The Monster I've Become

Rate this book
Can someone truly love you when you’re looking your worst? Tate Lee asks herself this every time she sees Evander, the one trying to be her hero. But her worst isn’t bad hair and awful breath… She’s scary like the Boogey Man hiding in the closet. Out of all of the Supernaturals, why did she have to be this one?

Tate is a normal human working as a U.S. Marshal. Actually, scratch that. Tate was a human, but is now a creepy monster – with morals – currently working as a U.S. Marshal. No matter how many times she tries to tell herself she can be different, something happens to show there’s still darkness hiding inside. There’s only one person to blame and she’s at the top of Tate’s list… and she had better start running. After all, Tate doesn’t hide in closets to scare children at night. She hunts the monsters that steal away innocence.

ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I've read everything N.L. Hoffmann has written to date and I've loved all of it. With that being said, The Monster I've Become was a little harder for me to get into. I love the fact that we see characters from The Daughters of Darkness trilogy, especially Lucifer, but I didn't really like the female MC. She was a bit too intense for me at times but other than that I very much enjoy the premise of this book. Mrs. Hoffmann throws in some new creatures and mythology for us and I can't wait to see where the next book takes us.

There is also the signature humor throughout and you find yourself laughing out of the blue. The pace and flow were steady and once I started I didn't stop until I was finished. We learn new and interesting things in this book that I'm eager to explore in the next installment. Well done and I'm excited for the start of another read from the author.

This book grabbed me in the first few pages. I liked Tate and found Evander fun and interesting and was excited for the rest of book. It then got a little confusing to me lots of new people introduced and lots happening at once. I'd have liked Tate and Evander to have had more time to establish their relationship before the story sped up and I got a little lost.

I loved the basic story line even if I got a little lost with the many characthers.

Would I pick up book 2, I might!

After reading N.L. Hoffmann Daughters Of Darkness Series and loving her unique writing style that not only pulled you in but also made you really feel for the characters within as well as writing some exception sex scenes! With this in mind when I was ask if I wanted to read an advance copy of The Monster I've Become I totally jumped at the chance.

Straight away you are plunged head first into the deep end of the intricate plot which finds Tate driving with her best friend into her old home town to try and find her aunt's house. She hasn't seen her aunt since she was a girl, she remembers some family drama but what she doesn't know is that once she meets her aunt it's only there the true family drama begins to unfold. Secrets are a funny thing in life and in families they can be deadly, which in Tate's case they almost certainly are, thrust into a world of Supernaturals where some are friend and others are foe, it is up to Tate to work out not only who she really is and who she is becoming but also who she can really trust.

Evander is the King of the Warlocks (You may remember him from The Daughters Of Darkness Series), he meets Tate in a cell made of Earth where they are trapped together. He knows instantly hat Tate is and when he realises that she has no idea about the Supernatural world he helps her navigate it. From the instant they meet there in a connection between them, one neither can deny, but they come from two very different Supernatural groups who do not normally fraternize due to the monster that resides within one such as Tate. Together they face the challenges ahead where not all of the ones that are throw at them from an outside source but also come from within. Can they make it? Is Tate strong enough to not let her inner monster take over and will they survive each other?

There is a few cameo appearances from a few of our favourite Daughters Of Darkness characters which really brought a whole new flavour to the plot spicing it up that little bit more. I really loved it and as the first in this new series (What Hides Beneath) it was an excellent start truly reeling the reader in, I can't wait for book 2!

This one started like one of my new year's resolutions full of hope and potential and descended into self accusations and regret.
Firstly I have to say it was the cover's fault, it made me buy it so i take no responsibility for my actions, isn't it just creeply great.

But as they say you can't judge a book by its cover and I am sad to say that this for me was one of those books, it started with such great potential and I can't really put my finger on what went wrong.
All the elements were what I want from a story, Tate is great lead character with her wrestle between good and evil and skin crawling powers. It was with the love interests where it started to chafe for me, I just didn't like either of them, then Tate started irritating me and not mention Eric the ghost, and it was downhill from there.

Really disappointed with the book but maybe someone else can run with the idea because it has great potential.

I read this book again and have mostly the sames thoughts I did when I first read the book. However, I will add that the sort of love triangle with Evander, who I really liked in the previous series, Tate, and Gavin was just ... I really didn't like it. It smacked of cheating to me since there was supposed to be strong feelings between her and Evander. I get the lust part but it just didn't feel right for me since the two male characters could've been easily interchanged with each other in the sex scenes Tate had with either one. I found myself skipping them after the first few and had the thought that there was a bit too many of them in general.
Still liked the story, find the world really interesting, and look forward to see what happens next with Tate and the gang. I want to see how the Noble sisters feel about their brother too.

I really liked the Daughters of Darkness Trilogy--I think I’ve read it two or three times—and had no clue that this book would be set in the same world until I read the first chapter. I always wondered what was going to happen to Evander and didn’t know that Hoffman had planned on more books set in that world. I had read Tragically Wicked and wasn’t all that thrilled about it, so I was somewhat hesitant about reading this book since she looks to be a relatively newish author.
The humor was right on, I love the snark and quips exchanged between the characters. I was happy to see cameos of characters from the previous books. I also liked the idea of a Malefic and how they fit in the paranormal world. She doesn’t pull punches when describing things and that is clearly shown when talking about Tate’s powers. Bugs are just ... so gross. I can deal with spiders, snakes, and things of that natures, but roaches? Oh, hell no, thnx bibi. I wasn’t all that clear on what exactly the extent of her powers were and the fact that they are even scarier than shadows made me wonder more about it. Maybe when I read it again things will become more understandable
Some things seemed to be really convenient for Tate, a secret lair, uber powers, hurm.... No book is perfect and I did like this book, though one of the big things that bothered me was the ending. It seemed kinda anti-climatic; there was this big build up and just ... okay it is over? Did I miss something? I had to re-read the last part of the book to make sure I didn’t miss something.
There are a lot of things that I like about Hoffman’s writing one being her sense of humor and another being her character and world building. Another is her use of beings from the paranormal world. An author you like isn’t going to “hit it outta the park” with every book, there were some things that I liked very much in this book and something’s that I wasn’t too wild about, but I will certainly check-out the next installment of this series.

New Enemies & Old Friends

Tate & her BFF Eric were going to see Tate’s Aunt Frances because Aunt Frances had called Tate & asked her to come for a visit.

But, Aunt Frances had more than a visit in mind as Frances was a Malefic & Malefics were scary than the other paranormals. What Tate didn’t know was that she was 1 too.

This book also brings back some characters from The Daughters of Darkness series especially Lucifer & he’s still a hoot.

This book was very good in the good vs bad plot & at least getting rid of 1 of the bad guys; but it also has some sex scenes in it too. Overall if there is a book 2 I will definitely be reading that too.

The book reads like an action film - the main character is tough, sexy and witty. There is constant heat between Tate and the lead. Unlike other paranormal romances that are largely pep, this book actually takes the reader on an engaging intimate journey - one feels as though they are in the story with the characters. Well written and fun - a great escape.

*Warning: possible spoilers*

Tate and her friend her friend Eric are on their way to visit Tate's aunt. Except they end up kidnapped and Eric dead instead. As an evil Malifec, Tate's aunt isn't the nicest person, or even the nicest monster. She she's kidnapped Tate meets the warlock Evander.

Once they get out, Evander tries to help Tate figure out what she is and how to deal with that, finding her aunt, and ridding the world of monsters (even though she is one).

What I didn't like was that Tate initially doesn't want anything to do with Evander, yet can't seem to keep her hands off him once she does sleep with him. I mean, he's not an asshole, but he does ask "so you only like weak and submissive guys so you can get a self esteem boost?" Considering that's the kind of girl most guys want, isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black? If I were Tate I would have said such. A strong woman who wants a submissive guy (or not even that, just a guy that's not the dominant type) isn't in need of a self esteem boost. And I'm certainly not judging, but why is she so hot for him and vice verse? I thought their relationship could have used a bit more defining...

What I did like is the variety of creatures, monsters, etc that learn to work together, and that no matter what Evander sticks by Tate. Even when he could go with another woman he doesn't. He's Tate's and isn't "that guy". I liked the world building and drama that was created with the new supernatural beings, and I especially liked that some familiar characters from the Daughters of Darkness series made an appearance. Except, no Lucifer ;)

The writing really showed how no one is really what they seem and most of us hide the monster we really are. It's the select few of us who are honest that the world can't handle.

Interesting beginning to a new series!

Amazing!!!!!! The book is well written, smooth flowing and easy to read. Once I started it I couldn't put it down. The imagery is so vivid I could picture every scene unfolding around me. The characters, their emotions and the experiences they go through are depicted very well.

Tate is a 29 year old US Marshall. She lives with her best friend Eric and is your average normal person. She will receive a phone call from her Aunt Frances that will chance her life forever.
I love Tate. She is a take charge clear thinking woman. As her life changes drastically so does her personality. Evander took a bit to grow on me. Gavin I am still on the fence about, either love him or hate him.

I can't wait for the next book
