Joshua Guess (who goes by Josh most of the time, but Joshua professionally because his mom insists) is originally from southern Illinois, but moved to central Kentucky at an early age.
Always a storyteller, his interest in creating began with art. He loved to draw and come up with stories about his pictures.
Then he discovered comic books and novels, and things...took a turn.
Devouring everything from superboy to Stephen King, Josh started to gain a greater interest in writing, making it a hobby during high school and achieving distinguished marks in his portfolio.
Then, life got in the way. College and the struggle to start a life of his own away from home took up most of his time. His love of telling stories took a back seat to the needs of daily life for many years, with the occasional foray into working on one project or another.
In late 2009, Josh buckled down and started work on an idea for a fantasy novel that had been stuck in his head since those halcyon days back in high school. Struggling to find a voice, Josh realized months later after many false starts that he needed to stretch his brain a little, strengthen his writing muscles. So he began another project that had been simmering in the back of his mind, a continuing serialized zombie story, told in the form of a daily blog.
Living With the Dead has given him a measure of success, but more important has imparted new skills at wordsmithing and the drive to complete. 'Bound to Silence', his debut novel, has been released and is available now, as are many collections and versions of Living With the Dead.
Once that tipping point was reached, there was no choice for him but to keep on writing. Much more of Josh's work will be released in the coming months.

I hate writing in the third person about myself. I live an average life and work a full time job. I have three cats, two dogs, two ferrets, and a wife that I'm so in love with it hurts. My goal is to some day have enough success to write full time, and to manage a level of long term financial security that I don't have to worry about money. It's my dream to make a good living doing what I love--telling stories. I hope you enjoy my work. That's why I do it.

The first book of this series was great. Very exciting, interesting, I loved the way the origin of the virus was described. I liked how Kell learned to adapt.

The first half to the second book was pretty good too. However, from this point to the rest of the series the writing took a huge downward turn and become boring, monotonous and tedious. I don’t know why the author thought that every encounter with the enemy or zombie had to be described in minute, gory detail. Yes your spear “hit the soft spot under the zombie’s jaw” and on and on and on.

SPOILERS AHEAD
The UAS versus Union was a ridiculous storyline and I honestly did not care who won at the end.

The worst part though was in the third book, when they are apparently “a few days away” from the war between UAS and Union and they tell Kell he has to leave to go into hiding and he defies their orders and stubbornly refuses to leave because he “wants to fight”. How much of a selfish prick can you be? There’s nothing honorable about this at all. He is the only other person apparently in the world who has any chance of curing the virus and he pulls this macho man BS? And his friends just smile and indulge him “oh that’s just Kell we knew he would do this”. So ridiculous.

I couldn’t wait for this series to be over and was skipping paragraphs just to get to the end because I had invested so much time and I wanted to see if anything happened. Spoiler alert - nothing happened.

If you love zombies, this series is for you. But, its not just about the zombies. Think Walking Dead, you become very attached to the characters in this series and I am pretty sure I read straight through the night on several occasions because I just could not put them down. I am posting the same review for this entire series because I am not going to give any spoilers and I feel this way about the entire series. A must read for anyone who loves the zombie genre, and enjoys a really well written, well though out book, that has characters that evolve along with the stories.

Great Book!

What can I say? First off I was unable to put this book down. I could not wait to get to the next page. I have read Joshua since he put his first book out and can see how he has grown as a writer. There is no redundancy in this book. I know the story of New Haven, which gave me some perspective that I may not of had without it, however it is not needed. This series stands on it's own. The characters in this series are like old friends or rather family, I feel as if I know them even better then my own. Joshua gives great insight to why a character makes the choices they do. Maybe not at the time, but you will understand why. I love how you can see the personal growth of each character. You are really depriving yourself if you do not get to know this author, because his zombie books are really not zombie books, they are there, but there is also so much more to them. People read his book "Beautiful". I want more then anything to hear more of those characters and what he could do with them. I am excited because I know I have 2 more books to read in this series and I can hardly wait. You're lucky I took the time to put this review up, that is how engrossed I am with this series. Joshua great job and keep them coming, your mind is amazing and your books are enriching. I love Stephen King, dare I say I love your writing as much maybe even more! I can't wait to see what you come up with next. I really do hope at sometime you will be able to visit " Beautiful" again. If that happens remember who put a good word in for it!

OMG

This was amazing and so worth it. I got 20 pages into it and was already calling friends and telling them to read it.
I especially liked how a lot of the ideas in the book were practical and things I had thought of myself.
I finished in about a week...but I will be rereading it for sure.

Basic story is great, too many battles

I really enjoyed the story of Kell, but every time the story started to get interesting here comes another long battle, or preparations for one. They were getting predictable and I started skipping them. I would have liked to have read a more character and scuence driven story line and less warfare.

However, the writing was good.

Glad to see zombies are not the main focus

this is much more than another zombie apocalypse. I think the author did an excellent job in creating characters you really care about. I couldn't put it down once I started!

Wow

What a ride! This is a really great story. I really love the main characters. I enjoyed following them through the first years of the apocalypse. So much happens, so much is learned. This is quite an exciting tale.
