This is really getting me invested in these characters and I have zero prior experience with them. The dialogue is well mixed ranging from humor to loss. The cliffhanger makes me so bummed that I have to wait to see what happens.

The Doom Patrol #2 • 4⭐️

Another fun issue. I’m really enjoying this series, and a lot of that comes down to how much I like spending time with these characters. The back and forth between Cliff, Rita, and Larry is entertaining, and getting a little deeper into Larry’s story gives this issue some heart alongside all the weirdness.

I like how the first mission leads into the next, with enough mystery building in the background to keep me interested. Niko Henrichon’s art fits this book so well, especially when things get strange, but I enjoy the quieter scenes with the team just as much.

Two issues in, and I’m happily along for the ride. Fun characters, an interesting story, and an ending that has me looking forward to the next issue.

I am obsessed with this art style, it conveys so much with these fantastic character deigns and deep environments. While I still can’t tell WHEN this book is supposed to take place we are really getting into the doom patrol spirit of it all. The oddly shifting powers, the memories that are hard to carry, and somehow this team still trust the chief? A huge shout-out to Gattoni on letters, I adore the sections pulled from Niles typewriter. This issue picks up from the alien battle negative man ended last issue, except it ended with the occurrence is a new ability. Negative man neutralized the alien by entering its mind, allowing him to reassemble the alien’s neurons into a physical space negative man could experience. And this isn’t just the basic environment, but full blown emotions associated with it. Negative man found a lone house on fire as an alien ship crashed on it (a ship very similar to the one they just fought). There is a picture of a family inside as the painful emotions flood the area. Negative man is able to go inside of the spacecraft where he finds a stuffed cat toy, which is where the most unexpected part of the powers come in…he made the memory of the cat toy a physical object he brought back. One minute it’s a cluster of neurons, the next moment Larry is holding it. Wow.

As the doom patrol arrives back to their HQ, Niles explains the next non to finally get them back on the map. A tech billionaire wants them to refute his daughter from a death cult in rural California, and will pay quite a lot for it. Cliff doesn’t buy it, they couldn’t even save an old woman’s cat last night…a cat Larry makes sure to mention he buried in the backyard. Rita makes sure he knows no one was wondering that, lol. So save the girl and get the funds to get out of debt and become proper heroes, Rita can’t wait. Niles explains the cult, the children of the ever-void, is a backed by a massive network of the wealthiest and most powerful on the planet and the object is to get in white without any media or authorities. This still doesn’t sit right with Cliff, he wonders about the other victims without wealthy parents. They will still save them but the daughter of their wealthy client comes first. As everyone starts to head out, Niles calls Larry back to talk. He asks why the alien was attempting to consume cats. Larry explains he wasn’t eating them…but collecting them. He lost somebody who loved cats and thought if he got enough of them they might come back, he’s confused about how the world works. Who isn’t? Niles informs Larry he may need to re-enter the alien’s memory scape once he returns as there is something Niles is still curious about…but under no circumstance are they to enter the mind of the girl they are rescuing. It is a very dangerous place. Larry informs Niles they understand very well.

But negative man isn’t the only one who wanders through memories, we find our own doom patrol haunted as Cliff revisits his accident and every time Rita steps outside she reaches back to become the memory and form of who she was before her body was exposed to toxic fumes. Even Larry revisits his final day as an astronaut, the moment he went through the cosmic radioactive energy and created the negative spirit. But Larry doesn’t miss the life he had, and even questions if he was every human in the first place. Niles finds his own memory to revisit, one nearly lost until it was brought back for him to hold…a stuffed cat with a button eye and a secret. The pain in the memories the negative spirit explored…they were Niles! Does this mean the alien they fought and what now resides in their basement landed its ship on Nile’s’ house and then felt so bad it tried to capture cats to make it up to Niles? Hmmm, at the very least we know Niles is still holding info from his team.

But as the doom patrol hop in the van we find a very peculiar man hop up. He has seemingly been watching across the street for a while, as the apartment is a dump and the crimson fox poster doesn’t help. This man is none other than the “great” villain WARP! And wow does his design rock in this series. He puts in his helmet and conjures some portal to land right in the middle of the throne rim of the Ever-void cult. Even accidentally cutting off their master as they spoke about their years of preparation coming to an end as they will find eternity’s embrace. The girl they are looking for, Evelyn, is front and center and when Warp shows up to report in the doom patrol she takes a particular interest. Their timing could mess with all their plans but their leader is ready. A doom patrol car ride could be fun if you are a middle aged white woman as the only song Rita has is sweet Caroline. Cliff may be having a terrible time but as least Larry keeps repeating “so good,” lol. It gets to a point that Cliff pops out the cassette and holds it out the window, Rita goes for it l while Larry stays calm and repeats the line and in the scuffle the tape goes flying and breaks open on the road. And to think that might me the worst of their trip, only for Warp to appear on front of them with a huge portal as Cliff tries to swerve out the way but already knows it’s too late. The doom patrol van sure didn’t last long as it turns over through the portal as Cliff is thrown out and watches in horror as the van catches fire with Rita and Larry still inside. His memories keeping him frozen as the car explodes. At the same time Niles also wonders if it’s too late, that the worst “collisions” are set long before they meet and that not all memories are safe to keep around. Unlike Cliff still holding onto his life, Niles takes the stuffed cat and burns it away by choice.

This book radiates misery and depression and i’m digging it. While not knowing much about these characters i feel for them just for these two issues and looking forward to where this story goes! Negative man’s powers are funky and i hope they explore more of him because all this time i thought he was just a invisible man variant haha

Didn't enjoy this one as much a I had hoped. There's enough backstory in these issue that things make sense for a new reader, but there's not enough to make me invested, to actually want to read more. We've had two issues with them fighting, and very little to really make me feel like I know what these people are like, their personalities, why they get on each other's nerves etc. Which is partially because I'm a new reader, but I wish it gave me a little more.

Why is Goodreads incapable of making a good scoring system? Who’s rating things a 3.25? Either do a full ten, or half scores like Letterboxd does.

My opinion on the issue can go up further it’s just a matter of it not being a particularly good one to read in isolation. It’ll be dependent on if the overall run is good.

Henrichon’s art is so gorgeous, and I’m into the complicated team dynamic that’s getting developed here - but why throw out the cassette, Cliff! Very, very intrigued by this cult, too.

Still feels like a pretty standard book for these characters with exceptional art, though it did feature one of the funniest single panels I've seen in a while so we stay truckin'.
