Whether she's soaking her living room in Raid bug spray, fantasizing about living in a $50,000 sleep capsule, or dragging her brood of rowdy children out of Whole Foods, Jennifer Fulwiler's life is sure to be a source of inspiration (or at least entertainment) in this collection of essays originally published on her blog. With a new introduction and conclusion, as well as a foreword by author Simcha Fisher, Like Living Among Scorpions is a fresh look at the most popular humorous posts that chronicle Jen's attempts to keep her sanity while managing a house full of babies and scorpions. Longtime readers will love reliving these moments with Jen, and new readers will enjoy this introduction to her unique perspective on life.
Jennifer Fulwiler is a mom of six, a standup comic, and the host of a daily talk show on SiriusXM. She’s a bestselling author whose new book is Your Blue Flame: Drop the Guilt and Do What Makes You Come Alive. After being told that there wasn’t an audience for standup comedy done by a minivan-driving woman from the suburbs, she self-produced her own tour, which is selling out venues across the country. I am already a big Jennifer Fulwiler fan so I expected to enjoy this - and I did! If you're an exhausted, maxed out, yet happier every day mom, then this book is for you!
A lighthearted read. It was a short enjoyable read. Jennifer can be quite funny explaining situations in her life. I could see myself thinking the same thoughts and realizing the absurdity of life sometimes. It was a great book to read by the pool and to take me away from the ridiculous repetitive media overload of politics and hatred and back to our simple day to day hilarious struggles which we at least have some control over.
Apparently, this is my day for finishing books I've started a long time ago, and the day for reading Jen Fulwiler!
Thank you, Jen, for taking Texas completely off the list of possible states to live. No thank you to living with scorpions. I suppose I'll have to appreciate my black-ice laden Michigan winters just a little longer.
It's all fun and games and delightful internet stories until someone's stung in the face in bed in the middle of the night. NOPE.
Summary of review: this book is about scorpions and how you don't want to ever move to Texas. Because scorpions. ;D
I read this because I could borrow it for free from Amazon (because otherwise I might as well go read blog archives...but then that would have taken me longer and would have led down more rabbit trails, so considering the $2.99 price you may just want to buy it).
But all I have to say is "Jennifer Fulwiler you didn't tell us almost ALL of the stories in this book had to do with scorpions! I thought it was just like one or two to lend it a funny title!" The only good that comes out of reading about the scorpions is the feeling that I may not be the craziest person on the planet when I'm fleeing wasps. Also, I have more firmly resolved never to move to Texas. At least not as a single woman.
Jen Fulwiler is hysterically funny and I highly recommend this romp through her chaotic, wonderful life. Jen has a self deprecating sense of humor and I literally laugh out loud and read parts to people as I'm dissolving in fits of laughter. I can so relate to her temperament, her predicaments and her desire to bring order to her life, though the circumstances will just not allow that. Her writing style makes you feel like you're sitting across from her attempting to have a nice glass of wine together. Besties. Very conversational.
We could all use a little escape because it is 2020 after all. Worst. Year. Ever! Do yourself a favor and forget about masks, politics, shutdowns and social distancing and plop yourself right in the midst of Jen's messy, perfectly imperfect life. You won't be sorry!
Often, when bloggers put out ebooks consisting of content available for free on their website, which I've probably already read, it seems...like a test, maybe. Are you dumb enough to pay for this? I have a bridge for sale, too! At first, I didn't buy this on principle. Then I realized *I* was never going to dig through the archives to find posts that would be fun to read again (or for the first time). That almost sounds like something I would pay for! $2.99, maybe?
It was totally worth it. I remembered many of the posts, but they were fun to read again, and I enjoyed the new-to-me ones from before I read Jen's blog. It was put together nicely and felt like a cohesive book, not a cut-and-paste job. I'd definitely recommend it, especially to someone who hasn't read her blog before.
I very much enjoy Jennifer Fulwiler's work; if possible I would probably rate this a 3.5 stars instead. As a reader of her blog, there wasn't a lot new in this book. I was expecting that this would be the case though, as it often is with essay collections from bloggers, so I wasn't too disappointed. It was also a little short, I easily read it in a couple of hours, but since I got it from Kindle Unlimited I didn't feel like I had overspent or anything. All that said, I enjoyed the essays, and laughed at many of the stories, even though I'd read them before. Definitely worth taking a look at if you're not familiar with her blog, or if you're a newer reader that won't have seen some of the early essays.
This collection of short stories -- really a best-of series of blog posts -- was a joy to read. I kept finding myself interrupting my wife to read a section out loud. It was a quick read overall, and each story was quick in itself -- great for when you have just a minute or two for a quick, funny pick-my-up.
A few reviewers on Amazon complained about the repetition. Is there some repetition? Sure, the themes repeat, particularly the scorpions. That doesn't mean they aren't funny, and it doesn't mean they're all the same. By not reading to the end, those reviewers missed out on some of my favorite parts.
I really did laugh out loud while reading this book . And if I wasn't before I am now afraid of scorpions; however, I continued to laugh at the entire book . I decided to read this book because I found out that Jennifer Fulwiler is going to be a guest speaker in Atlanta and so I wanted to learn something about her . Now I know she's going to be one person I listen to at the convention I'm attending . Jennifer's book was entertaining , humorous , so much more , but what I really enjoyed with her openness to her family life .
Scorpions in one's life may be real or metaphorical. unfortunately for Jen Fulwiler, it's both.
This is a compilation of hilarious essays she's written on her blog over the years. What I really loved about this is that Jen does not take motherhood as well as society wants. Her views are mine...and, I'm sorry, but she makes me even more glad I don't have any kids. Since I only started hearing and reading her work in the past year, this was a great set for me to get my hands on.
I started reading this while waiting for my mom to get out of surgery. This book was so funny and refreshing, it helped me take my mind off everything else. I love how real Jennifer Fulwiler is, even about her flaws. Great read for anyone feeling overwhelmed with life in general. Made me laugh out loud SO many times!
This was a blast to read. Ms Fulwiler has a unique way of connecting everyday life and spiritual well-being. Who would have thought that scorpions serve a useful purpose
I'm giving this book 5 stars because it made me laugh like a crazy person and it's cheap. I read it while I was laying down and nursing my young'un. I realized I was looking forward to the next time I could read it for a few minutes.
Jennifer Fulwiler feels like someone I should be best friends with. Her hilarious and touching essays made me feel like there was someone else who gets it. This is a perfect quick read for the busy, burnt out, maybe slightly overwhelmed Catholic mama.
