There isn’t a lot of excitement or drama to be had for a teenager in Wasilla, Alaska. This is especially true for students of the charter high school, Lakes Charter. That is until a jock is killed in a brutal attack on school property.

The victim is the instigator of the school’s bullying ring and his biggest target, both literally at six and a half feet tall and in frequency, is Eli Markham, the lead suspect. The only problem with that story is at the time the murder took place, he was in the school parking lot installing a new battery with Mackenzie Carver. Me.

I didn’t really know Eli before I gave him a ride. I don’t think anyone does know him. He’s kind of a loner, but we’ve been thrown together and the more time I spend with him, the more I want to learn. All of that will have to wait though, because something is after us, something that isn’t human, something that keeps trying to frame Eli for crimes he didn’t commit.

The scheme might be more successful if I didn’t keep getting in the way of someone’s plans.

First Thought (post completion of reading): Hmm, that was okay.
Second Thought: Why didn't I know this was part of a series?

About the Story:

- To begin with, I must say that Faceless was a superb title. I was totally intrigued by it. I could not wait to see how the author revealed the truth behind it. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I walked away with a clear appreciation of how that title went with the story.

- I thought Alaska was a wonderful setting for this story. There's something both wild and almost mystical about that place. I really liked how the author weaved native folklore into this contemporary YA. It worked really well.

- Mac, Nicky, Sam, Blondie and Eli - all of these characters captured my attention. I wanted to understand the dynamics of this group all the way around. What I know, as it stands...

Mac: Gifted but oblivious as to the what and why of her gifts; crushing on Eli big time (went from zero to ten very quickly, then back to a one or two because of the chameleon effect); BFF -> the Seer

Nicky: "Sees" much and her ability is getting stronger; comes off as an old soul while at the same time, she seems immature; seems protective of her best friend, but she also comes off like she knows something or like she's hiding something

Sam: Important character to the story but also secondary; comes off as steady, reliable, dutiful and genuine; couldn't get a good fix on his age; left with many questions about his storyline and his role in Mac's life)

Blondie: Eye candy plus bodyguard protector; like interest of Nicky (could not help but wonder whether he and Nicky had a special connection that drew them together; they did seem to get off on one another after the first meeting)

Eli: Transformer...more than meets the eye; beyond were-being; has not embraced his heritage; craves Mac but denies his interest in an effort to protect her from his world

Other: Eli's father (Is he really dead?); Eli's mother (strangely absent but notably present); Mac's parents (Why would they keep secrets from their daughter?); Nick's dad (Who is he really?); The faculty and student body at the school (Umm???); The Shapeshifting Chameleon (Who does he work for? Why did he gain an ability after "tasting" the blood?)

Antagonists: Evident but unclear (I walked away thinking that there were two to three groups to be aware of in the story, but I'm just not sure.)

Final Thought: I have more questions! (Why was the student murdered? Why did the deceased insult Mac in the first place? Why didn't Eli detect what Mac was but Sam somehow did? Why didn't Eli or Mac indicate interest in each other prior to the fight scene? Is Nicky more than a Seer? Why didn't Mac know she could change? How did the shifting all start? Was Eli's dad an alpha to the pack? How did Eli's mother not know about Eli's dad? What's the significance of the title? Will there be more on the pack in the next story?)

Other Final: I liked and didn't like Mac's stance toward Eli and Sam after her assault. (That was rather frustrating yet understandable. I guess waiting to see what's going to happen is part of the patience process.)

Rating: 3/5
Recommend: +/- (This story has potential.)
Audience: YA
Status: PG-13
Chemistry/Intensity: Yes (There seemed to be a slow simmer between Eli and Mac. It never fully ignited though, despite interest from both parties.)
Conflict/Drama: Yes (There were oodles of threads in this department. Clearly, there's an evil versus good angle. It was hard to tell who was who at times, but in the end, a very real threat overshadows the protags.)
Suspense/Intrigue: Yes
Humor/Wit: Yes (mild)
HEA: ???
Stand Alone: +/-
Series: Yes

Would I continue reading this series, if given the opportunity? Yes

I received this book for free in exchange for an HONEST review.

As an author, I always try to support other authors in this crazy pursuit of writing, so I sign up for read to reviews every chance I can. I don't do it with the expectation of giving 5 stars. Not ever. I feel like all scripts could use some improvement and am always honest in my reviews. Going into this story, I wasn't sure how I would like the script. Based on the blurb, I just wasn't sure it would appeal to me, but I wanted to give it a try....

Dude.....SO glad I did. This story is unlike any I have ever read. At first, it's hard to understand what's actually happening. Not because of a writing flaw, but because of the nature of the story. You get subtle hints that the world the author has created isn't like ours, but the intrigue keeps you reading. You have tons of questions and the author does not disappoint-answering them all by the last page. The humor and the snark are strong, as are the dimensions of the characters. The protagonist is lovable, her love interest is a great mix of snark and alpha. You get easily swept into the story, and by the time you finish the last page, you immediately find yourself looking up Millard on Amazon to see what other books she's written.

I highly recommend this story for lovers of young adult fiction. Very well-crafted, Millard.

I loved this A LOT more than I expected. I liked it so much that I'm giving it 4 stars even though technically I should probably give it three.
The characters and story are great and I wish it would have been longer, but there are still a lot of issues, mainly that it repeatedly feels like whole chunks of passages of explanations are missing. I'm all for "show, don't tell" but in this case or just left me confused and feeling like I was missing information because the little I got wasn't quite enough.

Bonus points for not turning into a love triangle even though that would have been super easy to establish - lots of YA authors wouldn't have been able to resist that.
Looking forward to book 2, I especially hope that we'll get to see more of all the intriguing side-characters already introduced.

The concept of Faceless was very eye catching and intriguing. I wanted to read this book, I needed to read this book. Once I got my little hands on it, I was disappointed. I wanted to like this book. I tried so hard but there were some things I couldn't overlook.

" My breath catches when his dark eyes zero in one me. The intensity in his gaze is too strong. I want to turn away but I can't seem to make the muscles in my neck work. I feel hot and tingly all over. I don't like being the center of attention, and I usually don't even tell my best friend, Nicky, when I'm into a guy, but right here, right now, for once, I don't even care that the entire senior class is watching me have a moment with Eli Markham."

After mean guy, David, takes an issue with Eli, David turns up dead on school grounds. Mackenzie sticks up for Eli and provides an alibi for him, but in the process of helping Eli and creating a new friendship, she gets herself involved in the world of the supernatural.

With a little help from Nicky, who is clairvoyant, Mackenzie is able to see things and feel things but doesn't know what any of it means. Eli has secrets, to be sure, but Mackenzie doesn't learn about these until after the big scare and the two spend the night in the woods.

Mackenzie and the reader receive some answers after meeting Ezra and Sam of the pack. Sam becomes a friend and confidant who is able to stay close and help protect Mackenzie at school. After Sam tells Mackenzie Eli likes her, you would think the book would go in just that direction but it doesn't.

"He shifted for you. I don't pretend to know what you two have going on. I know it's recent. I've been watching. Whatever it is, he's willing to shift into the thing he despises most to protect you. That's power and there are people who will exploit it to your detriment."

Eli begins to ignore and avoid Mackenzie without any explanation. All the heat from them fizzles in a hurry and I was even confused as to why. Why cool things off?

Mackenzie's parents are mentioned by her quite a bit in the book. Mackenzie tells the reader about her mother more so than her father. We know that her mother hates to clean and organize the home and it is often a beautiful disaster. The parents are introduced to the reader, but there was nothing more added in. I feel like the author could have used the two characters in a better way. It felt like missed opportunities.

I found that Nicky needed some direction for her gift. It came off as weak for me. I also didn't like how Sam is never mentioned until after the incident in the woods and suddenly is another student and peer at her school. I really hated that Eli avoided Mackenzie with no explanation. This part of the story really bothered me because I think the book could have been so much better had the author taken her time in developing a romantic connection and using their feelings as leverage instead. The distance between the characters became annoying and unnecessary. It didn't create tension at all for me. I didn't like it.

The best part of the book is when Eli and Mackenzie are being chased in the woods. It was exciting, it was interesting and it created mystery and feeling to the book. After this incident, the book became less of everything and I began to see problems.

Sam becomes a friend and confidant who is able to stay close and help protect Mackenzie at school. At one point, Sam is mentioned to have an afro. Is Sam black? It would have been nice to know. On the last few pages of the book, a Brandon is mentioned. Who is Brandon?

"Speaking of Eli, he's the other reason I couldn't find oblivion last night. About the time I wore myself out stressing about magic and monsters of the faceless variety, Eli's face entered my head and tied my stomach in knots."

After the reader discovered the supernatural element of the book (of which my review doesn't hide very well), the book never discusses the murder of David again. After reading the end, I can surmise what happened but that story line was just dropped and the ending was a bad Dumbledore/Harry Potter conversation.

I liked how the author wrote in humor. There are several different parts in this book that have a nice dry, witting humor, with a hint of sarcasm. I also like Ezra. I could tell that he was a historic character by the way he spoke. I wanted to know more about him and why he was in a hideout in the woods. I wanted to know so much more about who the pack was and why they were involved, what they did and how they got there. Again, the first fourth of this book was great. The story was moving with a nice pace and the friendship or interest between Eli and Mackenzie was exciting. After the scene in the woods, the book takes a turn that I appreciated less.

Overall, the murder was never solved, the murder was never even investigated...odd. The ending really irritated me. Instead of the reader receiving answers and closing down the book and resolving issues for the characters, the author opens up topics and just cuts you off. This really annoyed me. Clues were poorly placed within the book. Things were added in as after thoughts. I didn't like how Eli and Mackenzie were separated. I hated how the big secret was revealed to Mackenzie and not to Eli. I don't like how Ezra was in the book for two pages. Things didn't match up in this book, it felt like a jumble and a cluster. It was going so well then it all unraveled. The question and answer parts of the book were odd. Mr. Edmunds needed a bigger part in the book to be memorable or trustworthy to the reader. He needed to be closer to Mackenzie instead of a passing principle. Many of the characters could have been much more but they were used in strange ways. I hated how Eli always seemed to do things wrong. There just needed to be more character development for him. I needed to know more about why he feared or avoided his gift. Why he chose to not hone it and gain skills for himself. I didn't like how Ezra offered protection but then dropped the ball when most needed. This book had some good ideas but the execution wasn't what I expected. I also really hated the ending. A cliff hanger would have been more welcome than an author opening a can of flying worms on a reader and end right in the middle of the worms falling to the ground. Lame.

Content: language, sexual talk such as talk of breasts and nipples, talk about how long a male anatomy is, violence.

I received a copy of this book through I love YA books in exchange for an honest review.

Book Hangover 10+

The only thing better than a 10! Just finished this one & I'm immediately on to book 2. I am not a big lover of shifter's in general but I admittedly LOVE this story line! Characters are well developed, down-home & loveable. Wonderful job Ms. Millard

This is the first book that I've read by Ms. Millard. I was really impressed. This was a page-turner from beginning to end, intense and mysterious with romance thrown into the supernatural mix.

I like the way Ms. Millard uses Mackenzie's voice throughout the story. The language and way she writes Mackenzie's thoughts and emotions are relatable. She is thrown into intense situations quickly and never falters. Perhaps her only fault is how well she is able to process those moments, which in reality I think would leave you quite stunned. When you're thrown into the moment and are left to sink or swim though, the situation calls for action and Mackenzie doesn't disappoint in this novel. She pieces things together and tries to help herself instead of standing by as a victim. I kept wondering the whole novel if there were more to her panic attacks than what meets the eye, so I was happy to have that answer by the end. Mackenzie's parents weren't mentioned as much as I thought they might be, so I hope more of their history is revealed as the series continues in the next book.

Eli Markham ends up frustrating me quite a bit more than I expected him to, but he's still endearing knowing his past and how he is trying to protect Mackenzie the best way he knows how. He seems to be really appreciative of his uncle, and I feel bad for him with everything he's been through from both his mother and his father. I love his protective nature. A lot of Eli's behavior or nuances in personality are so much more easy to understand as the story evolves. Every time I feel like you learn a piece about him though, he backs off in a way that made me frustrated.

Sam is actually more of my favorite male character in this first book. He is that great guy that looks out for Mackenzie and seems to have all good motives. I found myself wondering if his altruistic motives were going to lead to a romantic entanglement with Mackenzie, but I'll leave that answer for other readers to find out. Sam seems loyal and trustworthy, but his involvement in the pack and with Ezra make you wonder about him (and Daniel and the rest of them), but he seems to slowly gain Mackenzie's trust and respect, and he gained mine as well. I hope he doesn't disappoint moving forward.

I would have liked to read in this book a little more about Ezra, the pack, the house and the history there, but I'm hoping that maybe some of that comes in book two. There were plenty of supernatural things introduced in this novel that I'd love to hear more about as Mackenzie's story continues. The book did a nice job of some foreshadowing where Mackenzie's panic attacks and senses were concerned, but left enough to wonder where it was heading that I just couldn't put the book down. The way a lot of the characters end up intertwined by the end of the novel was also something I might have had a hunch about, but not nearly to the extent as you find out in the end. Nice job for Ms. Millard writing the slime ball villain of the story too. I wouldn't want to meet him on any day; he was creepy as all get out and completely evil.

Overall-loved the novel. Like I said, I couldn't put it down. A must-read for those that like this genre. I can't wait to read the next one.

Romance: clean

Captivating!

Supernatural story that grabbed me early and just got better and better! The story built so well and the characters developed right along with it! Don't want to spoil anything but it more than made up for the weak fragile character we started with! Loved it!!

Mackenzie Carver is a teenager living in Alaska. Her life changes completely when the murder of a school jock throws her together with Elias Markham, the prime suspect. However, as she knows for a fact that Eli has nothing to do with the murder, she fights for his innocence, ultimately drawing some unwanted--and inhuman--attention. Her conviction to do what was right regardless of the consequences made her a morally strong character, and she took the revelation of the truth with grace. I also liked how Mackenzie has panic attacks, as it made her both human and relatable.

Eli is the love interest of the story, ultimately the driving force behind the plot. He's dealing with some issues, and when he's accused for murder, he has no idea that Mackenzie would stand up for him. She's one of the least likely of people to do so, yet she does, and that really impacts Eli. Eli is also the tortured soul of the novel, trying--and failing--to deny who he really is.

The world is quite interesting. It's one where paranormal monsters exist, such as vampires, chameleons, vampires, shape shifters etc. There are also various groups who all have different interests with them. It will leave you guessing at what the true motives behind people are, who exactly is on who's side, and who is what.

I really liked the idea of a shapeshifter, and I thought the shapeshifter was integrated quite well into the plot. I was suspicious of practically everyone that came into contact with Mackenzie, yet I still didn't see the shapeshifter coming. It took me completely by surprise!

As much as I liked the plot (especially the ending, which was great!), I found the novel be a little too fast-paced. I would have preferred to see the events fleshed out a bit more, to see a bit more internal conflict and struggle on Mackenzie's part. Similarly, I wasn't quite able to connect to Mackenzie as much as I would have liked to in the beginning of the novel, as I found her slightly too blunt and oblivious for my liking. But she got better as the novel progressed, and I'm hoping she'll continue to grow into an even stronger girl in the next books.

Overall, this book has great potential. The plot is one that leaves you guessing at the nature of the characters, and who's a good guy. The ending leaves the door open for numerous possibilities to occur in the next books, and the characters have tons of room to grow and develop into some exceptionally strong leads. We'll have to see where the author takes it from here!

I read the book within a few hours, I really enjoyed it and now I want to read more!

Eli is the dark, broody guy giving off the bad boyish theme, nearly fighting at school he catches the attention of Mackenzie (and so it begins).

Even though Mackenzie sits behind him in class she starts to realise how much she actually notices about him and wonders what he is really like. Eli finds himself in some trouble that Mack helps get him out of and then it seems to spark something between them that starts to make you itch for the love story to start yey! *claps hands*

The whole supernatural thing I love especially this one as it is kinda quirky, some of it makes you think of twilight and Kelley Armstrongs Darkest Powers & Darkest Rising which isn't bad at all as the three Sagas are great :)

I do like how situations were not dragged out and the plot was thought out pretty well it makes your brain tick and you question everyone in the book. The whole Sam & Daniel part made me so confused thinking are they chameleon, what do they want? I couldn't put it down I had to know!!!

I would really recommend this book and I honestly can't wait to get my hands on more! It seems like Monica could take it anywhere and I'm excited to see which way she goes.

What if supernaturals surrounded you and you had no idea? What if every single person you knew had a secret?

Faceless is excellent. I loved it from start to finish and could barely put it down. The characters were well written and engaging, the plot was thick with secrets, danger, and intrigue with a decent amount of teen romance and angst.

Eli is just the right amount of gorgeous and brooding, respectful and protective- he's stellar book boyfriend material. Nicky and Mackenzie have a devoted and highly entertaining best friend relationship. I loved their interactions.

All in all- I loved it. There are several unanswered questions and I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment. Great job!

This is the first book I have read from Monica Millard. I believe this novel is supposed to be for young adults and as it has been many years since I have been one I was pleasantly surprised how much I really enjoyed this book. My one and only criticism is that the book wasn't long enough, I really wanted to read more so I can't wait to get the 2nd book in the series. The characters were intriguing and this book just started to tell their story. If you love paranormal books the I highly recommend this book to you,( young and old adults alike).

This was a quick, fast paced and entertaining read. I liked the developing feeling between Eli & Mack. They are kind of sweet together and I really liked how they were both really into the other but also kind of shy about it. Was annoyed with Eli's predicatable 'push her away for her own protection' thing but hopefully that is a thing of the past now.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review (We ♥ YA Books!).

I enjoyed this book a lot. I also liked all the characters. I liked Mack, Eli, Nicky and Sam. Yeah, I definitely liked Sam. Even more than Eli, I confess.
The story was a little entangled and some times it was hard to trust anyone. And I definitely wanted to kick Eli in the balls for how he treated Mack after that night. I really felt as hurt as she did. He'd been all cute and charming and then he gave her the cold shoulder. What. The. Hell?!?!
I didn't always trust Sam, but I also liked him. He really was charming. I think I have a little crush. Yup.
So, now I can't wait to read the next book.

The victim is the instigator of a school's bullying ring. The story take place in Wasilla, Alaska where there isn’t a lot of excitement. But then a high school jock is killed and it was a brutal attack that happen on school property. There are some supernatural elements that will pull you into the story. I don’t want to give too much of the story away.

So if you are looking for a book that will keep you turning the pages, and has a lot of intrigue than I would suggest that you need to pick this one up. This is a young adult fiction, which is written so that you couldn’t put it down. It was such an enjoy I can’t wait to see what Monica Millard, has instore for us in her next book.

TOO SHORT!
The plot was really good but it was too short! I really wanted to know so much more about the characters (personalities and background) and Eli’s and Mack’s relationship before they fell in love. Also, there were parts of the book that for me personally were frustrating because they were not of satisfying length (I read more lengthy books). However, the book kept me in suspense and really wanting to know what happens next after every page and it was really easy to fall in love with some of the characters (Eli, Sam, and Nicky).
I enjoyed this book, though for me, I felt it left me with a lot of questions that could have been answered in this book

The book's cover and description were intriguing.

Mackenzie is really a great character. She has the instincts when a situation calls for it. I also appreciate the character of Eli. I admired his protectiveness towards Mackenzie. I only hated the part when he avoided Mackenzie.

However, it intrigues me how the death of David was only mentioned at the start of the book. It doesn't tell the readers what really happened.

Still, the book was definitely a page-turner and I definitely enjoyed it. I'm looking forward for the next books and see how this turns out.

When I picked up Faceless on my kindle I didn't look at the cover, didn't read the blurb. All I had was the title. I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading and from the first chapter I was in love. No long introductions to set the story line, it felt like I was smoothly brought into this world. Monica Millard did a wonderful job writing Mack's story. I couldn't put Faceless down once I started reading and finished it really quickly. Mack gets caught in the middle of someone after Eli, they have to figure out who it is before they get to them.

I really loved how easy it was to read this book. I could not put it down, and very quickly wanted to read the second book also.
As far as this book goes with this particular genre I love it the characters were strong and the female lead was not written as week, which I really loved. It was a little predictable, however I did love how the characters developed and as an adult who loves to relive my teen years through getting lost in books, I could put myself in the characters shoes and really feel what they were feeling, the excitement, fear, love and loss.
Thank you Monica for a great book.

This book has an almost original feel to it, but the plot needed a little more fleshing to it. Another problem I had was that there was very little resolution in the end, but I wasn't interested enough to get the next book and have those questions answered.
Overall, this is an interesting book with potential.

Like few my other reviews, this one's going to be really long too.. Brace yourselves!
First of all.. I received this book from the author Monica Millard via the group We ♥ YA Books! in exchange of an honest review. Thank you so much, I really appreciate the gesture.
I will try and keep the review as spoiler free as I can..
I am going to start off by saying that I really enjoyed reading this book.. It is always great when you have more than one kind of supernatural creatures in one story.
The plot was really good and the concept was great! All the characters in this book were well written but it could've done with a little more backstory of each of them.
The best part in this book? It's a tie between Sam and Nicky! They are just two really adorable and connectable characters.. Well apart from the obvious!
Sam was outright fantastic.. In the beginning I didn't bother remembering his character much because he felt like one of those background characters but then BOOM! He's a freaking cool guy and is one of the important ones..and undoubtedly my favourite! The author did a great job with Sam, making me want to read more of him.
Nicky on the other hand, was great right from the beginning. She is an amazing friend and I am kind of jealous of Mack. Nicky's power was something that I've been interested in, for a really long time and I must say that her character and her use of her powers were really satisfying to read..(sorry if that sentence sounded weird)
And then there's Daniel.. He was a surprise to be honest! For some reason his character wasn't something I expected. He's this blend in the background type of a guard-ish guy.. He kinda reminded me of Eddie from VA! But that comparison ends with him silently keeping an eye on her. He was a plus point to the book, if you ask me.
There were a lot of moments where I was like "Woah! Cool!" But there were moments where i went "What's happening here?" Too.. Not going to deny that!
So, the main problem that I had with this book was that it seemed off at times. Some parts of the book made me think "did I miss something?" It felt like some of the story was cut out in editing..
Although that didn't result in lapses in the story, it made me question Mack's reasoning skills! *spoiler alert* I wouldn't run off to the woods, even with someone I've been crushing on, without bothering to ask why! Also there were parts where Mack says something which felt like she was in the middle of a conversation instead of it being the beginning of a conversation!
That being said.. This book was a really fun read.. I would definitely recommend it to all the YA paranormal, supernatural fans out there..
P.S:Now I am conflicted..because I have an exam in two days but I want to read the second book, because more Sam! That guy! ❤ (Although I read a review saying that there wasn't enough Sam in the next book.. I am hoping it's the usual "I'll never get enough of him" and not actually "not enough Sam")..
And yeah, I don't think anyone who read this book would complain if we get a full book centered around Sam!

This book was okay. I am glad I read it, but it is not worth re-reading. I got it on my kindle for 99 cents so I am not too put out by it. I know just what I didn't like about it. It was the dialogue for one. Almost every time someone talked I thought 'who would ever say all of this?' Or something along those lines. And people saying things that people would never say just so the information is given to the reader.

Another thing that a lot of authors do is tell you the information and not show you it. I felt like I was getting so much of the information shoved in my head that I really didn't feel anything for it.

Then there is the lengthy declarations of feelings or ideas. It really bothers me when the characters go into minute detail about how they felt and when they felt it. Not that you never tell the person you love all of that stuff. But it is over time not in one big speech in the middle of a life or death moment. Along with that is the adults in the book oversharing so much. The no one tells someone they hardly know everything about everyone. (Friends or teachers) I think it was a way for the writer just to give information again. And then everyone somehow knows everything almost instantly. It is very off putting.

With all of that head shaking and groaning I was doing, I did find the story interesting enough to keep reading. I liked the world and wanted to know what was going to happen with everyone. The twist and turns I guessed but it didn't make it less interesting. Minus the poor dialogue, all the the characters were interesting and believable. The leads were very likable. The story hooked me enough to get the next book just to know what happens to them. So now off to book 2. :)

At first I was sceptical of ever enjoying this book because of the crass and juvenile content in the first chapter. I felt like I was reading a junior high essay with how choppy and overboard it felt but then the story and characters began to take shape and I was hooked! Now my own curiosity compels me to read the next one. This contains some language and explicit comments typical of some teens.

This book grabbed me from page one. It is fast paced and keeps you interested. I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to read more by Monica Millard.
