With INTO THE STORM, Lisa Bingham wove a spellbinding romance set during the Blitz. Now, she turns her eye to the Pacific in this gorgeous WWII tale of courage, fear, and love on an island doomed to fall.

At the dawn of WWII, the Philippines is a haven for those intent on shedding their pasts and reinventing themselves. Lt. Riley Gilhouley—The Great Gilhouley—keeps the troops well stocked in contraband as he seeks the attention of Maj. Rosemary Dodd, a by-the-book officer who leads her nurses with expert care. Ex-priest John Macklin searches for absolution, but finds himself tangling with Glory Bee O’Halloran, a stripper hired to take off just enough clothing to throw the troops into a frenzy.

But when, mere hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attack the Philippines, the island haven explodes into the chaos of battle.

Thrown from the passion of Gilhouley’s arms into the harsh realities of war, Rosemary begins to question everything she once held dear. As their stolen moments together blossom into something more, Gilhouley’s secret missions behind enemy lines threaten to end what has only begun. Trapped, Glory Bee has nowhere to run, putting herself and her secret, unborn child in danger. All too quickly, the only thing separating her from the advancing enemy is a fallen priest with a haunted past who promises to keep her safe. The two of them are drawn together in a desperate bid for survival, but John knows his growing love for Glory Bee is at odds with his need to strike back at an old enemy.

Set amid the heartbreak of a besieged country waiting in vain for help to arrive, this stunning novel blends a meticulous eye for history with limitless heart. Bingham, a master of the genre, has penned a novel that will stand the test of time.

It took me a while to read this, not because it was not good, but because once I started I had an exceptionally busy week (& of course because I read two books at the same time) At the end of the week, my very closest friend showed up at my doorstep – in this case who could actually read?

Before WWII, the Philippines were known as a place to shed your pasts; to reinvent yourselves. Among those here are Lt. Riley Gilhouley, known as The Great Gilhouley, a man who finds he is able to keep the troops well stocked in contraband. Also here is the one person who has caught Gilhouley’s eye, even though she is a decade his senior, Maj. Rosemary Dodd. Dodd is a by-the-book officer who leads her nurses with expert experience & care, although she sees herself as the one person who will never be paired with another. Ex-priest John Macklin lives here while he searches for absolution due to his trials at Nanking. Finally, Glory Bee O’Halloran, a stripper hired to take off just enough to throw the troops into a frenzy; while her married Senator boyfriend, who knows she is pregnant keeps her out of his hair. The Senator bills this as a get-away in paradise to Glory, even though he is well aware that Japanese hostilities could kill his former girlfriend.

Within hours of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attack the Philippines, an American territory; and the paradise turns into a battlefield. Gilhouley who has finally made his intentions known to Rosemary is sent on a secret mission; Rosemary must keep her nurses calm as hundreds of injured are brought to the hospital for treatment, and Glory Bee is left in the hands of John, the caretaker at the plantation she where she is a guest.

Thrown from the passion of Gilhouley’s arms into the harsh realities of war, Rosemary finds herself questioning everything, while reliving their stolen moments. Gilhouley’s secret missions becomes a race to save his troops behind enemy lines, while threatening to take what he had just found with Rosemary. The only thing separating Glory Bee from an advancing enemy is a former priest with a haunted past who promises to keep her safe. While the couple is drawn together, Glory fears she will lose her first true love as revenge for the enemy of Nanking resurfaces.

This is not your typical romance, nor is it your typical war story; although the author takes you into a world where both happen simultaneously…….

After the Fall by Lisa Bingham is a historical novel that starts in early December of 1941 in the Philippines. Major Rosemary Dodd is in charge of the nurses at Fort Stotsenberg. She has been in the Pacific for twelve years and is celebrating another birthday. Her parents keep wanting to know when she will come home. At first they wanted her to marry and settle down, but now that she has hit 40 they want her to take care of them. Rosemary is attracted to Riley Patrick Gilhouley. He is assigned to the press corp and is known as the person who can get things. They two get together one evening and the next day their world will never be the same again.

Glory Bee O’Halloran is a strip tease artist. She has come to do a performance for the troops at Fort Stotsenberg before taking a hiatus (she is pregnant). John Macklin picks her up after the performance to stay at the sugar cane plantation he manages. Glory Bee is awakened by John the next day. Time to pack and move up into the owner’s hunting lodge in the mountains.

This book portrays the struggles of soldiers and civilians during the beginning of World War II in the Philippines. To me the best part of the book was the lovely ending. It was so sweet. I am glad that the author did not go into the horrors that the nurses suffered in Bataan and Corregidor. I give After the Fall 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it, but did not love it). I think this books main focus was romance. The instant attraction between two people. It is nicely written, great historical details, and lively characters. If you enjoy historical romance novels, then you will like reading After the Fall.

“After the Fall” by Lisa Bingham is a war-time novel set just before and during the fall of the Philippines to the Japanese. We follow Glory Bee O’Halloran as she deplanes in Luzon, Philippines to entertain the troops. Because she is pregnant she has been sent by her lover, a married senator, for a “vacation” to the estate of his good friend. The first night she stays at the plantation house, she meets John Macklin, the foreman. After the Japanese invasion, Glory Bee and John will be thrown together while trying to escape the enemy.

Major Rosemary Dodd is with the nursing corps stationed at Fort Stotsenberg. She and her nurses are in for the fight of their lives as the Japanese bomb and strafe the island before finally invading. Rosemary comes to depend on Lt. Riley Gilhouly, a member of the press corps. They become romantically involved and dependent on each other. During the coming months as they try to evade being captured by the Japanese, circumstances make it hard for them to be together. I marveled at the courage and selflessness of the nurses and doctors who risked their own lives to save fellow soldiers. Even though this is a work of fiction, I can easily see that these events could have created the same types of situations. I was loathed putting this book down when I had to. I just wanted to read the whole thing at one sitting.

I was sent a Kindle copy of this book by NetGalley.com in return for my honest review. You can find this review on my blog at http://wp.me/p2pjIt-h0. Other reviews can be found at http://imhookedonbooks.wordpress.com.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!

I chose to read this book because the subject matter is entirely different from most other historical books. This novel takes place in December, 1941, in the Philippines, just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. I had forgotten that, immediately after that attack, the Japanese bombed the Philippines. This is that story.
The Philippines, at that time, was a place where people came to get away from their old life and start anew. They were able to ignore past mistakes and change themselves into the person they wish to be.

There are many characters involved in this novel, and we are introduced to them all. Yet, Lisa Bingham, very cleverly, manages to weave all of these characters together so that we can, actually, feel what life was like for them before and after the attack. In fact, After the Fall reminds me of the old disaster movies like “Earthquake” and “Airplane” except it is not as soap opera-like those stories were.

Very few historical books are written during WWII even though most of our parents or grandparents lived during that time. And when they do write about that time, they rarely, if ever, focus on the Philippines. Because of that, I found After the Fall an interesting novel that explores the fears and the bravery of the men and women who lived there at that time.

This book broke my heart but Lisa Bingham put it back together again. I've never read a book about WWII. I learned a lot and was sadly disturbed by what humans are capable of doing to one another. However, the basic human spirit of survival, love and kindness will always prevail.
