Ruby's Choice is an engaging and enchanting novel which captures love's first bloom and quickens the heart. This is a coming of age story, set in the late 1970’s, with hints of the paranormal that blossom even more in the second and third books.
Everglade, Tennessee, 1977
Ever since Ruby discovered an amber-encased spider web in the Campbell Ridge Cave, she has had dreams of births, deaths and glimpses into the future. Ruby’s dreams have foretold the daughter of her high school friend, Cathy, the death of her beloved Aunt Sammie, and the coming of a new love in her life.
Ruby’s shift is coming to a close at Everglade General Store. As she stacks the last row of bath soap, Ruby recalls the delicious dream she had the night before. In the dream, a gorgeous guy is kissing a tickle spot, just behind her left earlobe, sending shivers up her spine. If only that dream could come true, instead of the one where a state trooper gives her a seventy-five dollar speeding ticket!
Ruby snaps back to reality when she hears the store’s front door bells chime. If she didn’t know any better, she’d say the frickin’ Adonis from her sexy dream just walked through the door. Reed Jackson and Brent Brown introduce themselves to Ruby as members of the local baseball team her brother, George, manages. Brent mentions they specifically came out to the store to meet George’s hot, little sister.
Ruby is slightly confused when she hears Reed murmur Tap It under his breath, but then she remembers the rumor going around campus about Reed and Brent’s dating game. Tap It is a game where the two best friends compete to have a girl profess undying love to one of them. And Tap It is a winner takes all—all of what, though, Ruby has no clue.
Ruby decides that she’ll play along, but according to her rules. She’ll suss out if either of these players is worthy of her love and respect.
One thing is for sure, Ruby is no pawn. Who will be Ruby’s Choice?

“To the Ditch Lane Diaries. May we grow in knowledge and use our powers to help others.”
I received this copy of book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
It was a big pleasure for me reading this book. A light, captivating and with a different kind of bent to the most NA stories that I ever read. Ruby Jane Glenn, together with Sandy and Anna—her best friends came in a creepy cave that turns out to be a changed of destiny for the three of them. They found three gems and each of them discovered the capabilities of each precious stones. As the years passed by, Ruby Jane discovered that some of her vivid dreams, good or bad turned to become real. But even though she knew her own fate, she made a decision to make her destiny go with her own flow.
To be honest, I really didn’t read what the synopsis of the book and its reviews. Is it because I want to judge the book based on what I had felt while reading this, and I really want to dive into the story without expecting “big” based on the synopsis. So, this was what I have concluded.
As I turn the page of this beautiful book (I really love the cover of it, honestly) my excitement for this book grows really big. The story has a simple twist not only to the main point but also for main character. It was not a classic NA story with sex, love, you name it. But, it has some mysterious and exciting part for the character—Ruby. As I said from the first paragraph, Ruby and her best of friends found a gems that later on became a reason to have their own “powers”. No! It was not a fantasy. It’s just the author D.F. Jones gave her story a simple twist that I indeed liked it.
To Ruby Jane, hey girl! I am a little bit annoyed at you at first. But as the years stories went by, I was able to know you better. There were some parts that she became indecisive with some of her decisions. But, well—who are the characters that have you read doesn’t became indecisive with their decisions? Name it! My comment was just simple, “Flawed characters are the best!”
To the story, um.. expect some kind of BIG love triangle (If you “hate” love triangle stories, better leave my review. LOL. :P) Okay, this story was a perfect combination of love, friendship and choosing your own destiny. 4 out of 5 stars was my rating for this book. Almost a perfect story for me, but I honestly became bit (just a little bit) confused to the point-of-views of the characters, namely—Ruby, Reed and Brent. But, because I have the power to cope up easily, I was able to manage to go with the flow in the book. And because of that, I am excited to continue this extraordinary Ditch Lane Diaries and to know what will happen for the three of them.
D.F. Jones is really a good author. She really writes something that I hope she will grow more in this kind of passion she is doing right now. For all the Indie authors, you really captured my heart!
Okay guys, this is my book and I wanted it on my shelf. Of course, I love it and I've read it a thousand times. I trust you will love Ruby's story....as much as I loved writing it.
2/5 stars. ebook, 173 pages. Read from April 06 to 18, 2016.
I would like to thank the Online Bookclub for providing me with a copy of this book for review. I selected this novel as I found the plot description to be very intriguing, however, the plot that I actually read left me disappointed. I was under the expectation that this book was going to be more about three friends who discovered some fascinating magical objects but instead I was left with a romance novel that required no magical interludes. However, this book still has many good qualities and would appeal to anyone interested in the romance genre.
As children, Ruby and her friends, find a cave with some interesting remains. Each of them pockets an item from the cave to keep. Set in Tennessee the late 1970s, Ruby is now a young adult with big dreams to run and manage the grocery store that she is working at. She has also long discovered that the item that she discovered in that cave with her friends as a child is no ordinary item, in fact, it allows her glimpses into the future through her dreams. During one vibrant dream, she sees a man whom she does not recognize but sees herself falling madly in love with him. As destiny would have it, the handsome stranger, Reed, comes in to the shop while she is working along with his equally handsome friend, Brent. She is deeply attracted to them both but she can’t shake the dream she had with Reed. She soon discovers that the two of them are notorious players who have created a game they call “Tap It”. Each of them will date the same woman and who ever she says she loves first is the winner in which they will then both cut ties with her. Disgusted, Ruby is determined to beat them at their own game and tries to play them both. However she undermines her own feelings in the process as well as the power of the destiny that was predicted for her in her dreams.
While the writing wasn’t terrible, the story just wasn’t for me. And to be honest, the author could have completely cut the part out of the cave and the magical items and just focused on the romance between the characters because that was clearly the central story. If the book description and beginning plot had been described as such, then I likely wouldn’t feel so deceived right now. Even Ruby’s friends felt like unnecessary characters, especially Jerry. His character literally adding nothing to this plot and no place in this book, though I’m sure he was thrown in so that it could tie in to the next book. I don’t like it when authors do that and an editor would have been able to spot that, but that is one downsides of self published books. The characters, while described well were extremely stereotypical. Ruby was the “it” girl that had it all, beauty, brains and boldness. Nothing new. Overall the magical sub plot felt unnecessary and randomly thrown in just so the author could create a magical series involving the friends.
Having said that, the author has a solid writing style and can most definitely tell a story. I was intrigued enough to finish the novel, even if some of the romance turned me off. While romance may not be a genre I enjoy reading, this book will be a winner for anyone who appreciates the genre.
I won this book in a giveaway on the author's Facebook page, and I was really excited to read this book, as I've heard nothing but good things from my friends on OnlineBookClub.org. Unfortunately, I guess I am the oddball who just didn't get into this book at all. Sorry about that. Maybe I am not the target audience or something? I don't know... I just didn't like any of the characters, especially either of the males in the rather predictable love triangle. The main character was a Mary Sue with horrible taste in men. The supernatural bits were the only thing I found interesting, but there were only about 10 pages worth of that in the whole book. Being from TN, with lots of family in the Nashville/Franklin/Brentwood area, I thought I would enjoy reading a book that takes place in my homeland... but actually I just found it a bit stereotypical and kind of condescending. It made me embarrassed to think that this is how people from other areas of the world will now view me. I'm not like anyone in this story, and I don't know anyone else who is, either. Yeah, again, sorry. I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't.
A love triangle and prophetic dreams figure into a coming-of-age story told in a new book that is set in Rutherford County, Tennessee, in the late 1970s.
Dawn Jones, a Murfreesboro marketing agency owner, is the author of "Ruby's Choice," the first of what will be three self-published books in the "Ditch Lane Diaries." Jones is the owner of a full service marketing, advertising and design agency serving Middle Tennessee businesses. I interviewed her recently about her novel.
I don't normally write about romance novels -- for good reason -- since I'm not exactly the target audience. However, I'm always up for a new adventure, and I will say I enjoyed reading "Ruby's Choice." It made for a refreshing change of pace, was well-written and kept me engaged.
The choice that is mentioned in the title has more to do than with Ruby simply choosing between one of two love interests. Ruby's choice is based on the gift of having prophetic dreams that she receives while exploring a cave during a scene at the beginning of the book with her best friends Anna and Sandy. I won't give away too much, except to say the girls have a strange encounter with a "messenger" who will be revealed throughout the series. Ruby can tell when someone she loves will die and can catch a glimpse of the love of her life.
Her choice will affect all those closest to her, including her best friends, each of whom will be featured as the point-of-view character in the followup novels in the "Ditch Lane Diaries" series. "Anna's Way," the second book, is underway. The third book will be "Sandy's Story."
"Anna's Way" is actually on hold until Jones finishes work on an unrelated project, but it should be finished in February or March. "Antique Mirror" is a short story she is currently writing for a Halloween anthology called "Mirror, Mirror."
Jones did a great job for what is her inaugural book.
She said she decided it was time to write for herself after using her creative talents for others for 17 years.
"I have tried off and on ... to write short stories or a play, or once a full-length novel," she said. "I wanted to write something for myself. I am so blessed and have wonderful clients."
While watching a Comic Con panel last September on the release of the "Outlander" series, the author said she wrote one chapter at a time, Jones said. Writing short chunks made the process seem easier than tackling an entire manuscript, and three months later, she had written the manuscript of "Ruby's Choice."
"It doesn't resemble anything now as it was like in the beginning," Jones said. "I wrote so fast and some of it was off the wall."
Like all good writers do, Jones kept tweaking the manuscript. She used a good book editor and proofreader as well.
The end result tells. "Ruby's Choice" expertly blends romance, humor, paranormal mystery and a bit of action together to make an intriguing tale.
Here are some facts about the book from Jones:
-The chapter titles are all from '70s songs.
-The community of Everglade mentioned in the book was a real community in Rutherford County in the 1850s to early 1900s -- it's now called Rockvale. Jones' great-great-grandfather, Mr. Burns, ran the general store that is featured in the story.
-The Campbell Ridge Cave where Ruby receives her gift (a pivotal part of the story) is based on a real cave, Snail Shell Cave.
-Opryland and Middle Tennessee State University are settings for part of the story.
Of setting the story in 1970s Middle Tennessee, Jones said, "I wanted to write what I was familiar with. I was not a college student then but I was familiar with the time period."
I was super excited to receive Ruby's Choice, so thanks a bunch to the Author and Bewitching Book tours. When I saw the cover, it instantly reminded me of summer and bonfires.
Hmm, i'd have to say my favorite "chapter" was the prologue. There were more exciting parts of the book, but for me, the prologue really drew me in. My overall fave genre of books is YA Paranormal or SciFi...pretty much anything that isn't real. lol. The prologue talks more about the spider web encased in amber that is mentioned in the description. Some quite weird things happen in the prologue that really makes me want to read the book to see just how it all plays out. The majority of the rest of the book focuses a lot on the romance with less on the paranormal. I did read somewhere though, that the paranormal comes out more in books 2 and 3....so i'm really excited about that.
So the rest of the book, It was great too. It starts off many years after the prologue when Ruby is almost 20. (so i guess this makes it NA?) She meets these two guys at the store where she works. She is instantly attracted to both and realizes that she's had a dream about one of them before. The rest of the book goes through her dating and attraction towards the two...and ultimately leads to her choice. *wink, wink*
For the characters, i'd say they are written great. I really appreciate when the characters are written very differently and with different personality. When trying to think back on a book, i get completely confused when they aren't. I'm happy to report that the characters here are great!
The setting was amazing! I may be biases though. I did spend one summer in Tennessee when i was younger....but still, the author did a great job in making me see the surrounding. I love Fall and Summer books. Yes please!! Hmm, maybe the book was pulling up some memories...but it was awesome.
The story was pretty good. Ruby was feisty and funny and i really appreciated that. I, for one though, wouldn't have even looked at those guys when they came into the store. There were gorgeous.... but i would probably have found it odd for them to come onto me so strongly after merely seeing me. I would have told them to "get lost"....but i'd probably stare as they walking away. lol. I slightly have a thing against weird dudes messing with me...it annoys me.... but i'm probably just strange. lol. They did turn out to be pretty nice though.... Mostly.
Overall, i really enjoyed this book. It was a sweet and funny love story...but with some drama to keep it entertaining. I had no problems with the story or characters for the most part. One thing i'd like to mention is that this book does contain scenes with under age drinking and sex. I think my readers know by now that i don't ever condone either in YA books....but i think this really was more like a NA. Either way, for my younger readers, i wanted to put in a warning.
Ruby's Choice was the first book I have read by D.F. Jones. Ruby's Choice was an amazing book full of drama, mystery, obstacles, secrets, love, and friends! This book really does have it all. One thing I really enjoyed was that there were two different stories going on at the same time. D.F. Jones really impressed me. I absolutely loved all the characters and that is always a huge plus! It is hard to enjoy a book when there is a character in it that you can not stand.
This book is about Ruby and her friends Sandy and Anna, who discovered a set of stones while exploring Campbell Ridge Cave. These stones are very special stones and have picked the three girls for a reason. Each girl is now destined for something greater and at this point in time, all three are still unsure as to what it is. Ruby's Choice obviously focuses a bit more on Ruby than the other girls. Ruby is faced with a big choice in this book. Who knew this choice would be about boys! Ruby is stuck and unsure which boy to date. I can not really say more without giving things away! But I can say that these boy looked at Ruby like she was a game. Everything changed when Ruby proved that she could play the game better.
"There, I have professed my love to you, the game is over. You have won." He said," Silly goose, I told you this thing between us has nothing to do with Tap It."
As I was reading, I felt like I was watching a movie! This book was so entertaining and fun to read. I picked this book up and had it read within a few hours. I absolutely LOVE, love triangles so I ate this book up. A lot of people hate love triangles, and I have even witnessed a few people leaving books bad reviews just for the fact that they do not like love triangles. In my opinion, they make the book more fun. You are more into the relationships and you even pick a team in hopes that the person picks the boy or girl that you like better too. Love triangles are extremely frustrating and I totally feel for all the people involved, but I just love them. I already mentioned this above, but I did love how the author had Ruby's boy problems and the stone mystery going on at the same time. While reading, I had completely forgotten about the girls and their stones until the end when Ruby and the girls bring it up again. We do get a little insight on the stones and what they mean at the end! So you definitely have to read the book to see what boy Ruby picks and what the girls are destined for. You should also read this book to check out what kind of game "Tap It" is! But to be honest, you just need to read this book!
D.F. Jones really surprised me and I am so excited to finish this series. I am now a huge fan of D.F. Jones' work. Her writing was so unique and flowed so perfectly that I forgot I was even reading. I highly recommend this book.
The author was kind enough to send me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.
I couldn't put this book down once I started it. The ending was such a crazy twist I did not see coming. Ruby and her friends were exploring a cave when they stumbled into a hidden room where Ruby finds a hidden stone; after she leaves the cave with the stone she begins to have dreams that foretell the future. So, when the guy she dreamed about Reed walks into her job she is very excited especially because he is very HOT. What she doesn't know is that Reed and his friend Brent walking into the store was no coincidence, they walked in to meet her and to start a game called TapIt where they both try get the girl fall in love with one of them, but as the game goes on Brent and Reed really fall in love with her and one of them confesses the rules of the game it is then that Ruby decides to play the game as well, but someone will get hurt she just hopes its not her.
This book was so good! Ruby was such a strong character she didn’t take crap from anyone and when it came to the game she was the one calling the shots. I fell in love with Reed immediately he was such an amazing character and knew what he wanted; I also really liked Brent even though he did come across as a little over possessive at times. This love story had me in an emotional roller-coaster towards the end I had my ugly crying face on lol. When you start the book it seems that it's going to be a paranormal, but Jones focuses mostly on the love story aspect, there is paranormal throughout the book, but like I said it mostly concentrates on the love story. The ending was much unexpected, I mean really unexpected I was in shock when I finished the book. I really loved all the characters in this book they all have a special place in my heart. I really enjoyed this book and it’s the perfect coming of age story with a splash of paranormal in it.
Ruby's Choice is the first book in the Ditch Lane Diaries. It tells how and where the three girls, Ruby, Anna, and Sandy, received their stones and their gifts. It also tells the story of one summer of Ruby's life: the summer of 1977 when she becomes involved in a dating game with Brent and Reed, two college seniors who play on her brother's baseball team.
At first, I found it kind of hard to get into this book. I was intrigued by the idea of three friends having gifts of prophetic dreaming, healing, and soul reading, but I was put off by the thought of the dating game that Reed and Brent played. It just reminded me too much of the good looking popular jocks I knew in high school that didn't have time for anyone they thought was beneath them, unless it's was to cook up some kind of game to embarrass or take advantage of the girl.
However, I did continue reading, and soon became engrossed in the book. I enjoyed Ruby's character and the way she was self confident and that she stood up for herself. I liked the way she didn't give in to what others expected from her and made up her own mind about what she wanted to do. I also liked Reed's character because he knew what he wanted and decided the best way to go about getting it, even though he sometimes made mistakes. He learned from the mistakes, and that was important to me.
I didn't like Brent's character. He scared me because he was so quick to anger and to try to fight. I know from experience there are guys like that out there, but I don't like reading about them in a story because I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop and someone to get hurt. I also thought the book was too short. There were some interesting twists later in the book, but they were not explored in this book. Maybe they will be in one of the other books in the series.
Overall, this was a pretty good book. I will read the rest of the books in the series to find out what happens with the other girls. I would recommend this book for ages 17+ because there is graphic sex and some adult language.
4.5 stars! The book started out a little slow for me, but it didn't take long for it to pick up. It was almost like a book someone would write in a creative writing class in college. It was unique and romantic with a mix of angst and sexiness. The story is set in the late seventies and it stayed true to that period of time. I could see everything in story so clearly like I was a part of it! There was one steamy scene that had me like oh heyyyy!!! I loved all the characters and I was so worried how this little triangle was going to work out. It kind of broke my heart. Pretty much everything I thought was going to happen didn't which is huge for me! The ending came as a complete surprise!! I'm so excited to read the next book!!
Full review to be published on The Cubicle Escapee I completely and utterly enjoyed every moment of this book! This is a very fast paced read that will have you wanting more!
A very nice read from a first-time author! Will look forward to the rest of the series. Ruby's Choice has very good character development and an engaging story line -- with the added bonus of a little spicy romantic adventure.
I was originally concerned that this was going to be another typical romance novel. Ruby got me. She wanted honest love. She stuck to her standards and didn't just give in because a man wanted her to. I was impressed by the book and will be adding this author to my long reading list
RUBY'S ’s CHOICE, The Dreamer, is the first installment in the Ditch Lane Diaries series. The author, D.F. Jones, has a wonderful writing style that brings the characters to life. This story is well written with a great plot and characters. This is just one possible storyline of the on-going war between the light and dark. You don't need to believe in The Creator, Angels or Evil to enjoy this excellent story.
In 1972 Ruby, along with her best friends, Anna and Sandy, investigate the Campbell Ridge Cave. Ruby discoveres a crystal artifact, but as she held it she got the feeling of someone watching. Quickly leaving the artifact and the cave, they each find a mysterious gemstone in their possession. For the next several years they never spoke of that day or the gemstones again.

With the evil that entered their lives they will need to learn more about those powers to battle the evil and save their friend.
RUBY'S CHOICE is the first book in the Ditch Lane Diaries Collection. Get ready for romance, beautiful men, action, and a lot of laughs.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first in a series that features friendship and love with some supernatural elements.
Ruby and her friends Anna and Sandy had an interesting encounter when they were younger, which unlocked powers within them which came to fruition later in life. These powers: prophetic dreamer, divine healer and soul reader, will work together for a great cause. Fast forward and Ruby is in college. Not usually one for dating, Ruby is pursued aggressively all of a sudden by Reed and Brent. When she finds out that it is all a game to see if they can get her to fall in love with one of them, she tries to turn it around only to find herself deeply in love. And so the trouble begins…
The story is a sweet look at the intricacies of romance. Sometimes you fall in love when you least expect it and sometimes when it is offered you turn it away. Not too much was focussed on the supernatural elements, but what was there set it up nicely for the next book. I liked that the POV’s changed and it helped to see different perspectives. I did find Ruby a bit of a whiny person at times, but I guess young love can knock a person in different ways. The story progressed quite quickly from love to the next steps at an early age, which I wasn’t really expecting, but a good read for a first novel!
This book was quite a disappointment. It should, first of all, be classified as a romance. The paranormal elements are meaningless for the story line and are only used to ruin the ending. I dislike the current trend which treats readers like babies, unable to handle anything but the cheesiest cotton-candy fluff endings. This book could have been an entertaining read if it had ended on the penultimate chapter. The addition is garbage and adds nothing at all to the story. Secondly, from around the second third of the novel, more and more errors appear in the writing, becoming unbearable around three quarters of the way through. I almost put the book down, not wanting to continue because of them. It is poor form to produce a book of less than the highest quality because it brings down indie authors as a whole, affecting fantastic authors by giving self-publishing a bad name. Finally, the characterization was poor, attention to detail was lacking and the blasé acceptance and perpetuation of chauvinism by accepting the two male characters’ dating game without exploring this ethically dubious activity even remotely had me unimpressed at every turn. However, D.F. Jones deserves credit for being able to write racey sex scenes - if that's all you're looking for in a book.
Ruby's Choice is the first book in the Ditch Lane Diaries Collection. In this book, we learn the beginnings of where and how the girls first received their gifts. Ruby, the girl that the first book focuses on, has dreams of the future.
In this book we also meet Reed & Brent. Ruby is attracted to both of them, but discovers that Brent is being tormented by a demon. Can anything be done to help free Brent from his tormentor?
I enjoyed this book a great deal. It was set in the 1970s and the author did an excellent job of giving her tale a distinct 1970s feel. The slang used by the characters and other descriptions really made me feel like I was back in the 1970s that I had grown up in. The author really did an amazing job in setting the atmosphere for the series.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
Ruby, Anna and Sandy were seeking adventure, and they found it, in the most unlikeliest of places, a cave. It's a cave, Ruby and her brother, had discovered five years earlier. Ruby was told to never go into the cave, and she was about to find out why. Their adventure was to take them into the far reaches of the first cave, and into another cave. This second cave, had drawings on the wall of three people kneeling before a figure, carved into the stone. Only after leaving the caves, did the girls each discover a stone on their person. The stones had been transferred to them, without their knowledge. The message they received, when they found the stones, was they were not to discuss, with anyone, their findings until directed to, and they didn't - until many years later.
Ruby had grown up on Everglade Farms. It had been the home of her family for generations. And, although Ruby had grown up here, and spent every holiday here with family and friends, her time here was coming to an end. It was time to stretch her wings and move in with Anna and Sandy. Not long before Ruby was to leave she was working at the local drugstore, and in walks two of the hottest guys Ruby has ever laid her eyes on. These guys were so hot they sent her hormones fluttering, and she knew she was going to have to make sure she was prepared for anything because, as Ruby put it, one guy "dripped nothing but pure sin", and she has the hots for the other one. Then one day, at the pool, Ruby started getting strange vibes from the guys. It seemed as if the two boys were in cahoots with one another for her affection. It was as if there were in a contest. Something was definitely going on and Ruby didn't like it at all. She definitely knew they were both pursuing her. She just didn't know why. It's not as if she had been real popular with boys in the past, and she isn't a real beauty. No, she didn't like it at all, and it was time to figure out what they were up to, and put a stop to whatever they are up to. She was going to have to pitch a few winning balls of her own.
While a Ruby is thinking this out, one of the guys decides to put an end to the Tap It game, because he's really interested in Ruby. Now that Ruby's hell bent on finding out what's going on, nothing will stop her. She's never put up with guff from guys before, and she's not going to start now. This is when things start to get real interesting. Remember the beginning of this story? I hope you do.
when I saw the storyline line of this book, I was very happy to learn I won a copy of it.
Who doesn´t love a love story, with teenagers enjoying a summer between friends and getting powers from a weird cave.
I was expecting a mix between the goonies, super 8 and a cheesy summer love story.
unfortunately it was not what I got from this book.
I thought at the beggining that Ruby and her friends were much more younger than they really are, seeing that she has a very childich behaviour, doesn´t hesitate to manipulate and the poor guys around her. I really didn´t like her.
at the begenning of the boom the author make a big deal of the cave, of how they get their powers, but then we don´t see anything more happening on that subjet-
all the great things that could have happened have been squizzed in 2 pages at the end of the book.
The end twist could hahe been great as well if the book finished on that, instead of repeating the party and shwing how shallow both protagonists are.
Every time i think of this book i feel frustruated of all the adventures those girls could have had.
This is the first book by DF Jones. It can be hit or miss when reading a new author and this was a hit. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because the flow of the book was sometimes a little choppy. What was excellent about the book was the character development and situational development. I was immersed in the 70's in Tennessee. I could feel the heat of the summer days and nights. Emotionally I was taken back to my own growing up years as a young nineteen year-old. Where I spent my weekends in the clubs and discos of San Francisco, in Ruby's Choice, Ruby and her two best friends spend the hot summer nights in Ditch Lane.
The paranormal element could have been developed a little more, for my taste. I enjoy a strong paranormal theme in my stories and Ruby's Choice read like a straight contemporary romance for the bulk of the book. Of course there were some surprising paranormal plot twists included that I won't go into here lest I spoil the surprise. DF Jones has real talent. She is a strong story teller with a clear voice. If you want to time travel back to the 70's Ditch Lane is the place to be.
I've been asked to write an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone affiliated with this book. **May Contain Some Spoilers**
This is the first book I have read by this author and it definitely won't be the last. Ruby and her friends are gifted with special powers after there visit in a cave and Ruby can see the future. She has these dreams of life and death. She has dreams of an intense make out session with a hot guy, Reed, who plays on her brothers baseball team just before Reed and his friend Brent walk into her store. The boys start to fight over her and she is a bit confused until Brent explains the "Tap it" game to her. She decides to play along with their game. Reed claims he is not playing and watches as Ruby grows closer to Brent. Who will Ruby choose? Does Brent love her? Does she love Reed? I loved this book. The ending was awesome. The characters reality you into the story. I love Ruby. She loves to speak her mind and she is so much fun. I look forward to reading the next book.
I found this story to be well written and full of reminders of growing up in a much different time. The girls, Ruby Jane, Anna and Sandy, are so well developed that I felt like they could have been some of my friends. Even though I am a few years young than the girls in this book I remember so may things about going to school in the 70's. I recommend this book to any one who wants to relive some of their memories of when life was good and you did not need to lock your doors.
I was looking for a book to start off my summer break. I was recommended this book by someone I know. I bought the book, and I couldn't stop reading once I had started. I was hooked on the romance, and what the future could possibly hold for Ruby. It definitely was a perfect book filled with adventure and romance. I enjoyed Ruby's Choice, so much that I had to buy Anna's Way as well. If you haven't read The Ditch Lane Diaries yet then you are definitely missing out!
