About the author

Dario Fo was an Italian satirist, playwright, theatre director, actor, and composer. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997. In 2007 he was ranked Joint Seventh with Stephen Hawking in The Telegraph's list of 100 greatest living geniuses. His dramatic work employed comedic methods of the ancient Italian commedia dell'arte, a theatrical style popular with the proletarian classes. He owned and operated a theatre company with his wife, the leading actress Franca Rame. Dario Fo died in Milan on October 13th 2016, at the age of 90.

Una commedia in grammelot nel pieno spirito di Dario Fo. Chiunque conosca già il film d'animazione non può non leggere l'opera da cui è tratto. Un capolavoro di comicità all'insegna dell'equivoco e del farsesco che tratta di temi storicamente fondamentali. Fo in questa commedia presenta il tema del colonialismo spagnolo, della percezione dell'altro. L'incontro-scontro tra due civiltà opposte e diverse. Il tutto naturalmente in chiave comica. Si veda ad esempio l'equivoco dello scambio. Johan Padan viene scambiato dagli indigeni per una sorta di divinità e dunque, il personaggio caratterizzato da un tono scanzonato e che vive alla giornata, riesce perennemente a cavarsela in un modo o nell'altro.
Lo stesso equivoco che viene presentato in "La Strada per El Dorardo" di Bibo Bergeron, film d'animazione del 2000 in cui Tullio e Miguel vengono scambiati per divinità in quanto gli indigeni li vedono per la prima volta su un cavallo.
Un equivoco che in ambo le opere viene presentato in chiave giocosa e ironica, ma che tuttavia ha le sue radici nella storia. Infatti gli indigeni americani, scambiarono davvero gli spagnoli per divinità secondo le loro profezie.
Lo stile della commedia contiene comunque il turpiloquio anche se è dosato e perfettamente inserito nella storia, non esagerato né fastidioso. Come ritmo si presenta parecchio rocambolesca nei fatti, anche se la sensazione è comunque quella di una certa staticità, sicuramente data dal fatto di essere stata pensata originariamente per la scena.

In this hilarious retelling of the Columbus story, we meet Padan, a crude, narcissistic, nobody, who somehow manages to not only survive the New World but also thrive. A one man show, this is not a monologue but rather a series of dialogues. Fo, as Padan, tells us his adventure and embodies all of the characters and situations he may/ may not have met along the way. As he speaks, we as readers/audience become so engrossed in his tale that it almost becomes difficult to decipher where fact/fiction deviate.
Altogether, Fo, like Dylan is a Nobel Prize winner whom some may argue was wrongfully bestowed with an award. I humbly disagree. In this work, we see literary tradition. Poetics, history, theatre, it all marinates in a homogenous mixture that is altogether Fo. A master craftsman, he is a jester/bard a comic troubadour who raises awareness to unjust power by using allegory, and at times, blatant realism. Witty, funny, and with a pace that is enjoyable but not lazy, I was entertained and enlightened. Further, I felt the translation of the story was well made and that I did not lose any messaging of basic humor due to linguistic differences. Overall, a great read!
