A fire ignites a whirlwind of action and accusation in a swamp town that hasn’t seen excitement since the big lottery win twelve years ago. Little does reporter Chloe Keyes know that when she sniffs around for clues, she’ll end up facing her own demons while unsettling the very foundation of her hometown.

Chloe starts her day by pulling a gun on two intruders—and things only go downhill from there. Driving to Boyd’s General for her daily caffeine fix, she finds the place ablaze. When the flames die down, she uncovers evidence that points to a dire fate for her missing childhood friend, Hoop. He disappeared twelve years ago, on the same day his girlfriend was struck and killed by a car. The events have left a dark mark on Chloe.

Over the next two days, strange occurrences pile up: Chloe’s neighbor is found floating and bloated in Black Swamp; the head of a cosmetics conglomerate is arrested by federal agents; phone records point to a dead girl making calls; and a handsome stranger mystifies everyone he encounters. Through it all, the promise of a spectacular magic show captivates the local residents.

Close calls with gators, crossbows, and armed felons lead to a startling conclusion, complete with illusion, chicanery, and the most divisive trick of all: cold, hard truth. Will Chloe’s murky existence finally be clarified, or will she succumb to the demons that haunt her?

Once again McAneny has created a work that held my attention and my imagination throughout. I was creatively and intellectually stimulated throughout. McAneny seamlessly combines mystery with the everyday lives of those living in this little swamp town. The novel is extremely well written, full of eloquent descriptions and intriguing narrative.

Chloe was a fantastic main character that I not only enjoyed getting to know, but who truly invited me into her story. The way in which McAneny develops her, gradually and intimately, makes for a character that I truly felt I knew on a personal level. The events that she finds herself embroiled in are not only fantastically entertaining to read about, but also serve to further develop the characters.

McAneny is one of those rare authors who captivate me with each new release. Circled blows all those who came before out of the water. This is simply a must read novel for those who enjoy mystery and suspense.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Ugh. The premise of the mystery was compelling and the solution was ultimately satisfying, but the means of revealing that solution were so ridiculous, even stupid, that I was furious when I finished it. I was actually offended by the silliness of the ending. Plus, the characters rely on tired cliches and stereotypes, with the obese and manipulative town kingpin, the trashy blonde, and a "wise beyond his years" boy who talks like no actual preteen has ever talked before. Somehow, the author wanted me to get behind a heroine who purposely breaks a bottle of red wine over her friend's porous flagstone porch after he startles her. Do people really act like this in real life? I'm glad I don't know them.

My original Circled audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Chloe Keyes, a reporter and small-town resident of Black Swamp holds onto a dark moment in history.  One moment that has haunted her dreams and her very soul.  She knows better than anyone, that small towns have their deep dark secrets and her beloved Black Swamp is no different.

Faced with writing a “recap” story on the four lottery winners, the largest lottery win ever, Chloe learns firsthand how deep those secrets run and the secrets of relationships.

A gripping thriller filled with guns, knives, men in dark suits and an AARP gator that will keep you engrossed guessing who is behind the intrigue and mystery.  There are moments of humor followed by moments that shake the foundation of human faith.

Anne McAneny sets the stage for the small town secret and its "reveal" in such a way that will leave the listeners gasping!  McAneny builds her characters to larger than life but in such a way that her listeners cannot help but connect to them.  The story line is captivating with moments of humor, love and a deep resonating darkness of evil.

Laura Jennings, the narrator, provides a performance that is natural and precise.  Her easy, smooth flowing voice is soothing and captivating. Jennings was an excellent choice as a narrator as she owned the audio.

I highly recommend this audiobook if you enjoy mysteries, intrigue and small town relationships.  I look forward to more by Anne McAneny.

There were no issues with the audio or production quality of this audiobook.

‘The Week was the cruel scalpel that had redefined my childhood— the way tragedies always realigned the landscape of youth.’

Anne McAneny is that rara avis of a writer who creates a solidly entertaining story with as many unique aspects as the inside of a Faberge egg and then tells it with language that is equally as intoxicating as is the story she is weaving. There are many pages of both SKEWED and RAVELED, brilliantly novel mystery stories that pleads to be read repeatedly (or memorized) because the words are so magically strung together. From her bio we know that McAneny is a screenwriter of note (and that explains why this novel seems to plead to be adapted as a movie) but not all screenwriters can narrate strictly on the page without storyboards in head - simply dependent on the gift of writing well. Anne McAneny can.

To say Anne’s books are addictive would be an understatement. Each new release indicates yet more polish not only in her elegant prose but also in her outward spinning sense of intrigue that magnetically attaches to our attention span and will simply not release until book’s end.

The plot summary is well described: ‘A fire ignites a whirlwind of action and accusation in a swamp town that hasn’t seen excitement since the big lottery win twelve years ago. Little does reporter Chloe Keyes know that when she sniffs around for clues, she’ll end up facing her own demons while unsettling the very foundation of her hometown. Will Chloe’s murky existence finally be clarified, or will she succumb to the demons that haunt her?’

Closing the last page of this book it is obvious that Anne McAneny is one of the more gifted writers of the day. Highly recommended.

Like the pluff mud in the story, this book grabbed me and wouldn't let go until I was done.

I really enjoyed this book especially the setting and vivid imagery. The author really helped me to picture the events unfolding in my mind's eye. I guess I'm a sucker for small town mysteries because it was that small bit of information that made me want to listen to the book in the first place. I'm glad that I did.

While I figured out one of the book's plot points pretty quickly, there were still enough twists and turns questions to be answered that kept my interest at a steady high throughout.

While the author deserves much of the credit for the quality of the book, narrator Laura Jennings' performance was also fantastic. She narrates with sort of a hushed whisper or a sinister tone that lends itself perfectly to the intrigue of the story.

After listening to 'Circled' it made me want to hear from both author and narrator again in the future.

What a ride!!!

Fantastic story. Full of twists and turns and brilliant "wait, what?" moments where you turn back a page or two and re-read a section because you can't quite believe what just happened. It's the classic small-town whodunnit tale, given a new and compelling twist that will suck you in and leave you fighting sleep, burning dinner or late for work because you simply had to read just a few more pages.

The book was a good yarn with several interesting mysteries, and I liked the details of the swamp, but many of the characters were cliché caricatures and the way the big reveal played out was too fantastic to be believable. I was kind of offended at the caricature of the greedy, slimy, obese businessman nicknamed Quail the Whale. We also had the crazy old lady, the stupid secretary, the insensitive, sexy, female medical examiner, the stupid hick, criminal brothers, etc.

An engaging suspense with a magical ending!

Circled is a suspenseful and intriguing well-written story. The story moves along at a fast pace with a fresh and original plot. Anne’s writing is solid and nearly flawless. The characters are well developed and engaging. You can easily relate to the flaws of the characters and the skeletons that many have hidden in the closet. It is an unresolved past that is reaching for understanding and resolution.

This is a story that focuses on good against evil and how good can prevail in the end. It will unfold one page at a time until you get to the magical ending. You do not want to miss reading this book and seeing how the story unravels. A good story that is full of suspenseful twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Laura Jennings did a splendid job with the narration. She has a clear and crisp voice that is easy to follow. I thought she does a good job with the story, which led to a good reading experience.

This is the first book that I have read by Anne McAneny and will certainly not be my last. I was not disappointed at all. I recommend Circled to anyone that is looking for a good suspenseful and magical show that will keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing to the end.

Set by the Black Swamp of Beulah, South Carolina, Circled is a literary mystery with fascinating characters and twisted crimes, narrated by a protagonist who’s haunted by “The Week," a time of highs and lows in the life of Beulah. Now Chloe’s committed to writing a newspaper article, twelve years on. But who has commissioned the article? And who committed the latest crime to darken the swamp’s innocence?

The story’s told in past and present, with assumptions made and torn apart, mistakes leading to revelations, swampland yielding to care and evocative description, and broken hearts seemingly doomed to ever-deeper despair. By the end, the past will be hauntingly present to everyone concerned, and a seriously cool finale will light up the sky.

Circled isn’t just a crime novel or tale of unfulfilled romance. It’s also a novel of intriguing questions, where what we are encompasses what we were and what we will be, guilt and folly combine, and the snake swallows its tail. It’s a really cool read.

I am reviewing the audiobook narrated by Laura Jennings. I received a copy of this book from Audiobookworm in exchange for an honest review.
I had a really hard time getting into this book. I went back and re-listened several times but I had a hard time following it. Perhaps the narrator's voice was a little too soothing for me or the many flashbacks distracted me.
Nothing exciting has happened in the swamp town of Beulah, South Carolina since The Week 12 years ago when a young girl was hit by a car and killed, her boyfriend disappeared, and 4 local men won the biggest state lottery ever. Chloe, a reporter for the local newspaper was a friend of the girl and her boyfriend. She has been assigned a follow-up story on the big win but it evolves into a cold case crime investigation of a crime only a few people know was committed. I enjoyed the ending of the book, the big "reveal" that was done in a unique if not totally believable manner reminiscent of the old TV mystery shows.

Fantastic read! It took a while to be hooked but once I was, I couldn't put this book down. The characters were interesting, the setting was intriguing, and the storyline was full of surprises.

This book is a metaphor for illusion. There is the illusion of what we think we remember from our childhood, but the truth is different. There is the illusion of what people think they see, but what we see can be deceiving. There is the illusion of what we want to see, and of course the truth can be opposite. And there is the illusion of what people want us to see, and there is where the real cover-up begins.

Does our mind play tricks on us? Ms. McAneny does a great job navigating through all of these illusions and ironically presents the truth at the end of the book in a magic show! I enjoyed not really knowing what was truth and what was illusion while reading this.

So far, this is my favorite book from this author.

While crime fiction and thrillers are not my favorite genres, I thought this book was pretty good. The beginning was a little slow for me which made it harder for me to want to read but it picked up towards the end. I liked how the author went from real time to back when the accident happened. Usually that kind of distracts me from the present tense of the story but it seemed like whenever she went back in time she made it make sense when it went back to present time.

I thought the end of the book was the best part. I never saw that sort of ending coming. The way she had Chole find out that Race was actually Hoop was so interesting to me. I don't think I would have thought of that had she not gone back in time to explain what that word meant. I thought this was a well written book and would recommend it to anyone who likes an ending with a climax.

Didn't see that one coming. . .

The story begins vividly with a sweet girl who has a fresh and sweet outlook on life and her circumstances in life. The events that follow are so well written and vivid the story continues to capture you and draws you in. So well detailed, you feel as if you are there. Surprisingly, when the story reveals the who and why you are surprised to see who is who. The tenacity and strength in the characters especially the female lead, just love her moxy.

Hard to believe

Anne McAneny is a skilled writer, but this story was really far fetched, even for fiction. She used a lot of flashbacks. In some cases they were necessary, but in others they didn’t need to be included.

The story is set in a small town, and many characters were written as if they were based on a primer of what small town people are supposed to represent. The main character, Chloe, is supposed to be tough, but often comes across as self-absorbed and annoying.

I definitely preferred “Raveled”, another McAneny novel.

This has to be one of my top ten favorite books! It's a murder mystery, but right off the comedy sets in. There were times I was afraid of waking up everyone as I was laughing. But there is a love story/murder/mystery going on too. The book takes place in 2 or 3 days. It is about solving a 12 year old cold case. The ending was a little far fetched, but it all fit together well. And the mystery is solved. Loved it!!

This book had me hooked right from the beginning. Such a great murder mystery with a twist. The narrator did a great job performing this story and made you believe you were actually inside the story as was caused by amazing writing. Nothing makes me happier than to be able to crawl inside a book as I did this one. I look forward to the other 3 books in this series. Take a chance on this book and you won't regret it.

I gave this book a four-star rating because of its predictability, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it thoroughly. McAneny has written a suspenseful mystery with intriguing characters and makes the swamp of Beulah, South Carolina come alive in your mind. This has been a great book to help make the evenings a bit less stressful during finals week in college; a nighttime ritual I've looked forward to since page one.

What a ride!

This book!!! Where do I begin? It grabbed me from page 1. The characters were fabulously written. The attention to detail, brilliant! A totally unexpected ending. I couldn't put this down. I had tears at the end because I felt the loss of innocence the main 2 characters must have been looking back on yet, finally free to move on with their lives. I loved this book!
