Freedom: A Jake Dani Novel

If you love thrillers, don’t miss this action-packed read! Here’s what one reviewer “I would award seven stars if I could, but I’ll have to settle for five. It’s that good.”
Jake Dani is a spy on another planet. Set about 90 years in the future, Jake “runs an espionage ring on the planet Rossa, an overflow world where people go to escape an overcrowded Earth. Unfortunately, they take their baggage with them…Baggage also includes prejudice of all kinds, including race, sex, and class.”
This science fiction novel starts off with a bang (literally) and never lets up the tension.

The story hits the ground running and rarely lets up. The chance for the characters and the reader (me) to pause and catch my breath are few. Jake is in and out of trouble so often that you'd think he had an evil spirit riding on his shoulder. Well, such is the life of a spy, I guess. But if that's it, I'll pass and just read about it (more fun).

The characters are well-developed and sympathetic (I don't like stories where I don't care what happens to the major characters).

I'm sure the next book will be a fun ride too -- if Jake lives through it.

Freedom a Jake Dani Novel  by Victory Crayne is the combination of POP Culture twist of Sci-Fi entwined with the tell tale of Espionage. With a battle for basic rights and freedom on a newly colonized planet, his love Mimi lost somewhere is a sea of crime Lords and land owners, villainous and prejudice people. Their is nothing else to do but to go into the entangled mess, leading his men and hoping to get out alive. All with Mimi and his men In tact.

There is one small problem, well actually quite large, with the crime lords and land owners at it to protect their "investments" , their is no safe place to keep low with out someone maybe seeing you. Though as determined as the criminals, Jake is equally or more to return Rossa to a state of Just and put a stop to the tyranny that is taking place.

Many are fleeing to the planet thinking they can escape their past such as their criminal past, dangerous past, escape arrest, bring old world thinking and views with them and bring this Newley colonized planet back to a time where ignorance led to more crime and suffering, racial views askew with new world technology. A even more dangerous place than the 40's , 50's, 60's and 70's and even early 80's.

What they an do whatever weapons and devices. Interesting though, even though Jake is a spy the new world futuristic technology does not fit with him. He is more of a classic, old school spy, believes in the doing things the old ways. The new futuristic complicate things even though going up against these dangerous criminals you can use all the help you can get, because "old school" is just not going to cut it against these monsters.

This you can classify under more under POP Culture read though it is very well blended through its classifications of Sci-Fi  with the throw in of Espionage. You can also see where even though it does talk about bringing about old world values it speaks in future sense as well past tense and present. It's a very nice blend and quite a imaginative story.

I love science fiction and spy novels so imagine my surprise when reading, Freedom, how the author blended both genres seamlessly. A futuristic James Bond? YES!

Jake Dani runs a spy ring on the planet Rossa, a colony to escape the massively overcrowded Earth. Unlike Earth, Rossa is run by a new set of rules. Criminals escape the cops by fleeing to Rossa, thinking no one will find them. Wrong. Prejudice runs rampant on Rossa and slavery is okay as long as it remains “humane”.

Everything is going well for Jake and his spies, that is, until his anti-slavery activist girlfriend goes missing. Jake calls in as many favors as he can to hunt her down before it’s too late.

I loved everything about this story. I loved Jake because he’s an old-school spy living in a futuristic world. The bad guys are deliciously fun to read and the technology they use are imaginative yet realistic (think Star Trek: TNG but kicked up a notch).

The author is a brilliant storyteller who writes fast-pace action scenes peppered with great dialogue. The characters she created were colorful yet realistic.

If you love science fiction and suspenseful stories, you have to read this book!

Favorite Character: I loved Jack. He reminded me of a futuristic James Bond. While he was a very black and white thinker, I could relate to him and his worldview.

Favorite Quote:

“She reached across the table and lay her left hand on top of my right. That said lots. A flood of memories came back. The caressing. The love making. The arguments. Oh yes, the arguments.”

"Freedom is an extremely well crafted espionage/sci-fi thriller. Readers will love this absorbing mystery (the first in a planned series) and its strong, dynamic and influential hero.” https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

The story follows Jake Dani, a spy with a cover job of private investigator on the new colonised planet of Rossa that’s 25 light years away from Earth. Jake's girlfriend, Mimi (executive director of the anti-slave railroad) gets arrested for protesting slavery and Jake comes to her rescue as he bails her out of prison. Soon after her arrest she goes missing after giving Jake an ultimatum, “Join my cause or we are over!” However, Jake has a natural resistance to being told what to do and finds himself in a dilemma on what to do and decides to go undercover and recruit his own spy team on a number of operations to find her. All of which results in his own capture and he is forced to work in the illegal slave trade. He soon gets involved in both the political and vicious ramifications and is forced to make some tough moral decisions that will change the course of his existence indefinitely as he seeks revenge on those who kidnapped Mimi and those who made him a slave.

Crane has produced a pulchritudinous, well-written story that is action-packed from the beginning to the end, with an unpredictable number of twists and turns that sets the stage for more instalments, in which I impatiently await.

I was asked to review this book and I was hesitant at first because of the bad "do it yourself" cover. Fortunately that is the only bad thing about this book. This is a fast paced sci-fi spy mystery. The plot was about slavery on a new colonized planet and Jake a spy fighting to saved his girlfriend and stop this horrible trade. The book is filled with lively characters and great dialogue. Combine that with a great plot and original world and you have an amazing read!
Do not let the cover make you pass this book by like I almost did. You will fall in love with Jake and get hooked by the suspense. I recommend to all you love sci-fi and spy books.
