This Charming Man

Rate this book
Dexter meets You. A psychological thriller about the price of doing what’s necessary, and the man who’s been paying it longer than he can remember.

John Sullivan is on his third name.

It has cost him a family, a city, and most of whatever he used to be. He’d tell you it was worth it. There are children alive who are safer for it, and none of them will ever know his name.

Watching people is the whole of what he is. He sees what everyone else finds a reason not to see, and then he does what nobody else will.

Somebody is doing it to him now.

He can’t prove it. That’s what starts tearing him apart. A car that’s always there and never hides. The feeling of being read by someone better at it than he is.

For the first time, John is the one being studied.

And everything he trusts about his own judgment is beginning to give.

Watching John asks whether it’s ever right to do wrong. This Charming Man asks what it costs, because nothing you take from a person comes free.

Everybody pays.

Even when they had it coming.

Even when you were right.

If you love short, dark, addictive thriller books under 300 pages, with a morally gray and UNHINGED protagonist, This Charming Man and the prequel, Watching John, are perfect.

You’ll love these books if you:

📌 Root for serial killers as long as they have good intentions

📌 Are sick of hearing about men abusing their power

📌 Think there’s nothing better than revenge

📌 Want books you can binge-read

📌 Enjoyed ‘Dexter’ and ‘YOU’

I love these types of stories where a character starts committing crimes for a good cause, but halfway through, we realize they may have gone too far to turn back.

This series does that so well, especially in the sequel. We see a man who is taking out predators, but is he truly in control? Can he stop and live a normal life? Or is he drawn to violence in a way that's becoming dangerous?

If you want a bingeworthy series that makes you think, this is it.

BLURB:
John Sullivan’s new life in Austin is threatened when someone begins tracking him, just as his hunt for predators exposes a dangerous web of abuse & corruption.

REVIEW:
This is the second book in the Watching John series. I recently reviewed and loved book one, and because it ended on a cliffhanger, I needed to read this one immediately. And it did NOT disappoint! Just like the first book, this is a fast-paced, really unique psychological thriller featuring a vigilante killer, thought-provoking themes, and an unpredictable storyline. Both books follow the same complex, morally grey character, John, who’s now changed his identity (again) and relocated to Austin, Texas, hoping to stay under the radar. I listened to the audiobook versions of both books, which elevated the experience further, as Andrew Morrison does a fantastic job bringing John, his compelling inner monologues, and all of the suspense to life!

Like book one, the story is told through John’s first-person POV, but we also get interspersed chapters from FBI agent Deborah Torres later on. I really enjoyed her chapters, as they give us another perspective on the vigilante killings and add layers to the story. The story has a compelling opening, with John updating us on how his life has changed since fleeing Miami months earlier. His early inner monologues show how he’s still struggling with his impulses to continue his vigilante work, foreshadowing some of what’s to come. The story really gets going when he receives a text message from an unknown source with a photo of his old car on the night he fled Miami, indicating that someone’s been tracking him and found him. I was immediately intrigued by where the story would be headed with the tables being turned on John. Even when he knows he could be in danger, he continues his daily routine and his vigilante work as though nothing has changed.

Early in the story, John meets teenager Mia, who asks him to help fix her computer. Their unconventional friendship develops quickly, and he soon meets her mother, Alba, and becomes more involved in their lives. Thisbecomes a compelling and emotional thread in the story. Without giving anything more away, this book essentially has two major storylines unfolding: John watching potential predators, digging through online activity, and taking action, while a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase unfolds as someone watches him.
Agent Deborah Torres’s POV is really entertaining. She’s trying to do her job while wrestling with her ownunderstanding of justice, and as certain things come to light, it’s clear how much the investigation affects her. She’s definitely one of my favorite characters in the series, even though she has some flaws that become more apparent towards the end.

And like in the first book, John makes some very risky decisions, and there were scenes when I was yelling at him to STOP, change his mind, or take another route! He’s convinced himself that he’s the one who needs to step in, as the judicial system has failed the people who need it most, and it definitely makes him a fascinating character. It brings up many thought-provoking, book-club-worthy questions about justice, revenge, morality, and accountability.

The chapters are short, punchy, and full of immersive dialogue, tense confrontations, and action scenes as John tries to stay one step ahead of whoever is tracking him. And because the first book ended on a cliffhanger, there was an unfinished thread that I hoped would get further development, and I was not disappointed! The final chapters have some shocking twists, and a few of the characters’ decisions made me angry because I didn’t agree with how they handled things. At the same time, considering the world we live in, they also felt painfully realistic. The final scene is gripping and leaves the story open-ended, and it left me wishing there were another installment because I want to know what happens next. Although this book is marketed as the final book in the Watching John series, I would happily read another book if Christina Patterson ever decided to revisit this world!

The author’s note at the end is definitely worth reading, as it emphasizes the central question of the book: what does it cost to be the person who simply cannot look away? John crosses lines most of us would hope we’d never cross, but he does so because he believes (with his entire being) that his actions are necessary. I thought this was an interesting and thought-provoking way to end the book.

If you enjoy fast-paced psychological thrillers, morally grey protagonists, vigilante serial killer stories, police procedurals, and shocking twists, I recommend this series. And if you’re an audiobook listener, I recommend binge-listening to both books back to back! Andrew Morrison does a great job bringing John and the other characters to life, with excellent pacing and intensity. If you already enjoyed Watching John, don’t hesitate to pick this one up. I’m so glad I didn’t wait to read it!

No good deed goes unpunished.

Can a man truly escape his past, or will his need to protect others always pull him back in?

Following the cliffhanger in the first book, This Charming Man is the second instalment in The Watching John duology and we’re back with the same man living a dangerous double life as a vigilante targeting those who abuse children. This time, he’s living under his third identity: John Sullivan.

Trying to leave his past behind, John walks away with nothing but his cat, Jade, the one witness to the life he’s promised himself to leave behind. But when he befriends a single mother and her daughter, he starts questioning whether he can truly change… and if he walks away, who will protect the children?

I really enjoyed seeing another side of John in this instalment! His hesitation to let people in felt genuine, especially when you can see that deep down, so much of it comes from his desire to protect others. Or at least that is what he tells himself.

The banter and one-liners between the main characters were a highlight for me. I loved the way John slowly began allowing people into his life, showing more emotion and revealing his desire to belong to something bigger than himself, a family.

Seeing him wrestle with the possibility of a different life made his character even more compelling. Beneath all the danger and guarded walls, there’s a man who wants connection, even if he doesn’t quite know how to let himself have it.

Another gripping instalment that gave me more of the character development, humour and emotional depth I was hoping for!

⚠️ Trigger warnings: child exploitation, child abuse, violence, murder, childhood trauma and online predation themes.

**THIS IS AN EARC REVEIW**

The Charming Man by Christina Patterson
Releases October 20th, 2026

This book was such a crazy read (in the best way)!!! I loved how it explored the moral conflicts and showed just how far someone can go to justify their actions. John was such an interesting character to follow, and I was constantly questioning his decisions and side eyeing everyone. The story kept that same unsettling feeling from book one (Watching John) while still bringing new twists. I also really enjoyed how everything came together in the ending. A great conclusion to the duology and definitely a series I’d recommend!!! 🖤

Thank you to Christina Patterson for the arc! I absolutely loved this book!!

This book is a dark thriller featuring a morally grey protagonist who takes justice into his own hands. John is a compelling character because his actions constantly make you question whether he is a villain, a vigilante, or something in between. His desire to protect victims is complicated by his brutal methods, making his sense of justice both understandable and disturbing.

The mystery and investigation kept the story engaging and suspenseful. I enjoyed the layers of tension surrounding the case and the way the story explores how wealth, influence, and silence can protect dangerous people.

This is an unsettling read that deals with difficult themes such as abuse, exploitation, grief, trauma, and the failures of the justice system. It offers no easy answers about revenge or redemption, leaving you to question where justice ends and vengeance begins.

4.25★

After one of the worst reading slumps I’ve experienced, this book reminded me why I love psychological thrillers! I finished it in three days, couldn’t put it down, and found myself highlighting passages for the first time in MONTHS.

What makes this story shine isn’t necessarily the tension, but John’s mind. His constant battle between justice and vengeance, his moral contradictions, and the way he keeps justifying his increasingly questionable decisions had me completely hooked. I also loved seeing his struggle between wanting a normal life and being unable to escape his darker compulsions.

That said, I still preferred Watching John. I missed its darker atmosphere, calculated stalking, and obsessive planning. The second half also lost a little of the psychological intensity I loved in the beginning, with certain developments feeling more rushed.

Still, the emotional depth and satisfying yet frustratingly open ending made this a compelling sequel. And THAT cliffhanger?! I need answers! 👀🫣

Officially 4.25★, but any book that can pull me out of a slump this bad deserves an unofficial 4.5★!

Thank you to Christina Patterson for the ARC in exchange for my honest review🖤

“No good deed goes unpunished.”

Love how John went from being the watcher in book 1 to being watched himself in this book. Oh how the tables have turneddd👀
It was giving YOU + Dexter energy.

Anyway, this man is the definition of delulu, the way he kept justifying his questionable decisions.
lowkey funny😭

Similar to book 1, I was uncomfortable, suspicious of everyone and constantly going “wtf”💀

Overall, it was a wild ride full of questionable characters, uncomfortable situations and fun twists.

Felt like the ending tied everything together pretty nicely.
A good ending to a completed duology🙏🏼

Thank you Christina for sending me the arc!

I loved Watching John, but This Charming Man is even better. John leaving Miami has transformed him, and watching who he becomes is the heart of this finale. This time he's the one being watched, and you can feel him starting to doubt the instincts he's always trusted. The first book had me questioning right and wrong, and this one shows what those choices really cost. Then the plot twist hit and I couldn't stop, I had to finish it that same night. And the ending will leave you asking if this is really the end of the series. I'd love to see this story on TV or the big screen.

Meet John Sullivan. He’s living a quiet life, but when he discovers a school counselor preying on vulnerable students, his vigilante instincts kick in. And trust me, things get DARK!

We’re talking secret identities, disturbing evidence, powerful people covering up horrific crimes, and a mysterious figure who might be pulling the strings behind everything.

What I love about this psychological thriller is how it explores the fine line between justice and revenge.

John wants to protect the innocent, but what happens when his certainty becomes more dangerous than the people he’s hunting?

If you love morally complicated antiheroes, dark psychological suspense, vigilante justice, and twists that leave you questioning everything, add This Charming Man to your TBR!

After reading Watching John, I was really curious to see where John’s story would go next, and This Charming Man definitely gave me a lot to think about.

What I enjoyed most was being back inside John’s complicated mind. He believes he’s protecting people and doing what others won’t, but there were so many moments where I found myself questioning whether his idea of justice had crossed into something else entirely.

And this time, the watcher becomes the one being watched (To be honest I loved this switch). Seeing John slowly lose the control he usually has made the story even more interesting for me.

I also liked that the book doesn’t simply tell you whether John is right or wrong. You’re left to decide that for yourself.

It’s dark, uncomfortable, morally messy and full of questions about justice, revenge and consequences.

And that ending?? I genuinely sat there thinking about it after I finished.

Release date October 20th 2026. The upcoming release of this title was my reason for reading Watching John, the first book of which this is the continuance. Things are more complex and super twisty in this novel and held my interest - and my breath - as I read it through. I don’t know if there’ll be more but I could happily read another book or two involving this character.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 — A Fantastic Sequel to Watching John

Simply put, I devoured this.

If you loved “Watching John,” this is a must-read with the same addictive characters, sharp writing, and impossible-to-put-down pacing. Once again, Christina Patterson had me rooting for John while conveniently ignoring the fact that basically everything he does is a misdemeanor, at best.

What can I say? I love an anti-hero!

This series didn’t disappoint. The topics that were discussed in the story was done so well. I enjoyed the moral dilemma aspect of the book and enjoyed John’s character. I loved how the book didn’t ease up from what happened in book one but continued it over to the second one. Highly recommend!!

I have enjoyed reading this book. Was so intrigued after the first one, Watching John when I was approached to read it and so glad that I have taken this opportunity. The Charming Man is absolutely unhinged and crazy read. Love it even more than the first book but both are unique in their own way. Feeling while reading it is absolutely unsettling, always wondering where the author takes us, readers. Dark thriller with morally grey character who takes justice into own hands. what can be more interesting? Especially to see if he will get caught! He is a protector and a hero at same time being the villain! Love it. Recommend! Thank you, Christina Patterson and her team, for this chance. Would love 2nd physical book)) LOL

This is the second book in The Watching John series. I haven't read the first book, but this one works as a standalone. Sure, reading the first would have helped with the back story but I got the gist without it. The book basically asks if harming human predators is justified and if it ultimately comes with a cost. I enjoyed the book overall, and I really wanted to know what became of John and if he continued his pursuits.

I don’t read many thrillers but this one had me hooked from page 1! I loved book 2 more than book 1! I enjoyed seeing the parallels of the life John could have and wants to have battle with the life he’s compelled to continue!! There are many moments throughout this book that make you think about the flaws in our justice system and you can understand how the lines blur for John and he feels like he needs to take justice into his own hands!

Such a strong sequel. It’s tense from the beginning, but what got me was how much more emotional it became. You understand John, fear for him, and question him all at the same time.
