Ben’s Wolf Surprise

There’s something unsettling in having to tell a one-night stand that you’re pregnant with his child. When you yourself are a man, it gets…let’s call it complicated.

Talk about an unexpected pregnancy

I could feel that this was the next of a previous series. Even though this is a new series the author really doesn't give very much background information. Possibly because the story is so short, only 661 locations. It still is an entertaining surprisingly poignant storyline. Since I am such a sucker for male pregnancy romances I am tempted to try out various authors when this is an important part of the story. Unfortunately there has been a glut of inferior mpreg titles. Weeding out the better stories is a mission I've tasked myself with.

This shifter tale features a young human, Ben whose one night stand leads to so much more. Often the physical impact of a pregnancy on the male is glossed over in other stories, but not here. The pain, uncertainty, weakness of acute morning sickness is described in detail. In this instance it is made much worse by the sufferer of the illness not being aware of the cause and initially suffering alone.

The shifter has no idea he is a father to be. All he knows is that he met and lost his mate. He is beyond upset. He is angry at himself for allowing his mate to leave and angry with his mate for leaving. But even more he is distraught at being separated from his mate. His desolation is felt by the entire pack. Luckily they both have friends who care deeply about them.Their reunion is fraught with desire, anger, happiness, and incredulity.

Unfortunately since this was such a short story there wasn't more development in several areas: background of main characters, the setting, their relationship after their reunion. I hope since this is the first book in a series there will be more written to answer questions raised. Also be forewarned this has a bit of a cliffhanger ending.

So I love mpreg. Love it. That’s why I’m able to give this so many stars. If I didn’t…

There were times that were fantastic. I loved Shad’s misery and Ben’s vomiting – call me cruel, go ahead! But it was fun and funny and a little bit sad and sweet.

The writing was unique if a bit uneven at times, but I enjoyed the overall story very much.

I wish we’d spent more time with the couple. I felt like it was just a tasty morsel of a story rather than a full fledged meal (or even a snack!).

I will definitely look for more from this author and I hope to see longer works in the future.

3,5 stars :) An interesting start to a new series, and I'll most definitely read the second book.

The pace of the story is fast. Ben and Shad meet at a club, they kiss, they want each other and Ben allows Shad to drag him home for a hookup. Nothing wrong with that. That's why people go to club, right?

Only, Shad isn't your usual one-night-stand. He's a wolf shifter and found his mate in Ben. Too bad that the mating heat is too strong for Shad to explain what he is and how much Ben means to him. Instead they have sex and fall asleep, and the next morning Ben vanishes before Shad is awake because, yeah, it was just a hookup, right?

Nope, Ben, it wasn't :D This story did it for me because I just love a good m-preg book. Maybe it's my weird sense of humor, but I even like it when the guys suffer through morning sickness, aching feet and all that. Seems only fair. Ben was so lovable and I wanted to hug and squeeze him.
Shad was...I wanted to throttle him. Honestly. His moping that his mate had left him (while he hadn't even explained to Ben that he was his mate), and his inability to pull himself together and search for Ben drove me crazy.

I would've loved a decent conversation between Ben and Shad. Shad, as a new alpha now that he had a pregnant mate, should've been able to sit down and talk with Ben about their mating, their future and their baby. Instead, Shad's father talk, the midwife talks, the friends talk. Shad faints and seems just swamped. Aside from the one-night-stand and the day they meet again after a couple of weeks, we don't have any interaction between the two MCs and that left me a bit disappointed and prevented the book from being a four or even five stars.

But I'm looking forward to the next book anyway because I want to meet the cub and Ben again :) And maybe Shad just needs some time to grow into his role.

Original Blog Post: Happy Happy Release Day!!! Review Request, Excerpt & Character Chat: Ben's Wolf Surprise (Second Pack of Cameron #1) by Bronwyn Heeley

For those who are familiar with my book preferences, I am a HUGE HUGE!!! fan of mpreg. When asked why, I have to admit: I WILL NOT SAY WHY!

I just love love love mpreg and author Bronwyn Heeley came up with a story that not only satisfied my cravings for the genre, but written it in such a way that sets it apart from the rest of the crowd. Let's just say, you'll read why when you do pick this one up. I will not spoil this!

For mpreg lovers, everything you thought and dreamed of, they're all here. And. More. Just. More. The scene stealers are the best, when the author actually addresses the issue of pregnancy. She managed to make me giggle through my own experiences and laugh evilly imagining the worst on a man. Oh yeah!

Oh, more of good news for fans. Don't get disappointed, we are getting more as this is a planned series of shorties sure to whet the appetite and make us drool hungrily for more.

Have mercy, Bronwyn Heeley.

Keep them coming!

Note: Recommended for mpreg fans.

Ben’s Wolf Surprise is a cute, sweet story that ultimately felt too short for me.

Shad and Ben have an ultra-hot encounter at Shad’s place, but when Shad wakes up Ben is gone. He’s distraught because Ben was his mate and he can’t live without him.

Ben doesn’t exactly have it easy after the hook-up because he’s extremely sick and can’t figure out why. Of course he doesn’t know that he just had unprotected sex with a shifter, or what the consequences could be of doing so.

This wasn’t a story to come in and expect any kind of realism, but that didn’t diminish the enjoyment. It was mainly played for laughs, especially with Ben suffering morning sickness. I also absolutely loved it when Ben pissed on a pregnancy test to confirm he was expecting.

This was well-written but I really wished I could’ve seen more of the couple together. As it was it was just a glance at their cuteness. It really wasn’t long enough to see if they could face true adversity or to get a feel for the author’s writing style.

One of my complaints is the use of word shift as a synonym for the word move. There were 27 occurrences of the word shift and at least twenty were used instead of move. In a shifter book it tended to be confusing because I had to stop and make sure it didn’t mean a character was transforming.

Interesting little start up story.. the details are a bit lacking in some directions and...

biggest problem of all. what the freakin hell is an ending like that? Don't find out or participate in the birthing...

Don't know if this will be one or not but nothing irritates me like having a cliffhanger (especially for a short story) and then made to wait way too long for it to pick back up... might as well reread previous to remember anything or just toss it off.
