Second Edition includes bonus chapter "Jesu's Peril" plus a sneak peek at book three, Dark Becoming.
Ema Marx wishes her life would go back to normal, but there’s nothing normal about being a Romani-Vampyre with an ancestor who wants you dead. Apollyon is back, wreaking havoc on the lives of everyone she cares about while plotting her demise. Ema thought she would find a new best friend in her trainer, Bridget, until the exotic vampire vies for Jesu’s attention. Jesu can date who he wants, right? Ema has more important things to worry about, like honing her powers. When Apollyon’s thugs appear out of the shadows to attack her, Ema knows it’s time to take action. But everyone else has other plans in mind. One thing is for certain, being under house arrest in the German vampyre king’s castle was not part of her plan to save the day.
J.D. Brown knows that vampires exist because she’s dating one and no, he doesn’t sparkle. Unfortunately, he’s not immortal either (or maybe her standards are too low). A magnet for subcultures and weirdness, J.D. was that socially awkward girl with more fictional friends than real ones. As a child battling a hearing loss and a medical condition with no name, J.D. found comfort in books where strong women always saved the day and got the guy. An obsession with Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Buffy the Vampire Slayer led J.D. to believe that her mutated chromosome made her something more, not something less. Thus her stubborn flare to persevere was born. A lover of fine cuisine, coffee, and shoes, J.D. never understood why shoe stores don’t serve Starbucks and soufflé. She resides in Wisconsin were she writes urban fantasy—aka vampires for adults—and has political debates with her dogs. She loves to hear from fans and is active on http://Facebook.com/AuthorJDBrown
“There's nothing worse than waiting and not knowing what'll happen to you. Your own imagination can be crueler than any captor.” - Richelle Mead, Frostbite
when Ema Marx resurrects her ancestor Apollyon from the dead, all hell breaks loose. together with Prince Jesu ta Korento, Ema flees to Germany to hide. meanwhile, Apollyon takes steps in planning his revenge and realizing his dreams of world domination by gathering an army of dark supernatural allies... author J.D. Brown's sequel to Dark Heirloom was an exciting read. the writing flowed seamlessly from start to finish and the worldbuilding was as fascinating as ever. one of the things which impressed me in the first book was Ms. Brown's vision of hell. here in Dark Liaison, her creative imagination continued to impress me with her version of a vampire hotel and especially that of a vampire prison. i also got to learn more about vampire history, politics, genealogies and clans as new characters were introduced. nothing was left to chance. every little detail was well thought of and significant to the storyline. the main protagonist, Ema, learns more about being a Romani-Vampyre. she meets others of her kind, befriends some of them and inadvertently makes enemies of others. her new life is fraught with danger and intrigue that one can feel the tension oozing out of the pages at times. overall, i enjoyed every word of this 400-page novel and my jaw literally dropped at the explosive cliff-hanger ending! i highly recommend this book/series and i look forward again to the next installment.

Dark Liaison is a excellent edition to the Ema Marx series! J.D. Brown paints such an amazingly detailed picture of the characters and their surroundings it's like you are standing right beside them in the story. I am a huge fan of the characters in this series and was thrilled to meet some very interesting new ones this time around. Now even though the first half of the book was more a look into how Ema was handling everything that has been happening to her and also her confusing feeling for Jesu the second half was an amazing whirlwind of chaos and action both good and bad. And I have to say J.D.'s bad guys and creatures take your imagination to a whole new level! At the end Dark Liaison quickly wraps up to a shocking surprise and it's clear Ema still has a whole lot of growing up to do and some very difficult decisions to make. I really can't wait to find out what happens next and in my opinion Dark Liaison is definitely recommended!
Yet again, another great addition to the book series. Fresh and new, it picks right up where the book 'Dark Heirloom' left off. A book full of thrills and chills, with a touch of heartwarming moments. A must read to anyone and everyone wanting a fresh new look on the life of a vampire.
Book one, Dark Heirloom, was a good start, one I wanted very much to get through so I could get deeper into the series. And I'm so glad I did. This was another one of those cases of "Never judge a series by the first book!" It's a rule of mine and I'm so glad I followed it this time as well. It's not that Heirloom was bad (it wasn't!), but it was her first book, and I knew she was going to grow in leaps and bounds. I just seriously never expected her to grow so well so fast!
Ema is developing into an intense, quirky, and slightly mixed up MC that is extremely likable. Does she have some annoying qualities? Sure, all MCs have at least one, usually a few. She's young, she's a bit flighty when it comes to deciding how she feels about Jesu, although once she did she stuck to it, which was a good thing. She's impulsive, which isn't a good quality in a young woman in the position she's found herself in, but there are enough supporting characters to help her get out of trouble when she gets herself into it that it all works out in the end. So, all in all, she's quite likable.
Now Jesu, he's a bit of a difficult MC to immediately like. He's a tad on the weaker side, but I think, for right now, that has more to do with his insecurities coming from his feeling lesser than his brother, and even than Ema. Vampyres are higher up on the evolutionary chain than Vampires, and he's a Vampire while his bro and Ema are both Vampyres. He also has issues with how long it took Ema to decide he was the one for her, and her reasons behind her reluctance. And then there's his premonition that leaves her as the hero, not him, so it's easy to see why he'd be a little insecure. I think that may change though as the series progresses. I have come to like him, though.
The storyline is exciting. There's Jesu's and Jalmari's father, Apollyon, a mad Vampyre who is as evil as they come and who wants Ema (reasons to be discovered when you read it), and will do anything to capture her. He's the bad guy of the series so far, and a nasty one at that. I mean, yuk nasty as well as evil nasty! Great antagonist! Actually, Jen has created some great peripheral characters all the way around.
I'm really enjoying this series so far, and am in a bit of a hurry to get on to Dark Becoming, so I'm not going to give anymore of this away. I'm just thoroughly enjoying watching Jennifer go from a newbie author to a more experienced one, watching the entire journey from her first book on, which I have every intention of doing. This, this is my favorite thing about finding new authors (new to me, new to writing, either way). Now, Jen has been around for awhile, but I've just now gotten around to reading her work, and I'm kicking myself for taking so long!
So Very Well Done, Jennifer Brown! So Very Well Done, Indeed! I'm off to Dark Becoming, and all that follow!
This storyline just gets better and more compelling with each syllable MJ Webb releases with her breathy angst and passion narrating the amazingly intricate world created by JD Brown. I'm still flabbergasted as to how someone can bring together such a complex fully working sub-culture of beings and with just a few cleverly thrown in words make me, a grown up 47 year old, question whether there is a golden thread of truth in this book!!!
But I digress... This book picks up immediately from the excellent book 1, Dark Heirloom, and speeds the reader deeper into the world of Vampires, Shape Shifters and other paranormal entities you never knew might exist. Using historical references makes the story relevant to the reader but also makes the reader feel as though they own parts of the storyline, in a strange way!
Again for this book MJ Webb creates the most sensual voice for each character. For this book she brings a hard edged human innocence to Ema Marx whilst the centuries old beings have aged voices that are velvety soft and wrap around the readers and draws them into the scenes playing out in the book, even the ones they shouldn't be getting intimately involved in!
If book 1 was good and book 2 was great, I can't wait to see what JD Brown does in book three and I definitely can't wait to hear MJ Webb read it to me.
I am loving this series and I'm sure anyone who loves PNR will love it too xx
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and provide my honest review voluntarily.
I’m glad this series is complete, because holy cliffhangers!!!! 😱
This book picks up where the first book left off. King Apollyon has risen from the dead. Leena is dead, and Jalmari is missing. Ema and Jesu have fled to Germany to hide behind the Alpan clan. Ema struggles to control her bloodlust and master her powers.
This time around, the story alternates between Ema’s POV and Maria’s. It was a bit odd at first—I was expecting Jalmari or Jesu to be the second POV—but I ended up liking Maria’s chapters. Maria and her husband are both bound by a lifetime oath to serve King Apollyon, and you get to see the scenes of King Apollyon building his army and starting to take over through her eyes. There are spells, necromancy, and lots of action.
Ema’s scenes focus a little more on the growing romance with Jesu in this book. There is some fight training, and you also learn a bit more about the world. You are introduced to some new characters, as well as re-introduced to a certain creepy old woman from the first book 😱 Ema is very impulsive and runs into danger without thinking and keeps secrets from Jesu, which got a little annoying, but I still found myself rooting for her.
I adored Dark heirloom so much. But I struggled a bit to get into Dark Liaison. It felt like a slow start and I found myself having to take lots of breaks.
I think my biggest issue was Maria’s POV this time around. I wasn’t invested in her as a character and I was just eager to get through her chapters and back to Emma.
Speaking of Emma, YES PLEASE. I really loved her character development through this book. While she has a few cringe worth moments, she really just kicked butt in this book. Call me a hopeless romantic but FINALLY🔥 I was patiently waiting and waiting. Thank goodness it happened. But that cliffhanger 🧗♀️
I can’t wait to listen to the next one.
I usually do a mix of listening and reading. I listened to Dark heirloom and Dark Liaison. Both read by MJ Webb and yes girl. As usual, her accent is on point. She really brings the characters to life, even the males. She’s a must watch narrator and I can’t wait the hear more.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
We follow Ema to Germany after Leena is killed by Apollyon during is rise from the underworld. She is being held responsible for killing Leena making her have to flee for her life. While in Germany, Ema is determined to train and work toward her destiny of returning Apollyon back to underworld by killing him. We learn a great amount about how Apollyon ruled when he was first alive and what he is working to return the vampiric world to. I encourage others to dive into the world that JD Brown has created.
The anticipation in Dark Liaison is both sweet and utterly terrifying.
As Ema learns more about her new reality, she finds she is both completely confused and frightened while also being heroically strong. She will learn to use every character flaw and strength to her advantage so that she can defeat those trying to hurt her and those close to her. The question is...who can she trust? Who can she depend on to stand beside her?
This second installment of the Ema Marx series is bewitching and enticing. It leaves you wanting more, waiting for book #3.
This is a though one... though I enjoyed it, I'm not sure that this series is for me. Good characters, unique plot. The suspense, action and romance is nicely balanced. Well written! I guess I'm just not that into the "angsty-teenager" vibe I'm getting. That's the reason for giving 4 stars, because it is good, but it's just not for me - and I would feel bad giving a bad rating simply because, I don't know, I want a more mature heroine? Maybe Ema will probably progress that way in the series.
Very disappointing. A lead character who does nothing of note apart from bumble from one scene to another. And a pregnancy added to the mix - highlight (no, definitely not) of the second novel. I hate to see what meaningless plot this adds up to. Supposed can fly and essence dipersal ( turns to mist - where have I heard that before) but 'dove onto my stomach and scrambled to the ledge' of the loft.
This book picks up right where book 1 left off... and continues to not disappoint!! I love the character development, as well as the development of the relationship between Ema and Jesu. Book 2 is equally as fast paced at book 1, with just as many twists and turns and surprises. However, be forewarned once again... it is a cliff hanger. I can not wait to read the next book and see what happens to Ema and Jesu!
If you have read the first book then this is a must. This book is utterly outstanding like the first book. The characters continue to grow and develop and the writing makes you feel like you are actually in the story. More gripping and she is in more trouble than ever in this story. I am looking forward to the next read. I was given this book as an arc for a honest review.
The continuing journey of Ema the multi type vampyre. She flees to Germany to try and escape from Apollyon. Apollyon continues to add supporters to his army while searching for her.
I would have given it 5* bar the gratuitous bit of erotica in it, not really needed.
This is Ema Marx book two & it's just as good as the first. Vampires, demons & the undead, it's got everything you could ask for all in one package. That Ema sure is one feisty female & I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Highly recommended must read.
I enjoyed this book it is book two in the An Ema Marx series. This book picks up right where book one ends. This series is getting better and better. It was hard to put down. I look forward to book three to see what happens next.
A fantastic read! Keeps the momentum from the first book up and with a few twists and turns that keep you guessing, it's a book that's hard to put down.
I love this series thus far, though it is starting to interfere with my sleep as I struggle to set it down. I look forward to reading the other 2 books as well.
Vampires are more magical than usual in this book. A fun read. I listened to it. MJ Webb really brings the characters to life. Looking forward to the next book.
This is the second volume of the series that I've read, and is the better of the two. the characters come together nicely, the plot is well constructed and the whole thing just flows. I love Ema, she's so flawed and mixed up, but sucks you in regardless.
You know that feeling when you get a good bokk in your hands and you don't want to open it just yet because you know that crazy rush from reading is going to be too short and you just want to hang on it?
That was how I was feeling before opening my kindle, that experience of a rush like no other, and I kept getting more with every page that I've read until... it was over, but let's talk about what you really want to hear, shall we?
But before that, be carerful because there are some spoilers ahead- in the last book we learned that Ema really was THE human that Jesu had the premonition about. She was the one that could defeat Apollyon, the self-appointed King. But Ema has no fighting experience so how is she supposed to kill Apollyon? That's Jesu's job: to train her so she would become the warrior they want, but who really wants for Ema to fulfill her destiny and who are her enemies?
So se is flying to Germany with Jesu so Ema can begin her training sessions and even though Ema has growing feelings for Jesu, she holds back. After all their history and all the danger they are facing, would it be wise to start something that could end badly, or even worse destroy their kind?
But Bridget offers to train Ema and to teach her their history of her kind. That's a really good thing because she can find out more and in the same time she has a pretext to keep her distance from the object of her lust...
But what you don't know is the little fact that Bridget is a old flame of Jesu. Don't worry he doesn't love her know, but she wants him back and like that old saying keep ypur friends close and your enemies...Well, Ema would learn that on the hard way when she flat out rejects him and he turns to Bridget, she accepts him. And then Ema sees them kissing so it's safe to say that she isn't too happy about it.
With all this drama, we see some action when Apollyon comes after Ema with the help of some Zombies and Ema is seen using her powers in public. As her punishement, she must face the German vampyre King for sentencing. Now, Ema is alone, without the man she loves, because know is sure about her feelings and in so much troube that she can't find her way out. What would she do?
While I loved Ema for her courage and fiery nature, I was upset that she couldn't take a chance and give in to her attraction, more thatn that she keept rejecting Jesu, when he obviously, wanted a relationship with her...
Final Decision- do you want a book packed with romance AND action, than this one is for you. It's a book that offers a new version about the origin of the vampires- making them successors of the nephilims kind.
Loved it! This book is the second in the Ema Marx series. Just like the first in the series, Dark Heirloom, it keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, and leaves you wanting more. Can’t wait for book 3..
Is Ema ever going to get a break? I’m sure author J. D. Brown has got to bend sometime! Dark Liaison, book 2 in the Ema Marx series is carrying the tradition of dark danger, explosive action and heart-taunting romantic intrigue. Ema has resurrected her ancestor, Apollyon, not realizing the hell she is unleashing on an unsuspecting world. Now amassing his own evil supernatural army, his plans to overtake the world can come to fruition. Only one young vampire seems to be standing in his way, Ema. Trying to stay one step ahead of Apollyon and Jesu’s brother Jalmari, Ema and Jesu go into hiding, under the protection of other vampyres.
Ema may be the prophesied one, but a fighter, she is not. Enter Bridget, who befriends Ema as she trains her to protect herself. But does Bridget have her own agenda? Does it have anything to do with Jesu? Is there anyone who can be trusted to be an ally? What plans do others have for Ema? Will she be able to survive the final showdown when it comes? With her special gifts, some intense training and a lot of luck, the best odds she gets are 100-1 against that happening and she knows it. But how long can she safely hide?
No doubt about it! J. D. Brown can tell a dark and edgy tale with the best of the authors. The attention to detail is magnificent; every scene is like a 3D view of her world, and the tension? The tension spikes and spikes and spikes, and our poor trusting Ema continues to be tricked, fooled and abused, both emotionally and physically. Is it making her a stronger individual or is she beginning to crack from the pressure of this unfamiliar world? Perhaps she would just like to go back to what she knows, but surely, there is no looking back, now. Too bad the future is one big question mark for her.
Like the edgy side of vampyres and supernaturals? Like a slightly different take on the abilities and powers each clan possesses? Want the answer to: Why vampyres do not walk in the sunshine? It’s all here, all between the covers of some wonderfully intriguing reading.

Before reading Dark Liaison I revisited my review of Dark Heirloom, the first book in Brown's Ema Marx series. With the reminder of what happened previously I was able to dive right in to Dark Liaison. I had many ideas about what was coming, but I was surprised at how things actually played out.
In the last book we learned that Ema was the human that Jesu had the premonition about. She was the one that would defeat Apollyon, the self-appointed King. But Ema has no fighting experience so how is she supposed to kill Apollyon? It's up to Jesu to train her, but his love for her may get in the way.
Fleeing to Germany, Jesu and Ema begin their training sessions and even though Ema has growing feelings for Jesu she holds back. After all, through a hundred or so generations they have a mutual family relationship. But Ema can't hold out forever or can she?
When Bridget offers to train Ema she is excited beyond words. Now she can train and learn about the history of her kind. Plus, she can maintain some distance between her and Jesu.
Jesu tries time and time again to show Ema how much he loves her, but the mixed signals she sends out drives him crazy. When she flat out rejects him he turns to Bridget, and when Ema sees them kissing she isn't too happy about it.
Apollyon comes after Ema with the help of some Zombies and Ema is seen using her powers in public. Now she must face the German vampyre King for sentencing.
Finally, Ema cannot help but to fall helplessly in love with Jesu even though she thinks that he and Bridget are in love with each other. But Jesu sets the record straight. He loves HER and HER only. With his admission comes Ema's. She's in love with him. FINALLY!!
Dark Liaison flowed seamlessly from Dark Heirloom adding more adventure and more drama. It also added in a lot of mistakes that should have been caught during the editing phase. I loved the fact that Ema and Jesu are now a couple but I felt that it took a bit to long to get there. Too much time was spent on the constant rejection from Ema. I mean come on, how many times would you take it? Definitely not that long.
Finally, while others have speculated that Jesu may have suffered the true death I'm confident that he hasn't. He is a major player. He is the hero, and the hero always wins. Tell me I'm right J.D.
I am a hopeless romantic who loves her vampires, vampyers, ghosts, and werewolves. Besides that, I am vested in this series. I HAVE to see it to the end, mistakes in all. Word of advice though. Please look into getting a proofreader.
Hang on to your literary hats folks!! This book is going to be a wild thrill ride!! Brown’s newest addition the Ema Marx series is action packed and tantalizing good. With Ema’s newly risen family member stalking the earth, things are about to go bat shit crazy. Ema’s living life on the run while hell brings to fall upon the earth. She’s about to make more than one connection to her past and they not exactly be friendly.
When I thought I couldn’t fall more in love with this unique vampire plot based novel, I did. Dark Liaison takes the beautifully dark plotted world that Brown meticulously built in Dark Heirloom and sends it spinning out of control. Our brave protagonist Ema is faced with more trials and tribulations in this book than ever before. One of the best things about Dark Liaison other than its twisted dark plot is the further development of Ema as a character. She’s learning more about her ancestry, heritage, and future with every page. This book honestly in my opinion not only built upon the tension and angst for the primary plot of the story, but character growth as well. Ema begins to finally understand her part in this world.
With every turn of the page in this 400 page novel, I found myself more enamored with the world that Brown as masterfully built. It’s dark and scary yet hides just a bit of romance and happiness underneath the level of dark soot. If you scrape about just enough, you can see those moments shine. Now, I know I talked about the cliffhangers in the the previous books, but this one literally will knock you out of your chair and leave you screaming at your mode of literary enjoyment. Holy shit.. when does the next book come out!?!!?!?!?
