I never thought I would say that about a Light Novel, but this volume wraps up a story arc pretty good.
Many Light Novels feel clunky and rushed and unreasonable when ending a story arc that - until then - had been more of a frame for a chain of events than a real plot. But this third volume manages to wrap up the Zolgear-Arc in a really good way. Compared to the previous two volumes, this book treads lightly on the ecchi-stuff and focuses more on action, plot and character development. No serious, there is character developement in this action-ecchi-story, when you are inclined to see the character development in its own boundaries. Of course you can't find Rothfuss-like characters in this anime-styled story, but the characters are developed rather good in their own limitations. Between Yuki, Basara and Mio the before somewhat laughable teenagerlike affection, that was more physical than based on love, turns more and more into a real relationship with real emotions, which is more than I hoped to find in a series like this.
What I really like about this series is that, different than in other light Novels, the girls are not just damsels in distress, but are able to kick some serious ass when they only get the chance to do so - but, don't fool yourself, the main action focus is of course on Basara, and oh god, he really is able to take quiet a bit. It felt like this whole volume was just people beating the crap out of our protagonist, which than again, is used to show his determination and strenght, but came a bit unnecessary sometimes.
It seems like in every volume we get a teaser of just how awesome Jin is. This volume is no exception and ends with Jin being a badass on political terms. I'm kind of hyped for him, which I seldom was for any character in any form of media.
Though only 4 stars this time, because the middle of the book really drags along and could have been wrapped up better, but Light Novel publishing houses are a bit picky when it comes to page counts, so maybe that's not the author's fault.
