When disgraced former cop Alexandra Morgan is shot saving the life of California's Lieutenant Governor, she doesn't expect to be caught in the middle of a deadly conspiracy, an FBI sting, an old rivalry ... and cold-blooded murder.
When the shooter gets away after Alex pursues him, she gives her statement to the police, but is skeptical that LG Travis Hart was the actual target. The lead detective—Alex’s ex-boyfriend—doesn’t buy her theory, but is willing to look into it. That satisfies her until District Attorney Matt Elliott shows up at her house and asks Alex to once again go undercover to stop a growing criminal enterprise that he claims is funding Hart’s campaign for Governor.
Alex is no stranger to working undercover—she’d been undercover for the FBI when her partner shot and nearly killed her eight months ago. To protect the investigation and the FBI’s informants, she left the force under a cloud of distrust and suspicion. But this time, she’s going in without back-up and without a badge. And this time, the shooter will aim to kill ...

Allison Brennan is one author who is skillful at creating stories that keep a really good balance between romance and suspense and her latest book, Aim to Kill is just that kind of story.
This book can be read as a stand alone although there are a lot of characters that appeared in previous books that you will recognize. Detective Selena Black, FBI agent Dean Hooper and even the main character, Sacramento County District Attorney Matt Elliott. This one of the things I enjoyed in this story.
This is a good, taut and fast paced story with twists and turns that slowly unfold, keeping you guessing until the end.
I must be honest and admit that the Lucy Kincaid short story at the end didn’t do it for me. I kept thinking….do I need to read this and is it necessary for me to get into the next book in this series!!
Love Allison’s writing. The impression you have of what the book is about in the first chapter is not at all what you get by the end. There are so many twists to the story that were slowly revealed until a surprise ending. I highly recommend this one. It also has quite of few characters that are from her older suspense books that make appearances.
Enjoyable read. I'll never be fond of novella length reads but this one has characters you want to get to know and a fairly involved plot. Good stuff. I do enjoy Allison Brennan novels. X
A new police heroin to marvel at. I'm finding Brennan's stories hard to put down, and impossible not running to the next issue. Another new series to follow.
6/28/2024 ~ A solid mystery/romance from Brennan set in the same world as the Lucy Kincaid/Sean Rogan books. This is labeled as #3 in the River City Mysteries, but I've been unable to locate #1 & 2. I would enjoy reading more about Alexandrea Morgan.
In Aim to Kill, Brennan brings back a fan favorite character in Matt Elliott. Personally I’ve been waiting for his story since Megan got her own HEA with Jack Kincaid. Matt has met his match in Alexandra “Alex” Morgan, a former Sacramento cop. Matt has always been one of my favorite characters and I was very excited for him to get his HEA. That being said, this is really Alex’s story. After turning in her partner for soliciting an underage girl, Alex is trying to find a new path. It doesn’t help that she was informing on her partner to the FBI during the last year of her employment with the PD. The case she was working on rears its head as a gubernatorial candidate is almost murdered. With plenty of twists and turns and suspense to keep readers interested, this book is a great addition to the Brennan storybook. If you aren’t familiar with the characters, don’t worry, Brennan gives enough background that you can jump right in. Just be forewarned, once you take the leap you will want to go glom all of her backlist.
This is my tenth Allison Brennan novel and I picked up this stand-alone when I finished the third trilogy on my way to the Lucy Kincaide books. But to my surprise, even though it is a stand-alone (as are most of the ones in the trilogies), there was a character that was mentioned in one of the books I had just finished. I love that - reading about familiar characters while getting to meet new ones.
This book was intriguing and suspenseful. I had my suspicions as far as who the bad guy was and I was right but it was still a fun ride to get there. All of Ms. Brennan's characters are well-developed and the lead two in this book were great. I also appreciate, as an older reader, that the main characters are not all 21 but in their thirties and forties. Excellent book and now I get to go back to my next and last trilogy before I get to start the Lucy books.
Matt and Alex. Both fighting for good and both attracted to each other. But, they met while Alex was undercover and when things went south, Alex was injured and had to lose everything to maintain cover. She is trying to fix her life when the shooting happens and she finds herself back working with Matt and the FBI. Dean is back so we have several return character with Matt and Dean who I love! The case is intriguing with police corruption, Russian ties, prostitution, murder and more. The romance angle is played up more in this story than the first two of the series, but it is also fitting and works well with the storyline. The ending is not surprising, but it still is a satisfying ending and great way to tie up the questions of this case!
So I'd actually bought the Sweet Dreams box set months ago, but ebooks tend to get pushed down the TBR pile (sorry, but they just don't compare to a real book). It wasn't until Allison Brennan shared the links to this on her Facebook page that I realised I had Matt Elliott's story sitting here all along....and I hadn't read it yet. Opps. My bad!
So yeah. Read it in one day. Loved it. It was so good to see Matt finally get his story, and visits from old favourites. I love how Brennan does weave her past characters into new stories. It really is like catching up with an old friend!
This book started out well and had great potential. Then it was hacked to death in the final chapters. The book ended in 3-4 pages, that were a summary of what should have been the last third of the book. Then after the book is completed, a brief novella of the Lucy Kincaid series is crammed in. Strongly recommend not spending money on this book, extremely disappointing!!!
I enjoyed the book, I found it hard to put down. The pace was good and I really liked Morgan's character, she was tenacious and believable. The 'support' characters helped bring all the situations to life. I'm hoping there will be a follow up for Alex Morgan in the future, but for now I will try one of her other series. I normally read authors such as JD Robb and Baldacci and was glad to have tried a new author (to me).
This is a good suspense book. The characters are in other books by Allison Brennan which makes me want to read the other ones just to see where some of the characters come from. A good, quick read =)
Throwing in the towel on this one. Allison Brennan is one of my favorite authors (seriously, I count down the days between Max Revere and Lucy Kincaid releases!) but I just couldn't get in to this. I'll pick it back up eventually, but stopping for now.
Very intriguing and an inner look at the “blue wall” especially if one of the good ole boys is threatened. You can really feel for the characters can’t wait to read another book by the author.
A really enjoyable story, It was great to catch up with characters from previous Allison Brennan books, and the story had me gripped from beginning to end.
