I traded nine days of my life for my brother's freedom. Sébastien Rivaux wants more. I'm Odile Sanche. I restore damaged silk for a living. When my brother's gambling debt puts him at the mercy of the Rivaux family, my hands are the only thing I have left to bargain with. Sébastien needs his dead father's ceremonial coat rebuilt before the Halloween Masque. A double must wear it beneath the chandeliers and convince a ballroom full of dangerous people that the family is still under its patriarch's control. I can make the illusion hold. His terms are nine days on the third floor of his New Orleans townhouse. No outside contact. No leaving without him. Finish the coat, and my brother's debt disappears. Behind his black mask, Sébastien watches every stitch. He sees the scars I keep covered. And in the hours between fittings, I begin to want the man who holds the key. But the house is full of secrets, and the coming masquerade will test more than my work. Before midnight, I need to know whether the freedom he promised me was ever his to give. If he wants me to stay, he'll have to let me leave. A standalone Halloween dark mafia romance with a hard-won happy ending.
I did not like the main characters. Odile and Sebastien didn't have chemistry. Sometimes, I found their conversations boring. Odile is strong and did not let Sebastien intimidate her. Both had scars and painful memories.
