A poisoner. A pirate. The marriage they never wanted. And the dangerous quest they must complete.

Elayna Velore hates the idea of a husband. But when her mother tries to force one on her, she marries a pirate instead. One who owes her his life and leaves her alone, just the way she likes it.

Three years later, Elayna is busily curing women of their nasty husbands when one of those jobs lands her on a pirate lord's kill list. Which brings her own husband, Captain Crimson Dyre, back to her doorstep with his smoldering smile... and a deal.

She must board his ship and help him hunt for a treasure that will free them both from the pirate lord.

But neither of them want this marriage-or to share a bed and a strange magical bond that grows stronger with each danger they face.

As they realize there is more to this treasure hunt than they thought, they risk losing their ship, their crew, and each other.

For here on the treacherous waters of Eloren Isles, every debt must be paid.

A marriage of convenience pirate romantasy standalone (no pre-reading, no cliffhanger!) that gives readers a flirty pirate captain, a vigilante poisoner, all the banter, a magical bond with mind speak, a lovely found family crew, a pet sea dragon, and so much more!

The Bone Debt was the perfect slowburn romance with a gut-wrenching plot that kept me engaged until the very end. I liked that the characters developed slowly and in ways that felt believable and that the secondary characters had a lot of depth. I also appreciated that this book is a standalone and that everything resolved without needing a bow.

Read if you like...
✨Mental communication flirting
🌊Magic dragon familiars
✨He calls her "wife" and she takes it as an insult
🌊She poisons abusive husbands
✨"You came." / "You called."
🌊He supports her freedom, even if it's without him
✨Found family that adopts her
🌊Marriage of convenience and force proximity via blackmail
✨Slowburn that never really heats up but you don't really miss it
🌊A sea goddess way too invested in the FMC's love life
✨Men who protect women and women who can definitely hold their own
🌊 He plays the fiddle but in a not weird way
✨Swashbuckling battles on pirate ships

This is a pirate romantasy that follows a girl who wants to get out of the life her mother wants for her, so when she sees a pirate in trouble, to save him, she strikes a deal (bone debt) with him.

The characters were really fun to read about. This one had a really good found family. It’s action-packed and full of romance. It’s a bit on the insta-love side, but there is a reason for it. I loved the little bits of magic our FMC had and how connected she was to the ocean. 🌊🏴‍☠️

If you like more romance than plot, this one is for you. It was a fun read and I really enjoy Leah’s writing. My only complaint is the story felt a tad on the YA side, but I overall had a good time with it.

I received my copy via the NerdFam program, accepted by the author! All opinions are my own!

Pirates may be my next obsession.

This book has all the things I absolutely love. A badass FMC who knows her way around poison, a flirty pirate captain who loves her deeply (YES, there is a "touch her and die" moment!!) and a little magic.

I read this one in just a few days! I was INVESTED in this story (and also pirates are new to me... now I need 100 more pirate romantasy books). I will say 'Romantasy' is more loose in this; there are some fantasy elements, but the world itself is not reallyyy a magical one.

My advice: If you think pirates are hot... read this. Simple. This was an absolute joy of a read.

I ate up every minute of this book! There are so many piratey shenanigans and basically the entire time is spent on a ship.

I loved the growing romance between the FMC and MMC. It starts off with them marrying so he can clear a debt owed and she can have some freedom and then oh no they're forced to work together and sleep in a bed together hehe.

The whole crew was a fun group of found family and I loved the snarky Goddess and magic in here too. Plus a water dragon!!

I will absolutely be going on to read other books by this author!

Read if you love:
-Pirates
-Water dragons
-Meddling Goddess
-FMC who poisons abusive husbands
-Marriage of convenience
-Forced proximity

Thank you to the author for the eARC. My thoughts are entirely my own.

arc provided by the author but all opinions are my own!

a great conclusion to my pirate summer!! this was such a fun romp but be not afraid by the standalone nature! nothing felt rushed. the world felt believable and built out, the plot sailed (sorry), and the romance was so so tender.

my favorite thing was the atmosphere and the romance. i really loved how the world didn’t feel like it was built to house elayna and crimson, but crimson and elayna were built from the world. that, to me, is what sets good romantasy apart from romantasy slop. everything could stand on its own. if they didn’t get together, the story would have been just as satisfying and the characters just as likable!! it was swashbuckling! it wasn’t overly cartoony but not too serious either! it was fun!! it was exciting!! they swung from ropes and had feathers in their hats!! what more could a girl ask for! (one thing that did make me laugh was how many shots they could get off with pistols though without ever mentioning reloading. i was kinda imagining period typical pirates running around with glock 19s)

as i said, the romance was TENDER and BELIEVABLE. it is NOT enemies to lovers and was not marketed as such and for that i am grateful because then id have to go on a long rant about how society has lost the meaning of all that is holy (what constitutes a proper enemies to lovers).

this is a strangers to lovers. it’s not quite instalove, it’s realistic. these two people don’t know each other and react to it NORMALLY. i hate when two characters should just be neutral strangers and then are just really shitty to each other for no reason. it’s not believable. this IS. they’re two strangers who got married for convenience and now have to figure out how to be around each other!! DELICIOUS. i loved watching how they got used to each other and figured each other out. i also liked that they’re ADULTS. like WHOLE PREFRONTAL CORTEX DEVELOPED ADULTS. crimson is like 30 and elayna is 28. and THEY ACT LIKE IT. they aren’t immature, they are hesitant to trust each other because of course they would be given the circumstances, and then they communicate. LIKE ADULTS. honestly so refreshing in a genre that likes to make everyone act like they’re playing episode with no diamonds (is that a dated reference now? i have no idea).

honestly i think the story could’ve been told the same way (or even more streamlined thematically) without the magic aspect…….. controversial take. the dragons were fine and i liked talia but the magical bond thing just felt like an unnecessary addition to an already solid romance. AGAIN I DIDNT DISLIKE IT i just felt like at times it made me ask more questions than could reasonably be expected to fit in a standalone. like it didn’t feel necessary to how the characters developed or the plot. i know it has large bearing on the plot during a certain battle but i think the battle could have still been won without certain things happening. or maybe i want it to be expanded on MORE. it’s kind of in a weird middle ground of not enough and could be taken out OR expanded on and made to be necessary to the plot. it felt like a set up for future books more than something specifically relevant to this boon.

kinda minor thing that didn’t detract from my enjoyment is that the pacing was really good up until the last 15%. ifound myself going “STILL?” because i think things could have been concluded in a tighter way but i think i see the groundwork for future interconnected books (i will DEF be reading if true). it didn’t ruin anything but it did just make me ask if it was really necessary. i DID like the ending though so take what i said with a grain of salt.

ultimately a fun read and i would recommend to anyone else on a hunt for good pirate romantasy. thank you for the author for trusting me with an ARC and i’m so excited for it to be published to more people can experience it

Firstly, thank you to the author, Leah Mara, for letting me read the eARC of The Bone Debt. This review is my own opinion, and I have not been paid to post it.

On one unexpected night, Elayna Velore discovers that her mother is planning to marry her off to a man who threatens to “break her.” So, naturally, she does the most reasonable thing possible: marries a pirate she's just met and saved from the noose. A pirate who promises to leave her alone and never force her to be his wife in anything but name.

Three years later, Elayna has become a vigilante, killing abusive husbands on behalf of women who ask for her help. But one particular kill leaves her indebted to the most dangerous pirate lord in the Eloren Isles. To pay off her debt, she must reunite with her husband, secure a treasure, and, ideally, survive the whole ordeal.

I genuinely loved the vibes of this book. Like, I had such a good time reading it.

The pacing was so good, especially for a standalone. Every chapter either moved the plot forward, developed the characters, revealed another mystery, or left me absolutely giddy over the banter between the FMC and MMC. Something always kept me invested, and I never felt like the story dragged its feet.

And THANKFULLY, the ending didn't feel rushed. We didn't spend the entire book waiting for the plot to happen, only for everything to suddenly explode in the last 10%. The story developed consistently throughout, which I really appreciated.

The secrets and reveals were another highlight for me. Some identities and schemes weren't fully unravelled until around the 80% mark, but when they finally came to light, they made so much sense. I had to sit back after a few of them and just think, "Of fucking course that's what happened."

Also, I guessed the spy wrong. :( ...moving on...

My only real qualm was that I wish the author had spent a little more time setting the scene. The focus is very much on the characters, their inner monologues, and their conversations, which I loved, but sometimes I struggled to picture exactly what was happening around them. Considering adventure/quest are such big components of the story, I would have appreciated a little more environmental description to really immerse me in the world.

That said, the worldbuilding and magic system kept me pretty intrigued. Without spoiling anything, I loved the inclusion of the gods in the magic system and how the superstitions felt fitting for a pirate story. It added so much to the atmosphere, and I honestly wish we could explore more of this world.

I know this is a standalone, but I would happily read more books set in the Eloren Isles. Especially after what seemed like a potential opening for a certain character's story at the end. 👀

The romance was another highlight for me. At first, I was a little worried that the attraction felt almost insta-love, but looking back, I genuinely enjoyed how their relationship developed. They had their highs and lows, and their struggles felt believable for the characters and their circumstances. There was a little miscommunication, but thankfully it wasn't dragged out for unnecessary drama. It felt more natural, and they worked through it without everything feeling magically fixed overnight.

And the NOTES THEY LEFT EACH OTHER??? I loved that so much!

Overall, this was a great experience for me. It had the romance, adventure, mysteries, magic, and character dynamics I wanted, with pacing that kept me hooked from beginning to end, but still with some minor room for improvement.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.

The Bone Debt was everything I wanted it to be and more! It is a true pirate romantasy filled with adventure, slow-burn romance, witty banter, a touch of magic, dragons, and plenty of unexpected twists. From beginning to end, this story was an absolute adventure to read.

One of my favorite aspects was the slow-building romance between Elayna and Crimson. Their back-and-forth banter was incredibly entertaining, and I loved seeing their relationship develop throughout the story. It reminded me a little of Poison Daughter, but with a greater emphasis on the emotional development and connection between the romantic leads. Their chemistry was fantastic, and the gradual progression of their feelings made the romance all the more satisfying.

Elayna was such a compelling protagonist, and I especially appreciated her character development. At the beginning of the story, she’s a lady who wants absolutely nothing to do with marriage and longs for a life of independence. As her journey unfolds, however, she begins to discover what that independence truly means to her, all while unexpectedly falling in love with Crimson. I loved that her romantic journey didn’t overshadow her personal growth. Instead, the two complemented each other beautifully.

Another element I particularly enjoyed was Elayna’s knowledge of herbalism. Watching her use her skills to both heal and poison others added such an interesting dimension to her character. It was refreshing to see a heroine whose knowledge and resourcefulness proved just as valuable as physical strength.

And can we talk about the adventure?! The story had the perfect balance of action, romance, and exploration. The different settings, the pirate atmosphere, and the constant sense of discovery made this such an immersive reading experience. There were plenty of twists that kept me guessing, but the story also made room for meaningful relationships and quieter, more heartfelt moments.

Speaking of relationships, I adored Reed! His friendship with Elayna was one of my favorite parts of the book. Their bond brought so much warmth to the story, and I appreciated how their friendship remained meaningful amid all the danger, adventure, and romantic tension.

I also loved the little references to the author’s other series, Rellmira Duology! I’m assuming these stories take place within the same world, and if so, I absolutely love that connection. There’s something so satisfying about discovering those little Easter eggs as a reader. I would highly recommend checking out Keys to the Crown as well!

Overall, The Bone Debt delivered everything I look for in a great romantasy: memorable characters, an engaging romance, exciting adventures, fascinating worldbuilding, and just enough magic to make everything feel wonderfully fantastical. It was such a fun reading experience, and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone looking for a pirate romantasy with heart, humor, and adventure.

I received an ARC of The Bone Debt from The Nerd Fam and the author in exchange for an honest review.

Elayna Velore has no interest in being forced into the marriage her mother has planned for her. Her solution? Marry Captain Crimson Dyre, a pirate who owes her his life. Their marriage gives Elayna her freedom, and for three years, Crimson leaves her completely alone.

That changes when the two are forced to work together on a mission for the pirate Bishop. Their task is to capture a ship belonging to Elayna’s mother, and suddenly this married-but-practically-strangers couple is spending a lot more time together.

I really enjoyed watching Elayna and Crimson’s relationship slowly change as they got to know each other and began falling in love. Their connection also has a magical side—they can communicate through their thoughts, and there’s a mysterious bond involving the sea and sea dragons that added another interesting layer to the story.

Overall, this was a fun pirate romantasy with an arranged marriage, slow-burn romance, adventure, magic, and sea dragons. There were definitely a few cheesy moments, but I still had a really good time reading it.

This pirate romantasy was just what I needed! It has adventure, violence, love in a way I like it a lot, characters I can relate to, and a lot of interesting politics.

It's basically a marriage of convenience-to-lovers lovestory between a lady that hates to be a lady and hates men, and a pirate. It's inspired by pirates of the carribean and I knew that long before I read it in the acknowledgements. It has a very slow burn and he fall first. It’s cute, it's sweet, but it's a pirate so there isn't anything soft about it. And even though I was hoping they would end up together, I wasn't sure if they would until the end. Tension and the possibility of a sad ending is present very strongly the second half of the book.

I absolutely loved the 'pirate' details in the book. Looking for treasure, killing with and without feeling guilty, sailing a ship and more gave me so much joy! I also love how the roles on the ship are clear and how it made me love many of the characters. I absolutely adored the cook!

This book will be a fun ride for everyone who likes Pirates (of the Carribean) and romantasy!

This was my first pirate romance (where have I been?! Stranded on an island?!) And I enjoyed it. There is action, plot, romance, a found family, and mutiny! Everything for a great time. There's even a pet sea dragon!! I repeat, a sea dragon. She's the best.

The Bone Debt follows Crimson and Elayna as they travel the seas in the pursuit of revenge. What started as a marriage of convenience quickly became a marriage of love and affection in which both parties kept saving the other. The bone debt between Crimson and Elayna goes beyond that of a typical debt though, as when Crimson saves Elayna's life in return, the debt isn't completely fulfilled, and they discover their bond goes deeper. Their bond is magical. And this throws another dimension to the story that for so well.

Elayna is also a woman after my own heart. A daughter of the governor, brought up in high society, married to a pirate and working in her grandmother's apothecary, with a side hustle that was born out of revenge and female solidarity.

This is a good standalone that is likely to scratch the pirate itch.

Thank you so much to Leah for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

Could not put this down and proceed to read it in less than 24 hours. I had so much fun with this pirate romantasy! We have a marriage of convenience, a flirty captain who plays the fiddle, all the banter, a treasure quest, sea dragon familiars, magical bonding, a badass FMC, and more! Plus I absolutely adore the crew. This is a standalone and wrapped up nicely! I love the authors writing and can’t wait to discover more from her.

Thank you so much to the author for the early copy!

I’m not even pretending to be unbiased here. Pirates are my weakness, and you add an arranged marriage? I was already on board.

Elayna marrying a pirate to escape the match her mother wanted for her was such a fun setup, and then the treasure hunt, the magic, and the pirate crew made this a really entertaining ride. I had a great time with it. Pirate romantasy is apparently very much my thing!!!

Thank you NerdFam and Leah Mara for the complimentary ARC.

This book was a lot of fun and full of pirate adventures! So much was happening, and there was always something keeping the story moving. I really enjoyed Crimson, he was such a flirt. I loved that Elayna was a morally grey FMC, I really liked that she fought hard for what she believed in.

I did struggle with Elayna and her back and forth on the relationship, it was a little drawn out to me.
This went heavily towards the adventures aspect, I would have loved a little more details on the magic that was tying it all together.

This was a dual POV, close proximity, slow burn, pirate romantasy.

ARC Review

I picked up The Bone Debt because the cover caught my attention and, honestly, I had absolutely no idea how much I was going to love it. Pirate romantasy isn’t something I’ve really explored before, but apparently I’ve been missing out because this had me completely hooked.

Elayna has spent her life trying to escape the expectations placed upon her, particularly those of her mother and the society she was born into. Crimson is a pirate captain who is charming, flirtatious and morally grey in exactly the way you want a pirate to be. Their marriage might begin as an arrangement that benefits them both, but when they are brought back together years later, their relationship becomes one of my favourite parts of the entire book.

I absolutely loved these two together. The banter and flirtation are brilliant, but what really sold their relationship for me was the slow burn. There is enough early on to make you desperately want more, but the book actually makes you wait for it. By the time their relationship develops, I was so invested that every little step forward felt like a reward. Their chemistry is fantastic, but there is also genuine respect between them. Crimson can be protective without taking away Elayna’s autonomy, and their relationship allows both characters to remain completely themselves rather than one becoming smaller to accommodate the other.

And then there are the pirates.

This absolutely captures that sense of adventure I wanted from a pirate story. Treasure hunts, rival crews, ships, morally grey characters and plenty of chaos, but it never feels like it is trying too hard to remind you that these people are pirates. The atmosphere is just there. They steal, fight and do objectively questionable things, yet somehow you still end up completely rooting for them.

I particularly loved Crimson’s crew. There are enough little pieces of their individual stories and personalities to make them feel like actual people without the book becoming overwhelmed by secondary characters. By the end, I wasn’t just attached to the main couple. There were characters throughout the crew whose stories I would happily read if we ever got the chance to explore them further.

The fantasy elements are surprisingly restrained, and I actually think that’s one of the book’s strengths. There is magic, mythology, a goddess, magical bonds and sea dragons, but the story doesn’t disappear beneath pages of lore and exposition. Instead, those elements almost feel like the myths and legends you would expect to exist around sailors and the sea. It gives the world depth while allowing the characters, romance and adventure to remain at the centre of the story.

I also loved the pacing. The book takes its time building its characters, relationships and story before everything starts crashing together towards the end. Once it reaches that point, there is a lot happening, but for me it felt like a proper crescendo rather than a rushed ending. The tension keeps climbing, the action keeps coming, and I flew through it. There were reveals I was ridiculously pleased with myself for predicting and others that completely got me, but everything ultimately felt like it belonged within the story.

Most importantly, it sticks the landing. This is genuinely a standalone. I finished feeling completely satisfied with where the story and characters were left, while simultaneously being slightly devastated that I had to leave them there. I don’t need another book to complete Elayna and Crimson’s story, but would I happily read stories about other members of this crew, other ships or basically anyone else wandering around this world? Absolutely.

I went into The Bone Debt thinking a pirate romance sounded fun. I came out wanting to read more pirate fantasy, searching through Leah Mara’s other books and wondering why on earth I haven’t been reading this genre before.

Adventure, romance, morally grey pirates, slow burn tension, magic, sea dragons and characters I genuinely didn’t want to say goodbye to.

Pirates of the Caribbean inspired (a lil barbie and the 12 dancing princesses plot, if you squint). Pirate x Poisoner/Healer. An ocean Goddess. Feminine rage. Found family. Flirting during battle. Water dragons. Many betrayals. HEA.

I love a good pirate story and a strong FMC, and this book delivered just that. Elayna is from high society, wanting to pursue an education rather than getting married to a man (who would likely abuse her). Despite having no choice to sail with her pirate husband, she drifts from the high society mannerisms that’s been engraved into her as a child, to learning how to let go and be free. Although she was a bit stuck up on her ways, she always made an effort to fit in with the crew and not be a wallflower. She takes initiative and follows through. She eventually becomes a key figure on the ship, being able to bring/make remedies for everyone. I love that she’s a girls girl, a big plus for me. Although she annoyed me at times, she ultimately grew on me, everything she does is for the safety of everyone, even if means sacrificing herself.

Crimson, her husband of 3 years, has always loved her even when they met for less than 2 hours. There’s absolutely NOTHING he wouldn’t do for her. Despite having a dark past and dangerous lifestyle, he tries to bring happiness into Elayna’s life. He helps her find the true meaning of freedom, even if it means being apart from him. Oh, and he also has a sea dragon named Talia.

This book brings out so many feels. Majority of it being rage. Rage to Elayna’s mom, a certain captain, an almost would be husband, pretty much anyone who tries to control Elayna. There’s so much action and violence in this book I just wanted them to catch a break already😭, it was so stressful to read, not knowing who was going to live. Not only that, there’s romance and so much banter/flirting. What I loved about the romance aspect is that they both struggle with it, Crimson with not wanting to drag or scare her away from his secrets and Elayna struggling to ever trust someone with the fear of being controlled, especially by a man. I also loved the found family trope, that’s what I love the most about pirate books, everyone has a different past but they’re all accepted and included, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for each other.

Elayna Velore wants one thing, to escape the expectations of society and her mother to follow her passion by studying at The Teacher’s Academy. However, her mother has other ideas by forcing her into a marriage she has never wanted, with a man she despises. Elayna takes the only choice available, to marry a charming pirate she has just met, one who is willingly to leave her alone and allow her to live as she wants. However, three years later her husband returns with a deal and a treasure hunt, one that will give them both the freedom they crave.

A book with a charming flirtatious pirate on a treasure quest is absolutely for me (I’m blaming Pirates of Caribbean) and I really enjoyed this one! So much in fact, that I may have read it in 48 hours and lost some sleep as I couldn’t put it down. It has everything you could want from a romantasy standalone; plenty of adventure, some romance, intriguing characters and a satisfying conclusion.

I loved Elayna, who was deterring to live the life she wants on her own terms, every though her mother and society have their own ideas/ expectations. She is intelligent and determined, using her knowledge to help other women when she can. Then there is the charming Captain Crimson Dyre, I absolutely loved the relationship between them. The chemistry and banter was perfect, while they learnt to trust one another and explore the bond between them. I loved that while Crimson was protective of her, her never smothered or forced choices upon her. He only ever encourages her, helping her to be more confident in herself and abilities, but at times force her to consider the consequences of her actions.

I’m also a tiny bit in love with Reed and the relationship he forms with Elayna. The found family aspect of this book was great, with characters who really come to care for Elayna for who she is and accept her as one of them.

What to expect:
- Marriage of convenience
- Found family
- Pirate x poisoner
- Magical bond
- Treasure quest
- Pet sea dragon
- Standalone

“You’re tired of trying to be someone you’re not. Just be yourself, Elayna. Be honest and good through your eyes, not someone else’s.”

“I fell completely in that moment. Between one breath and the next, between the stars and the sea, I lost my heart to my wife.”

“I’ve never thought of what I’d want in a wife. But being a damn fine kisser with more bravery than most pirates would certainly be on my list.”

I received this ARC after applying. Thank you to the author for allowing me a chance to read your work.

This review is based on my own opinion.

First this novel was such a fun read. I love characters with healthy and fun banter and this book has ALL OF IT. The character development was solid and it was refreshing to see a male lead have so much confidence in the female lead’s abilities, especially in this kind of fantasy setting. The communication between the characters is actually pretty good with little miscommunication (WHICH WE LOVE). It was fun to watch two married adults date and learn about each other. It wasn’t a typical marriage of convenience where they straight up hate being around the other. They understand they need to work together and learn about the other in order to survive and do what they need to do. The romance isn’t rushed, it’s paced well even with the forced proximity. They take the time to genuinely get to know each other, even if it’s through flirty banter which was honestly the best kind of flirty banter I have read IN YEARS.

I’ve never read a pirate Romantasy and this was amazing. The book does have some elements of magic but it’s not the focal point of the book. The world building is also good however, I would have loved to see more about the lore of the Goddess and the ocean, and how our leads are tied to it. It was briefly mentioned but I think it could have delved in just a bit more. Although I do understand that element was not the main theme it would have been fun to read more about the lore.

Overall amazing and fun! I highly recommended this adventure for everyone who loves banter, pirates, and heroines who know their botany (IYKYK).

I was gifted an ebook ARC copy by the author, but my opinions are my own.

This was a fun, fast-paced pirate romantasy adventure! The MMC Capt. Crimson Dyre is very Jack Sparrow coded in his flirty, swaggering demeanor, where the FMC Elayna Velore is a nerdy, academic, kind of strait-laced, at least to start. They agree to a marriage of convenience to help them both out of sticky situations. He sails off, she resumes her life in her family's apothecary shop, but when Crimson shows back up three years later, they need to clear a debt to the ruthless Capt. Bishop and they find themselves sharing the captain's cabin with one bed. Crimson has a fantastic crew/found family that help them on this adventure to clear the debt, although they seem to have spy in their midst, who could it be? Of course, it's not smooth sailing, but a pet sea dragon and a sea goddess offer some assistance along with Capt. Dyre's ragtag crew. I like that it's a pretty straightforward plot/story, which made it an easy read, and I could just enjoy the fun vibe without have to keep track of a lot of elements. It does have a bit of spice (1.5ish peppers), but it's a slow build to it with flirting and tension. While Crimson is the flirty, swaggering pirate captain throughout, we also see his heart of gold that he's got it bad for Elayna. On the flip side, I really enjoyed Elayna's evolution. While she's strong willed from the get go, so slowly steps into her power as she learns to give herself permission to do so over the course of the story. Another big plus for me was the MMC is 30 and the FMC is 28. I definitely recommend this if you love a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe, that's fast-paced fun adventure with romance.

The Bone Debt was such a fun, romantic, and action-packed pirate fantasy! It gave me everything I wanted from the premise: dangerous voyages, sea dragons, storm magic, found family, a morally gray poisoner heroine, and a charming pirate captain who falls completely and wholeheartedly for his wife.

Elayna and Crimson’s relationship was easily my favorite part. Their banter and chemistry were fantastic, but I especially loved how Crimson admired Elayna’s intelligence, ambition, and darkness without ever asking her to make herself smaller. The magical bond between them added so much yearning, vulnerability, and delicious forced intimacy, and the romantic and spicy payoff was absolutely worth the wait.

Elayna was a fascinating heroine because her morally gray choices had real consequences. She wasn’t simply called dangerous; she genuinely crossed lines, and I appreciated that the story allowed her decisions to be challenged. Crimson remained protective and devoted while still respecting her ability to save herself.

The story was a little longer than necessary, and a few conflicts and internal debates became repetitive. The final portion also packed in so many twists, betrayals, rescues, and villain escapes that the pacing occasionally felt overextended. However, the adventure, romance, and deeply satisfying ending made it easy to forgive those issues.

This felt like a spicy romantasy love letter to pirate adventures, complete with a swoony hero, a fierce heroine, an entertaining crew, and a romance that remained central from beginning to end. A thoroughly enjoyable 4.5-star read!

Thank you to Leah Mara, Book Funnel, and The Nerd Fam for the e-ARC read!

The Bone Debt had me feeling like I was in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It had such a great story full of action, adventure, humor, and a little romance. The FMC, Elayna, learns to embrace love both for herself and others. You get to follow along on her journey of self-discovery as she goes from a caged lady of society to a free pirate queen. The banter between her and the MMC, Crimson, throughout the entire book was fantastic. The romance was a perfect strangers to lovers narrative. Elayna and Crimson got to know each other and fall in love over the course of the book while you get to know them. The romance wasn’t rushed or forced and felt believable and perfectly timed within the rest of the plot without overpowering the main storyline. The story was full of great twists that kept me wanting to read more. The side characters of Crimson’s crew were fantastic and I loved that we got to know them throughout the story, too, as they became Elayna’s found family.

Minor critique really, but the pacing felt a little off or maybe overextended toward the end where it was just one thing after another of twists, betrayals, escapes, hunting, etc. But given this was a standalone, in order to tie everything up in a pretty little bow, it was all needed and the ending was completely satisfying. So as I said, minor critique really.

Overall, super fun, totally immersive read full of great adventures, a great cast of characters, and a perfect pirate romance. A great standalone read! Highly recommend as your next read!

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ✨ This first sentence grabbed me. I'm not a pirate romantasy girl and oftentimes books described like this don't get me excited but this is so much more.

The main character is struggling to carve out an identity in a world, with a mother, that is objectifying women. Being one is a means to end, all for someone else, not for her. Her refusal to accept a subservient and inconsequential role as a tool and object to be used and abused however, and her strength and determination are admirable. She's working to help other women get out of this quicksand, by any means necessary. She's fiercely independent with walls around her heart and bone chilling resolve and compassion for others. That's until she is confronted with a man who has an ability to give without wanting anything from her. She's confronted with her own preconceptions about life, due to years pf difficulty and lack of support or care. She's openly questioning what she was once sure of, stumbling to find what is actually true, what she wants herself, and if she's willing to accept anything and anyone into her heart. It's magical, heartwarming but also jarring when we look at the internal struggles. If you've been constantly betrayed, how can you trust. If you've been forsaken, how can you be worthy. It's a beautiful story. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Did I mention the sea dragon?? 🐲🌊 💙

Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted book.

Elayna is the daughter of a privileged family. Her mother is conniving, manipulative, and controlling. When she tries to force Elayna into marriage to a despicable man, Elayna flees and instead marries pirate Crimson Dyre. He'll leave her alone to live her life just as she wants it. She now works in her family's apothecary and dabbles in eliminating abusive husbands. But when Crimson returns 3 years later with a bounty to eliminate her, they are forced to work together on a treasure hunt with deadly consequences should they fail.

Elayna is such a strong FMC, to go through everything she has had to endure, her ailing father, a horrid mother, losing her best friend, she'll do whatever it takes to be free. When Crimson returns, her world is turned upside down. She wants nothing to do with marriage, but is forced to play the part and act like she's in love with her husband. And Crimson is a very likable MMC. He is a pirate, but he cares for his crew, cares for Elayna even when she doesn't want him to, and has a bond with a sea dragon! The chemistry between Elayna and Crimson is so good. They go from bantering with one another to mind-flirting with each other, and I love it! There are plenty of side characters to love, too.

I highly recommend reading The Bone Debt!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you Leah Mara and Nerd Fam for the advance copy.

And here’s how we’re starting this one… 👀

A woman is being forced to marry a man she absolutely DESPISES, but after saving a pirate from being hanged, he now owes her a life debt.

So naturally… what better way to use that life debt than by making the pirate marry her instead?! 🤣🏴‍☠️

These two are then forced to work together on a mission to take over another ship. Am I reading a romantasy, or did I accidentally turn on Pirates of the Caribbean? 😂

They both have a rough history and have to learn to trust each other while dealing with a spy hiding somewhere on the ship. I LOVED trying to figure out who it was. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I questioned everything again! 👀

This book had me staying up way too late because I just HAD to keep reading. There were moments that literally left me with my jaw hanging open. And there are TWO major twists at the end—one I saw coming from the beginning and one I absolutely did NOT. 😳

And the best part? IT’S A STANDALONE! 🙌🏼 No cliffhanger, no waiting forever for the next book. Just one complete, amazing story.

Pirates, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers tension, secrets, twists, and romance… this one completely hooked me. ❤️‍🔥🏴‍☠️

READ. THIS. NOW! TOP TIER PIRATE ROMANCE! If your heart is searching for the perfect swoon worthy, Pirates Of The Caribbean inspired story, this. is. IT! I absolutely fell in love with this story and writing style from the very first sentence. The plot could not have been written better! There were definitely parts I saw coming, but some of the plot twist really got me. Looking back, there were clues, but the plot work was so good at disguising what was really happen *chef's kiss* The spice was well earned and nothing crazy for those who do not normally read anything with spice. The timing throughout the book was well paced and any time jumps were well outlined and obvious to keep up with. The action never stopped in this one and I couldn't be more grateful for being able to read this as an arc ❤️

⭐️ HOT TAKE: This is an absolute must read for anyone who grew up watching Pirates Of The Caribbean and wished so badly to be Elizabeth 🖤 Elyana got on my nerves a bit with refusing to admit her feelings, but honestly, who could be that mad with her character when that was all she was ever taught to do. Push away real connections and let herself be a tool for high society. Trust me, she will grow on you. EVERYONE will love Crimson though 🥵🫣

I really enjoyed The Bone Debt and honestly, I was NOT expecting the story to go the way it did. Which, as a reader, I absolutely love.

The easiest way I can describe the vibes is The Poison Daughter meets Bloody Black, and honestly, that is a combination I didn’t know I needed until now.

This is a pirate romantasy with storm magic, sea dragons, found family, romance and a morally grey FMC who I was immediately invested in. Add in a charming pirate captain and you’ve basically got me.

I loved the twists and turns, and the characters kept me hooked. I was constantly trying to work out where the story was going next, and there were definitely a few moments where I thought I had it figured out... only to be proven wrong. I loved the dynamic between the FMC and MMC, especially the protective MMC energy because apparently I am incapable of resisting that trope.

Overall, it was romantic with some spice, action packed, a little dangerous and just a genuinely fun read. The whole world felt really immersive, and I loved how different it felt from a lot of the fantasy I’ve read recently.

Pirates✅
Romantasy✅
Standalone✅ (though I wouldn’t mind reading more of this universe)

This book is an absolutely beautiful standalone fantasy, and it has easily become one of my favorite reads of this year! From the very first page to the conclusion, Leah Mara delivered! I literally could not put it down. There is such a Perfection to Elayna and Crimson: The chemistry between these two is absolutely chefs kiss! Elayna is the stabby, "black cat" heroine, and Crimson is the charming, "golden retriever" pirate captain who worships the ground she walks on and she didn’t even know it. Their banter is top-tier! The forced telepathic mind-bond added a layer of emotional intimacy and tension that had me screaming into my pillow. That bond elevated this book from pirate heist to an unforgettable emotional journey.
As their minds and souls intertwine, their explosive banter shifts into a devastatingly beautiful mutual pining. The transition from an alliance of necessity to a deep, unyielding partnership is sublimely earned. So read this book if you want a high-seas adventure with a romance that will leave your heart completely in a knot.

10000000000000% recommend ♥️

I was given the opportunity to receive this ARC. I was so happy when I received the email.

I surprised how quickly I got into this book. I've read some books with pirates and all but I couldn't get into them. I don't know if it's because it was the wrong time and I wasn't feeling it or whatever. But I'm soo happy I read this standalone!!!

Elayna, rich girl who craves a life of freedom and wants to go to school for apothecary. To never be married nor tied down to a man to please society. That is until she meets a red headed pirate, Crimson, and makes a desperate decision.

Elayna and Crimson... The back and forth. He was set on her immediately but Elayna's back and forth was driving me a bit insane 😂 Oh how he yearns for her and patiently waits for her. "My love" ❤️ The things that he says to her got me giggling and kicking my feet. I won't say too much before I accidentally spoil it, but I love this book!!!

I highly recommend this book if you like Pirates of The Caribbean, action, yearning and romance!

✨I’ll be coming back to write my official review…but just know just novel was freaking amazing!!!! Top 10 all year and I’d love to see it as a movie!!🍿
P.S. Thank you NerdFam and the author for the eArc…omg I wanna read it again🔥

I’m back!! I wrote it on paper 📝 first, so it took me a minute to type it out as well 🙃.

First and foremost, imagine Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean... wave a dang fan in my face cuz that's who I'd picture as my pirate in here. Just with red hair LOL. An Irish Orlando. Boy oh boy!
For me a 5 star novel has to hook me from the beginning and keep me snared throughout. MAN! This one sure as heck did that! The ship's name will probably live rent free in my head — I absolutely love it. The banter between the MMC & FMC was great — this FMC is a complete badass, let me tell you! I think she drank a Red Bull and grew her own wings. And oh — the sea dragon — so adorable! I want one.
I kept thinking this novel would make one fan-freaking-tastic movie. Like seriously. All the side characters are incredible, too. I definitely want this shelf trophy!

ARC review- I really enjoyed this read! I was a little skeptical at first, it was giving very pirates of the Caribbean vibe (not a bad thing, just similar) Society woman, pirate man etc. But this was a great standalone! There was a lot packed into the story, I do wish the author had elaborated on a few things but it didn’t take away from the story, just curiosity on my part. The twists and turns were fun. Thank you for the advanced copy!!

“A marriage of convenience pirate romantasy standalone (no pre-reading, no cliffhanger!) that gives readers a flirty pirate captain, a vigilante poisoner, all the banter, a magical bond with mind speak, a lovely found family crew, a pet sea dragon, and so much more!”

Tropes: marriage of convenience, black cat/golden retriever, he falls first, magical bond, sea dragon pet, found family, mind speak, treasure quest, hurt/comfort, vigilante FMC
