Calamity has forced our government to manufacture genetically altered humans. Creations. Mortals have refused to serve and protect, no longer willing to put their lives on the line for our world. These ‘Creations’ were designed to manage and enforce order among citizens. Creations don’t know fear or express pain. Their sole function is to fight the enemy and live to battle again.

Orphans Kylie Alexander and her twin brother, Lukahn, were born for this purpose. Dedicating their lives to sharpening their deadly skills and forfeiting the chance of love and freedom, they ready themselves for Separation, the deadly rite of passage where the oldest teens are drafted into the final preparation for war.

When Ky and Luke are shipped off to Separation three months early, questions begin to arise. Who is the real enemy? What is really happening beyond the fractured sanctuary of the training compound? What are they actually fighting for?

Humans and Creations alike have become allies when a plague of the living dead becomes the number one hazard. Strategies change as the twins discover they may not be the saviors of humankind after all.
They may be the enemy of the people.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Peiri Ann, and NetGalley.)

This book was confusing.

I struggled a bit with Kylie, because although she was supposed to be a tough fighter, she acted like a total cry baby at times – she needed to sleep with her brother because of the nasty bad dreams, she got all confused because two guys liked her, and generally didn’t live up to the whole ‘tough girl’ persona that at times she tried to put on. As for Luke (her brother) what a total hypocrite he was! Not to mention how overprotective he was of Kylie. He’s allowed to hook up with random girls, but she’s not even allowed to look at a boy? Really?!

Anyway, as for the storyline, it totally lost me. There were all these words thrown in that weren’t explained, I had absolutely no idea what the war was about, what the heck separation was or why it was needed, why these fighters even had to be twins? And the list goes on. I spent the whole book just wondering when things were going to be explained, and then we got a few pages tacked on the end with an explanation as to how this all started! Talk about too late!

There was some romance in this, and it was in the form of a triangle. I didn’t quite get why Kylie kissed Cory if she then claimed to not like him, and while I did prefer Marc, he was also irritating and overprotective at points too.

The ending to this was a cliff-hanger, but I’m not sure I’d want to read another book in this series.

Not bad but this is not catching my attention. I keep drifting off in the middle of a sentence and I can't bring myself to get involved in the story again.

There is a lot of telling and very little showing.

(I received a copy from Netgalley, In exchange for an honest review.)

I didn't love any of the characters in this, but they were alright.

This started out okay, but after a while I lost interest unfortunately. There wasn't anything awfully wrong with it, it just couldn't hold my attention all that well.

Overall, An okay read.

RATING: 3.5 STARS

**This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review**

I enjoyed this story, especially considering sci-fi isn't really my genre. I believe that this is the first book that I've ever read by Peiri Ann and I am totally no opposed to reading more from her.

CREATED follows genetically altered twins, Lukahn and Kylie, who were designed to be weapons and protectors of the new government and society that was created after the war. Their only purpose is the fight and protect. Nothing more. Fear is not an option.

Luke and Ky, as they are called throughout the story, are orphaned at a young age and so they dedicate themselves to truly preparing and honing in on their skills. They soon become the best of the best on their recruiting cohort. But suddenly, their shipped off to their draft (final prep) for war earlier than anticipated, which leaves a lot of questions unanswered for the two. Which then begs the question of who are they to trust and do they fully understand all that is going on with the war?

Through the story, the twins are learning about what it feels to have other feelings and situations that might become a distraction to their main mission of just being weapons. They meet people and other creations that cause a bit of a snag in their original plan. And they learn how to adapt and deal with being more than just weapons.

For the most part, I had a great time with this book. Because it's sci-fi, it always takes me a bit longer to fully immerse myself in to the genre because there's a lot more visualization involved. There are terms and images that i have to grasp. I have to envision this world that is quite frankly, so unlike my own. I can never do that in the first few chapters.

Ironically, though, once I got into the world, I found myself thinking that this story felt a lot like a contemporary sci-fi story. Or at least a bit more on the mild side of sci-fi. Think The Walking Dead. Zombies in a contemporary world. THAT'S how I felt about this book. I felt like there were just creatures existing in my realistic world. And that's not a bad thing, it's just not what I was expecting.

The characters of Luke and Ky were fascinating enough, but also very frustrating. While Ky was not a weak and dependent female by any means. She was definitely a frustrating character. She was very naive to a lot of what was going on around her, while Luke had all of the answers. And the reasoning behind that didn't seem like more than just him know more than her just because. I couldn't really find a reasonable or satisfying understanding of why he kept so much from her.

There was a lot of hypocrisy and stereotypical behavior that rubbed me the wrong way. But then again, it IS a different world, so I can't expect things to be normal. But it upset me more times than it didn't, which again, goes to the pro side of how effective the writing in this book was.

I can't say that I saw much development on the part of Luke, but something tells me that this was meant to be Ky's journey. And if that was the case, then Peiri Ann did an awesome job with her development. The cast of supporting characters from Cory to Marc to Collins really played a role in the progression of Ky's personality and character development.

I did feel that the plot progression, at times, was overpowered by the romantic aspects of the book. To the point where I would sometimes forget that this was primarily about twins on a mission, versus twins having an emotional epiphany. But that honestly could have been just me favoring the romance because I'm not a sci-fi fanatic. But I DO think that this was more of a character-driven sci-fi book, as opposed to a world-driven one.

Overall, while I didn't fall in love with this story as much as I wanted to, I did appreciate it. Especially for not being a Sci-Fi fan. I think the fact that I was intrigued enough to keep reading says enough of how well the story provided enough lure.

Good solid effort for Peiri Ann. She got me to appreciate a sci-fi novel!

I hated this book! And I don’t say that lightly. It had no direction, no plot and the romance aspect was awkward and uninteresting. It was really disappointing because there was so much potential for a great story.

So they are twins, all twins at a certain age become weapons for a war. And then you know what happens? Nothing! Yeah they train hard and fight but we get no closure on what they are really fighting. Zombies? Aliens? Both? Each other? Who is the real enemy here? It’s never made clear. It had too much double crossing and not enough clarification. I suspect this was done on purpose to be intriguing but all it did was confuse the heck outta me.

The romance was just terrible bad folks. They kept waffling back and forth on if they wanted to continue a physical relationship as apparently it is frowned upon in combat, why we never really find out. It got old after a while, and the third wheel guy was just plain unnecessary. Not to mention the double standard where Lukhan was allowed to get physical but Kylie was given shit about it. Not only does this make me care less about Lukhan, this particular point of contention in the book had no purpose, it did not move the story along. It just was. There is a lot of these little things in the book, just thrown in but not really interweaving to form a cohesive story.

Lukhan was overbearing and just plain mean. He had no personality and was very hard to relate to. Kylie was too innocent and immature for this world where violence was supposed to be normal. She was constantly failing at her role as team lead making it hard for me to see how she deserved to even be in that position. The characters needed so much more fleshing out and dear god this book needed alpha, beta and maybe two to three editors. It was just all over the place with no closure to the main plot.

First things first: I received an ARC through NetGalley.

This is a tough one for me. I didn't really love it but I didn't really hate it either. I'm so confused!!!

I wish we didn't have to wait til the last chapter to actually find out what is going on with the world and how it came to all of this. I'm not saying it would have been better putting the 'The Beginning' chapter at the beginning. But a few bits in between the story would have been great.

The characters were really hard for me to get into. I don't know if it's about the whole they only live to fight and not have much else in life and not show any emotions or if it was something else. But I have to say that as soon as Kylie started to have actual feelings that I liked her much better.
Luke was just way too intense, I get the whole protecting his sister and all that, but I feel like he didn't give her enough space and was just all in her business all the time.
And don't even get me started on Cory. The way he always could in Kylie's personal space, made me feel really uncomfortable.
Marc and Sean. I really liked them over time.

Since I pretty much only had problems with the characters, let's focus on the the good parts. I think the writing was really great, even during the parts that really frustrated me. I also love the whole idea of the story and it's definitely something that I haven't read before. Of course there are a lot of books out there that talk about the world going to hell and how some people decide they wanna fix it, but overall it's a different approach to it.

Kylie & Luke are twins but they are part of the creation. Being Orphans they were raised by their aunt. But at age 18 they are part of the separation. Being on the grounds with others like them they train to kill zombies. What they don't realize is they are dangerous to the others.

Received this for an honest review. This was a awesome book.

***A DIGITAL COPY OF THE BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME BY NETGALLEY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***

***THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Actual Rating
: 2.5/5 stars

Cover: 4/5 stars

The cover is beautiful, even though I don't feel it matches the content of the book (what with the protagonist being a war machine and all.)

Plot: 2/5 stars

During the whole time I was reading the book I was frustrated at the fact that I didn't know anything about what a Vojin was, what need was there for the Separation and Creations, why there was a war etc. To be fair, the last chapter, "The Beginning", serves as explanation of all this, but it was, in my opinion, useless at that point. In my head, I had already tried to figure out the big details on my own (the Vojin is another planet or species, and they made the Creations to be war machines). Having the explanatory chapter at the end felt a bit irritating to say the least. I felt like the author was pulling my leg.

Another problem about the plot is that, - because of the lack of basic, preliminary information, - there isn't one. We only know the protagonists are "Creations" and are being sent away to fight a war, even though they are different from the others because they have a secret. 9% of the book is about training, when there actually is some. The other 1% is about shooting zombies' heads off (yes, zombies), while 90% of it is romance. I don't know what it is with YA books these days, but they always seems to HAVE to have 1. romance 2. love triangles. I am down for some kissy kissy scenes here and there, but NOT while the female protagonist is facing danger everywhere she turns but cannot, for the life of her, stop thinking about the guy that she's falling for but shouldn't. Stereotypical much? And this brings me to the characters...

Characters: 0.5/5 stars

I hated the female lead, Ky. I also hated her twin brother, Luke. To be honest, I didn't like anyone. Maybe I would have liked Marc, if he weren't so two-dimensional it hurt. I often say that I can like a book with an okay plot, so long as it has wonderful, three-dimensional characters. This book has none of those. I feel like Ky tries hard to be a good character, but fails. She's a perfectly stereotyped female character, driven by her feelings that cloud her reason, and at the mercy of every single male character out there, especially her twin brother. Frankly, every time Luke would tell Ky to stop doing this and that, I wanted to punch him so hard in the face and rip his tongue out. THEN I would have punched Ky in the stomach and would have told her to grow a uterus and tell him to shove it.

I appreciated that the author tried to give Ky a psychological depth by having her past haunt her, but, in light of the male characters bossing her around, that storyline was only another thing that irritated me.

Nothing to say about the other characters, they're either (male) extraordinary fighters who win at everything (Luke, Marc) or (female) irrational characters who want to get in Luke's pants (Collins and and all the other what's-their-names). Like I said, bi-dimensional.

A few examples of irritatingly sexist stuff:

Everyone laughs as Major grabs the table to keep from falling out of the chair. "You should really calm down, Luke," Major states coolly. "Your sister's cute, Men are going to try to chase her." He winks at me. (Loc 366, ch. 4)

I can handle relations without gaining feelings. And even if you could, I couldn't stand by and watch a guy just use you. - Luke to Ky (Loc. 976, ch. 12)

Girls get too attached. Though you don't have any affection for him, attraction is just as bad. You don't need to feed into that. Talk to him, fine. But do not take it past that. - Luke to Ky (Loc. 1007, ch. 12)

His hand comfortably cuffs into mine as we flee. I pretend I'm losing my grip on him, just so I can squeeze it tighter. He beats me to it, tightly grabbing my hand as he pulls me closer to him. His palm presses against mine and the contact warms my entire body. I've never felt anything like it. - Ky holding Marc's hand while they're running for their lives, from and possibly TO more danger. (Loc. 1413, ch. 15)

Writing style: 2.5/5 stars

Some of the sentences are very twisty (or incorrectly phrased), for example:

At that moment, I remember the girl from earlier eyes was colored..." (Loc. 591, ch. 7)

The topped needles are both, wide and long. (Loc. 765, ch. 10)

Like the man said who spit in that lady's face. (Loc 1373, ch. 15)

Rough, he looks in his suit. (Loc 1752, ch. 17)

I run into Marc coming out of Luke's room... - Ky, coming out of Luke's room (Loc. 2297, ch. 23)

And so on.

Apart from that, there are some mistakes, like "Luke hit's my arm." (Loc. 232, ch. 3) instead of "hits" and so on, but since they're written correctly in the rest of the book, it's clear they're just typos.

Overall Rating: 2.5/5 stars

Overall, I didn't like the plot nor the characters of this book. I feel like it needed a lot of work on the details and less romance and sexism. The general idea was catchy, and that's what sparkled my interest.

The premise of the story was interesting. However, not enough was explained, and the reader was left trying to fill in the blanks. I also felt that many of the characters were too hard on Ky. It read as if it were the beginning of a series, but I didn't see any more books. That leaves the reader with a sense of incompletion.

* I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Luke and Kylie (Ky) are not just siblings, they're twins. The book begins five years after their parents were brutally murdered in front of them when they were only twelve years old.

Ky and Luke are now seventeen.

"Everything's a challenge here in our state of Arizona. They breed and raise the toughest citizens to go off to war. Boys and girls train their entire life until the day of Separation's draft."

Once every four years there is a draft by the government (called The Separation) in which all seventeen and eighteen year olds are sent for training and then sent off to fight in a war.

Kylie and Luke are "Creations". They were designed with a secret purpose, but they are forbidden from discussing it, even between themselves. When asked by a friend if she is ready for Separation, Kylie acknowledges that she and Luke are ready. "We don't have a choice. It's the reason they created us. Leaving for Separation affects us differently. We have nothing keeping us here. No one we will miss, and no one that will miss us. We only have each other and we are leaving with each other. We're orphans to the America and created to fight for it."

Even though there are three months left before the official Separation draft date, Luke and Ky are snatched out of their beds and told that they "...have been selectively chosen for an early Separation."

And so begins a journey for the siblings. They learn exactly what it is that they are expected to fight. They learn who created the problem. They learn that maybe, just maybe, they can think for themselves.

They have always believed that they were created for a specific purpose and that they had no free will in deciding whether or not they fulfill that purpose. But, as the story progresses they start to question their supposed destiny.

This story combines multiple genres. Though this book is targeted at a young adult audience it is also a book that I believe adult science fiction and dystopian fiction readers will enjoy.

I do not want to give away any of the surprises and/or twists in the story so I will refrain from commenting in depth on the plot. Suffice it to say that I enjoyed this story and rate it as 4 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the first book in a new series and I am looking forward to the next book.

“…you are as good as you believe yourself to be.”

Created is a new YA, sci-fi, romance book by Author Peiri Ann.  I have read, and loved, all of her paranormal books; Created is no exception. Although the storyline itself had a different feel than her other books, the same wonderful writing that I have become accustomed to was present.

“…he’s who I learn from. He’s why I’m here, and at the point of death, he will be the only one to save my life.”

Luke is half of a whole to the puzzle that is Created. He is like everyone’s favorite big brother. He loves Ky, pushes her, and will do anything for her.

“No way am I living without my brother. No him, no me.”

Ky is one of the strongest of the strong.  She knows the rules and is determined to follow them. She will protect herself and her brother regardless of the what anyone else does or thinks. We find her to be a constant contradiction, tough and brazen, mixed with soft and wanting.

“He makes me feel something…something deep in my stomach that causes me to swallow hard and my words to get caught up in my throat.”

Told in first person point of view for Ky’s perspective, Created was a fast-paced, thrilling, and emotional read. The America of Created was, decidedly, not a world I would not want to live in. However, as I read about it and experienced the daily happenings from Ky’s point of view, I found myself being engulfed in the story. There were things in this world that were forbidden, and these things were only the tip of the iceberg to all of the twists and turns that shook me throughout this read.

Created possessed interesting and unique character dynamics and interactions. The characters were well-developed and complex in nature, changing throughout the story, as they revealed different sides to their personalities and beliefs. One character, in particular, really caught my eye and that of one of the main characters. This relationship filled my need for romance and caused me to beg for more from them.

Coming to the end of the book, I flipped the page and sighed in exasperation. I need my next fix in this series, and will be waiting expectantly for it to come.

“What happened to you not breaking the rules?” “She might be worth breaking them.”

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley.

I liked the main characters and enjoyed the concept of the Creations but there was way too much going on in this book. Zombies, aliens and bio-engineered humans all in one book was just too messy and confusing to read. I loved the scenes where the Creations were together and training or fighting because they were interesting takes on man-made soldiers and the mentality behind those who were born to fight but once we got out of the training compound I was overwhelmed by all the different ideas being thrown at me. The love triangle while annoying, as all love triangles are seeing as the are super over used, was handled well and the romance was mildly interesting to read. Overall I think this book needs to decide if it's a zombie book or a science fiction book and with that focus it would be much better.

Original Post: https://howtoreadbooks.wordpress.com/...

So, I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My first impressions of this book were quite good. It really threw you into the action. I definitely thought that the action scenes in this book were a strength, but there was a point when it became senseless violence. The violence, at times, was totally unnecessary for the plot and did actually take away from the story.

I also thought that the world building in this book was really thrown together and served to the reader in one solid lump. I will admit that I did overall enjoy this book, because it was good, but there were many negatives that I picked up. The characters were very steely and even the main protagonist had very little personal opinion on anything. I don’t know if Peiri Ann was doing this on purpose, but didn’t like the effect.

The concept of the story was incredibly intriguing to me. I often find the plots of dystopian novels to be very original and they almost always grab my attention with the blurb. I was reading the description and I was like “Yeah, robots!” I like robots. It wasn’t like it hadn’t been done before was it? But then I saw that the robots were being trained to fight and kill the living dead. Robots, zombies and throw in a hint of conspiracy and I am sold. But based on the description, the book disappointed, in that it didn’t live up to my expectations. I think that some people would enjoy this, like I did, but I struggle to see it becoming a bestseller. Brutal? Maybe. But that is my honest opinion.

None the less, I generally liked the book, so I am awarding it a 3 out of 5 stars. Okay!

Wow! What a great start to what looks to be a fantastic series! I just couldn’t put Created down once I started! It sucked me in from the beginning and left me wanting more. Peiri Ann is a wonderful writer that brought this world to life through her words. She writes with such passion I can just feel it coming off the pages as I read. I can’t think of anything I would change. It is just so well put together in my opinion.

I find the concept of the twins being bound at a cellular level and able to heal each other to be quite interesting. It’s like the twin thing being taken to a whole other level. Kylie’s journey brings us action, love, aliens and zombies. And boy what a journey it is! We get hit with plenty of the unexpected throughout the story and so does the main characters. I fell in love with the characters. Well except a couple of annoying ones, but they make the story more interesting. The end left me with so many questions that I really can’t wait to get answered. Book 2 promises to be outstanding and will defiantly be on my TBR list!

Kylie and Luke are twins created to train and fight without fear. When Separation comes they must leave everything they have known behind and begin to fulfill their purpose. The Creations are the strongest of humankind. Kylie and Luke are the strongest of the Creations. They must focus only on their purpose, resisting any distractions. Until something gets in the way, someone gets in the way and life will never be the same for Kylie. Secrets are being kept and deception is on the horizon. Also a new threat arises…. Something more deadly than they ever imagined…. The walking dead!

Updated 6/9/16

Holy Crap... I forgot to write the review! Okay, I read this nine months ago, but the story is still right there in my mind. That says a lot.

I enjoyed this book, the concept was mostly original for me (though I don't read this specific genre often) and I like a lot of the characters.

There were some inconsistencies and a few oddities that kept me from really digging in, though.

Kylie is very sheltered, which is fine, but it was odd that she was the only person who didn't know things. Like seriously, none of her girlfriends ever discussed kissing or sex with her? she's the only one who knows nothing? Her brother is basically a man whore, but she's completely blind to what what it all entails or how to interact with people who are interested in her. Yeah, no. I will say, other than this one aspect of her character, Kylie is pretty awesome and badass.

Her brother, Luke, is the big brother to end all big brothers. This dude takes his job of protecting Kylie to the Nth degree - dude is intense. I get that this is a huge deal (the twin thing is WAY more intense than in our world fyi) and that they have a lot of stuff going on in the background (that we don't know about as of the end of this book), but whoa, take a chill pill.

Cory - ew, creeper.

After a while, I totally dug Marc & Sean.

The interaction between characters is a bit stilted at points, but it sorta goes with the story, so that didn't take away for me. Overall, Created was a fun dip in a different pool than I'm used to.

Created had everything I wanted from a book, dystopian setting, weird government experiments, romance, conspiracy and zombies.

It follows twins Kylie and Luke who have been genetically altered at birth so they grow up to become super soldiers.

I don't want to give too much away with this review so I will tell you this as they reach their coming of age they have to take part in the separation where they are prepared for war.

What happens is that they are taken to the separation early, why?

Well you can find that out for yourself, Kylie and Luke have always know that they are different, they have accepted that they will go to war but the reality seems a little different. Are they saviours or are they something very different.

I hope that is enough of a tease for you, I hate giving too much away and spoiling it for you!

Created is a great YA read and a perfect addition to your book shelf!

I received a copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher for my honest opinion.
Created is about genetically modified humans made to feel less pain, run faster, hit harder & with little emotion. Twin Creations can also heal each other.
After a war with invading aliens Earth survives but world wars continue decimating an already decimated population. The Vojin are aliens that fought for Earth and have decided to step in and take it over since humans are destroying it. Ky and Luke are Creations mixed with Vojin dna and are some of the best Creations created and fight hard to remain the best while keeping their mixed race secret.

Created is science fiction, dystopian, YA, it is intense; it is awesome! Created is a work of post apocalyptic art that you can't help but get wrapped up in. It intrigues you, pulling you into a new plane of existence that holds your attention until the very last page. I hope we get more of Kylie, Luke, Marc, & Sean soon!

Love it! Created is an exciting, kick ass, science fiction novel about genetically altered twins Kylie and Luke. I love that Kylie is a strong female character and Luke is her equal! Together they rock! Can't wait for more!

The writing style was a little weird to me. And the main character, Kylie, was too innocent to be 17. No one is that innocent at that age.
