Not a bad book and not a bad series. I found that some parts of it were a bit young but that could be misleading as there are (attempts at least at) more mature themes. The supers have "shown up" (shown back up?) and now the world is in trouble.

Half + of these supers are much of the mindset of Voldmort from harry Potter's world. Subjugate (or annihilate) the nonsuper population and run things to suit the "super population".

And it don't look that good for nonsupers and the "heroes" who are on their side.

Given the end of the first book, a twister tale would be expected but this one was far from it. Just like the first book in the series, everything was superficial, not to mention no rhyme or reason given for anything that happens in the story. All that was fine for the first one but this was way too artificial to keep listening.

All that Leopold talk and Kane being a superhero seemed close to nothing, for those who haven’t read the second book don’t expect too much from it. Somehow, there are many superheroes born and somehow they happen to form their own legions or work with the government and somehow Kane Andrews is still the most known superhero in that sort of a world. He also has a band of people who work as the good guys, help Andrews in “saving” the world, though the Tempest is crazy, he still doesn’t understand how to use his powers, he looses almost every time, such a sentimental teenager who simply refuses to put it through his head that he needs to be trained and just being a big mouth isn’t going to help.

Its still incomprehensible, why in the world Tempest is always expected to save the world when there are some genuine superheroes and why all of them are from the United States of America. Summing it up, although the first story also didn’t make sense yet it is a nice read but this one is just not worth the time.

There are so many things that happen in this book which need answers, everything is so simple and of course, the teenagers. Being the super hero that he is, he fails to stand up to his ex-girlfriend who keeps on insulting her, behaves like she has suffered much more than she should.

The narration was just okay, there were too many characters, variations could have been better. The production had no issues.

Few books have had me as engrossed as this one has in recent months. I couldn’t put it down it was so good! Rutherford writes such wonderful characters. This is a book about
'Supers' – so they obviously have super powers, but his characters are just typical people – they are fallible, make mistakes and even worse, they have emotions! That is one of the reasons this book is such a fantastic read. You get a real feel for the emotional impact the events are having on the heroes in this story, their frustrations and their pain. On the other side, the villains are just as cleverly written. Some are downright sadistic, as would be the case if some in the world developed super powers. Others are villains just because they take their abilities too far or just wreak havoc.
Another great aspect of Rutherford’s writing is his exploration of his characters motivations, from those that have gained abilities and powers, to family members and friends, to government agents.
Of course the best thing about this book though is that it is just plain old fashioned fun. This is an epic tale of good vs evil in a world where normal people have developed super powers and how they have decided to use them. And that means some awesome super powered fight scenes!!
It mainly follows ‘Tempest’ or Kane Andrews, our reluctant hero and his continued fight to be recognised as a hero and to protect his friends, family, his hometown, and ultimately, the Earth.
The descriptions of the fight scenes in this book are seriously mind blowing at times and leave you wanting more.
Once you start reading this book, you will find it difficult to put it down, as it is not only captivating, but very easy to read, and a lot of fun. It has a nice easy flow, with short chapters to keep you engaged.
If you are looking for a great read with well written, exceptional characters, and an engaging fast moving and fun story line, don’t miss this book!
Can’t wait for the next in the series…

Short, fun book. I had to read it, as it's book 2 in the series I recently started about teenagers who start developing super powers. This book is a enjoyable read, but you have to disregard a lot of plot issues, specifically, a lot of things happen that just would not happen if these event unfurled for real. I just felt like the author's imagination and research could have been a little more in tune with each other. Still, fun book.

Reader thoughts: It is six months after the first book. There are more supers, and the government is starting to round them up for experimentation. (Surprise!)

For some reason, most of the supers are bad guys. This reminds me of Steelheart, except ALL the epics are villains in those books, and Sanderson gives reasons why.

Rutherford never gives any reason WHY 99% (according to Samantha's estimates) of the new supers are bad. To my estimate, it seems like only 80% of the new supers are actually bad, but whatevs.

There were several times Kane could have used his super speed and didn't. If he can get dressed right in front of people, but all they see is a blur and then he's dressed, he can move faster than he often does. If he can have an entire epic battle with a super while someone is falling from a roof, he could fly faster than bullets or purple energy shots and more.

I liked that Kane had to figure out what it meant to choose to be a hero instead of just kind of fighting bad guys. He's really not very good at it. Even when he decided to clean up the bank he knocked down, he didn't ask how he could help. He just jumped in and began piling rubble.

I liked that Kane spent some time without his powers. I like that he tried to protect those he knew. It didn't make sense why the government was so interested in him, though, or why the government couldn't figure out how to work with the good supers. Or that any supers they created were somehow exempt from their "kill all supers" rule.

The ending was unsatisfying and overly dramatic. "I looked, and my jaw dropped. I couldn't believe it. Everything had changed." This goes on for another paragraph or two, telling the readers nothing in that time. Annoying!

Writer thoughts: The writing style is definitely dramatized with the verb word choice. Maybe this is supposed to hint at comic book supers?

Rutherford would not write, "He punched my nose," but rather things like, "His fist flew at my face, and my nose burst into an explosion of agony as the bones in my face crunched." Things were constantly flying and exploding and shooting and breaking.

I actually approve of this style, especially considering it is in the super hero genre. I would tone it down some for other genres, but there's no reason to stick with the basic, "He punched my nose" when you can get more momentum from changing a few words. Plus, it puts the readers into Kane's head better and adds more sound effects.

Well ... it is time for war. The entire book is ups and downs of how Supers come out into the society. Governmental anti super agency going psycho and betrayals of all kinds.

The protagonists heart is tested and you are introduced to some time travel plots. The pacing and plotting was good. Given the media we have we get a bit numb by the death and destruction.

The author is hurtling the book to a certain destination and keeps revealing tiny tit bits here and there . You can introduced to strategies that supers tend to use and how non supers and supers get together to gain a semblance of control.

It was a decent read but nothing that made me jump with excitement.

Wow this was hard to get through

I really liked the first one but I'm sad that I wasted my money on this one. The whole losing powers shtick gets old and you do it twice...Also this kid is the worst fucking hero ever he losses every fight he gets in. And let's everyone just talk shit about him all the time. He's supposed to be the most powerful super but gets his ass handed to him by elastakid. Why do the others see him as some kind of leader when all he does is make horrible decisions? All this book did was frustrate me with a weak mc.

At first, the second volume of the series seemed more interesting than the first, with new characters and situations that really expand the story universe considerably. But at some point toward the end, things started to feel both a bit repetitive and rushed, not to mention sprinkled with typical clichés of the genre. Still, the author presents a solid prose with virtually no revision mistakes and a well-formatted book, so I'll keep the four stars. It's a good book overall.

Not as good as book 1

It was ok, but less coherent than book 1. Even with the world building, it kept losing my attention. I’m gonna try book 3, but don’t expect to finish the series if it’s as lackluster as this one. Book 1 was quite solid, kept my attention, and made me care about Tempest. This one was just confusing.

I really enjoyed the first book, but the writing on this book felt super cheezy. Lots of interesting and good ideas with bad execution. After the first book I thought this might be a great series, but now I'm stopping here.

Wow, the killing jus got dialled to 11 and guess it's going to get worse in book 3. It's still a fun read regardless of its flaws. Having said that, there is still no origin story and a few plot holes. I'm still a sucker for the superhero genre, soon definitely getting the next book.
Kane must either use google maps on his phone when flying or one of his powers is a map and pin in his end.

I read this book after checking out the first one. I thought the first one was okay. Had alot of flaws, but it was what it was. I was on the fence if I wanted to continue and read the sequel, but I had a busy day at work and I needed something to listen to so I continued.

* The dialogue in the book was very underwhelming. It just seems like there were things left over that were not expanded upon.

* The book started off with one antagonist. She was very underwhelming and very one dimensional. I can't even say it was a typical antagonist, because a typical antagonist is at least interesting. Then also, the antagonist had this weird thing of wanting to know more about Tempest's real name rather than learning more about him as a super. It was weird.

* Another thing about antagonists, It's seems about 80% the way through the book, the author changed who the main antagonist was. And I'm all for multiple antagonists, but the first antagonist just seemed to be there one moment and then is never mentioned again until the very end of the book. Then the new antagonist took over. The new antagonist didn't become the antagonist until about the last 20% of the book. At least the new antagonist seems have a little bit more depth to him.

* One character in the book just turned super nice after getting his ass whipped in "The Second Super" and then just randomly turns back into an asshole with a very bad semi-explanation as to why.

* Most of the new characters in the book had very limited or even no character development at all. Halfway through the book, there were significant secondary characters that all you about them was their power and maybe a first name. I think what happened in the author created to many secondary characters and just didn't have space to really develop them.

* I listened to the audio book version and again the narrator is really at times. At best he's so so, but many times just bad. I thought he's a good voice actor, but I this was the wrong book series for him.

* About 70% into the book, you were asking yourself, is this time travel. What is this that's going on when a guy is existing in two different time periods about 70 years apart.

* I mean Super Task Force? We really can't get more creative than that?

* There are points in the book where characters just randomly start yelling are hilariously bad. What makes it worse is not that it's not just one character doing this, but it's like five and six of them that just randomly snap and start over the top yelling over simple situations.

* I know the protagonist has to go through their trials, but damn, someone please get Kane some training.

I wish the site had half stars, because the book isn't as good as a 3 and it isn't as bad as a 2.

This is a book with a story that had potential, but got worse in the next installment.

A fun book albeit a little superficial.
Tempest's power seen to have been tunned down so he can be beaten by everyone, very much like Neo from Matrix
So now there are a lot of supers. It was expected since we read the title of the first book.
The story is good in this book. The future part got a little disconnected though.
The powers could use a little more varying. And the "superman"s could learn to use their powers so they don't lose so easy.

Pretty fun and a definite improvement of a second super, truth be told I would have merged the two together as they'd only just make a full book between them, I also think it would have made for a more satisfying conclusion to the first book. I felt like there was more characterisation with this book and Kane's not quite so quick with bouncing his emotions around the place, which I think is a benefit of the larger word count.

Anyway overall there's a lot to enjoy about this book the fights a pretty cool and some of the supers Logan Rutherford have come up with have been interesting, in particular I want to praise the prison scenes and the confrontation at the school with Atlas and Macy. Its a little disappointing that I'm still seeing some inconsistencies though, 2 books in and I still cant tell if Kane has Super durability as well as regeneration, one moment he's punching and breaking his hand letting his regeneration fix the damage the next he's performing feats of strength without any damage at all.

Obviously I'm coming across as quite negative about the book, but this is one of my favourite genres and I'll admit I'm overly harsh when judging. Besides if you read the first book and enjoyed it then you know what to expect and you'll enjoy this one with a greater story progression.

If anything is taken away from this I'd just say that there were a lot of opportunities missed with regards to character progression, Drew's news the events with Macy etc. These could have been really powerful moments that would have a huge impact on a teenager but are over within mere pages (victims of the short length of the book I suspect). However there are genuinely great ideas here and the writer is very clear and fast paced with his fight scenes.

First off, five stars for the cover alone. I mean look at it, it's glorious. Next I'd like to say that this was a pretty good book though a tad short.

Pros: Superheros, good fight scenes, fun easy to digest story, not too childish. Liked the way we stayed plausible with results of actions, though people still haven't come to terms with the fact that no matter how strong you might be, even if you can lift the Empire State Building for example, THE BUILDING WILL BREAK UNDER PRESSURE! You grab a wall and start to lift a two-story building, but the wall is just cement. It will break if you hold it with your hands and you'll end up with two handfuls of wall. If you had giant hands you would fare better but not by much.*sigh*

Cons: A few typos, not very deep character-wise, a bit rushed for some reason, and we didn't progress in a coherent line story-wise. We seemed to be darting through a few different pats of story that were meant to come through at the end as a fully developed plot, but we missed a little making it seem as if we hadn't completed a set concept. Do that two or three times and you have a good story in your mind if your willing to use your intuition to feel it out, but if you weren't you end up a little unsatisfied.

But good read though, can't wait to read the next one.

Stars: Story: 4/5 + Cover: 5/5 = 5

Yep, love the cover.

P.S

If I find a way to make GIFs easily I'll edit this and make a longer review.

Gripping read.

The only thing missing from this series is the answer to the question, "Why are these people developing powers? Where are they coming from?" Hopefully Rutherford answers this in the upcoming books! I couldn't put it down, I blew through the first two books with no problem. I find the new revival of superheroes fascinating, and this series is just another great example. It's exciting and Kane is depicted as a realistic teenage boy. Unexpected blows keep coming from around the corner. Keeps you on the edge of your seat!

The same again

Many books like this read. Plots and situations mostly all the same. Shy unassuming kid gets powers. Finally owns up to them when evil super appears. People get killed, shy kid realizes only he can beat him.
He almost masters his powers but still needs help to improve himself and win.
BTW the evil super seems to be demented. Not to give away the plot but Agent Loren is a crazy as the super villain. Perhaps we'll find out why in the next book.

I thought that this was a really fun book. I am eagerly anticipating the future sequels. I want to know what motivates Director Loren. My heart was breaking for Kane. He is trying to hard to learn as he goes along, and there is so much pressure on every side to not get it wrong. I so want to see him succeed.

Rather juvenile and somewhat tedious. Very redundant in places. The storyline keeps me wanting to find out what happens, but sometimes I have to put the book down just bc it gets kind of stupid and puerile. But hey, they're free via Kindle Unlimited, so I'll keep reading and hoping they get better.

Interesting world, a bit dark.

It's an interesting world although it seems a bit pessimistic and dark to me for a super world, it's more about freedom fighters in a post apocalyptic world.

Fun but super light

I did like it but it is thin and some of it is not logical. The characterization are too shallow and the strategies of the supers and the government's actions are not always logical. I don't mean to be too negative - it is fluffy light entertainment.
