Jimmy McSwain returns to help his sister's boyfriend fight a murder charge--and finds he may just have a lead on a cold case.

Hell's Kitchen private investigator Jimmy McSwain returns in a twisting tale of past sins and present-day vengeance.

Jimmy McSwain isn't thrilled about taking a case for free but when his sister fears her boyfriend, Rocky, is cheating on her, he has no choice. But the case takes a deadly turn when Rocky is standing over the body of a man he was just seen kissing, and he's holding the gun. He begs Jimmy to prove his innocence.

Meanwhile, as a sweltering heat wave claims New York City, a gunman with a thirst for blood is targeting Manhattan deli owners and has already claimed two victims. Jimmy knows a thing or two about those, fourteen years ago his father was killed outside a deli, and it's possible today's killer could be linked to that unsolved murder, one that continues to haunt Jimmy.

Enlisting the aid of sexy NYPD Captain Francis X. Frisano, Jimmy finds himself torn between the two cases, as well as the heat simmering between himself and the hot cop. Suddenly a quiet summer has erupted into a full-blown crime wave.

I'm not going to lie, while this is an entertaining story, with a solid mystery and likable main character, it's absolutely Joel Leslie's narration that made this a winner for me.

I liked the mystery element, there was even a little romance (though it's not a focus of the story but it's integrated well), and Jimmy and his family were a delight.

I just simply loved Leslie's narration.

My only complaint with the story itself is that it tends to be filled with a little too much purple prose at times, but Leslie absolutely makes it work.

So I feel like this is one of those times where the story was absolutely elevated by the narration. Which, for me, just proves that the right voice talent can make or break your audiobook.

Note: I haven't read the first story, but I had zero issue or problem following along - so no problems handling this as a standalone.

If you're looking for an entertaining mystery with wonderful narration I'd absolutely steer you towards Crime Wave.

This is the 2nd book in the Jimmy McSwain series and it is fast becoming one of my favorite mystery series. In this gem of a mystery, we find our intrepid PI doing a favor for his younger sister by seeing if her boyfriend is cheating on her.Ya see Rocky ( yep, that's his real name) canceled his date with Meaghan, and she doesn't buy the excuse he's not feeling well.As far as Jimmy is concerned, Rocky is a real loser, he just got out of jail for pushing drugs, and has a rap sheet as long as his arm, but being the big brother that he is, of course he will tail the bum for his little sister. The only thing is, that Meaghan has decided to tag along to catch lover boy in the act, and as the June heat beats down in his unaircondition car, all Jim can think of is drinking a cold brewskie with that hot Captain Frisano ( he met him in the first book) . Thank goodness for his mom calling wondering where Meaghan is ( mom is the head usher at a theater) and she is forced to leave for work. With promises that he will stay and find out what is going on with Rocky, Jimmy remains outside of the apartment where the Italian stallion has gone. A little while later, Rocky comes out hand in hand with his secret love. The secret love happens to be an older black man who Rocky has the look of love and PDA. Jimmy follows the love struck duo in a bar.Let's just say the events that happen next, lead Rocky needing Jimmy's expertise in more ways than one...Also on Jimmy' s radar is a series of deadly deli robberies that seem similar to the murder of his beloved father 15 years ago. Also, in his personal life, Jimmy and the devilishly hot and closeted Captain Frisano have a date to go on. Will Jimmy be able to help Rocky? Are the deli robberies somehow related to the murder of his father? What is with Jimmy's attraction and desire for the closeted Captain? You need to read this wonderful mystery to find the answers to these questions. It's indeed a good read!

Crime Wave is the second Jimmy McSwain Files Book, but it can easily be read/listened to as a standalone.

Crime Wave is a thoroughly entertaining story full of murder, mystery and intrigue. It's like an episode of a fine vintage TV crime show with the "A" storyline being Jimmy trying to solve a murder and free an innocent man, the "B" plot is the series of robberies that are disturbingly to the robbery 15 years that led to Jimmy's father's murder, and a "C" storyline is Jimmy and sexy NYPD Captain Francis X. Frisano.

Joel Leslie's narration is top-notch and really makes this entertaining story much better. I liked his assortment of voices and inflections and the narration did a good job of keeping the story afloat at times when I felt the flow of the story was a bit too wordy and excessively descriptive. 5 stars for Joel Leslie's narration and 4 stars overall.

4.5 star review by The Blogger Girls.

The story of Jimmy McSwain continues in this book, which picks up not long after Hidden Identity ended. The hunt for his father’s killer is always present, but he works to solve some other cases in the meantime. This time around, he is sort of thrown into a case when on a stakeout for his sister who believes her boyfriend is cheating, he ends up at the scene of a crime where nothing is cut and dry. The cops have their suspect, but Jimmy believes he is innocent, having been there at the time of the incident. He must now find a way to prove them wrong and free a seemingly innocent man. At the same time, there are other shootings going on that Jimmy believes mirror his own father’s and he tries desperately to connect the dots.

Jimmy has totally grown on me. I really love his quick wit and snappy comebacks, his total sexiness and even his vulnerability. All of this shines through in his work and his play, which, as was alluded to in the first book, involves the uber sexy Capt. Frisano. Unfortunately, it seems these two have no chance at anything beyond their hot hookups, which is a shame, but totally believable. This is a story that seems more about Jimmy and his mystery solving and not so much into his finding love and romance. With that being said, there is still some hot sex that never left me feeling like something was missing. Yes, I’d like to see Jimmy find someone to be happy with, but the way this story reads, I was content to wait it out and see what comes next. With things cooling down with Capt. Frisano, and the upcoming return of Jimmy’s ex (the only other guy besides Capt. Frisano to really get to Jimmy), the next installment should be quite interesting.

This story takes place in NYC, where Jimmy lives. If you are at all familiar with the area, you’ll find it fun to follow Jimmy’s footsteps as he makes his way around the City looking for clues, etc. It will difficult not to be on the lookout for the Dress-Up Club and Paddy’s Pub the next time I’m there and wishing I could run into Jimmy McSwain.

If you want a really enjoyable gripping whodunit mystery, be sure to give this series a try. It’s a fast-reading tale that moves along at a great pace, with colorful characters and interesting twists. I’m definitely a fan and am really looking forward to the next one.

This is the second book in a series and I had not read book one but I found that this was fine as a standalone. As the blurb states, Jimmy is a private detective who is helping his sister out as a favor. This leads to him witnessing the tail end of a murder that his sister’s boyfriend is accused of committing. Jimmy doesn’t really want to get involved but he feels bad for Rocky who is devastated over the murder and swears he is innocent. Jimmy ends up investigating the murder and finds himself in the middle of a complicated crime.

In addition to this plot there is also a side plot of Jimmy trying to find out who killed his father when he was a teenager. Some events happen that lead Jimmy to believe he is close to getting some answers.

There is a bit of romance in this between Jimmy and a police Captain that he works with. It appeared there had been some attraction between them in the previous book but they get together for the first time in this book. This was my least favorite part of the story. I didn’t care much for Francis and I didn’t feel any chemistry between the two men. It was more telling me how they felt than showing me.

I enjoyed the overall plot of the book and I liked the murder mystery that involved Rocky. I thought that was done well and had a few interesting twists. The writing style did not completely work for me though. There were passages that felt too wordy and there were sections, especially when the two men were together, that were filled with purple prose. I think that also led me to dislike the romance between the two.

This audio was narrated by Joel Leslie. I thought he did a good job on the narration. His voice for Jimmy was well done as were the side characters. There were parts that bothered me but those weren’t really the narrator’s fault. He was simply reading the words the author wrote. Even knowing that I still found the purple prose parts annoying and had to remind myself it wasn’t the narration that was bugging me but the text.

Overall this was an average read/audio. I didn’t love it but I did like it well enough that I will probably try the next book in the series at some point.

Audiobook review

4,5 stars

We are back in New York catching up with Jimmy McSwain. This time things are more personal, on many levels. We get to know more about Jimmy, about his family and the people around him. Just like with the first book I love how it’s all gradual, the getting to know all the players takes time and effort, and at the end there are still many more layers to uncover.

There are more romantic undertones to this book compared to the first one, there is a love interest for one, and some tentative steps are taking towards something. I wouldn’t go as far as call it a romance, but it’s there and there are prospects for something more. I would say this book is mostly about family. Getting to know Jimmy’s, past and present. And it’s for his family, his sister, that he gets involved with this latest case – trying to prove the innocence of his sister’s ex-boyfriend.

I’m falling hard for Jimmy. His tough as nails and vulnerable at the same time. He’s also stubborn as a mule and will do anything and everything to solve his dad’s case, not matter what obstacles he has to overcome. He has the same give for his family, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for them. His fierceness and determination is moving.

Joel Leslie once again brought it all to the table. He brought the characters and the story to life. I don’t know, but he has this innate feel of the character and place and he portrays it to the listener and transports the listener to New York walking alongside Jimmy.

This series of books have good mysteries, usually 2 at a time. The current modern day one and the case Jimmy still works on , that of his father's death.
In this book, Jimmy investigates the death of a man who is linked to his sister's boyfriend and a childhood friend. Interesting way the mystery is solved.

This is a great series with so many twists and turns that your head spins. I like the way that there is always a stop at the Dress-Up Club. The McSwain family dynamics never cease to amaze me and make me chuckle. I'm not a fan of Frisano or his cavalier attitude.

Jimmy McSwain is fast becoming my favorite private detective. He's called upon to help his sister's boyfriend beat a murder rap. Little does he know that this case and the murder of his father will become more entangled before it is all over.

I am crazy about this series, from the descriptions of New York and Broadway to Jimmy's family and all that falls in-between. Jimmy's desire to solve his father's death is paramount to all the other actions that surround him. Complex and enjoyable characters permeate every page. This is an amazing series.

Jimmy McSwain is back ... this time he deals with a case that is closed to home (his sister's boyfriend is accused of murder) and another case that reminds him of his father's murder fifteen years previously. In between, Captain Francis X. Frisano of the NYPD is also making his move towards Jimmy.

I thought this was an enjoyable mystery with gay protagonist. I liked it, although at times I thought Jimmy has too much of internal monologue when it comes to relationship as well as his father's murder that keeps haunting him. Oh, and I also thought that the story was getting closer to the ... "every suspects/victims are gay trope" that I commonly found in MM mystery. Does a gay P.I. only take cases with LGBTQ clients? Just wondering.

Anyway, I definitely will read the next books. Might not be my 4-stars material as of now but still likable for me. I like having an MM-mystery series to follow.

***Audiobook***Narrated by Joel Leslie ***4.5 stars!! Why aren't more people reading this series??

It's very well written, the characters are likeable, the mystery is intriguing, and the narration (if you go the audiobook route) is fantastic.

Crime Wave finds our favorite PI, Jimmy McSwain, tailing his sister Meaghan's boyfriend because she thinks he's cheating on her. What Jimmy uncovers turns out to be a whole lot more complicated than a cheating boyfriend.

I really enjoyed this one. We get to know Jimmy's family better and we get to see more of NYPD Captain Francis X. Frisano. I'll be curious to see where that relationship goes in book #3 since it sounds like Jimmy's ex will be back in town soon.

My only complaint is that Stage Fright isn't already available in audiobook. You can bet I'll be watching for it on Audible!

Note: This audiobook was provided to me through Hearts on Fire Reviews in exchange for an impartial review.

These Jimmy McSwain mysteries are starting to hook me pretty darn good. They are heavy on the mystery, and though Jimmy dabbles in relationships with other men, or at least in starting them, they are not romance novels. And strangely, though not something I thought I’d like, I do indeed enjoy just about every minute of the books I’ve read so far in this series. Granted, in large part, that may be due to the outstanding narration of Joel Leslie, who happens to be my personal favorite narrator.
They are written and narrated like the old black-and-white TV shows of yesteryear. I can almost hear the voice in my head saying “There are eight million stories in the Naked City” as I listen to the narrative segments of these books.

In this story, there’s a lot going on, and yet the author gives plenty of time for each plot vignette to play out, often overlapping the next one, or circling back to a key issue. It’s never dull or boring—always with one more twist right around the corner as Jimmy gets involved in solving a murder allegedly committed by a childhood friend—his sister’s former boyfriend.

He also finally lands in bed with Captain Francis X. Frisano, the man with whom he had a quick backroom session in the last book. The tall, masculine, hairy, Italian cop might ride Jimmy about getting involved with his case, but does a better job riding him when they get to spend a night together. Sorry, I couldn’t resist saying that! But as Jimmy seeks answers in his case, a possibly related case keeps popping up to distract him—the hunt for the murderer of his father, who was killed over fifteen years before in front of a deli that was being robbed. The new rash of deli murders seems to point to a man who worked on the force with his dad at the time, a man who is now on the wrong side of the law.

Full of plot twists, highly interesting, a pretty sizzling sex scene, a satisfying conclusion, and narrated by Joel Leslie. What more could I want? I highly recommend this one for hours of exciting listening enjoyment.

Jimmy McSwain is still working to solve the “Forever Haunt”, the murder of his father, Joseph McSwain, when he finds himself with a new client—his sister, Meaghan. They’re on a stakeout, watching Meaghan’s boyfriend, Rocky, because she’s suspects that Rocky is cheating on her. It isn’t like Rocky hasn’t been in trouble before, but this time cheating turns to murder, and Jimmy finds himself deep in this case.

Jimmy suspects a former cop, Rashad Assan, of Joseph’s murder and begins collaborating with Captain Francis X. Frisano of the NYPD. Jimmy feels that if he can find Assan and talk with him, maybe there will be something that can clear up his father’s murder. But when he gets close to finding Assan, the one man he thought he could trust takes that away from him.

The Jimmy McSwain Files is a smartly written detective series; the plots are genius and get better with each new installment. Jimmy always has more than one iron in the fire, and he handles himself smoothly. Crime Wave is an emotional story on so many different levels, and Jimmy has so many obstacles to overcome. In trying to solve his father’s murder, he has to deal with the NYPD not only hating that he’s a P.I. but also that he’s gay. To add to that, there is also something wrong going on with the NYPD. Because of my suspicions about Frisano, who’s not out, and Jimmy, who doesn’t hide his sexuality, I just didn’t know if this was a healthy situation. This story was somewhat of a heartbreaker; I thought Jimmy may have found someone he could have a relationship with, but with the loss of trust and truth, the beginning ends fast.

The family dynamics, with all the warmth and emotions, jumps off the pages. I liked the solidness of all the characters as well as the connection Jimmy has with his father’s old partner, Ralphie Henderson, who always gives solid advice. I’m absolutely hooked on the Jimmy McSwain Files.

A fine follow-up to the first novel in the series; Crime Wave (The Jimmy McSwain Files Book, #2) by Adam Carpenter . A nicely paced, well-crafted mystery featuring strong motivations for actions committed; enduring love. Looking forward to reading the next in the series. For audiobook lovers, Joel Leslie is incredible performing this awesome novel; his spot-on voice inflections helped to make the characters come alive with the descriptions, action and words written by Carpenter.

2022 Review
I am enjoying revisiting this character, Jimmy McSwain. Since the library has a lot (if not all) of the series in audio I will have the chance to keep going with this series. Hopefully it keeps staying interesting.

2017 Review
I was provided a complimentary copy of the audio in exchange for an honest review.

I am becoming obsessed with this series! I was extremely fortunate to be provided a complimentary audio copy of Book 1 Hidden Identity, and it was really, really good! Book 1 wasn't a romance; it focused on the mystery aspect but there was romance (sex) in it. Crime Wave, which is book 2, hints that Jimmy McSwain and "sexy NYPD Captain Francis X. Frisano" have a romance. They certainly have a spark of something. But Jimmy has sworn to never fall for a cop, and Frank can't be a publically out gay man and still fulfill his cop career dreams.

I have to say that Joel Leslie's narration was PERFECT!! He is able to give the characters their own voice and I knew when it was Jimmy speaking, when it was Frank speaking, or when it was "Terry Cloth" speaking. ;) I particularly thought Joel's ability to express the characters emotions - be those anger, fear or lust - was simply amazing. I am still new to the audio world and I've not come across any other narrators who put so much emotion into the written word.

I felt these characters come alive, and when Jimmy becomes involved in yet another murder, I was rooting for him to solve it and to also find love.

Crime Wave is very different from Hidden Identity. I will admit that I had figured out who the killer was, but I had the motive and everything else related to the murder case completely wrong. I was surprised, which is always cool in a mystery. This one has a twist I really didn't see coming.

Jimmy is begged by his sister to spy on her boyfriend, Rocky, because she thinks he's cheating on her. He is, Jimmy finds this out, but it's not with a woman; he's with a man - and is in fact in love with this other man. But as Jimmy is working his case, Rocky's lover is killed and Rocky arrested for it. Jimmy knows Rocky didn't kill his lover and is determined to prove it. However, it's not just this case that Jimmy wants to solve. There have been a string of deli robberies/murders that have hit the city, and Jimmy is believes that the person responsible is VERY likely to be the same person who killed his father 15 years ago.

With the help of Captain Francis X. Frisano, Jimmy is able to investigate both cases. There is the added complication of Jimmy and Frank sleeping together. They were totally HOT together!!!! ;) But it's super complicated because Frank is a police captain and wants to be commissioner some day. Well, that won't happen if he's an out gay man, so Frank tells Jimmy the blunt truth. It's not like Jimmy is surprised; he knew this 100% already. And it's not as if Jimmy wants to date a cop, either. Nope, he's sworn he would never date a cop, and certainly never fall in love with one. But their attraction to one another is too much for them to resist and they find themselves coming together.

I highly recommend this series and can't wait for the rest of the series to be on audio. I am really becoming addicted to this new method of "reading." :-D I love Jimmy's family and can't wait to see what comes up next!!! 4.5 stars (because Jimmy's heart of kind of broken).

The second Jimmy McSwain murder mystery builds on the momentum of the first, giving us a healthy amount of character development on top of the current pair of mysteries Jimmy finds himself investigating.
Jimmy is slowly recovering from the ending of the relationship introduced in the first book and still trying to decipher what his crush on Captain Frisano means for his future. And of course, he is still motivated by the unsolved murder of his police officer father fourteen years earlier. All of this informs and influences every decision Jimmy makes throughout the book, but I think Carpenter does a good enough job layering all of that background into this book that even if you missed the previous volume, you won’t be lost or feel like you’re missing vital information. That’s a facet of mystery series fiction that I am particularly fond of: the ability to read the books out of order if you so choose.
Both of the mysteries/crimes Jimmy gets involved in this time are interesting and would be enough to fill a book on their own, and I was worried at the start that perhaps the author was trying to do too much in one book. Carpenter balances the two main plot threads with great dexterity considering how little they overlap; neither one overwhelms or is overwhelmed by the other. The pacing of the book is damned near perfect in that regard.
The mystery of Jimmy’s father’s death (a closed case to the cops but not to Jimmy) is the main “background mythology” of the series. I was surprised to see the author take such a risk this early in the series: most series spool out the mythology very slowly, especially on television crime/mystery shows. To his credit, Carpenter walks that fine line better than many; the connection of Jimmy’s father to the current deli crimes being neither a misleading tease nor a full reveal, but rather somewhere satisfyingly in the middle. (And that’s the most I can say about that without giving major spoilers.)
The development of the supporting cast continues capably as well. We get more of a sense of Jimmy’s older and younger sisters, especially, which makes sense given the family involvement in one of the two cases. We also get more of a look at Jimmy’s father’s former partner and of course some emotional developments on the relationship between Jimmy and Captain Frisano. All of this supporting character work melds seamlessly with the main plots, another strong point of the book.
Part classic noir and part modern procedural, with a dollop of erotic thriller mixed in for good measure; the blend works very well for this character and this setting. I’m looking forward to the next Jimmy McSwain file.

I'm as frustrated as Jimmy -
I'm liking this series more, and will go straight to book 3 I think!
I like the investigations - a bit of local interest to Jimmy's family, some queries being put on supporting characters, the truth behind the killing of Joey gets a bit clearer and nearer only to be snatched away again, and Rocky's case thows up surprises and reveals and moral dilemma's all over the place.
Jimmy and Frank continue to develop their relationship but it is a big dipper - the build up, the highs in the motel and then the massive drop to rock bottom again from Jimmy. Do want to hear Frank's side but can totally get behind Jimmy's reaction.

Jimmy's new case to help his childhood friend help out, especially of being convicted for a murder was interesting and emotionally full. I loved listening to this book and will continue on with this series. Great work by Adam Carpenter.

Jimmy's story continues. In Crime Wave Jimmy starts to suspect that his father killer isn't far. Ending was tragic for Jimmy, but then it always happens that way. When you want something too much it usually vanishes like a wind. I was satisfied about Jimmy's slowly developing romance with hot Captain Frisano. I'm looking forward to the next instalment. Narration by Joel Leslie was excellent.

Once again this is not a romance. Glad to be rid of Barry. But I was looking forward to Jimmy and Captain Francis X. Frisano.
They do hook up. But it's not a relationship yet. I was a little peeved, when IN bed he told him they couldn't be public. Captain Francis is the closet and staying there. I don't know that I'm ready to give up on the possibility of the hot Captain being the love interest going forward or not. Time will tell. I don't mind there being a clear couple. This is the story of Jimmies life, and his hunt for his father. Any possible romances thrown in are just a bonus.

Jimmy's sister thinks her boyfriend is cheating on her and asks Jimmy for help. Not only is he cheating, but he's in a pickle, because his lover is murdered and he's the suspect. Easy to see why, when Jimmy finds him standing over the body with the weapon.
He's still very much working on the case of his murdered father also. Just when you think all his leads have come to an end, he finds a new little tidbit.

I'm sure it won't take me long to move onto book 3.

The heatwave in NYC is causing a crime wave and it’s a headache for PI Jimmy McSwain. When Jimmy’s sister cajoles him into tailing her boyfriend, Rocky, whom she suspects of cheating, Jimmy can’t foresee the chaos and death ahead. Meanwhile, a disgruntled ex-cop, who may have links to JImmy’s father’s death, is robbing and shooting people in delis across NYC and Jimmy needs answers before it’s too late. Once again, Joseph Pittman (writing under the Adam Carpenter pen name) has written a fast-paced, absorbing investigative murder-mystery with a sympathetic, but not dysfunctional, main character. I really like Jimmy, he’s flawed yet decent and therefore entirely human. I loved the structure of these books: there’s always two cases, one a high-octane mystery, the other pertaining to the intriguing conspiracy surrounding the murder of Jimmy’s dad - and they’re always both so satisfying! Voice artist Joel Leslie skilfully trots out his wide variety of NY accents as only he can.

A very good story, with a deep sense of melancholy permeating it. Past and present are mixed in the cases that are being worked here and into the tentative relationship between Jimmy and closeted NYPD Captain Francis X. Frisano. Family and friendship, community and love, all mixed up in a really well-written story.

It's read by Joel Leslie, and... well... Joel Leslie :(

I need to get the third book in this series ASAP :)

Loved this second book in the series and Joel Leslies’s narration.

The mystery here is enjoyably twisty with good red herrings. Plus we get more involved in Jimmy’s number one case, that of his fathers murder 15 years prior. More clues get dropped though they make things even more confusing.

I love this series, can’t figure out why it’s not available in ebook as well as audio and paperback, but will keep bingeing the audiobooks.

I enjoyed this book even more than the first one. Plenty of twists and turns in the cases Jimmy is working. His love life seems equally twisty. I enjoyed getting to know Jimmy's family and the rest of the cast of characters. Even the villains are interesting.

The pacing of the story and the crime noir feel are a good reason to listen to this book. Joel Leslie's narration is nicely performed, and I have already started on the next book.

Well.. i liked the first one.. so im gone with the second.

It was good.. no doubt.. but in long phases just boring.

To much blabla blah.. less action. No, i dont mean the sexplay (why every gaybook needs to be filled with detailed sexscenes its beyond me)

Quite frankly the ending made no sense. Why does he suddenly know who the culprit is ? Why would the rich man follow him to the bar willingly?

2 time read

Story plot is complex and pulling, we even get a romance that is very slowly integrated in the plot.
It was a good reading material.

1 - time read

Once again, I am happy to write a satisfying reading review.

First I will say, that I was very satisfied with the second book of " Jimmy McSwain Files" series. Why?

Main character Jimmy is still cool as ever. Story plot on it own is active that leads readers true mysterious chase of murder and justice. So what's not to like!

Let's continue with the next one.
