John Gordon Davis was born and grew up in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He had a degree in Political Science and an LLB. He served on the bar in Southern Rhodesia, before UDI in that country.
He became a full time writer after the success of his first book Hold my hand I'm dying.
He ran a course in fiction writing from Andalusia in Spain. He passed away in November 2014 and is survived by his wife Rosemary.
This is the second in Davis' Hong Kong series. It was not as interesting as the first one, but was still a good read. I enjoy the Hong Kong context and would have liked to see Hong Kong when it was British as a comparison to post handover times. Like the first, this is essentially a love story but it has strong crime sub plots and is set around interesting historical events. Apparently there is a third, so I will look forward to that. I will also pursue his earlier novels set in Africa.
