How to Read Paintings

How to Read Paintings is a valuable visual guide to Western European painting. Through a gallery of artworks accompanied by informative commentary, it enables readers to swiftly develop their understanding of the grammar and vocabulary of painting, and to discover how to look at diverse paintings in detail, closely reading their meanings and methods.

In the first part of the book, the Grammar of Paintings, the author reveals how to read paintings by considering five key areas: shape and support, medium and materials, composition, style and technique, and signs and symbols, as well as the role of the artist. In the second part, we explore fifty paintings through extracted details, accompanied by insightful commentary, training the reader and viewer to understand context and discover meaning within art.

As a collection, the pictures featured in How to Read Paintings have a strong relationship with one another, and underpin the story of painting. This book will be a valuable tool whether you are viewing the real thing on a gallery wall, or simply reading around the subject to learn more about Western art.

Bir süredir oldukça ilgimi çeken sanat, sanat tarihi ve sanat eserlerini incelemeye dair en son kütüphaneden ödünç aldığım kitabın yorumuyla merhabalar! İlk okuduğum Sanat Kitabı'nda resimlerin hiç fark etmediğim detaylarını okudukça çok keyif alıyordum ve adeta ufkum genişliyordu. Bu kitapsa tam anlamıyla birçok ünlü ressamın elinden çıkma resimlerin nasıl okunduğuna dair bilgilerle dolu. Daha öncesinde de dikkatle incelediğim birkaç resmin bu kitapta daha detaylı bir şekilde okuyor olmak sanata dair bilgime birçok şey kattı. Ayrıca okuması gerçekten çok keyifli, kısacık bir kitaptı. Kitabımız portre, manzara, öyküleme, natürmort ve soyut olarak resimleri inceliyor. Hepsini incelemek ve sanata dair kafamda bir şeyleri daha da yerine oturtmak çok güzeldi. Bu tarz kitapları ne kadar çok bulursam o kadar okumaya çalışıyorum. Sizin de ilginizi çektiyse keyifli okumalar dilerim..

Kitapta pek çok sanatçıya ve tabloya yer verilmiş ve bilinirlik açısından çeşitlilik sağlanmış diye düşünüyorum. Resme giriş niteliğinde çok kapsamlı olmayan buna rağmen birtakım meraklarınızı giderebileceğiniz bir çalışma olmuş diyebilirim. Portre, Manzara, Öyküleme, Natürmort ve Soyut başlıkları altında beş bölümde teker teker seçilen tablolar detayları ile incelenmiş.

I was going to give this book 4 stars but I've been thinking why not 5 if there is nothing I didn't like about it? ...Yes, It would have been better if the book was bigger so we could appreciated more, but the size is not too bad.

Further than that, I just think it's a great collection of paintings with very understandable critics and commentaries. I liked it is timed, I mean you start from really old paintings and it goes evolving until the most modern arts.

It contains amazing pictures, very curious info about the painters and some interesting zoom to some of their works. My favourite chapter was the one of Self-portraits but, I liked them all anyways: landscape, narrative, still life and abstract.
.... I wish I could keep a record here of my favourite paintings so I would never forget. :(

I've also been searching about Liz Rideal, the author of this book and I just loved her work! She seems so talented and cultivated. I've also added some of her books in my want-to-read-shelf....

Another one of my bedside books, which I’ve been dipping into a couple of pages at a time. Has it made me able to better read paintings? Well not really, unless you count the ones covered in the book. However it’s given me some food for thought to be fair.

It gives a general overview of the meaning behind some popular paintings, analyzing technique, medium, and format. It’s a bit surface level in the sense that it doesn’t dive too deeply into any of the paintings, which I didn’t like.

Great wee book - a fair amount of information and a lot of paintings crammed between its covers, only some of which are familiar. While it's necessarily constrained by its size, and and really only skims the surface as it gallops along, its great virtue is the insights it serves up in bite sized chunks, together with a portability that means it can be carried around even when there's maybe only time to read a few pages. It also frequently inspires you to lament its size limitations and yearn for larger scale representations of the paintings being discussed... preferably in 3D so you can fully appreciate the techniques involved in building up the layers of the painting being discussed ... but that's not really a criticism, more a tribute to the quality of writing and editorial choices of the art it features that makes you yearn to see the real thing. Not perfect, as it doesn't quite live up to its title, but still recommended.

El análisis que se hace de las obras es breve pero interesante y conciso. Me gustó que se hacen comentarios sobre ciertas zonas y detalles de las pinturas. Asimismo el orden en el que esta dividido el libro me pareció bueno, desde los retratos hasta la abstracción. Lo único malo sería el tamaño de las imágenes que son demasiado pequeñas y que dificulta que se puedan apreciar las pinceladas, a excepción de algunas obras como el pastel de Thiebaud en los acercamientos se aprecian muy bien las pinceladas.

Cuốn này đã được xuất bản tiếng Việt với tên "Đọc hiểu tác phẩm hội họa" của Omega+
Cá nhân mình thấy thì về hình thức khá tốt, giấy giống như giấy in tạp chí thời trang nhưng mỏng hơn, in màu toàn bộ, chỉ có điều là chữ khá nhỏ, dàn trang bị trống khá nhiều.
Về nội dung thì mình đọc thấy không hấp dẫn. Việc phân tích các tác phẩm hội họa thì vẫn có nhưng nó khá nông, không có đi sâu. Sách tầm 230 trang mà phân tích hơn 50 tác phẩm thì các bạn cũng hiểu là chỉ cưỡi ngựa xem hoa thôi.

The pages are too small to really appreciate the artworks. Quite possibly there's a version with larger pages, but I don't know why they even printed one that was so small. The descriptions are glib. More generally, getting obsessed with individual artists and reading biographies and watching talks about them seems to be a better strategy than reading these introductory books.

This was alright, more like a painting followed by an explanation type structure. I was hoping for a more in-depth analysis of art movements over the centuries and the distinguishing factors of them, there was not any kind of comparative points between anything really

Liz Rideal, University College London, Slade School of Fine Art’ın Resim bölümünde güzel sanatlar okutmanı olarak çalışan ve aynı zamanda kendisi de sanatçı olan bir yazar. Yazarın sanat üzerine pek çok kitabı var fakat bildiğim kadarıyla “Resimler Nasıl Okunur?” yazarın Türkçeye çevrilmiş tek kitabı.

Kitap, bir tabloyu algılamak için başlıca bilinmesi gereken temel noktalara değinmiş. İlk bölümde resmin temel öğelerini oluşturan şekil ve resim yüzeyi, boya ve malzemeler, kompozisyon, üslup ve teknik, işaretler ve semboller ve sanatçı gibi konuların kısa bir özeti yer alıyor. Bilgiler güzel fakat bu bölüme eleştirim işaretler ve semboller kısmının fazla yüzeysel kalmış olması. Bana göre bir resmi anlamak için öncelikle bu bölümün iyice anlaşılması gerekiyor.

İkinci bölümde ise Portre, manzara, öyküleme, natürmort ve soyut başlıkları altında Dürer, Van Dyck, Velazquez, Klimt, Dix, Friedrich, El Greco, Degas, Cezanne, Weyden, Millais, Manet, Van Gogh, Monet, Matisse, Kooning ve daha birçok ünlü ressamın fırçasından çıkmış, Batı Avrupa geleneğinde yer alan 50 önemli sanat eseri yakın mercek altında incelenmiş. Bu eserlerin içinde resimlerin önem arz eden bölümlerini incelememizi sağlayan yakınlaştırılmış, detaylı görsellere ve kısa analizlere yer verilmiş. Tüm bunlara ek olarak kitabın sonundaki sözlük ile bilinmesi gereken teknik kavramlar kısaca özetlenmiş. Ayrıca baskı kalitesini de çok beğendiğimi söylemeliyim.

Okuması çok keyifli, ve içeriğiyle gerçekten kısa ve öz bilgiler içeren bir rehber. Sanata yeni yeni ilgi duymaya başlayanlar için eğlenceli bir okuma.

Really enjoyed this - my only criticism would be the small size, which makes it difficult to see the paintings in their full glory.

Quick and enjoyable, even though it can seem a bit oversimplified or obvious sometimes if you already know a name or two from art history. Also, it's just not fair to produce a carefully written art book and use such a heavy-handed cover and layout.
