BENJAMIN WAVERLEY, second son of the Duke of Townsend, knew he’d never marry. How could he? The moment some unsuspecting female took his name, the world might find out the despicable secret his family had been keeping and he’d be ruined. As far as he was concerned, his lot was cast. He would play the rake and that would be that. Until his father forced his hand in a marriage he knew would destroy not only him but his brilliant and beautiful bride. LADY RACHAEL NEWTON, daughter of the Earl of Kendrick, refused Benjamin Waverley’s proposal not once but twice. He’d never have offered for her hand if he’d known the secret she kept from the entire world. Even her parents didn’t know. Two people forced to marry against their will. Both holding secrets that could jeopardize their relationship. To make matters worse, Rachel was ruined and spurned by society. Ben was a rake and had recently survived a duel with an angry husband. On this infertile soil, friendship and love insisted to grow. Some parts of the plot are quite hard to believe, but it does not take the joy of the story.
Five stars...This family has some serious problems... But they are a family, lots of tears (even the men) and hugs..But the secrets Rachael had them, they were minor in comparison to Ben and his crazy mother.. It was good but as the story continues to book 3... I pray it's the end, cause I thought it was over in this book obviously I was wrong.
Benjamin is one of the best type of man. I was happy that he decided to make the most of his marriage even though he was against it at first. He stood up and took on his responsibility to his wife and never disappointed. He decided that he had had enough of a wild life and wanted to settle down. The only part that was a little far fetched is the fact that he was Claire's father. However the way Laura Landon wrote it was believable and she convinced me. I would highly recommend this series of books.
Rachel, wallflower, bedded by man at party. Party guest find out and she is ruined. Bob has a duel with husband of wife he bedded. Bob's father makes him marry Rachel. They are happy together. Bob finds out that Rachel had a baby and that he is possibly the father. Bob's mother, a murderer kidnaps baby Clara, but they get her back. Did Mother kill herself or was she killed by her daughter. Pleasant audible.
As I read reviews, even the one that had all the spoilers in it, I was enthralled with the descriptions. I really like this author. Again, this was a great read. I'm can't wait to read the next one. Ms. Landon has a great talent. She can write a romance without all the unneeded detailed descriptions and make you fall in love with her characters. Then, entwine them in a great mystery. Thank you again for a great novel!!
Benjamin has vowed not to marry following the revelations of the first book.
However, circumstances force him into a marriage of “inconvenience” with Rachel (who has significant secrets of her own).
When a threat from Ben’s past comes back to cast a shadow over what is developing into a loving marriage can these two, with the help of the rest of his family overcome what may destroy everything they have managed to create together?
I have liked the first book of this series with some caveat but I unreservedly enjoyed this second instalment.
A cultivated but ruined h (who is not a scientist and does not want to open/maintain/inherit a business 👍🏻👏🏻) and a rake, a secret child with a twist in the paternity, a bit of mistery and action.
It could have been 5 stars but I detracted 1 because following a certain plot twist I expect the H to apologise but he did not .
Throughly enjoyed this book. It had its twists and turns but again I had guessed some answers before were revealed. It was fun finding out that I was correct. Now I can't wait to see what kind trouble Lady Winifred gets into. Will the detective be a good or bad omen?
For a man bent on ruin he gave in very quickly as did she . No mystery no conflict. The rest of the plot was expected even the "surprise"ending. I was disappointed. It was well written but It be story has to have more than well written phrases.
Such a lovely story...... I will purchase some more books by this author.. She could have extended the story more by writing more about Ben and Rachael ... expanded the mystery more.....
Thoroughly enjoyed this 2nd book in the series! The series is addictive and so well written! As usual, I also bought the audiobook and must praise the narrator. Laura Landon is always on the top of my list! Fantastic 😍
What an excellent story with great characters and a fantastic plot. The pacing grabbed me from the first page to the last. What twist in the plot, one that was so unique. The ending is also perfect. I can't wait to read the next one in this series.Happy ☺reading 📚!
If you've read the first book in this series, then you must read this one as it's just as good as the first one. Such a page turner, Ben getting married, falling in love, good romance and drama and something I didn't see coming! Next book please😉
I loved this book. It is well written and has everything Insanity, Betrayal, Scandals, Family Love, secrets and Romance . Two people pushed together each with their own secrets 5 stars a must read can't wait to read the next book in this series
A secret surprisingly kept from the ton, one woman finds herself forced to marry as her shame has kept suitors at bay. Maybe love can be found with two outcasts.
If you are looking for a good Regency romance read, this is one you have to check out. There is a little mystery and lots of sparks both good and bad between the two main characters. I especially loved how the author didn’t reveal to the reader what the secret was though I had a good idea. It was very well done.
The characters had a lot of spunk, and I was drawn to them quickly though I have to admit the man was a heel at first. Selfish, but then again that was why his father force him to settle down. Best thing for him.
Very good writing. I’ll be checking in on this author to read more.
Note: I purchased this book with my own funds with no expectation of a positive review.
It's like the author read my review of her first book and made the necessary improvements to this installment! I enjoyed the love story in Cast in Shadows so much that I wasn't sure I would be able to enjoy this book; boy, was I wrong. Landon outdid herself with Cast in Ruin. The two characters were perfect for each other (a little too perfect, but this is a novel so I don't expect reality), but also faced terrifying obstacles to their happiness. The romance was fabulous and there were no plot mistakes like there were with the first book. My only complaint is that I wanted to see more of Gideon and Eve (from Cast in Shadows), and I wanted the book to be longer. But I am anxiously awaiting the third installment thanks to the teaser at the end!!!
At first, I thought this book was going to be very predictable, which I'm not a fan of (is anyone, really?) but, I was very surprised by the events in the book. It rolled along well enough to for the first 60%, where I could put it down if I needed to, but after that and especially the final pages, there was no putting it down.
I liked book one, but book two was so much better. I liked Benjamin in book one and think Rachael made him a perfect wife. Together their story was fast paced and full of intrigue. I am very much looking forward to book 3. This book can be read alone, but I recommend it as a series.
