Ema Marx is in a race against time. Or rather, a race against Apollyon. A powerful weapon--the legendary philosopher's stone--could tip the scale in favor of whoever gets their fangs on it first. For Ema, obtaining the stone is an uphill battle through love, alliance, heartbreak, and loyalty. Winning should mean the beginning of beautiful things, but the closer Ema gets to her destiny, the more uncertain her future becomes. Could it be this war was never meant for her? And why the heck doesn't morning sickness adhere to rules of its own name?
Dark Becoming is the third book in the Ema Marx Series by J.D. Brown. The full series includes:
Athena's Oracle (book 0.5) Dark Heirloom (book 1) Dark Liaison (book 2) Dark Becoming (book 3) Dark Ascension (book 4 - coming soon)
J.D. Brown knows that vampires exist because she’s dating one and no, he doesn’t sparkle. Unfortunately, he’s not immortal either (or maybe her standards are too low). A magnet for subcultures and weirdness, J.D. was that socially awkward girl with more fictional friends than real ones. As a child battling a hearing loss and a medical condition with no name, J.D. found comfort in books where strong women always saved the day and got the guy. An obsession with Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Buffy the Vampire Slayer led J.D. to believe that her mutated chromosome made her something more, not something less. Thus her stubborn flare to persevere was born. A lover of fine cuisine, coffee, and shoes, J.D. never understood why shoe stores don’t serve Starbucks and soufflé. She resides in Wisconsin were she writes urban fantasy—aka vampires for adults—and has political debates with her dogs. She loves to hear from fans and is active on http://Facebook.com/AuthorJDBrown
Best Isometric workout, ever. J.D. Brown’s Dark Becoming is a gut-clenching, white-knuckle ride from page one to the end, just remember to breathe every once in a while. Does Apollyon’s evil know no bounds? Will Ema and Jesu ever get their HEA? Are they meant to? Must Ema make a deal that will crush her soul to protect those she loves in order to defeat Apollyon? What of her baby? Anyone who has lived through 24/7 morning sickness knows, this is NOT what Ema needs right now when the final a battle may be imminent. Will facing Apollyon for the third time be the charm that ends his reign of terror? Will the Philosopher’s Stone work its magic for Ema? Heroes will fall in an epic battle of good vs evil. Who can Ema trust? How is she constantly deceived? Is this the final battle against Apollyon or just the tip of a new iceberg of pain? New alliances are formed, but to what end? Will Jalmari continue to be his father’s puppet or will someone else pull his strings?
I need a nap, an emotional nap. J.D. Brown has kept this series running at top speed while taking us around dangerous curves, dark tunnels and bloody carnage, all because this author can write! This isn't a stroll on the dark side of the paranormal, this is a trip through the ultimate house of horrors where even one’s own reflection cannot be trusted to be real. Strong and vividly detailed scenes will place you in the moment, with gag-worthy sights, sounds and smells as this tale unfolds at breakneck speed. Like to live life on the edge surrounded by the good, the bad and the secrets of the supernatural world? J. D. Brown has your ticket ready and it’s called the Ema Marx Series.
I received this copy from the author as part of the Dark Becoming Tour stopping at Tome Tender March 1, 2015. Stop by, if you dare.
Series: Ema Marx - Book 3 Publication Date: February 24, 2015 Publisher: MuseItUp Publishing Genre: Paranormal|Urban Fantasy Print Length: 372 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble Reviewed for: http://tometender.blogspot.com
WOW! I think I was holding my breath through the entire book until the ending!!! As Ema and Jesu work with the Alpan crown to devise a way to defeat the evil Apollyon it seems like everything is working against them including Jesu's own brother prince Jalmari.
Tensions run high through the entire book as more and more is revealed but it's when everything comes to a head in the end that things start to make sense. And those things certainly don't bode well for Ema and her future. She definitely has a lot to learn if she wants to survive. Her insecurities and refusal to be honest with Jesu over and over again drove me a little crazy. Not to mention that her hesitation cost lives but in the end she pulled it together to get the mission accomplished ... at least for now. The characters are very well done in particular the incubus Valafar. More than once he had me chuckling out loud at his cocky smartass antics. I don't know if he will end up being good or bad but right now he is my favorite character and I absolutely love every scene he is in. He is definitely mixed in with a bad crowd but I hope by the end of the series he finds some redemption. And the ongoing strain between Ema, Jesu, and Jalmari definitely kept me on my toes until the very end. With the fate of the world and the lives of everyone she loves resting on her shoulders Ema has some serious growing up to do in order to handle that burden. I for one can't wait to see what happens next and in my opinion Dark Becoming is Absolutely recommended!
From book one to book two and now book three and I'm still questioning how JD Brown put this book together; and how MJ Webb is able to remember all the individual voices in her head, although I'm sure she doesn't and it's all there on some kind of recording desk in a very professional manner!
But I digress ... I can't remember a series of books, based on a 'family' of characters that has kept me this enthralled, EVER! It is literally putting me off my work whilst I listen to the audiobook! The evocative writings of JD Brown read by the liquid tones of MJ Webb just drags me into the secretive world where no one sleeps. I became so invested in the story that I was writing in my head before MJ Webb told me what was happening; I could see the action happening and knew who to trust and who should be cut loose!
As with the previous two books this one moves with great pace the characters are amazing and varied and we have our main female in Ema Marx and she is taking this fight to it's maker, she has a supporting cast of characters who have been brought forth from I know not where in JD Brown's brain! I've called them amazing and varied but that doesn't even nearly cover it. Characters of epic proportions; an extravaganza of eccentrics; oddities beyond that which even PT Barnham could envisage!! But it is not just the characters, JD Brown has created a whole world for them to live in. From palaces, to night clubs, to the circus, to hotels, private jets, alliances with humans; it's all be thought out and planned so diligently I couldn't find a chink in the armour.
But book 3 came to a surprising end and I need book 4 like a fix so MJ Webb needs to start recording soon, if she hasn't already.
If you haven't listened to these books read by MJ Webb you need to get yourself an audio version right now and sit back and relax. xx
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and provide my honest review voluntarily
The shot flew past Ema’s face, just missing her but hitting Jesu in the throat. He toppled over the ledge and fell to the floor of the barn. Hastening down the ladder to Jesu, she was ripped from the rungs and a man sat across her stomach while he began squeezing and cutting into her neck to decapitate her! She recognized Jalmari’s attack style. He levitated them, blades still embedded in her neck, through the roof to escape the soldiers; as her vision darkened, she did a partial shift and surprised him with her huge, powerful wings. The extra strength allowed her to attack him and he disappeared as he phased.
Once again, he reappeared and came at her with blades. She shifted her head into a wolf which startled him enough that she could grab him and threw him to the outer wall of the barn. The Alpan soldiers from the castle then stunned him with a taser and applied electronic cuffs to his wrists. Ema returned to the barn but Jesu was gone and she raced to the castle to find him.
I absolutely love it when a book starts out deep into the wild action, guns a-blazin’ and everything happening at once! This is definitely one of those books! Fast-paced and full of suspense, the reader will love it! The roller coaster ride never stops! Twists and turns keep the reader constantly guessing as to what will happen next! As additional characters are introduced, you’ll either love them or hate them. There seems to be no boring bodies anywhere! This story line continues from previous books, and I assure you, it’s addictive! Grab a copy and enjoy a well written story that is well worth your time!
This late in the game there's no point in me holding back on details. Too many have been put into reviews already. But that's ok. I can still tell you that this is quickly becoming one of the more inventive and intense vampire dramas I've read in a very long time.
Ema and Jesu are deep in the thick of it now, and in an unusual twist of a storyline, Ema is caught up in completing tasks put forth to her in return for a contract of protection from King Nikolas. And she needs it. So many people want her dead, and all while she's pregnant and suffering the most bizarre case of morning sickness I've heard of! She has enemies wanting her babies dead, wanting her dead, wanting her boyfriend/"just friends" guy dead. Poor girl is a walking target. And poor Jesu hasn't a clue how to help her, protect her, and date her when she keeps pushing him away.
I am lucky enough to be reading these books one after the other, no break waiting for the author to finish the next volume. This makes it easier to feel the flow, yet harder to stop and write a review when all you want is to get to the next one. So, let me just say that this series is unusual, inventive, and fun to read while also being intense and uncertain. It has kept my interest to a point of lost sleep, which for me is giving a book high praise (I value my sleep!).
Excellent going, Jen! I'm having a great time reading Ema's story, and getting to do it with no break! Best way to read a series. And...moving on to Dark Ascension!
It’s been a while since I was last immersed in this world, but I opened this book and was immediately pulled right back into the thick of it. This is a twisty devious little plot that leaves you guessing from the get-go and doesn’t even let up in the end. Are Ema’s allies truly her allies or are they merely enemies in disguise? My heart hurts watching Ema try to find the balance point in her relationship with Jesu, as she waffles back and forth between doubt and certainty in his love for her. And during this, she has to master new alchemical magic, figure out how to protect the people she loves the most, including the new life she’s carrying, and carry out a master plan to stop the mad evil king. It’s just another day in the life of Ema Marx, right? I received a complimentary copy of this book.
This is my favourite book in the series so far. It is full of so much juiciness and amazing characters,it is hard to not share spoilers. Book 1 and 2 were good but here you can see JD Brown has stepped up her game.
Here is a little word on each of the characters that stood out for me:
Sure there were sometimes when Ema and Jesu annoyed me with their all over the place romance. I do love how Ema is growing as a character, even if I can't agree with all her decisions. Jesu is just Jesu. I love him sooooo much!
Bridget.. I loved her, then couldn't stand her, then felt sorry for her and finally kinda unsure in general - love makes you do weird things, but rejection can make you a little bit crazy.
Valafar... I must say he is a bit of a favourite of mine but so is King Nikolas but in different ways and for different reasons.
Maria - I am not sure how to feel about Maria. I love her to pieces but there were some comments from other characters that have made me kind of be wary. I am hoping this will be cleared up once I start book 4.
Jalmari - sigh I kinda love to hate him and hate to love him.
Really can't wait to see where the story goes and how it grows!!
Awesome job JD. Thanks for writing such an amazing story <3
Phew! What a ride! So much action! I’m not gonna lie, I kinda wanted to slap Ema a few times and tell her to just stop lying to Jesu and just tell him what she’s feeling, but I guess that wouldn’t make much of a story 😂
I love that the author keeps introducing a few new characters in each story instead of just following all of the same characters from the first two books. This time the story is split between Ema and Bridget’s POVs. I’m hoping one of the next books has Jesu’s POV because he’s my favorite character. I also love the exotic locations that they go to.
This one ended with a few surprises, but not as brutal of a cliffhanger as the last one. I wish I hadn’t read the spin-off series before this one, because I know some of what’s supposed to happen next, but I’m still excited to watch it unfold.
I am a huge fan of Kick ass female hero stories. Ema kicked ASS in the last book. But this one lost me a bit. I am going to assume that her condition in this book is has a lot to do with it. But dang, I just wanted to yell at her to be be grateful!
Now Jesu has my heart. He doesn’t let himself get walked all over. I think that’s one of my favorite things about him. It’s not all about making her happy. His happiness is important too.
I listened to this on audible. Once again, the narrator, MJ Webb really makes the book. Her accents are killer and the difference in each character... dang it’s hard to believe that it is just one person reading.
Ema Marx, can’t say enough good things about her and how she has been portrayed throughout this series. There are a couple characters here that I’d like to slap a couple hundred times though. Bridget would be high on my list. She needed to get a clue way before now where Jesu and Ema are concerned. Then you have Jalmari and is he off the shelf. If not for him attacking Ema to start with she might never be in the middle of all this. J.D. Brown has definitely caught my interest with her series. Spellbinding work!
This story starts with crazy action and continues that way...with crazy and action! What struck me the most as I read this book is that the characters are written with such true-to-life human traits. I related with my whole self because their feelings and emotions were mine. Insecurity, hate, love, wonder, strength... This story engaged me and wouldn't let go.
(I read this on KU when it was available on that program)
Dark Becoming continues the story of Ema, Jesu and Apollyon, right where Dark Liason left off. Between the fast pace, the back and forth banter and the love and relationships - I found myself yelling at the characters as I read! Lol. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, everything changes. But the relationships built between all of the vampires and vampyres continues to be my favorite part of these books. I can’t wait to read the next book!
The things Apollyon does in this series are twisted and he continued with his twisted ways in this book. I am curious what is going to happen next. Ema has made things a bit more difficult for him but I bet he has a plan. I am looking forward to the next book to see what he does next.
These books just keep getting better and better. I hope nothing happens to Ema everyone seems to be after her. I can't wait to start the next one. But it's the last one I have and have not found anymore in the series.
https://www.goodreads.com/?ref=nav_home So far, this was my favorite of the three books. You can tell MJ Webb has a theater background. I listened to this book on Audible. She brings life to each character with voice changes. Not your typical vampire book at all.
Someone compared this author to Kate Daniels and mercy Thompson. No way. I read both of those and they are so much better without the gross and gut wrenching sensationalism
I absolutely adore this series. It had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Just when you think that Ema has finally succeeded, another level of the plot appears! It's very fast paced, very well written and constructed, for anyone who likes paranormal stories, this is a real winner.
This series just keeps getting better and better. I am absolutely in love with it! It's a superb urban fantasy book. This is my favorite genre and I believe this series belongs at the top with the greats like Mercy Thompson and others.
Ema is such a wonderful lead character. She is flawed, but in a way we can all relate to. And the other cast of characters will make you laugh, yell, feel love, feel hate. There is plenty of action. There is love, but is it really love? There is betrayal. I can't say it enough, just a great book in a great series. I want it to last forever!
Title: Dark Becoming (An Ema Marx Novel Book 3) Author: J.D. Brown Published By: NightMare Publishing Publication Date: July 20, 2015 Pages: 313 Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance Source: Given by the author in return for an honest review. Stars: 5 out of 5
Oh my goodness, what can I say. Dark Becoming has to be the best book of the series so far. There were so many twist and turns that I thought things were going one way when they indeed were going a totally different direction.
The book picks up right where Dark Liaison stopped. After I read Dark Liaison I read Athena’s Oracle. Athena’s Oracle made me kind of like Jalmari, the audience got to see a different side to Jalmari, a side that would suggest that he wasn’t as horrible as a person as he makes himself out to be. However, within seconds of Dark Becoming, this book will have you hating his guts yet again. In Dark Becoming, there were a couple scenes that would make you think, “Hey, maybe Jalmari could come around.” Nope! At the very last second, he shows his true colors and how untrustworthy and evil he truly is. Even though I can understand why he wants to do what he wants to do to a certain degree, it’s still evil and incomprehensible.
Ema and Jesu’s relationship goes through a few battles. Which is heartbreaking for us who love the two being a couple. Ema is having a hard time in this book trying to accept and deal with her new revelation, along with trying to take down Apollyon and dealing with her rocky relationship with Jesu. And don’t even get me started on Bridget, she really needs to learn to grow up and get over her and Jesu.
All in all, I really loved this book and could hardly put it down. This series has really surprised me in a good way. The first time I picked up the first book I didn’t think the current of events would lead us to where we are now. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book and to see what the future of this series brings us. J.D. Brown really knows how to write an amazing series that hooks you from the very beginning. If you haven’t already read the previous books of this series, I truly recommend you check them out. You will not be disappointed.

This series just honestly keeps getting better and better. As emotionally charged and thrilling as Dark Liaison was with its deliciously dark twisted plot, Dark Becoming kicks it up another notch. Ema has faced so many obstacles with the prophecy that has loomed over her head since far before her birth. She’s managed to bring the one person back from the dead who will literally rains hell on earth. The only way to fix the mistake she’s made is to lay her life and soul on the line to save the people she loves and the world. But, there are things about this deal that will make you cringe. It’s not just about her anymore and she’s about to make the biggest decision/disastrous deal in her life.
There were moments in this book that I thought to myself as my heart pounded almost out of my chest and the tears rolled down my face whether or not I could literally continue the physical and emotional reactions I was getting from reading Dark Becoming. Never before has a book threatened my physical health. I was so wrapped up in this book that at times I forgot to eat and would forego sleep just to read. My poor husband even missed a meal because I wasn’t about to put this book down before I finished it. For a book to physically manifest feelings of pain, hurt, and disgust marvels me even days after I’ve finished it. This book isn’t just words written on a page, but an emotional sensation packed ride through a fictional literary tale. Even know thinking about this book brings on emotions. This isn’t a book, but an experience for readers. Brown’s series has literally taken the paranormal literature world by its head and tossed it years into the future of literature and writing. This book is so well before its time that I think anyone who hasn’t read this series and book yet are missing out on what could be one the best reading experiences of 2015!!!
I have been looking so forward to this book ever since i devoured DARK LIASONS. This is the continuing story of Ema, Jesu . Jalmari and the rest . The story picks up where Dark Liason left off. Ema and Jesu in the thick of things yet again. We are still at King Nicolas's castle where we get introduced to more characters, We get to know them pretty more in depth. You will love them or hate them but trust me you will never think of chocolate in the same way again. You will understand when you read. And bathroom sex will never be the same either. Again read the book to understand. Also you will really want to slap Bridget all the way through this book. She really annoyed me, J.D takes us on some twists and turns in this book and i loved every one of them. From Ema 's pregnancy nightmare to the lovely date night . The scary moments of broken hearts and big battles . There is some thing in this book for everyone. There is a twist at the end that made me go OH MY GOD and shake my head . It will blow you away. The author just gets better and better with each book that she writes . So if you want a great book that will keep you reading late into the night check it out . I know you won't be disappointed
well i had nothing better to do today with it raining all day...so thought i would just read a chapter or two...damn you j.d brown i got suckered into it and couldnt put the book down
so much happened...the book starts right from where book two finished and it went from there...so at least you find out what happens to jesu....
so much happens ... ema can get a bit annoying with her do i trust jesu or not and there are fun moments for all..a trip to italy, breaking a sink or two...chocolate smells..pregnancy related incidents...(i remember evening sickness so well i can sympathise with what ema is going through) incubus and crones, bridget realising her love for jesu is not reciprocated and her feeling for ema she nearly destroys everything with her jealousy and then when she hears what jesu brother has done her remorse but is it to late to help and save the day...she tries...
it all builds to a massive climatic end with loads of deaths and a main character dying and you are left reeling from it all
i am still in shock from it all and then the ending...oh you are so nasty j.d brown to leave us like that knowing what we all know and what should happen.....
roll on the next book think i will go and watch some tv i need a rest from that book
I am truly enjoying this series! This is the third book in the Ema Marx series and by now I'm starting to get to know the characters quite well. It's like meeting up with old friends. And, like with some old friends, I find I'm getting a little frustrated with some of their quirks. Ema's insistence on secrecy and not sharing her decisions is starting to annoy me just as much as it is annoying Jesu. Which in my opinion, is a sign of a good book with thoroughly relatable characters. On the plus side, I enjoyed seeing (reading?) Jesu making a stand and not putting up with her nonsense anymore.
I struggled a bit towards the end of this one, due to the description of the military operation. After saying that, there was a damn good twist at the end, which I did not see coming. All in all, a fine book with an interesting story and a good teaser for the next one.
Wow! J. D. Brown has created another book that you can’t put down. You can’t stop reading. You have to turn each page because you’re mesmerized by characters, descriptions and the action that is taking place. Sizzle, unexpected twists, action abound in the third Ema Marx book. Jesu and Ema must find their way in their journey to end the terror of Jesu and Jalmari’s father. Ema knows that she’s not the “one” from Jesu’s premonitions and doubt fills her; doubts about her role in this fight, doubts about being pregnant, doubts about the love of her life. She’s got her hands full trying to figure out who to trust. Dark Becoming leaves you hanging on. I hope it won’t be too long before Ema Marx book 4 comes out!
Once again J.D. Brown brings us back to Ema's world and what a complicated, devious world it is. Written wonderfully, fast paced with not a moment of down play it took every effort I had to not read through the night and take my time to absorb the story.
Ema's life with Jesu and the pregnancy just gets more and more complicated. Bridget showing her true colours, green of course, really manages to put a dent in the relationship by convincing Ema that there is no way that Jesu could love her freely. Leena's legacy comes back in good and bad, a twist the Incubus and his allegiances and Ema's decision to contract with the Alpan kin all make pletty of plot twists and turns. Loving this series and can't wait for the next one.
