Clan of Midnight
The Floodgate has passed, the world knows immortals exist, and one of them is the Magician David Zane. Mythical creatures have spread throughout the world, some seeking normalcy and others hiding. Upon returning home to Oro County, California, Zane's short return gets interrupted. A string of murders in Oro County have the police asking for his assistance. As a link between the magical and moral worlds, Zane gets pulled into the center of a growing mystery. When an unseen enemy appears, a game of cat and mouse follows. Zane, who only desired to return to a normal life, finds himself as the only thing between the enemy and the potential victims of Oro County.

A hard-boiled murder mystery with vampires, werewolves, and magicians. This was a different take on what would happen if supernatural beings existed and came out of hiding. Centered around David Zane, a returning magician to California who disappeared into the supernatural sub-world for several decades. Dark, with some comedy, I recommend.

I have a short attention span on a good day, but every time I picked up "Clan of Midnight" I got sucked into the story. I went from the local pouring rain to sunny California in about three words, every single time.
David Zane is a magician with a few secrets and a determined outlook on life. You don't mess with his friends. I loved Hoffman's descriptions of the magic that David can perform. It's not a lot of waving of wands or hands. It just is, called upon when needed. It's how I imagined magic feels like to work with.
"Clan of Midnight" is on my "To Re-Read" list, that's for sure. Finally, a writer that treats magic as an everyday thing and not something out of the ordinary, to be twisted into something unrecognizable. For magic, Richard Phillip Hoffman could give Andre Norton a run for her money. He's the Earth to Andre's Air, I think.

January 16, 2016Mystery, intrigues, and all the paranormals you could want - or not want - creep around in this book. and now, David Zane is forced to come out of hiding and the adventure begins.
The immortal races are revealed, the world has changed, and after twenty-five years of living in secret after a faked death, the immortal magician David Zane returns home to the life he had been forced to leave behind armed only with a United States citizenship, a government issued home and an eagerness to get back to a normal life. His plans are soon complicated, however, when a newspaper reveals his identity and immortal race to the community at large.

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.
This book sort of snuck up on me. The premise of a group of immortals being integrated into normal society seemed a little contrived and I didn't really get into the story for awhile. I had to force myself to keep reading beyond the first chapter. However, I eventually found David Zane (an immortal magician) such an interesting character that I was hooked. This turned out to be a fast, imaginative read loaded with enough action and intrigue that I can recommend this highly to anyone interested in paranormal fantasy fiction.

Great book. I enjoyed the story a lot. I was drawn in. The first indie book in a long time that I felt was down to earth enough and easy to read. A few errors here and there but nothing that can't be brushed off. It's a supernatural thriller about an underworld of vampires, werewolfs and immortals brought into today's society amongst other mortals. Murders start happening and they recruit David Zane, an immortal magician to help the police investigate. . I highly enjoyed this book!
