A prelude story leading into the DARK VICTORY main title! Batman recounts the capture of the Holiday killer, now safely behind bars. But even with Holiday over, new villains begin emerging in Gotham City ready to make a name for themselves.

What a fantastic interlude! I am experiencing dark victory for the first time with the rest of the DC comics official discord as they do watch parties for the DC high volume series adapting this work with stellar voice, sound effects, and music work to bring it alive. I swear this is not an ad, but it might as well be as I full endorse it and is an amazing way to enjoy this series. Of course I keep Sale’s art up off to the side to follow along, because how could I possibly not experience that too? But I had no idea going in that this interlude existed, and I am so glad it does as it hits on the perfect beats for setting up this story. Speaking of “beats,” this starts with the end of long Halloween as batman finds out holiday is Alberto Falcone and he proceeds to beat the crap out of the little guy before Jim could pull him off. This leads directly into Dark Victory as a bit of a time has passed, the Falcone fortune got Alberto a ticket to Arkham right across from Calender man (who must be seething at the fact he is less notable than Alberto for Holiday related crimes, lol) and the new DA is actually pursing the idea of getting Alberto out of jail?! His arm was intensely damaged after his run in with batman and she sees cause to reopen the case and possibly get him out due to how he was treated. She immediately goes to Jim after visiting Alberto in Arkham and he tells her what she should hear, she is making a mistake and this is a bad idea. But something is driving her here, and with the clear civil rights violations under Jim’s watch she has cause to pursue this. As she leaves batman steps out of the shadows of Jim’s office. He isn’t dripping from the rain outside so you know he was chilling there the entire time, lol. Jim is worried he won’t be able to protect batman this time, but batman assures him that he won’t and never will have to do that. Jim laments that he misses Harvey, and batman cuts him off. Jim naturally goes off, they were all friends and batman can’t be this cold hearted…but batman is already gone. The ending monologue from batman is the perfect tease for what is to come, as he speaks of a quote from his father that talks about becoming stronger if you stand on your own. Batman is about to find out the hard way that standing on your own is not the easier path forward.

Day 207: Quick catch up on what has come before (The Long Halloween) and set up for the next installment. Yes, I’m procrastinating on getting back to the regular Bat title.
