Slices: An Awakening

Rate this book
What happens when reality stops behaving like reality? Across radically different worlds, ordinary lives begin to fracture in the same unsettling ways. Memories are missing. Familiar objects refuse to behave as they should. Brief distortions reveal ruined versions of places that moments before seemed completely intact. At first, each event can be dismissed as error, coincidence, or faulty perception. But the pattern keeps returning. As the disturbances grow more precise, the question changes from what is happening? to something far more Who is experiencing it? An Awakening is a work of speculative science fiction about perception, identity, memory, and the fragile boundaries that define an individual life. Quietly unsettling and deeply philosophical, it explores what happens when certainty begins to fail, when separate experiences start to connect, and when understanding the truth may require first understanding the self.

About the author

D. E. MACLEOD

15 books
Douglas MacLeod was born and raised in the Boston area. His life has taken him through a wide range of disciplines, including construction work, military service, art and design, nursing, and tattooing; experiences that inform both the technical grounding and human perspective of his fiction.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, MacLeod attended art school and worked as an art director for publishing and magazine companies in Boston before establishing his own design studio. He later moved to Fort Lauderdale, where his career expanded into custom stained-glass fabrication. After several years creating custom glass artwork, he changed direction entirely, accepted a scholarship to a nursing program, and went on to work for sixteen years as a RN, much of that time on an ICU.
After leaving nursing, MacLeod combined the artistic skills he had developed over decades with the medical knowledge gained through clinical practice to build a career in professional tattooing. A lifelong reader and lifelong student, he has long been drawn to science fiction for its ability to explore complex ideas, technology, society, ethics, and human resilience, through imaginative frameworks.
The Jessup Universe series represents the fulfillment of a long-held desire to tell stories that examine how scientific progress reshapes both individuals and cultures. He lives in the United States and continues to read, write, and develop future works.
