With Robin by his side and the plants of Bad Seeds spreading through Gotham City, Nightwing realizes an old foe is attempting to use this night’s chaos to settle a grudge. But with so much water under the bridge, can the two boy wonders still work together as they used to? Or are the good old days really gone for good?

“Gentlemen. You have made terrible life choices that have led you to become the hostages of a puppet. I hope this rescue prompted you to rethink what you’re doing with your lives.”
I do feel as though this issue was not as strong as the first Nightwing tie-in for bad seeds, the art especially on the faces really didn’t do it for me and the plot was very run and done as fast as possible even with they hilarious conclusion…but wow are they maintaining a great job with Damian’s development. It truly is Damian and Dick’s relationship as the center focus of this book for good reason. The last issue ended off with Damian being the one to stop the truck filled with TNT bound for Arkham towers from the father who just lost his son due to a spore from the bad seeds event floating over to Bludhaven. Damian couldn’t be happier to see a truck filled to the brim with TNT, especially as I completely forgot he blew up Wayne manor recently. But Dick’s cooler and clearly sleep deprived head prevails as he uses their special foam to surround the explosives in the truck and render them useless. But even as Damian picks apart every detail as to why Dick looks like crap, the two jump right back into the dynamic duo bike they shared for a moment when Dick was batman. I love these two together. As they begin to patrol the city, batman is off trying to fix this and they need to help people until that is in place, nothing can’t help but wonder what could have been different if he was paying more attention…thankfully Damian is there to correct him as there isn’t much that could have been different.
But speaking of dwindling in the past, this issue hands the narration microphone over to Scarface as he reminisces about the good old days of the Valentine’s Day massacre where gangsters dressed as cops to slaughter their enemies and then danced the night away…nothing like these corporate criminals like the Minotaur. Scarface won’t stand for it anymore and wants to send them a message. Nightwing and Robin find the fruits of this message with a runaway squad car as they team up with batgirl during her series and run across the city to Gotham General as they atop the car…although Nightwing ends up overshooting the hood, causing his foot to shatter the front windshield, causing the squad car to crash. Batgirl stays long enough to remind him she could have handled it, and then leaves as they discover this is not a standard GCPD squad car as the back is filled with 20s sub machine guns and the “cops” are affiliated with Scarface. As stupid as it sounds, it appears Scarface is making a move for some territory as he has all setup in a local auto shop with the Minotaur’s men lined up against a wall to recreate the Valentine’s day massacre. Except Scarface’s own goons don’t look that hot as the plant life they have encountered has started to grow over their skin.
It doesn’t take long for Nightwing and Robin to trace the direction the car was going to the garage nearby, fully creating all of the traditional elements needed to recreate this event. As Nightwing runs in first to distract the gunmen, Robin comes from behind to knock a car off an elevated platform down onto them. Nightwing frees the captured men to make a run for it as Arnold drops Scarface to slam the door shut…only to realize Robin has his foot on Scarface’s head. Rather than risk loosing his boss, Arnold grabs one of his own men to take hostage. Nightwing has Robin throw Scarface back, but as the Minotaur’s men have grabbed their own guns we see Nightwing and robin wordlessly decide on a plan as they throw down smoke bombs and take down each of the gangsters. This also allows a moment for Dick to watch Damian to see how far he has come since their days together, he is much faster and stronger than he used to be especially compared to Dick’s poor reaction time from his lack of sleep. He can still hold his own but it’s slower for sure.
As they finish the fight the two look over to find one of Scarface’s men completely taken over by fines and speaking in drawn out sentences. Nightwing prepares for another fight, but Robin stops him and tells him to listen to the man. It’s not legible, but he is asking for a doctor. Robin pulls out some medication and gives the man something to help. I genuinely love this so much and even Nightwing is proud to see the day that Damian would reach for meds over a batarang. PLEASE keep this development going, I love seeing Damian talk about his volunteer time at the hospital. The pair take a moment on the nearest skyscraper they find to take a moment to breathe, to look over the travesty of their city so they can better help it in a refreshed state. But in the chaos the ventriloquist did get away…but Nightwing knows what Robin did, they both know he took as much TNT from that truck as he could and shoved it inside Scarface’s head. Robin swears it’s just a tiny amount, but Dick gives him the go ahead as he remotely triggers it and we see Arnold knocked down in the street as Scarface’s head is blown SMOOTH off, lol.

I still haven’t able to find enjoyment with this art-style. While it’s not like hedious, i still dont consider it that good.
Anyway, as someone who mainly reads about Nightwing, and that I get some glimpses of other characters here and there, I felt very happy reading about one of my favorite duos, Damian and Dick. I’ve been seeing a lot of misconceptions about Damian’s character. I cannot say much about him, because what I know about him, it’s only when he appears on Nightwing’s issues, but I do feel that people keep associating certain traits that he’s obviously left behind. And here Watters made it so clear. Yeah, he’s still a kid, but he has shown so much growth. It really showed, in such a wholesome way, the bond between each other, and that now it was Damian’s turn to be Dick’s anchor.
Watters teams up with the amazing David Lapham for this bad seeds tie in. Overall it’s a fun story with Nightwing and Damian stopping Scarface. I just really love Damian and Dick’s relationship. So this really worked for me.
I can see some not loving the art style. Idk if Lapham completely works for this, but I love Stray Bullets, and his storytelling is just so seamless and tight. Bad Seeds however is just a mixed bag of an event. Don’t care much for it at all.
I like that they have been using a lot of Batman's original enemies lately. First, Mr. Freeze. Now Wesker aka Ventriloquist. I hope to see Victor Zsasz soon among others. Really good stuff.
