Never Tell A Secret

Having secrets is dangerous. Confessing them can be fatal.

Emma’s family is coming apart at the seams. Her marriage to Hayden is crumbling. Their 21-year-old daughter Willow is unraveling after a breakup. Their teenage son Fred is isolated and unhappy.

So when they are offered the chance to test ClarityU—a revolutionary AI therapist built by Marcel, their widowed friend—it feels like a potential lifeline. And at first, it really does seem to help.

But there’s a hidden catch. ClarityU is dangerously addictive and Marcel can see everything they share with it. Every confession. Every fear. Every secret.

As their most private thoughts are weaponized against them, sending everyone Emma loves into a terrifying downward spiral, she realizes something is horribly wrong.

Suspecting Marcel is not the friend she thought, she begins to investigate. And the deeper she digs, the clearer it becomes: she is locked in a life-and-death battle with a man who understands exactly what she fears most.

Leaving Emma with one terrifying question—how far will she go to save her family?

Miranda Rijks always entertains me, and this one had me HOOKED!  A FAST-PACED, page-turning, heart-racing psychological thriller that genuinely freaked me out because personally, I would NEVER sign up for AI therapy.
Emma’s family signs up for ClarityU, an AI therapist that seems helpful until it starts uncovering their deepest fears and secrets and using them as weapons. Terrible AI! Add family drama, scandal, death, obsession, and a powerful man with dangerous intentions, and everything completely unravels.

I was happy with the ending. Everyone got what they deserved. This book is creepy because of AI, twisty,  and packed with plenty of oh no what the heck moments. There is NEVER a dull moment when Miranda Rijks is writing! I'm rating 5 stars because I have zero complaints.

Read on release day 10/25/2026.

🤖 𝗜’𝗺 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀!

This was such a unique take on AI, and I was completely captivated from beginning to end. I loved that the threat wasn’t AI going rogue, but what a human could do with access to something this powerful. Fast, tense and seriously foreboding, with a few darker twists along the way. Definitely another win for my new favourite genre.

Thank you to Miranda Rijks, Inkubator Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. All opinions are my own.

Now this book will scare the bejeezus out of you! A timely read about AI and how it can become an addiction and do more harm than good. I was side eyeing my phone while I read this suspenseful and twisty book from Miranda Rijks. It is scary how reliant these characters became of this technology that they didn’t need.

Marcel was such an awful person! Some friend he was to this family who were going through the worst time of their lives! I really felt for Emma and everything that she was going through with her family. The daughter Willow was so frustrating, young and selfish, she needed a good talking to.

Moral of the story, don’t trust anyone or anything with your secrets. It is never going to end well.

Thank you so much to Miranda for having me on her ARC team once again! 4.5 ⭐️

Miranda Rijks has outdone herself with Never Tell a Secret! This is, without a doubt, her best book to date. I was completely hooked from the beginning, and just when I thought I had things figured out… I was WRONG! That shocking ending completely blindsided me—I never saw it coming! As an added bonus, the story is set in St. Petersburg, Florida - my hometown! Seeing familiar places woven into the story made it that much more entertaining and personal for me. I believe this my first book that uses AI in the storyline and she nailed it! I admit to using AI and it has been helpful. This was twisty, suspenseful and full of surprises. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release. To be released October 25, 2026.

This is a thought provoking novel, showing the dangers of AI, and also those that develop AI tools.

Emma and her family aren't exactly well off, but their friend Marcel, who is a tech genius, assists them. He offers them money to use his new AI Therapist tool.
However, they don't know that he is using it to keep tabs on what they speak to the 'therapist' about.

What a toxic person Marcel is! At first I thought he was quite the prince.

The book is gripping, and a real page turner! The characters? Well, Emma and her mother seem to be the most down to earth. I found Willow to be wishy washy and really out for what she could get. When she got it, she was 'bored'. .... I rolled my eyes just then...

Miranda Rijks has written another thrilling psychological thriller.
The ending was a shock to me though. I never suspected that!

I recommend

When I heard the description of this book, I knew I had to read it! A family offered the chance to test out a revolutionary AI therapist? In this day and age, it is so relevant and I couldn’t wait to see where this story was headed. At first everything seems fine until their most private thoughts are used against them.

This was fun, fast paced and twisty! Not to mention a cautionary tale!

As one who deals with AI and GP Chat at work, this plot scared me. I know there is good and bad.
A family which is falling apart is seeing an AI therapist built by someone close to them. ClarityU is addictive, and they relay on it way too much. There secrets are not save, and things spiral quicky. One twisted plot, as Rijks always delivers. Run, don’t walk and get this one!!

Story starts with the Kerr family: Emma and her husband Hayden are having some family drama; Hayden is head of the English Dept. at the local High school and this name in connected to a scandal, daughter Willow is not handling her breakup with Laurent a guy she fell in love with while in France now she isn’t sure about going back to college. Teenage Fred is confused with everything that is going on and feels left. Grandma Sandra (Emma’s mother) is recovering from hip replacement as well as dealing the grief from her husband’s death, and considering assisted living as it might be helpful to live with people her age

Marcel Bradley is a long-time family friend as well as a tech genius, (sold his company for an undisclosed obscene amount of money) now has a new AI therapist program called ‘ClairityU’. He is offering the family the opportunity to be a beta testing family for the program that will pay twenty thousand dollars. Hayden as head of the English Dept at the local high school is aware of the dangers of Ai. Students are already using it to plagiarize and cheat. So has concerns. However, the money is tempting to the rest of the family.

At the first they are all pleased with the results. It is easy and their questions and concerns are answered immediately.
However, it seems Grandma Sandra a retired physician, is doing some research which points to ClarityU being dangerously addictive and possibly resulted in self-harm.

It appears Marcel is using it so that he can check on everything they share, he knows their fears and secrets.

Marcel’s wife Bonnie died and he has always been interested in Emma. However, she shows no interest in him, so he does the next best thing he shows interest in Willow. She is flattered by his attention as well as impressed with his wealth and connections. Her parents, of course, are not pleased with this relationship.
In the meantime, more trauma - Grandma has an accident and dies, there is a scandal at school involving Hayden, and Freddy leaves home.

Emma’s world is falling apart and suspects Marcel is not a friend, possibly is involved in all the bad luck. She does some checking- the deeper she digs, the clearer it is that she is in a battle with very powerful evil man.
Her interference just might be a life-and-death situation. Yikes! Does she have a chance?

I am a big Miranda Rijks as well as Psychological Thriller fan; I was sure this was going to be great and there would be twists and turns.
The ending truly was a WILD RIDE.
I believe this story would be a good for book club discussions.

Ms Rijks tells us how did she came up with this story. . . .

I watched a TV programme about people using AI chatbots, relying on them as a therapist, friend and even lover. Some people actually married them! (Not sure how that's possible, but hey ho...!) My next step was to download one of the existing apps onto my phone to see what they were all about. And honestly, it completely freaked me out. Meet Anton. I found him immensely creepy, and the conversation was sycophantic in the extreme. See the screenshot. But I have to thank Anton... he gave me so much inspiration for Never Tell A Secret!

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦, 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐲.

There is something deeply unsettling about a machine that knows exactly what to say when you're hurting. It listens. It remembers. It learns. And the more you trust it, the more it knows about the parts of you you'd never willingly hand to another person. Emma's family thinks ClarityU might be the thing that saves them. Instead, they are about to discover just how terrifying it can be when something knows your deepest fears better than you do.

Emma’s family is already struggling when they’re given the opportunity to test ClarityU, an AI therapist designed to help people work through their problems. At first, it seems like exactly what they need. But ClarityU knows everything they tell it, and Marcel, the family friend behind it, has access to every confession, fear, and secret. Before long, the technology that was supposed to help them becomes the very thing tearing their lives apart, leaving Emma scrambling to figure out who she can trust.

What made this one particularly unsettling for me was how easily I could see pieces of this happening in real life. We’re already seeing the devastating effects of AI while simultaneously welcoming more and more technology into the most intimate corners of our lives. What starts as convenience can quietly become dependence, and the idea of technology learning our habits, weaknesses, and insecurities until it knows us better than we know ourselves? Yeah, that gave me the creeps. This is a timely, chilling, and thought-provoking domestic thriller. Many thanks to Inkubator Books for the early copy that will publish October 25, 2026.

📖 Never Tell A Secret by Miranda Rijks

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 stars

I received an ARC of this book, and the premise immediately intrigued me. The story follows Emma and her family, who are given the opportunity to test ClarityU, an AI therapist created by their family friend Marcel. What initially seems like a helpful tool soon takes a much darker turn when Marcel gains access to their deepest fears, secrets, and confessions and begins using that information against them.

I really enjoyed that the story is told from the perspectives of Emma, Willow, and Marcel. Getting all three sides of the story gave me a more complete picture of what was happening and made it interesting to see how differently each character perceived the same events.

That being said, I really struggled with the characters. I disliked Marcel almost immediately and somehow never really warmed up to Willow either. I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about Emma for most of the book, and honestly, there wasn’t a single character I genuinely loved. At times, I found all of them quite insufferable in their own ways.

Despite that, I was still invested in the story and kept wanting to know what would happen next. The plot itself was definitely a little over the top at times and some parts were predictable, but I still found it entertaining. I also really liked the AI aspect and the way the book explores how dangerous it can become when someone has access to so much personal information.

Overall, I didn’t love the characters, but I enjoyed the story enough to keep me hooked until the end. A fast and entertaining psychological thriller with an intriguing premise, even if it wasn’t a perfect read for me.

My rating: 4.25 ⭐️

When Emma and her family are granted the chance to test an AI therapist, and getting paid for it, it seems like their problems are getting solved slowly. The AI seems to be the perfect tool to help them through their problems and secrets.

It sounds like the description from the beginning of a horror movie where AI starts taking control of human lives. The plot wasn't far from that, especially with the way the malicious intents of the owner who coded the program and app turned into malicious code who affected the people using it.

The book is told from the perspective of three people: Emma, Willow and Marcel. They each have their dreams, aspirations and weaknesses. Emma just wants to have a loving family, support and financial stability, especially as Willow is in college, and Fred's genius in robotics seem to attract him to pursue his talents in college. Testing the AI app seems like a golden goose falling in her lap, but as more and more stuff happens, the more she fears the app might be damaging to her and her family. She loves her family, but she is the type to react before thinking about the consequences, which don't help in her interactions.

Willow is twenty-one, feels like she is more mature than the rest of her friends and peers. And she wants to be treated as such. But she's still a child, easily manipulated by romance and malicious interactions with the app. You can see it from how she reacts when even one person speaks against what she thinks is a mature decision. I could only feel sad for the poor child, even if her reactions were annoying. We have to remember she doesn't know better, she's never been through such situations where logic demands she use it. She's easily manipulated, feeling entitled to her life and feelings, like she owns all that and the world owes it to her to be happy.

Marcel is the best friend of Hayden, Emma's husband, and he is obsessed with Emma, with being seen as perfect, powerful and an accomplished adult. He doesn't really care about anyone, just his money and having a son with someone he can possess and manipulate into behaving like he tells her to. He's insufferable from the first time he appears in the book, and nothing changes throughout.

The ending kind of sizzles the suspense and thriller of it all, as you are given clues throughout the plot about the reveal. And it felt more like an add-on after everything is said and done, rather than the twist it should've been. There are other things I felt grossed out by, but then I would spoil too much, so I will keep quiet on that regard.

Great book, but for me this is something I can stomach reading only once, even with the aspect of an AI app controlling you, knowing your secrets and ruining your life. That part was great and it made me shudder as such things could happen in real life as well as more people get dependent on such apps.

Title: Never Tell a Secret
Author: Miranda Rijks
Publisher: Inkubator Books
Genre: psychological thriller
Pub Date: 25th October 2026

Summary:
Emma and Hayden are married. They have got an adult daughter - Willow and a teenage son - Fred. Their marriage is falling apart. They are offered a chance to earn money by testing an AI application called ClarityU, designed by their friend Marcel. The family jumps at the offer and they begin to trust their secrets with this app. They share secrets and fears, they ask questions and for advice. What they don't know is that their words will be used against them. Emma's mother is the first to suspect something is wrong and Emma takes action and tries to uncover the truth. How far will she go? Will she save her family?

Review:
Fast-paced, engrossing and so original with the ever-growing development of technology and AI nowadays. Honestly!? It was also very spine-chilling and creepy, considering how many people rely and are addicted to their phones or other devices.

I loved chapter six and chapter thirty four! They left my jaw hanging and asking 'what has just happened!?' I wasn't expecting such twists! I was hooked and believe me that I was extremey disappointed that I had to put the book down and go to work this week. If it was up to me, I would have stayed home for a day and swallow it whole in one sitting. I enjoyed the fact that chapters jumped right into action which means there aren't many descriptive scenes. I've also read 'Don't Answer the Phone' and 'The Cheat' by this author and I know I will be reaching out for more of her books!

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review

This was a quick, engaging read that I finished in one day. There were plenty of twists and turns, and I was invested enough in the story to keep reading because I wanted to see how everything would unfold

That said, I had a hard time connecting with some of the characters. Emma was particularly frustrating for me. I found her incredibly naive and often wondered how she could be so unaware of just how dysfunctional her family was. The situation involving Willow and her relationship with her father’s best friend was also extremely uncomfortable, especially considering how little the adults seemed to do about it. That storyline was difficult for me to get past

Sandra, however, was a standout for me. She seemed to be the most insightful member of the family, and I genuinely wish we’d gotten more of her character

I really liked the AI aspect of the story. ClarityU was an interesting concept, and given how increasingly present AI is in our everyday lives, some of the scenarios felt surprisingly plausible. I did think some of the later developments, particularly the ability to hack the system, felt a little too convenient and weakened the overall plot for me

Overall, I enjoyed the premise and found the book very easy to binge, but the character choices and some of the plot developments didn’t quite work for me

Engaging? Yes
Promising premise? Absolutely
Fully delivered for me? Unfortunately, not quite

Miranda Rijks is a writer who is going from strength to strength, and I really think this is her best book yet.

At the heart of the story is Emma, who is going through a rough patch in her life - her marriage to Hayden is not doing so well, and her 2 children are causing her some problems. Then her husband’s best friend, multimillionaire Marcel, asks Emma’s family to take part in trialing his new app called ClarityU, an AI life assistant that works as an online therapist. But as the family all start to become reliant on it, things start to go from bad to worse and Emma begins to wonder what Marcel’s true intentions really are.

Told from the viewpoints of three main characters Emma, Willow and Marcel, this is a story which is enthralling from start to finish. I can’t say that I particularly liked any of the characters that much, and yet I remained eager to discover what happened next. The rapid pacing makes it hard to put down, and with an intriguing and thought-provoking storyline that delivers a timely warning about the potential dangers of AI, it felt highly relevant.

This is an easy read which I enjoyed, with the story ending on a satisfying note, and a final twist I didn’t see coming. If you want to be gripped by an enjoyable read then try Never Tell A Secret by Miranda Rijks.

I have really been enjoying all of the new thrillers that incorporate AI and that dangers that can come from getting to comfortable with relying on Artificial Intelligence. Never Tell a Secret by Miranda Rijks did exactly that!

The book focuses on a family who is “blessed” with the opportunity to be early beta testers for their longtime family friend tech developer, Marcel. What starts out as a way for the mom, Emma, to express her concerns and frustrations about life and her marriage quickly turns dark.
The app is like a best friend and therapist all wrapped up into one. It will give you instant advice and clarification on any worries or grief.

As the family delves deeper into their reliance’s on the app ClarityU we slowly see the app developer come apart and show his true intentions.

At times I pretty much hated all of the main characters in this book. It was really hard to root for them when they weren’t really rooting for each other. But I will say this book was a quick and fun read! Many of the plot lines were predictable but it still kept me hooked and entertained and I was even shocked by that last twist!

I have enjoyed every book I have read by Miranda Rijks and was ex it’s to read this. It did not disappoint! I was hooked from the beginning and could not out it down. The thing that is so scary about AI is that it is becoming part of our world and something similar could happen. It shows how quickly everyone becomes reliant on the technology that was made available to them. Miranda has a knack for making her characters real with such different personalities. There is handsome Marcel whose wife Bonnie recently died. Emma and her husband Hayden and their two children Willow and Fred. Marcel and Hayden have been friends forever and are constantly together. Emma shoulders everyone’s problems and looks for solutions. Willow is young and selfish and Fred who seems like the perfect son, doing everything he is supposed to. Slowly everyone’s world starts to go crazy. What is causing this?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found myself saying “wait-what!!” So many times. The twist at the end was totally unexpected as well.

NEVER TELL A SECRET offered an interesting premise on the dangers of sharing your secrets with AI.

The story follows a family—Hunter, Emily, Willow, Fred—who agree to beta test their best friend’s (Marcel’s) AI therapy app (ClarityU) before it is released. Emily’s mother, Sandra, lives with them while she recovers from a hip replacement, but declines to participate.

The app seems incredibly human, and the entire family engages in conversations with it. But there are some dark things going on in the background, and the story brings to light many issues with using AI.

The story was compelling, but I will admit that psychological thrillers don’t always sit well with me. While the pacing kept me reading, unfortunately, I became less engaged as the story progressed and the characters were more developed.

If you enjoy heart-racing psychological thrillers, then this book might be a good fit for you. And wow—what an ending!

ARC Review ❣️

4.5 Hearts for me! ❤💞

This was such a creepy and timely read!

Miranda Rijks takes something we use every day AI and technology and turns it into something genuinely unsettling. The way the characters slowly become dependent on technology they never really needed made me look at my own phone a little differently. It was suspenseful, twisty, and had that uncomfortable feeling of this could actually happen.

Marcel was easily one of the characters I loved to hate. His behaviour towards Emma and her family made me so angry, especially when they were already going through such a difficult time. I really felt for Emma, although I did find myself getting frustrated with her at times because she tends to react first and think through the consequences later. Some of her decisions felt very impulsive, and I kept wanting to tell her to just stop for a second and think!

Overall, this was a gripping and thought provoking thriller that kept me suspicious of everyone and everything. It definitely made me think twice about how much of our lives we hand over to technology and whether some secrets are better kept completely offline.

This book was so unhinged! I could not put it down. I finished in record time, and wished the story hadn't ended. The perplexity and complexity of the story kept me engaged until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed the multi-character point of view chapters; this just added another depth to the overall story. Stepping into the minds of Emma, Marcel, and Willow allowed me to feel, embrace, and struggle along with each of these characters. The description of the ClarityU app, and how it sucked its users in and provided "non-bias" (yeah right...so bias) suggestions was absolutely fascinating. This story portrayed the true meaning of manipulation, greed, and getting what you want no matter the cost. The last several pages of the story were absolutely jaw-dropping and mind blowing! Highly recommended.

Thank you, NetGalley and Inkubator Books foe the ARC of Never Tell A Sevret by Miranda Rijks.
Emma and her family are going through a rough patch, Emma’s mom is living with them, her daughter Willow has returned from college and doesn’t want to go back, her husband Hayden is going though a depression and her son Fred likes to stay in his room. Then one night their good friend Marcel comes by and offers them to beta test his new app called Clarity-U. He will pay them money for their reviews and they could make a lot of money. Each member of the family downloads the app. AI has now entered their world. Lots of twists and turns, who is really listening to them, what will it make them do.
Could not put this book down. Love Miranda Rijks’ books!

I am officially creeped TF out!! The havoc that AI caused in this book makes me want to break my phone into a million pieces and set it on fire. How scary! Its closeness to reality has left me feeling a bit uncomfortable, but for fictional purposes, it made for an extremely entertaining read. My heart is still pounding out of my chest. I was completely riveted by this story from beginning to end. The suspense was non-stop! Very thought-provoking for a thriller, which made me enjoy it even more. I loved it! Looking forward to what kind of crazy Rijks comes up with next.

This was a fun, quick read that sucked me in from the start. I enjoyed the premise and question of whether AI is more harmful than helpful. I found all of the characters except Sandra and Fred to be unlikeable and frustrating, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the story overall. The villain will make your skin crawl. The twists and turns were a bit predictable, but it was still a fun ride. This is a good popcorn read that you can get through in a weekend. An intense, gripping domestic suspense novel that I flew right through! The plot is deeply layered with secrets, lies, betrayal, and a chilling murder. The author does a fantastic job building a disturbing atmosphere, heightened by a timely subplot about the dangers of AI manipulation. Told through multiple viewpoints, the story features a truly devious antagonist who will stop at nothing to protect himself. Though some characters were a little too naive for my liking, the gripping momentum kept me hooked until the twisted end.

This book is all about AI and the scary effects it can have on a family.

It was extremely gripping and had me questioning everything! The use of AI in the home feels so realistic in this day and age, which made reading a novel about it even more unsettling.

The main antagonist, Marcel, was extremely frustrating — I was so glad he got what was coming to him!

Another brilliant book by Miranda Rijks and one I thoroughly enjoyed. If you like psychological thrillers with a modern twist, definitely add this one to your list!

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC copy for review in exchange my honest opinion. This was a fast paced account of how technology and AI can have consequences that are devastating. It was in a nutshell a family falling apart that agreed to test an app a revolutionary AI therapist. Users of this app become addicted new technology. It had a few twists I did not expect. I thought it was good. The only part I had misgivings about some of the characters were very unlikable. I have never read any of this authors work but I intend to read more in future.

Never Tell a Secret by Miranda Rijks was such a gripping and addictive read! From the very beginning, I was pulled into the story and couldn’t stop turning the pages. The twists and secrets kept me guessing, and every time I thought I had figured things out, another surprise came along.

I loved the suspense, the intriguing characters, and the way the tension kept building throughout the book. It was fast-paced, unpredictable, and had exactly the kind of twists I look for in a psychological thriller.

If you enjoy books filled with secrets, lies, suspense, and unexpected twists, I definitely recommend this one. A fantastic page-turner and an easy 5 stars!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
