The Hidden

Rate this book
In the quiet wilds of Devon, Lady Amalie Northbrooke has carved out a life on her own terms—breeding her cherished basset hounds and protecting Mere Manor, the estate left to her by tragedy. Though unseasoned in society, she is no stranger to independence…until danger finds her.

When her long-absent brother, Lord Westlake, returns after eleven years, his homecoming should mend what time has stolen. Instead, his arrival unsettles her. Familiar places feel altered. Trusted routines begin to unravel. And loyalties she once took for granted begin to fracture.

A violent encounter draws Amalie into the orbit of Dr. Richard Cartwell, Lord Haven—steady, perceptive, and impossible to ignore. In his company, she catches her first glimpse of a world beyond the one she has always known—and of a connection as unexpected as it is undeniable.

Then Mere Manor's fragile peace is shattered by an unexplained death, and Amalie can no longer dismiss the quiet dread creeping through her home.

With only Dr. Cartwell as an unlikely ally, she is drawn into a web of secrets where every answer leads to greater danger, every shadow hides another threat, and someone is watching her far too closely.

Because the truth is not merely hidden.

It waits with claws and teeth.

THE HIDDEN is the fourth book in The Secret Tales series, and the first one about a new set of characters, although they are still linked to the first three books. I don't think you have to read them as this stands by itself nicely, but for deeper insight into various characters, you may want to. Plus, they're great reads.

Amalie is at home in Mere Manor. She's never 'come out' to the Ton, and is happy that way. She has her dogs and her horse. What more could she want? Apart from her parents still being alive and her brother back from who knows where, that is. Her aunt and uncle live with her, as she will only receive her inheritance when she turns twenty-five, which is still three years away. Her peaceful life begins to go awry when she is held hostage when someone holds up the Post Office. Not all of it is bad, though, as she meets Dr Richard Cartwell.

This was a great read, and I loved how Claire was in it, even if it was only for a short while. Amalie is a good-hearted woman who refuses to allow the rules of the time to run her life. She will do as her heart wishes because, after all, she lives out in the wilds of Devon. Richard was definitely her perfect partner, in that he only obeyed the rules as and when it suited his purposes. He was both caring and compassionate, while still having that protective vibe over Amalie. One thing he didn't do was stifle her.

The mystery side of things was well-written. None of it came as a surprise apart from Lydia, but I was content to just read and let things develop in their own time, rather than trying to guess ahead. I was still left with questions at the end, but it was more about various happenings or characters than the mystery itself.

I'm so glad we're getting Jenny and Alex's story next, and I can't wait to continue with this series. Definitely recommended by me.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

This is book 4 in The Secret Tales series, but it can be read as a stand alone to the other three. I really enjoyed them all, though, so from a personal point of view, I do recommend them all. Books 1and 2 got 5 stars and book 3 dipped to 4.

But book 4 jumps straight back up to 5 stars. I loved this book!

I'm big enough and ugly enough to admit this: I love that these books are clean! I will always read a steamy book, and be happy about it, but I'm finding THESE books do not need it. The point is delivered beautifully!

I will admit, I knew something was off when Alex returned, as soon as he did. I did not see that playing out how it did, so well played there, Ms Brand. I do like being kept on my toes.

I loved how the relationship between Amalie and Richard grew naturally. After that first shocking encounter, they both found themselves pulled to the other and I loved that there was some pushing against the rules of the time.

I loved the animals in this book! The descriptions of the dogs and the ferret were fabulous and I could see those animals doing what was said on the page.

I loved the supporting cast: Jenny and George are Richard's siblings and they are an absolute cracker of a pair.

Both Amalie and Richard get a say, and a single chapter for a third person. Not saying who, though. But their book is next and I can't wait to read it, especially after reading the short snippet at the end of this one!

I can honestly say, I loved this book and if you like clean, historical romances, these books are for you.

The Hidden was an enjoyable historical romance with a strong mystery running through it. I liked the atmospheric setting of Mere Manor and the sense that something was not quite right from the moment Amalie’s brother returned after eleven years away. The familiar world she has created for herself begins to feel increasingly uncertain as strange events and fractured loyalties start to emerge.
Amalie was an appealing heroine. She is independent and capable, having built a quiet life breeding her beloved basset hounds and caring for the estate she inherited, but she is also inexperienced when it comes to the wider world. I enjoyed seeing her pushed beyond the boundaries of the life she knows, particularly after she meets Dr Richard Cartwell.
The romance between Amalie and Richard develops alongside the mystery, particularly as he was supportive as Mere Manor seemed more fraught with danger. Their growing connection felt natural, while the unexplained death and the secrets surrounding the estate kept the story moving and added plenty of suspense. There were some twists I was able to anticipate, but I still enjoyed following the clues and trying to work out what was really happening.

This is book 4 of a series, each being a stand-alone story. The book was well written, the characters well developed. While the storyline, drew me in, I wanted more action. It moved a bit slowly for me. I also had a problem with Amalie not recognizing some obvious clues regarding her long-lost brother. I did love her inner strength, her caring and warm nature. Richard was a welcome surprise for his caring and tenderness standing alongside his protective nature. Amalie and Richard did belong together and those close to Richard saw that bond and supported them. I did love seeing their friendship develop into something so much stronger. The ending seemed to take forever to unfold, I did get impatient. I am intrigued by Amalie’s character and will read another story from this series. It was a story worth the time to read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book started out a little slow for me but quickly picked up the pace. I enjoyed joining Richard and Amelie on the journey to their happily ever after. The story also had me hooked and provided a couple plot twists I never saw coming. I very much recommend this book, as well as the other books in the series.

I enjoyed the read even with a few errors - one being a repeat of Hugh’s death. The two main characters do not care for the Ton society so are very believable. There is a fair amount of action - attempted murder and murder, attempted kidnapping, arson, fake identities. I enjoyed the immediate chemistry between the FMC and MMC. Her aunt and uncle seemed worthless. I enjoyed the animals and young Oliver. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I think this is the first of this author's work that I've read. It won't be the last. The Hidden was very well written. The characters were engaging, not only Amalie and Richard, but also the more minor characters had depth and believability. The storyline was fast paced and action filled with unexpected twists. I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure and kept reading till well past the time when those with more respect for tomorrow were already asleep. I regret nothing. I recieved an advance copy of this book and am choosing to review.

A yoga-practising Regency heroine! That is an unusual feature in this otherwise genre-adjacent story, brimming with pets, drama, disaster, and romance. We learn a bit about dog breeding, but mostly the main characters are thrown from one disaster into another. The twists and turns are reminiscent of the „gothic novels“ from the time period. But if you don't look at the plot too much under the microscope, it is a fast-paced, entertaining novel.

I received an arc copy from booksirens and all opinions are of my own.

The Hidden by Sanna Brand is the fourth book in The Secret Tales series, offering a captivating blend of Regency romance, mystery, and suspense. Set against the tranquil backdrop of Devon, the story follows Lady Amalie Northbrooke, a woman who has built an independent life for herself at Mere Manor, finding comfort in her beloved basset hounds. However, her long-absent brother's return and a series of unsettling events gradually disrupt her peaceful existence, drawing her into a mystery filled with secrets, unexpected connections, and lurking dangers.

What I particularly loved was the author's writing, which beautifully captures the atmosphere of the historical era. The descriptions, social nuances, and setting lend the narrative an authenticity that makes it easy to immerse oneself in the Regency period. The prose is engaging and evocative, bringing the world of the characters to life. The illustrations throughout the book are another wonderful addition, enriching the reading experience and adding so much depth to the overall story.

Lady Amalie Northbrooke is undoubtedly one of my favourite characters I have come across in a book. I particularly enjoyed her independence and the way her circumstances gradually push her beyond the boundaries of her familiar world. Her growing connection with Dr. Richard Cartwell brings emotional warmth to the unfolding mystery, making the romantic elements a lovely complement to the suspense.

I also loved how the author gradually transforms the familiar surroundings of Mere Manor into a place of uncertainty, where long-held loyalties begin to fracture and every revelation raises new questions. The balance between romance and mystery keeps the narrative engaging, while the historical setting lends it a distinctive charm.

The Hidden is a delightful read for anyone who enjoys historical romance with a compelling mystery at its heart. With its immersive writing, memorable characters, beautiful illustrations, and intriguing plot, it makes for a wonderful addition to The Secret Tales series.

The Hidden is the 4th book in the Secret Tales series of Resurgence Suspense Romances by Sanna Brand.

Focussing on the romance between, young woman Lady Amalie Northbrook who love Basset hounds and looking after Mete Manor, because of her parents death and her brother going away is being looked after by her aunt and uncle.

While the male character is Dr Cartwell who rescuers Amalie when she is held hostage during the robbery.

If your looking for a typical Regency romance with dancers and small gatherings and witty dialogue, then The Hidden is not for you.

This is because Sanna Brand’s The Secret Tales which this is the fourth book the series is not that type of romance and while there are some of those scenes this is a mystery suspense romance. With all three aspects of the novel getting equal billing.

However if you are reading The Hidden for the mystery and suspense, you may be disappointed, while, they do form a major element of the novel, due to the main genre being romance the mystery and suspense are the weakest part of the novel.

While this is not a problem for readers who reading The Hidden for the romance it is worth making a note of.

Having said that The Hidden By Sanna Brand the 4th book in the Secret Tales series, is the perfect addition to that series or an enjoyable standalone novel.
