Starting in this volume, the focus shifts from being a screwball magical comedy to being light romance with magical elements. The change really worked, mostly because I liked the characters so much. It's a fun bit of fluff.

Review for the complete series

Ayu is regarded as the cool girl at school - an image she'd like to maintain. But once she meets the bumbling exchange student Nina, she seems to stumble from one embarrassing incident to the next. Not only is Nina clumsy, but she also turns out to be a witch! One missed spell leads to another and soon Ayu's school life is in chaos.

Ultra Maniac is the only fantasy story this author has written so far. And it's a shame too! This author likes adding some crazy things to her stories which I always find hard to swallow. Adding magic to the story is a simple but clean way to deal with that issue - this was one of her few works where I did not feel as though I had to ignore my disbelief.

Ayu and Nina are both great characters. Nina was particularly cute and the way she always wants to help people is very loveable. I loved how their friendship developed. Ayu was quite stand-offish in the beginning and one can see how she grows to really care about Nina throughout the story - even to the point of giving up something that is dear to her for the sake of her friend.

While the author did a great job with portraying their friendship, I found the romance less convincing. I actually liked that romance took a backseat and that the main focus was on the friendship and magic. Nonetheless, I wish the romance was handled differently. It starts off quite nice and natural - I like how the characters slowly notice each other rather than falling in love too fast. But while the romance was really slow during the first few volumes, it turned fast very suddenly in the final volume. I could see the romance budding, but then it just took off like a rocket and I found it hard to comprehend.

Seeing as the romance was really not the main point, though, I can't complain too much. The magic system was never explored all that much, I think it would have been nice to know a little more about the Magic Kingdom. The comedy is much in the style of Yoshizumi and very enjoyable - the art is also adorable and just nice to look at!

It's been almost 12½ years since the second digest of this shojo manga was first published in the U.S., and after reading it three or four times through over the past decade, one of the things that I always appreciated about this story was that the tone was consistent all the way through its five issues (a steady rating averaging in between 3 to 4 stars).

In this volume, two characters were introduced to the main cast. As I haven't been into manga or anime as much anymore as I did growing up, I wasn't sure if the story conflict was quite cutting it for me as it did when I first read this in high school (considering rating this 3 stars— lower than my review rating for vol. 1, which almost contradicts my previous statement of it being consistent in quality), but there were always moments that brought me back to remind me why I enjoyed this manga so much.

There were also references that I never caught before (mainly Ayu's mention of the Marvel comic "Cloak and Dagger"), and reminders why I enjoyed other media later released— namely the American Disney XD 2015 cartoon, "Star Vs. the Forces of Evil", which is very evidently influenced by the magical girl theme. Both stories deal with a teenage school dropout from another planet, living on Earth as a foreign exchange student while she learns to master her magical powers. Fans of "Star" looking for a comic to read in between episode air dates should definitely check out this manga.

This volume gets away from the comedy and the hijinks and even has a little less magic in it, but the characters are really likable. So it still works without as much of what made the first volume really fun. I was also glad [spoilers] to see Ayu and Tetsushi get together without it needing to be drawn out for a terribly long time. I will confess I swooned a little when it happened :). It made me wonder what was going to be the driving force behind the plot from that point forward, but as I discovered through successive volumes, it turned out okay.

Eek Ayu and Nina are back in another volume and I am loving it! This time we've got familiars, transfer students from the witch kingdom, and magical technology wrecking havoc! What more could I ask for? I've read quite a few mangas this year and this is hands down my favorite. Quick recap: popular girl, Ayu and new girl, Nina quickly become friends after Nina reveals her big secret - she's a witch! More hilarity ensues and I did give this volume four out of five stars because it felt like we finally got into more of the drama associated with Shojo mangas. Can't wait to get my hands on the next volume!

This was full of surprises! There are love triangles, but they get resolved (mostly) in this volume, which is a first. I really like the cat-boy. He's super cute! I feel like this could be a great ending to the series, just by the way the author wrapped up the story in this volume. The last volume had a similar feeling.

Super cute!

I've always loved how close Ayu and Nina are. I mean with Ayu trying to get rid of her in the first book, it's such a cute contrast to their friendship in this one,

I liked this one a lot! In this volume we got a new character. This new characters name is Yuta, a friend of Ninas from witch school. He is also having to study abroad now. He is upfront and jerk but there is more to him than that. He has a secret as well. I like the romance in this volume. I like the characters and their building a bit more in this volume as well.

CUTE AND DUMB. Volume 2 is more plot-heavy and drops the magic thing almost entirely, but I loved it even more. Ultra Maniac's story moves so much quicker than in similar series, which is pretty great for a change.

Such a cute little series!

That ending though??? Come on! Tetsushi has to like Nina!!! He’s so comfortable around her. He shows his “real” self only to her!!! I bet he won’t do that for Ayu! Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Je mets une note globale pour les 5 tomes.
C'est très sympa à lire. Je me suis bien attachée à Nina.
Je les avais adorés étant plus jeune.

Ultra Maniac sits on the border between children's manga and YA - packed with humor, the romance aspect is light and fun and often takes a backseat to the warm friendship between Ayu and Nina, an aspiring witch. The art is gorgeous and fits well with the lighthearted, cutesy plot.

Volume two introduces Yuta and Leo, Nina's pet, and also expands on the Tetsushi/cookie issue that Nina accidentally walked in on at the end of the first volume. Tetsushi admits to feeling pressured to be nice and uphold his reputation, an issue that plots rarely address in male characters: both girls and boys struggle with how others perceive them. Score for touching on something deep!

Of course, the story still skirts around difficult issues.

I love the artwork so much that I'd probably read this regardless of how good or bad the plot was.

aseli deh, ya, di volume kedua baru kelihatan konfliknya.
tapi beberapa halaman salah cetak sehingga kenikmatan membacanya pun terkurangi.

From what I wrote above, it’s been almost 11 years ago I read this manga series that wasn’t published/translated by m&c. That’s why the translation was terrible. But when I reread them all (m&c’s version) it was cool and fun.
