. Definitely worth the read if you love a good yarn!
Rollins ... Keane ... And lots of other awesomeness ... Oh My! A wonderfully horrific roundup of treats for every horror fan. From creepy to bizarre, I recommend all the stories in this collection. The title dragged me in, and these amazing authors' words held my attention. No need to kill for a copy, just pick one up and start reading.
