Understanding Sound

Rate this book
In this book, students see the scientific method at work in a real-world situation. Readers practice close reading as they look for clues that will lead to a deeper understanding of sound and engineering. The scientific method pushes students to apply critical thinking as they learn new methods of exploration and build on concepts they may already know. Additional tools, including a glossary and index, help students learn new vocabulary and locate information.

I liked this different approach to teaching students about sound. As Mr. Hooper dithers about the sound quality of the cafeteria where the school talent show will be held, Lilly, Marshall, and Henry think they have little to offer since they don't have musical talent. But as it turns out, their work backstage will be just as important. When a friend of their teacher shares her expertise, they learn about the importance of acoustics. Later, they experiment in the classroom to see what happens when they place a rug on the floor, add curtains, and cover other surfaces. The book concludes with a glossary section containing the important vocabulary terms associated with sound and a cautionary note about the importance of the hair cells in the inner ear that can be destroyed due to loud noises. The book should keep young scientists interested and maybe prompt them to conduct their own experiments.
