A completely adorable paranormal romance about the forbidden love between a werewolf boy and a weresheep girl.
The Capshaw sheep shifters and the Wolfe werewolves have carried on a feud for generations in their small town. It’s less murder in the dark, and more avoiding each other, getting in fist fights, and bringing up thirty-year-old fender-benders at inopportune moments. But Julie Capshaw and Damon Wolfe secretly befriended each other as little kids, until it ended disastrously when their families found out.
Julie went off to college, while Damon stayed home. But her English literature degree was about as profitable as one might expect, so back she came to help out at the family farm. Her future stretched before her, long and dreary and full of potatoes.
Needless to say, Julie and Damon’s childhood friendship turns into a very adult romance. But can they overcome his abusive father who rules the pack with an iron fist, the asshole alpha of a neighboring pack angling for an arranged marriage with Damon’s sister, and millennia of bad blood between wolves and sheep?
Of course they can! It’s a romance! But a romance that takes some rather unpredictable turns in the middle, giving it excellent narrative drive. In other unconventional elements, it has a lot of focus on the families rather than just on the main couple, and not just on characters who can be paired up in later books. I especially enjoyed the rifle-toting sheep grandmother.
And, of course, there’s the sheep. The worldbuilding is sketched in lightly but convincingly and originally for both species, from the different ways that sheep eyes work to the different cultural attitudes toward romance. And all the descriptions of sheep running around being heroic and the heroine’s little sheep hooves clattering over the floor never failed to crack me up.
It’s funny and sweet, instant comfort-reading.

Damon knows Julie is his mate, he wants to claim her but with that it comes with possibly having t leave their families for good. When Damon's father is attacked, Damon is put in danger. With Julie's help, Damon tries to protect his pack as well as hers. Can old rivals build a new future together?
The overall concept of this story was intriguing, but I found that it was a bit rushed. With mates it can be instant, but had a few holes that I think could have elevated the story. Liked Julie, she was sweet and strong. Damon was a strong man but was a little lost. Would check out more by this author.

September 7, 2015This one hit a personal nerve really early on and I found I just couldn't continue. It features a brutally abusive father as a central obstacle that I could see would provide the main antagonist to the story. I couldn't stomach it. I didn't want to see any more, even if I can be reasonably certain they overcome in the end. I don't want to witness the getting there. So I called it quits and will leave it unrated because I didn't get more than a chapter or two past the prologue.

Abusive dad of hero is huge turn off. How can h and H be intimate after seeing each other for the first time in ten years?. Family drama between two families is super crazy.

Sweet, some witty repartee
Pairing a wolf with a sheep is a bold move, but it works in this story. The hero isn't unbearably alpha with boorish, womanizing tendencies. The heroine isn't a ball of insecurities or impossibly beautiful. These are salt-of-the-earth folks who come from farming families -- refreshing, that. Well written with a smattering of witty repartee, this book is really enjoyable, if not spectacular. A solid four stars.

By the HEA, a decades-old, ferocious family feud begins to fizzle out, and bullies are battled into remission. This is an excellent coup for enemies-to-lovers lovers.

Entertaining book! Julie is a sheep shifter. Her family has always been afraid of wolves due to a past argument no one remembers. She meets Damon an alphas son but she’s not afraid of him. They all used to play together when they were young. Sadly, times changed & major issues came up. Its a sweet story & I enjoyed it. I look forward to reading future books by Ms Esker.

Sweet twist on Star-Crossed with a solid dose of humor.
Very much found this enjoyable, and story doesn't suffer if you jump the more adult bits. Delivered nicely on my happy ending.

DNF at about 75%
New adult but with shifters, declarations of never-ending love (and multiple rounds of sex in forbidden places) within hours of seeing each other for the first time in ten years, young people acting stupidly and impulsively, etc. Lots of things I really don't enjoy reading.
When it got to the point where I starting skimming more than I was reading, I figured I really didn't care how things turned out and simply called it a day. This just was not my kind of story.

I love it when a book I didn't know what to think of turns out to be be a gem. This book is a gem. I am looking forward to the next one, I wish it was out already. I am so glad I took a chance on this book and you will be too. Read it!!!

Different take on a forbidden shifter romance.
Kindle Unlimited standalone book. He's a wolf shifter and she's a sheep shifter. Their families don't like each other and when they are young they where friends, until his dad finds out. 10 years later, she returns and finds out that there may have been more to their friendship then kids having fun. Good read.

Wolves aren't very nice to sheep, so in human form things seem to change. There are always those who like to throw their weight around until the real hero comes along. Thank goodness for his mate.

Enjoyed the story
Loved the H/ h. Interesting story--- different t then other shifter book. Well_written. But I did not like the last chapter. -- the sex scene in that chapter was to long and detailed, I had to skip it -- it was to force and do much for the last chapter .

Sweet story!
This was a good story about Shifters. Depressing in places but a good book overall. Nice ending. You should read this!

Once again I have found a good book in this story. I found it hard to put it down until the end.

Not my favorite of Lauren Esker's shifter romances, but still 3.5 on Amazon
The relationship is more or less insta-love, since they've only exchanged a few sentences *as adults* before hopping into the hayloft, though it still manages to be kind of a sweet story, partly because of the youthful, NA vibe. It's a variation on those recognition-of-fated-mate stories, and although the heroine had considered that possibility just a myth, she doesn't take long to be convinced by her separated-and-now-reunited unsuitable friend.
The wolf pack is seriously messed up again — "again" meaning as referred to in "Guard Wolf". I wonder when Esker's going to give us a non-dysfunctional pack, after having claimed that wolves are all about family — though at least heading in that direction is part of the happy ending this time.
The depiction of "alpha force", the dominant's ability to control pack members even against heir will, in the hands of a tyrant or an ambitious schemer, is scary. I was a smidge confused at one point, but realized that it's a matter of degree re. strength of will, the way a wolf with the potential can win to *become* alpha, NOT something the pack leader has *because* he's alpha.
The heroine's grandmother is a great character, and there are some believable and appealing family moments, but I personally found some of the repeated fairy-tale-trope humor to be lame (and this is coming from a bad-pun lover!).
The action parts are exciting, the protagonists are likable, and the proofreading is good (I only caught one typo, "thing" for "thin", and one syntax mismatch), so if you don't mind insta-love, I can recommend this as a quick read to pass a few hours.
