When life reroutes, love offers a second chance…

Caroline thought she had it all figured out—life in Chicago, a steady future, and a marriage that looked perfect from the outside. Until one discovery shatters everything she thought she knew.

With her world unraveling, Caroline retreats to her small hometown in Indiana—the one place she swore she’d never return. But going back means facing more than just whispered questions and familiar streets… it means confronting the version of herself she left behind.

And then there’s him. Her high school almost-love. The one who never quite faded. The one who makes her wonder if maybe her story didn’t end… it just took a different path.

As old feelings resurface and new truths come to light, Caroline must keep holding onto the life she planned… or risk everything for the one she never saw coming.

ARC Review 📖

This was the kind of romance that made me want to curl up somewhere cozy and simply enjoy watching two people fall back into each other.

The small-town setting, playful banter, and slow-burn chemistry pulled me in quickly, while Caroline’s fresh start gave the story enough emotional depth to keep it from feeling too light.

Reid was an absolute sweetheart. His patience, protectiveness, and quiet way of showing up for Caroline and the baby made it impossible not to adore him. I also appreciated Caroline’s journey from constantly worrying about everyone else’s expectations to choosing what actually makes her happy. Their history made finding their way back to each other feel even more meaningful.

I especially appreciated how natural everything felt. There was no constant parade of unnecessary misunderstandings or manufactured obstacles, just two people figuring out whether they could have another chance.

It was cozy, funny, romantic, and left me with that wonderfully content feeling you want from a feel-good romance.

ALC Review (Audiobook) 🎧

The audiobook made this cozy second-chance romance even easier to sink into. Elisabeth Knight and Noah Trent worked so well as Caroline and Reid, with their separate character performances making the conversations and chemistry feel especially natural. Their voices suited the characters beautifully, and I liked how much personality they brought to the quieter emotional moments as well as the playful banter. The duet format was definitely a highlight for me, and this was one of those listens where the narration added to the experience without overshadowing the story.

~~~~
I was so excited to experience this one in both formats. Having the ARC and ALC meant I could fully sink into the story, and honestly, it made the experience that much better.
~~~~

A sincere thank you to Ainsley Rhodes, Grey’s Promotions and Blush Audiobook Promotions for the ARC & ALC! 🥰📚

I’m so grateful for the early read. As always, all thoughts and opinions are completely my own. ✨

Ohhh, I LOVED this book! 😍💕 Like, five stars with a whole lot of heart loved it!

From the very beginning, I was completely hooked and SO invested in this story. I adored the characters, loved the chemistry, and honestly just wanted to soak up every single moment. 💗 There’s something about a book that makes you smile, swoon, get emotionally attached, and then makes you wish you weren’t getting closer to the end… and Alternate Plans absolutely did that for me!

This was such a fun, swoony, feel good romance and exactly the kind of listen that makes me ridiculously happy. I laughed, I swooned, I got attached, and I absolutely did NOT want to say goodbye to these characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was simply enjoyable. Even though Caroline is quite literally going through it, "Alternate Plans" still felt like a modern, feel-good love story, and honestly, it was exactly what I needed.

Reid: MAJOR green flag vibes. This man has been longing for Caroline since high school, he's a vet, he adopts a cat that can't find a home, and he treats her like an absolute queen. Quite literally, what more could I ask for?

And Caroline? Also a green flag. She's smart enough to leave a cheating spouse and, when love unexpectedly finds her again, she walks toward it instead of running away.

I especially loved that neither of them lets the pregnancy stop them from exploring what they're feeling. So many romances throw way too many obstacles at the couple. Miscommunication. Red flags popping up out of nowhere. The spouse begging to be taken back.

Not here.

This one was simple. It was lovely. It made me feel good.

I also loved how REAL everything felt. These characters ate fast food, drank Red Bull, got drunk, and had conversations with their friends that actually sounded like conversations I'd hear in real life. Nothing felt overly polished or manufactured for the sake of creating the perfect romance. Caroline and Reid felt like actual people living actual lives who just happened to be falling in love (again) along the way.

And can we talk about the DUET narration?! My absolute favorite way to listen to a romance. Elisabeth Knight and Noah Trent were wonderful together, and having each narrator consistently voice their own character made Caroline and Reid's conversations and chemistry feel so much more natural. Their performances fit the warmth and sweetness of the story perfectly and made an already easy-to-love romance even better on audio.

I love love, and I'm very glad these two fictional people found it with each other. ❤️

ARC/ALC review

“All that matters is that you like yourself and your life. Everything else is just extra.”

Caroline’s life completely falls apart when she catches her husband cheating, leaving Chicago and returning to her small hometown while pregnant. Going back to Melwood means facing her parents, old friends and a past she thought she had left behind, Reid Perry, her first love. Reid is dealing with his own family struggles while trying to rebuild his life. The two slowly find their way back to each other. Between Caroline figuring out what she actually wants, her pregnancy, family drama and the second chance romance with Reid, there’s a lot going on.
I liked the overall idea of this one, especially the second chance romance and small town setting. Caroline was going through a lot and I enjoyed watching her slowly stop worrying so much about what everyone else thought and start making decisions for herself.
I also really liked Reid. He was supportive without trying to completely take over her life and I loved how involved he became with Caroline and the baby. Their history made their relationship feel more meaningful and some of their scenes together were really cute and fun.
That said, this one felt like the time line was way to quick. They went from “enemies” to “friends” to “lovers” in such a neck breaking speed that it was a bit unnatural for me. There was quite a bit of back-and-forth and overthinking instead of communicating.
Overall, I enjoyed it, but I didn't quite connect with it enough for a higher rating.

Audio book – 5 stars
The audio book was masterfully narrated by Elisabeth Knight and Noah Trent. They did an amazing job bringing Caroline and Reid to life. Their voices worked really well for the characters and made the banter, emotional moments and romance more enjoyable.
Even though I had a few issues with the story itself, the audio book kept me invested and was an easy listen. The narration added so much personality to the characters.
For me, this was definitely one of those books where the narration made the overall experience even better.

Is it very wrong to say that this book initially drew me in because I spotted the really cute looking cat on the front cover!?
Well, being my first read from this author, I wasn't sure what to expect, but just couldn't resist it - and I absolutely loved it.

A typical second chance romance read with some unique little touches that had me hooked in from the first few chapters and devouring this in one sitting.

I did find the reunion a little instant after the initial meet and their behaviour and attitudes, the pair then instantly end up drawn to each other - but this makes more sense once we've heard a little more about their background and the circumstances of their previous relationship and subsequent break up.

I actually felt so sorry for Caroline given the reason she was back home and because of the pressure she always got from her parents.
But I absolutely loved the way the relationship rekindled and thought that Reid was just adorable.

Obviously, Reid being a vet and having the cutest cat did him no harm, but he was just so gracious about the situation and so protective and caring towards Caroline.
Absolute boyfriend goals right there.

It was great to meet some of the other characters in this small town and I'm sure we'll be seeing more from them in future books - this being the first in Melwood Views series.

This was a fairly quick read, but I just couldn't put it down and flew through this in one sitting.
The writing style was so easy to read and to immerse myself in and really, just have the best time whilst reading.

The narrators were brilliant and I really got a sense of the connection between the couple and their personalities shone through.
I really enjoyed the duet format.

I'm already looking forward to what's in store for us in the next book.

I received an advanced copy of Alternate Plans from Grey’s Promo and the author. Alternate Plans by Ainsley Rhodes was a book that I truly connected with. Nothing ever seems to go according to plan these days, and I connected with Caroline right away. I always thought I would be married with kids by now, but instead I'm single, have a dog, and own my own place. But who knows? Life never goes according to plan. It always has alternate plans! Lol.
I loved watching Caroline work through her emotions, setbacks, and uncertainties from the very beginning. I also loved that this book takes place in the Midwest, especially since that's where I'm from. When Caroline returns to her hometown, she's forced to confront her past, including the man she once loved before. Old feelings reappear along with the possibility of starting over.
There was plenty of chemistry between the characters, and I found myself rooting for them the whole time. Overall, I loved this heartfelt romance and the message that sometimes the life we end up with is even better than the one we planned for.

Cute story and a quick, easy read/listen! ❤️

Caroline is a constant people-pleaser, always putting everyone else’s needs ahead of her own. She catches her husband having an affair with his secretary prompting her to leave her marriage and Chicago behind and return to her small hometown in Indiana.

There, she unexpectedly runs into her high school ex, Reid, who is now a veterinarian. As they reconnect, some deep conversations and honest revelations help them confront the past and rediscover the connection they once shared. Watching them find their way back to each other was sweet and heartwarming.

Elizabeth Knight and Noah Trent did a great job narrating Caroline and Reid. Their performances brought the characters and their rekindled relationship to life and made this an enjoyable listen!

Alternate Plans by Ainsley Rhodes was my first book from her, so this was my introduction to her work, and I have to say, it was such a cozy and easy read.

This is the kind of book I could easily recommend when you're looking for something you can finish in a single sitting. It was light, comforting, and easy to get into, and I found myself connecting with the characters almost immediately. I really appreciated how relatable they felt. Nothing about them felt unnecessarily complicated, and I loved that their personalities and circumstances felt grounded and believable.

The story is also a second chance romance, and I really liked how it was handled. The premise could have easily been made much heavier than it needed to be, but instead, the book approached it in a way that felt natural. There wasn't an endless string of unnecessary obstacles keeping the characters apart, and I really appreciated that.

And then there's Reid. I really loved Reid. He was such a green flag throughout the entire story. He had been in love with Caroline since high school, and even after their relationship ended, those feelings never completely disappeared. What I loved most was how he treated Caroline when she came back into his life pregnant. He didn't judge her or make her feel like she had to explain herself before he could be there for her. He simply showed up.

I especially loved how he became the dad who stood up for Chloe. There was something really heartwarming about watching him step into that role and become someone Chloe could rely on. His relationship with her was one of the parts of the story that really made me smile.

Caroline was also a green flag in her own way. The original breakup between them was really the result of miscommunication, but I loved how she handled everything that came afterward. She didn't spend the entire story dwelling on what happened or blaming everyone around her. I also really appreciated her outlook on life as a divorced single mom. Despite everything she had been through, she still maintained a positive outlook and continued moving forward.

One of my favorite things about this book was that neither of them allowed the pregnancy to completely shut down what they were feeling for each other. They still gave themselves the space to explore those feelings and figure out what they wanted. And honestly, I appreciated that so much. So many romances add unnecessary obstacle after obstacle to keep the couple apart. Just when the couple is starting to be happy, almost instantly exes return to stir up trouble, or there would be some miscommunication and unnecessary dramas out of nowhere. Sometimes it works, but sometimes I just want two adults who recognize that they still have feelings for each other and actually talk about them. That was one of the things I appreciated about Alternate Plans. It didn't need to manufacture unnecessary drama to make the romance interesting. It allowed the characters and their history to carry the story, and that worked really well for me.

Now, onto the audiobook...

I LOVED IT SO MUCH!

I really loved the narrators for this book. Their voices matched the characters so well and were very close to how I had imagined them while reading. The narration also added another layer to the story without taking away from the simplicity that I loved about the book.

I've mentioned this in some of my previous audiobook reviews, but I normally find myself enjoying the book more than the audiobook. With this one, though, I genuinely couldn't choose. The book and audiobook were a perfect tie for me. I loved how simple and cozy the story was, and at the same time, I loved hearing the narrators bring these characters to life. There were moments where I felt like their performances made the characters even more real to me, especially because I had already connected with them while reading.

Overall, Alternate Plans was such a lovely introduction to Ainsley Rhodes' work. It was cozy, easy to read, character-driven, and gave me the kind of second chance romance I really enjoy. And getting to experience it in audiobook format as well made the whole reading experience even better.

Many, many thanks to Ainsley Rhodes and Grey's Promotions for the ARC, and to Blush Audiobook for the ALC. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

✨ ALC REVIEW ✨
Alternate plans - Melwood Views, Book 1
Ainsley Rhodes
Narrated by: Elisabeth Knight & Noah Trent

💕 Sometimes your “alternate plans” lead you right back to where you belong…
Alternate Plans was my first Ainsley Rhodes book, and she definitely did not disappoint! 🥰
This is a no-spice romance, but if you’re looking for something sweet, easy to listen to, and full of heart, definitely add this one to your TBR! ❤️

Caroline thought leaving her small town meant she had everything figured out… until life completely falls apart and she finds herself back at her parents’ house — and face-to-face with her high school love. 👀
Turns out, Caroline and Reid have some serious unfinished business. Those old feelings? Still very much alive. 🔥

And Reid may never have understood why Caroline left, but after seeing her three times in ONE day, he quickly realizes getting her out of his head might be impossible. 😏 Then one drunken night changes EVERYTHING. 🍷👀

I loved the second-chance romance, the small-town vibes, and watching these two figure out whether some love stories really do deserve a second chance. 💕 It was sweet, heartfelt, and just the kind of cozy romance that makes for an easy, enjoyable listen.

🎧 Elisabeth Knight & Noah Trent absolutely brought Caroline and Reid to life! Their narration was engaging, the pacing was spot-on, and the story flowed so effortlessly that I ended up listening to the entire audiobook in ONE day! 😍

If you love second-chance romance, dual narration, small-town vibes, and a sweet no-spice love story, put this one on your TBR! 🎧❤️

4.5 ⭐️ 0.5 🌶️(FTB)

I really loved this story. It was on the shorter side, and I devoured it. It follows Caroline, who is going through a messy divorce and moves back to her hometown to live with her parents. However, she doesn’t expect to run into a man who once made her heart race and left her heartbroken so long ago.

Starting with Caroline, she has been through it. I felt so bad for her at the beginning of the book when she discovered her ex in that situation. Then, as she tries to start fresh, she is still getting unexpected surprises. She is beautiful, strong, and wants to be in a place where she is happy.

Reed is a well known veterinarian in town. This man has never forgotten Caroline or the connection they once had. Since she has returned to town, he can’t resist her. I love when the main characters have a deep, intimate history because you can feel the tension brewing between them. Reed takes care of her and is such a comfort to her during what she is going through.

I also enjoyed the audiobook. Elisabeth and Noah were brilliant in this. It was the first time I had heard their work, and I hope I get to experience more from them in the future.

I’m looking forward to adding more of Ainsley’s work to my reading list in the future.

Alternate Plans by Ainsley Rhodes was such a sweet, refreshing little audiobook.

Caroline’s seemingly perfect Chicago life falls apart when she discovers her husband cheating, sending her back to the small Indiana town she left behind. There she runs into Reed, her high school boyfriend and the boy she never quite got closure with. Add in an adorable stray kitten that leads her straight to Reed, now the town veterinarian, and you’ve got the beginning of a really cute second-chance romance.

Reed is pure golden retriever MMC: sweet, patient, genuine, and definitely falls first.
I loved watching Caroline figure out who she is outside of her marriage and the expectations everyone has placed on her.

There’s small-town gossip, pregnancy, old feelings, and a little exes-to-enemies-to-lovers energy as Caroline and Reed find their way back to each other. Is it predictable? A little, but in the best Hallmark-movie way. It’s closed door and very low spice, making it the perfect palate cleanser when you just want something cozy, romantic, and feel-good.

Elisabeth Knight and Noah Trent were both new-to-me narrators, and I really enjoyed them! Noah felt so natural as Reed, while Elisabeth captured Caroline’s anxiety, uncertainty, and growth beautifully. Their secondary voices were easy to distinguish, the story was effortless to follow, AND it’s duet narration, my favorite!

🎧 Story: 4⭐️ | Narration: 4.5⭐️ | Spice: 1🌶️, closed door.

Sweet, cozy, refreshing, and perfect for a fall day with a pumpkin spice latte.

Alternate Plans by Ainsley Rhodes is a captivating and emotionally resonant small-town romance that explores how life’s unexpected reroutes can lead us right where we are meant to be.

The story follows Caroline, a woman whose seemingly perfect life in Chicago shatters overnight when a shocking discovery unravels her marriage. Retreating to her small Indiana hometown—the very place she swore she would never return—she finds herself facing whispered rumors, familiar streets, and the ghosts of her past. That past includes Reid, her high-school almost-love who never truly faded from her memory and instantly reignites the spark she left behind.

As Caroline tries to rebuild her life, old feelings resurface alongside hard truths, forcing her to choose between clinging to the safe future she meticulously planned or risking everything for an entirely new path.

The narrative shines through its effortless banter, unhurried pacing, and a perfect balance of sweet, emotional, and swoon-worthy moments. Weaving together beloved tropes like the one that got away, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a deeply satisfying second-chance romance, the book is elevated even further by a stellar duet narration from Elisabeth Knight and Noah Trent.

Their deeply immersive performances bring raw emotion, depth, and undeniable chemistry to the characters, making this heartfelt page-turner an absolute must-read.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I listened to it in a single day! It was a fun and cosy listen while I was cleaning and packing my house. I really liked the story’s premise as well as the two main characters. The plot is sweet and easy to follow. The romance that develops gradually, a true slow burn, is very much present. I really appreciated that the heroine took the time to mourn her previous relationship before she actually became interested in the MMC. As always, Elisabeth’s voice is soft and very pleasant to listen to; she embodies her character perfectly. As for Noah’s voice, it’s incredible: it gives you chills while completely captivating the listener. For me, it’s a 4 ✨!

This books gets a good 4 stars from me.

SO we have a teen love that ends only to have ourselves finding each other in the future......
Our MMC is a cinnamon roll all the way with lots of green flags stuck in him.
Our FMC has an ex that is not so nice......
SOOO when our FMC finds herself back living at home and some things happen, she runs into her ex ex from her childhood.
Our guy is a Vet.... Our lady is trying to understand who she is......

SOOO what could go wrong when we have a past relationship that sparks again........ Something might expand in more ways than one.... OH and also we have a cute cat that joins in the crew.
Our MMC has some family things that he steps up for
Our FMC has some interesting family dynamics...
Truths will be discovered
And a HEA is in the works.....

So we have this connection that comes back together to create a new relationship where sometimes the past comes to the front..... This was a cute romance story where our MC come back together. I want to say a lot more but I also don't want to spoil it.

I did find myself wanting to know more details on a couple things but maybe they will get answered in future books in this series. So let's see what story is next.

Thank you to the author and Blush audiobooks for allowing me to listen to this book early

This was such a charming, quick read! I found myself flying through the pages, and I really enjoyed the cozy small-town paired with the complicated history between Caroline and Reid. Their story had that perfect mix of unresolved feelings, bickering, and chemistry that kept me curious about how everything would unfold.

I loved Caroline’s character growth throughout the book. After returning home when her previous life falls apart, she has to figure out what she genuinely wants instead of simply going back to the person she used to be. Watching her reconnect with her hometown, old relationships, and herself while creating a new path was really fun.

Reid was another character I really enjoyed! Getting both of their perspectives added so much depth to their relationship and made all those lingering emotions feel even more real. Their banter and tension were so much fun, and even when they were getting under each other’s skin, you could feel the history and attraction between them.

If you enjoy characters finding their way back to each other while navigating the baggage of the past, this one is definitely worth picking up!
Thank you for the ARC, Ainsley! So happy for you!

I received an 🎧ALC of this book, and this was such a quick, easy listen! I swear, I was just doing my thing, and suddenly I was already at the epilogue! 😂

Caroline is trying to figure out her life after catching her now-ex-husband shattered everything in their life. Because... men 🙄 She heads back to her small hometown and moves in with her parents, but being home brings its own challenges... especially when she’s spent her whole life feeling like no matter what she accomplished, it was never quite enough for them.

Then there’s Reid, who is doing his best not to fall apart while juggling added responsibilities and taking care of his parents. He never forgot the girl he let go when they were young and stupid. When Caroline needs someone in her corner, he made sure she knows she isn’t alone. 🥹

This was such a sweet, heartfelt, closed door romance with characters who are finding their way back to each other while figuring out who they are along the way. If you’re looking for something easy, emotional, and comforting, this might be the one for you!

And honestly, this is such a solid debut! 💕

💕 Sometimes the Best Love Story Is the One You Never Planned 💕

Alternate Plans by Ainsley Rhodes ✨

Give me a small town, a second chance, a little enemies-to-lovers tension, and a golden retriever hero who falls first… and I’m in. 🥹

This was such a cute, sweet, feel-good read! I loved the banter between these two and watching all that history and tension slowly turn into something neither of them planned for.

And then there’s the “not his baby” situation that throws an entirely new wrench into their already complicated relationship. 👀

The vet hero + small-town setting + found family were such a fun combination, and watching him fall first made my heart so happy. 💕

This is a no-spice romance, but if you’re looking for something sweet, easy to read, and full of heart, this one is definitely worth adding to your TBR!

🎧 ALC REVIEW | Alternate Plans by Ainsley Rhoades

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such a sweet little cinnamon-roll story. 🥹💗

The narrators did a great job navigating all the different tropes and relationship dynamics, and the whole thing felt like getting an inside look at the absolute chaos that can come with relationships — the history, the stubbornness, the feelings, the awkward moments, and all the messy stuff in between.

I especially loved the whole high-school sweethearts reconnecting as adults element. There’s something about two people with that much history finding their way back to each other that just hits differently. Add in the small-town setting, second-chance vibes, pregnancy storyline, and Poppy the tabby quietly existing in the middle of everyone’s chaos, and it made for such an easy, cozy listen.

Tropes:
💞 Second chance romance
🎓 High school sweethearts
🥹 The one that got away
🏡 Small-town romance
🏙️ City girl returns home
🔥 Enemies to lovers
🤰 Pregnancy
👀 Dual POV
🩷 Cinnamon-roll romance

A really enjoyable listen and a solid 4 stars from me. 🎧✨

ALC: narrated by Elisabeth Knight & Noah Trent
Received from: Blush Audiobooks

I fell in love with Caroline and Reid so quickly. Even she finds out her husband is having an affair with his secretary, she packs it up and heads back home. It wasn’t until she ran into Reid, an old flame from her high school years, that this story really takes off. He stayed and became a veterinarian. Both had a history so it was great to see these two run into one another. A second chance was exactly what they needed.
This story was sweet and steamy. Had humor weaved throughout. I really enjoyed being able to listen to AB’s m and read this. The narrators did an amazing job at bringing this to life. Dual narration always brings something special to an ALC. it made for an enjoyable afternoon being able to listen while I did other things around the house. This is definitely worth reading if you like sweet and a great second chance romance.

Sometimes life has a way of completely rewriting the plans we thought were set in stone. Caroline’s story is a beautiful reminder that losing the life you planned can sometimes be the beginning of discovering the life you were always meant to have.

Caroline appears to have everything figured out. A life in Chicago and a secure future and a perfect marriage on paper. But when a devastating discovery turns her world upside down, she finds herself returning to the small Indiana hometown she once promised never to see again. Going home forces Caroline to confront old memories and unfinished emotions and the person she used to be.

Caroline’s rekindled connection with her high school almost-love Reid. Reid is the town vet he has a lot on his plate whilst also trying to get his life together. The takeaway is about learning to let go of expectations and discovering that starting over doesn't necessarily mean you have failed. Your just taking a different path.
