Unmistakably Chinese, Genuinely Malaysian

Rate this book
Written by Rita Sim, this comprehensive and easy to read book explores how the Chinese diaspora in Malaysia is not properly understood – as outsiders we assume that all Chinese are the same, but that is not the case. A huge multi-layered gap exists in the community between the English-literate and the Chinese-literate, and Rita explains the particular nuances that make them all different.

In the foreword, Rita writes: “This study is not meant to belittle or oversimplify an obviously complex subject, or to stereotype any part of the community. For every example there is an exception; and for every day that passes, the community evolves and grows. This study is therefore a small contribution to a subject matter that is at once massive and diverse.

“What I hope to do here is not to pigeonhole the community into convenient distinctions, but rather to share some of the understanding and the vocabulary that I have developed in the course of my self-directed study on the Chinese in Malaysia.”

A very well researched and written book. I recommend this to advertisers and media planners because this book provides insights that will help you to strategize better in reaching out to the Chinese in Malaysia.
