Trapped on the last operational subway out of Gotham City, Officers Gordon and Espinoza, Anarky, Dr. Annika Zeller, and private investigator Harvey Bullock find themselves at each other’s throats in a deadly pressure cooker situation—with none other than Mr. Zsasz at its center. If that wasn’t bad enough, outside the train is a horde of flesh-eating plant monstrosities! Can the motley crew manage to find away to safety without killing each other first?
Anarky: “Be free, Gordon. Enjoy the rapid expansion of our new public parks.”
And that’s exactly why Steph is one of the goats!! Great bottled story which also manages to show how strong a role community plays during disaster. And what could be worse than being stuck on a train with planes closing in and threatening to stop you all while two psychos (Zsasz and Anarky, but way more Zsasz) have their own goals aboard. Anarky just robbed the triad and is looking to make a quick exit, and Zsasz only came down to the subway after escaping Arkham because he knew Doctor Zeller and her crown of storms research would be here so he could put a stop to it in his own way. The issue starts with a standoff as Gordon corners Anarky, only for Lonnie to make a move and get away with Gordon…all while the plants finally grew too sporadic to knock the train around and send a vine right through the front window to kill the driver…which of course resulted in him landing on the controls to speed the train up. Because of the plant growth the relay system is unavailable and the team watching them can’t stop the train. But try keeping everyone calm when Zsasz steps forward with a screwdriver in hand, he kills the nearest man and then carves another notch into his skin just to set the vibe so he can get to Zeller before he believes the crown of storms erases his entire personality.
When Anarky slipped away to the back of the runaway train, he pried open a door to try and time his jump to get away without breaking himself in two…but Stephanie Brown also has that skill and she is much better at it as she leaps inside the train from the open door, slamming basket to the ground. Right as Zsasz is about to kill another person, Steph.jumps through the window between train cars and slams him to the ground. Unfortunately he is quick to get back up and stab Espinoza, made even worse by Bullock trying to shoot Zsasz…causing the bullet to ricochet and hit office Baker in the shoulder instead. But Steph also regained her composure to knock Zsasz back down in that time period. All as a moment of calm passes over the train as it comes to a stop. Garber, at the main hub for the subway system, got relay control long enough to stop it and a rescue team is on their way…but things could get even worse if that rescue team turns out to be TUCOs. Now if you remember, Steph was sent down here to check out the extent of the bloom on the tunnels…it’s not looking good and there is a massive carnivorous flower just before the harbor terminal which could digest everyone on the train if they went that far.
Upon hearing this news, Vandal is ready to blow the tunnel up on the spot. Not only is there a bat, Anarky, and Zsasz down there…but Gordon and his loyalists would be wiped off the board too. Luckily Garber has other plans, and has already arrived with a flashlight and the will to safely guide everyone out of the tunnels as he doesn’t trust the TUCOs. Zsasz of course uses this moment to try and escape, evidently not listening to a word anyone said as he runs just short of the giant man-eating plant. To get him safely away, story uses a grappling line to tie up his legs and pull him back as Bullock shoots and distracts the plant. As they handcuff Zsasz, Zeller gets a moment to ask why he is afraid of the crown. Apparently it shows him a life without meaning, he feels trapped in it and doesn’t want to face it. But the treatment is entirely voluntary, sheesh should have mentioned that a while ago, and while she thinks he would benefit she won’t force anyone to go through it. As the cops carry Zsasz out, there is still one person to deal with as it turns out Anarky also wasn’t listening to the news of the giant plant. Steph, with some gorgeous color work on her suit, runs back to find Anarky trapped in the plant. This moment with his mask falling off really puts into perspective how young he is in this world. Steph is able to throw a batarang to slice the tendrils of the plant as they walk back together. Anarky gets a moment to talk about his night, he isn’t all that bad a guy as he specifically jacked money from the train which funnels right back into criminal enterprises throughout the city. Steph tells him to save it for the courts, but the whole system is busted and from Anarky’s on the ground perspective…it’s worse than it ever has been. Even the bats are just pieces on a board. But as they are the only ones left…Savage orders his TUCOs to blow the tunnel. The two are thrown forward as the subway car is destroyed. Anarky stands up to find Batgirl unconscious, but when she doesn’t get up he decides to leave. Whelp, I take back my “not all bad” compliment.

Holy banger, this is one of if not the best issue of Bad Seeds so far. It felt cinematic and there’s so much tension. I really enjoyed the artwork too, loved it! Not super familiar with Stephanie Brown but i’m liking her so far
Not great, unfortunately. Why are the conversations all so... weird? People acting stupid while the town is falling apart makes sense, I guess... but it just wasn't very interesting imo.
