The Interior Castle by St. Teresa of Ávila is a timeless spiritual classic for the modern reader.
In The Interior Castle, St. Teresa of Ávila invites readers into one of the most profound explorations of prayer and union with God ever written. Originally penned in the 16th century, this spiritual classic continues to guide souls toward a deeper, more intimate relationship with God, mapping the interior life as a series of dwelling places within the soul, each one drawing the reader closer to divine union.
This Ascension edition presents the official Carmelite translation in its newly released second edition, offering language that is both faithful to the original text and accessible to today's reader. Approachable commentary from Fr. Michael-Joseph Paris, O.C.D. and Sr. Mary Clare Mancini, O.C.D. accompanies the text throughout, helping readers unlock the depth of Teresa's teaching and apply it to their own prayer life.
This is the same translation being read on Season 6 of Ascension's Catholic Classics podcast, available on the Ascension App, where the full text is read aloud alongside day-by-day reflections designed to deepen your spiritual journey as you read.

beautiful reflection on the interior life of the believer
I was assigned this text in graduate school class on Christian ethical formation 17 years ago but never got to it because incoikdnt keep up with the reading! I came to it again in my spiritual direction certificate program this year, I found myself praying regularly for God’s hell in following it because it is not light reading. It has the mystery and beauty of a well-maintained hedge maze seen from on high. while offering a level of disorientation as I came down to ground level and tried to wind my way through it. The imagery seems so elusive but perhaps that is intentional, as it reminded me that the relationship with God that sits at the center is not earned through merit, bug a gift that takes patience and persistence to unwrap.
One word echoes throughout the pages of this book... humility. That is because it is not a book about humility, but about being close to God and removing barriers to experiencing his presence. The interior castle metaphor reminds me of the same principle the tabernacle is layed out in.
