“For wherever you need to go – and then some. The world needs more healers.”
The parting note from Celaena to Yrene, as she leaves coin, her brooch and for us readers a hint that we might see Yrene again in the main series of Throne of Glass. A healer who has tended to Celaena’s wounds and an assassin who dared defy her lord of the guilds and finds herself isolated. This story lays the foundations of a relationship that is set to blossom as the women find themselves surprisingly alike in many ways but different in others. Both strong, determined and having to survive the evils of men.
In this wonderful novella from SJM, Yrene becomes the target of a group of thieves who plan to rob her of her night’s bar takings. However, under the watchful eye of the assassin, little harm comes to Yrene as Celaena kills and maims the would-be scoundrels, leaving her with more enemies but this time injured which Yrene treats. And so the lives of the two women become entwined. And we get more insight in the central character who finds no struggle in combat or doing what is right even when it costs her something.

I loved the first Throne of Glass novella I read and the first two books of the series. SJM can do nothing wrong in my eyes. A highly imaginative author who writes the most wonderful fairy tale fantasies for adults. Another compelling and satisfying read.

Surprisingly, I was able to wholly like Celaena in this one. I have some sort of love/hate relationship with her but she actually kept her arrogance at a bare minimum in this story which I'm grateful for. Celaena's/Aelin's arrogance can be quite suffocating so it's actually a relief to see a "normal" side to her without her spewing some smartass comment every other page.
Yrene was a pretty interesting character! I would want to see more of her and more of the healers in this world. Maybe we'll see a bit of Antica in Empire of Storms? Maybe we'll see Yrene again? Because you know who is going to Antica to you know what... Maybe. :)

"Magic had been gone all these years. And the gods were dead or simply didn't care anymore".
Las consecuencias de la desobediencia de Celaena al frustrar el trato que Arobynn Hamel y el Lord Pirata tenían para traficar esclavos son enormes. Después de una paliza brutal, como castigo y sin saber si Sam está bien, el Rey de los Asesinos envía a Celaena hacia el Desierto Rojo a entrenar con el Maestro de los Asesinos Silenciosos. Sin embargo, de camino a su destino, se ve atrapada durante varios días en un pueblo portuario de mala muerte en donde conocerá a Yrene, una curandera.
Este es un relato súper corto, pero durísimo de leer. Celaena está destrozada, tanto física como mentalmente, tras las represalias que tomó su Maestro contra ella. Semanas después, sigue llevando las marcas de sus golpes en la cara como un recordatorio de que nunca se desobedece al Rey de los Asesinos. A la vergüenza e impotencia que siente Celaena, se suma la incertidumbre de no saber qué ha sido de Sam, pues lo último que recuerda antes de desmayarse por los golpes, es al chico gritando como loco que iba a matar a Arobynn.
En medio de este pueblo de mala muerte, Celaena está buscando pelea. Necesita desahogarse y dejar salir toda la rabia que tiene acumulada.
En The Assassin and the Healer aparece una chica llamada Yrene, que supuestamente estaba de paso en este pueblo, pero que terminó quedándose por falta de dinero. Quizá no es el personaje más interesante, pero me gusta que saca una parte de Celaena que la impulsa a enseñarle a defenderse, a nunca estar a merced de un borracho abusivo ni a quedarse callada esperando un ataque. Me encantó ese lazo de girl power que se crea entre ellas. Además, creo que Celaena necesitaba conocer a Yrene para recordarse a sí misma que pequeños vestigios de magia aún existen en el mundo.

If only you knew... This story shows how one moment, one tiny decision that seemed unimportant, can change the course of history. How that one fleeting moment will mean victory in the end.
This second novella felt a little slower, but it was really nice to get to know Yrene before she became a healer and before she gained all her self-confidence and sharp tongue. It was also nice to see this somewhat sweeter side of Celaena in this short story.
Overall though, it did not add much to the storyline, nor did it help me understand the characters better, but it is a nice sweet addition to the saga.

She...prayed that somehow, years from now, Yrene Towers would return to this continent, and maybe, just maybe, heal their shattered world a little bit.

'So if you're going to be miserable, you might as well go to Antica and be miserable in the shadow of the Torre Cesme.”
This second novella felt a little slower, but it was really nice to get to know Yrene before she became a healer and before she gained all her self-confidence and sharp tongue. It was also nice to see this somewhat sweeter side of Celaena in this short story.
For wherever you need to go - and then some.
The world needs more healers
Overall though, it did not add much to the storyline, nor did it help me understand the characters better, but it is a nice sweet addition to the saga.

“The girl wore her scars the way some women wore their finest jewelry.”
In this novella of The Assassin and the Healer, it was better than I thought it was gonna be. Again for the first half, it was really slow and dragged a bit. But the last half got a lot better and more interesting. I loved getting to see Yrene before she became the badass healer she is in Tower of Dawn. She is such a sweet, kind and all-around wonderful character :) I am looking so forward to seeing more of her in Kingdom of Ash!! I also always enjoy seeing Celaena help out those who are in need of it. I have always loved Celaena and that love was no different in this one. I for one love Celaena more and more with each passing book and have excepted her and all the flaws that come with her character. One of my favorite parts was when Celaena was teaching Yrene how to defend herself. But really it didn't add many contexts to the story as a whole. Moving on to The Assassin and the Desert. I'm excited about this one!! :D

hello???? this was so tragically beautiful???? women empowering women will forever be the best thing to be a witness of!
But Celaena had stood in front of that wooden door to the bedroom, listening to Yrene wash her clothes in the nearby kitchen. She found herself unable to turn away, unable to stop thinking about the would-be healer with the brown-gold hair and caramel eyes, of what Yrene had lost and how helpless she’d become. There were so many of them now—the children who had lost everything to Adarlan. Children who had now grown into assassins and barmaids, without a place to truly call home, their native kingdoms left in ruin and ash.
There was such irony, she realized, in them working together—the assassin and the healer. Opposite sides of the same coin.
She hoped that an assassin’s jewel would pay for a healer’s education.

Yrene’s eyes were wide, her face pale in the light of the torch Celaena had dropped just outside the back door. Helpless. What was it like to be helpless to defend yourself? A shudder that had nothing to do with the rats gnawing on the dead mercenaries went through her.
“Do not let them move you to another location,” Celaena continued, reciting from the lessons that Ben, Arobynn’s Second, had once taught her. She’d learned self-defense before she’d ever learned to attack anyone, and to first fight without weapons, too.
“Fight back enough to convince them that you’re not worth it. And make as much noise as you can. In a shit-hole like this though, I bet no one will bother coming to help you. But you should definitely start screaming your head off about a fire—not rape, not theft, not something that cowards would rather hide from. And if shouting doesn’t discourage them, then there are a few tricks to outsmart them.”
“Some might make them drop like a stone, some might take them down temporarily, but as soon as they let go of you, your biggest priority is getting the hell away. You understand? They let you go, you run.”
Yrene nodded, still wide-eyed. She remained that way as Celaena took the hand she’d lifted and walked her through the eye-gouge, showing her how to shove her thumbs into the corner of someone’s eyes, crook her thumbs back behind the eyeballs and—well, Celaena couldn’t actually finish the demonstration, since she liked her own eyeballs very much. But Yrene grasped it after a few times, and did it perfectly when Celaena grabbed her from behind again and again.
She then showed her the ear-clap, then how to pinch the inside of a man’s upper thigh hard enough to make him scream, where to stomp on the most delicate part of the foot, which soft spots were the best to hit with her elbow (Yrene actually hit her so hard in the throat that Celaena gagged for a good minute). And then told her to go for the groin—always try to go for a strike to the groin.
And when the moon was setting, when Celaena was convinced that Yrene might stand a chance against an assailant, they finally stopped. Yrene seemed to be holding hers a bit taller, her face flushed.
“If they come after you for money,” Celaena said, jerking her chin toward where the mercenaries lay in a heap, “throw whatever coins you have far away from you and run in the opposite direction. Usually they’ll be so occupied by chasing after your money that you’ll have a good chance of escape.”
Yrene nodded. “I should—I should teach all this to Jessa.”
Celaena didn’t know or care who Jessa was, but she said, “If ever you get the chance, teach it to any female who will take the time to listen.”

This HAS to be 5 stars for me! I left this story so deep and it ALMOST moved me to tears! Really really close!

please know i am truly screaming at my 2016 review for this short story because i was fully like “this is filler, who is this girl?” lol. oh sweet summer, me shipping celaena and chaol, so hard i didn’t see the dots were dotting right before my eyes, child.
this short story takes place obviously after the first, but we get to see how arobynn punished celaena for her actions in skulls bay, and continuing to punish her by sending her to train in the red desert. but while she is waiting for her boat, she is staying at an inn where she helps a worker. And that worker? ends up playing a very big role in the rest of the series. yrene towers is a healer, stuck in a small port town, while hiding her magic that is now outlawed. this story switches povs between the two women, and it was just really heartwarming. i really do love yrene, and just seeing her really want to master her gift that was passed down from all the women in her family at a healer academy, and just really want to heal and make the world a better place - it just gave me all the feels. i for sure appreciated this novella more in 2024.

This was the novella that felt a little pointless to me. Because of Celaena’s actions in The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, she is sent away on a punishment mission. While waiting for a boat to take her to her punishment, she is staying at the White Pig Inn, where she meets a very unique and kindhearted girl named Yrene.
I really liked Yrene, and the little bit of her back-story that we received, but this novella just completely felt like filler for me. Maybe we will see Yrene in this series eventually, and then this story will be a lot more meaningful, but as it stands, this story felt the weakest in this bind-up.

I very much enjoyed this novella. There wasn’t a dull moment and I really liked both Yrene and Celaena here.
You’d think this novella would be too short to have a very substantial plot and I suppose that’d be technically true, since the entire story does take place in just one night, but I feel like Yrene went through as much character development as most characters do in books of 300 pages. Her character development didn’t feel forced though and everything was entirely understandable. The best thing about it is that while this new character, Yrene, goes through huge character development, we can see our main protagonist, Celaena, go through something similar. Their developments complimented each other, and it all just makes perfect sense.
I just feel like all of this fit together so nicely; nothing felt unnecessary, everything felt right. It’s just a good story with a good message. I liked it.

I very much enjoyed this novella. There wasn’t a dull moment and I really liked both Yrene and Celaena here.
You’d think this novella would be too short to have a very substantial plot and I suppose that’d be technically true, since the entire story does take place in just one night, but I feel like Yrene went through as much character development as most characters do in books of 300 pages. Her character development didn’t feel forced though and everything was entirely understandable. The best thing about it is that while this new character, Yrene, goes through huge character development, we can see our main protagonist, Celaena, go through something similar. Their developments complimented each other, and it all just makes perfect sense.
I just feel like all of this fit together so nicely; nothing felt unnecessary, everything felt right. It’s just a good story with a good message. I liked it.

The Assassin and the Healer is the second of 5 pre-novella’s to The Throne of Glass. It’s my first time reading the series, I’m joining some friends for a group buddy read, and I’m going in pretty blind.
*******Spoiler alert in regards to details of previous novella: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord*************
Celaena is being punished for defying her master Arobynn and wrecking a deal he arranged for the purchase of slaves. In the previous novella Celaena and Sam ruined his important deal and set 200 hundred slaves free. She has no regrets but she was beaten badly, a beating that left her in out of consciousness for several days. Arobynn demands that she go to the Red Desert to be trained by The Mute Master of The Silent Assassin’s for a total of 30 days. The journey is a long and tedious so Celaena makes a stop for several days in Innish staying at the White Pig Inn until her ship is set to sail and take her to her final destination.
Innish is a terrible little town. Nothing but garbage in the streets, awful food, watered down drinks and miserable people. Celaena is nursing her wounds as well as her ego from what Arobynn did, so she’s eager for a fight to let off some steam. The town mercenaries and the Inn’s owner are watching her closely, watching the girl who has all the knives, jewels and coin. Someone else is watching as well, Yrene one of the barmaids. Innish was only supposed to be a short stop on Yrene’s travels. But she ran out of money and Nolan hired her for the tavern, only to rip her off and find reasons to short her pay so Yrene never comes out even. No money means no travel.
Yrene wonders who the strange girl with all the weapons might be but has never dared to have a proper conversation with her. That is until on Celaena’s last night at The White Pig Yrene is attacked to get to Celaena’s room. Yrene and Celaena get acquainted as they try to live through the night. Yrene knows that if she does indeed live she has to find a way out of Innish and keep her original plan of attending The Torre Cesme a highly esteemed academy for healers in Antica.
This was a quick easy read but still a captivating story with lots of action. Celaena is an intense, complex character. She is very egotistical at times throwing about her beauty and how skilled she is as an assassin but I also see an almost innocent quality about her and an honorable side as well. She did not need to help Yrene (or the slaves in the previous book) and if she was as hard hearted as she acts she would not have.
I’m looking forward to reading more of the novella’s and seeing where Celaena’s story leads her.

“The girl wore her scars the way some women wore their finest jewelry.”
The Assassin and the Healer is not as good as the first one. The story goes on and on forever even though it's the shortest of them all, I still felt this novella was overly long. Celaena Sardothien meets the Healer. In spite of being cold-hearted at first, the assassin does something that changed my perspective of her, and I kinda liked that.
If I'm right, Chaol's short story will probably overlap with a character from this book. I'm not sure, though. But I'd like to see that happen.

I love this novella that is more likely a short story. Despite being a heartless assassin, Celaena Sardothien surprised me once again with the way she influenced the characters that surround her. This part of The Assassin’s Blade book takes place in the land called Innish where Celaena met the gifted healer Yrene Towers. Yrene was a lot more different because she grew up weak-willed compared to the headstrong Celaena. But then, Celaena made a difference to Yrene when she helped her and basically taught her how to fight and to be determined to follow the path she wants to take. This short story tugged my heart. It also made me wonder if Yrene really followed Celaena’s advice.

Sarah J Maas did it again. This woman is so talented. She proved to us that she can write a short book too with so much action, plot twists, emotions, and the list goes on. This novella was surprisingly so good. I enjoyed every single word of it. Celaena my girl was so strong and brave. I LOVE HER! MY BADASS!

Can't believe I'd never read this one when I had read the others and what makes this so much better is that I already know Yrene Towers' future - - - Truly love this series, can't wait to re-read the rest!

Finally I am getting around to reading the adventures of my dear Celaena Sardothien. LOWKEY, I kind of love the assassin more than the queen, but that doesn't mean that I don't love the queen.
I wanted to read it before I read Empire of Storms BUT I kind of got distracted with other books that were coming out around the same time. I am not a huge fan of novellas, but I do know that some of the characters introduced in the last book were first introduced in some of these novellas in The Assassin's Blade. And because I love Sarah J. Maas's story telling and her writing, I am going to go ahead and read these beauties.
So, with that said, I am going to read and rate these so I can finally be completely caught up on The Throne of Glass Series: Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, and Tower of Dawn.
The Assassin and the Healer (Throne of Glass, #0.2)
This story was less interesting than The Assassin and the Pirate Lord.
I will say this though: You do see Celaena having a softer side to herself. I wanted to read it before I read Empire of Storms BUT I kind of got distracted with other books that were coming out around the same time. I am not a huge fan of novellas, but I do know that some of the characters introduced in the last book were first introduced in some of these novellas in The Assassin's Blade. And because I love Sarah J. Maas's story telling and her writing, I am going to go ahead and read these beauties.
So, with that said, I am going to read and rate these so I can finally be completely caught up on The Throne of Glass Series: Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, and Tower of Dawn.

This story was less interesting than The Assassin and the Pirate Lord.
I will say this though: You do see Celaena having a softer side to herself. This novella reminded me why I couldn't finish Heir of Fire, SJM has a habit of introducing many new characters that we have yet to care about and shove them down our throats. Instead of easing us into their world.
I was waiting for something to happen, anything! But no, this novella was just a reminder of how perfect Celeana is from the healer's POV. And after a few hundred times, it gets boring.
The extra star is for the ending which picked up a bit, but not enough to redeem this novella.

Ugh, Celaena was such a disgusting, stuck up, stupid cow in this. I usually like her arrogant, opinionated attitude (it's a refreshing change from the usual oh so modest goody-goody heroine) but it really irritated this time around. When the giddy cow saved a young barmaid (Yrene) from being attacked by four men the douche blamed Yrene for them going after her. The victim blaming attitude really pissed me off, apparently Yrene had the attack coming because she deigned to go outside and throw the rubbish out at the end of her shift. So in Celaena's mind Yrene simply doing the job that she was paid to do and that kept a roof over her head was Yrene actually being dumb and asking for trouble. That's a great message — don't work or go outside otherwise it's your fault for being attacked. Ugh, Celaena was beyond hideous.

I really quite enjoy these novellas. I didn't know if I wanted to invest my time in a new series as I am such an eclectic reader and value my reading time.
These novellas are a great intro to the Throne of Glass series and I'm now looking forward to jumping right in. These short reads are also great when time is limited or I'm in a little slump!
The book itself was fun, written well and immediately pulled me in. I like where the story is going and am ready for the rest!

“Déjame darte un consejo de una prostituta a otra: la vida no es fácil, sin importar el lugar en el que te encuentres. Podrás tomar las decisiones que crees que son correctas y luego sufrir por ellas. Así que, si vas a ser infeliz, podrías ir Antica y ser miserable a la sombra de la Torre Cesme”.
Segundo relato o en concreto mini relato pues no cuenta con tanta extensión como el resto. Siento que ha estado bien. No hay mucho que decir. Aquí la protagonista no me ha caído tan mal como de costumbre, pero bueno, un buen día lo tiene cualquiera.
“El mundo necesita más curanderas”.
A por el siguiente.

I actually liked this one better than the previous one. I dont know...it just kinda clicked with me i guess. 4/5 stars. Yrene Towers is such a wonderful person =)

This novella is different from the first one. Most of the story is told from Yrene’s perspective, which I like a lot. We get to see Celaena from someone else’s point of view. Yrene and Celaena are two completely different people. Celaena is a ruthless assassin and Yrene is a barmaid who can’t fight for herself. I think that Celaena helps Yrene because she wants to make the world a better place. We got a glimpse of this in the first novella as well.
