Two pirate captains. One wish. Countless secrets. Salt water may be thicker than blood, but how many secrets can a friendship survive?
Forced into servitude by pirates, Vaan and Sirene survive two years beneath their tyranny before seizing their chance for vengeance and freedom.
Fifteen years later, closer than sisters and pirates themselves, they serve as dual captains aboard the Kingfisher. When Sirene learns of an enslaved siren said to grant her savior a single wish, she sees a chance to give children born as she was the future she never had.
But the hunt grows complicated when an old debt forces Vaan to welcome two new—and begrudgingly handsome—recruits aboard. Worse, a ruthless Navy admiral from her past is searching for the same prize.
With Sirene determined to reach the siren first, Vaan is forced into impossible choices to keep her alive. And the more she hides, the more she risks destroying the bond she’s desperate to protect.
With powerful enemies closing in and a wish worth killing for almost within reach, Vaan and Sirene must discover how far they’re willing to go for each other—and how much a wish is truly worth.
I really enjoyed this!! On Fortune’s Tides is a swashbuckling adventure with a looot of mystery and a hint of the supernatural, which made it the perfect early-October read.
Vaan and Sirene, the protagonist duo, stole the show for me. It's rare for me to read a book where the main characters actually act like real people. Even when they make bad choices, it always makes sense for who they are so you don't get that frustration of characters doing things just to push the story forward.
The romance between the lead characters and their respective beaus felt earned, too. It was messy and nothing came easy, which made it so worth it when it all finally connected… just to kind of fall apart again at the end lol. Their stories are clearly not over and I want moreee!
The pacing kept me hooked and there's always something happening. These girls are making moves. The settings feel immersive without being overdone, and it’s genuinely neat learning new things along the way, like old-timey ship terminology or what a cozener is.
Oh, and the villains were villain-ing. There’s a lot more I can say, but know this:
I hit 98% and honestly got so nervous because I wasn't ready for it to end. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SECOND BOOK!
