A kid commits suicide as a direct result of bullying once every half-hour. This is something that Mercy Hartwell knows, but it doesn’t impact her life until her brother, Corey nearly becomes a statistic.
On a Monday morning in small town Iowa, a harmless school assembly about bullying takes an unexpected turn and becomes a hostage situation. With a captive audience and a small arsenal, Mercy and her friends conduct a trial with themselves as judges, jury and executioners. They’re willing to risk everything for their one chance at vengeance. In their courtroom, anyone can accuse anyone of anything as long as they’re willing to tell their horrible story in front of the class.
The only verdict is guilty.
The only punishment is death.
Those who survive will have a whole new reason to hate Mondays.
J.L. Aarne currently lives in the Northwest United States. She was born in Washington, but she has moved around a lot and lived in many other places. She has two cats, Jack and Wally, and she is a compulsive collector of notebooks and coffee mugs, which she drinks tea out of. Aarne studied English and literature at the University of New Orleans. Her favorite fictional characters always seem to be the villains.
Decided to review because one of the other 2 reviews was postulating about why the book was given so many 3 star reviews. Their reasoning is NOT why I gave this book three stars.
I can't remember how to do the spoiler tag thing...
The main thing I liked about it was the premise of calling the bullies down to have there misdeeds laid out for the rest of the school and then be killed. It was very pleasing to me and I felt powerful reading it and imaging the same thing being done to my former bullies.
The reasons why I gave it three stars instead of 4 or five is that the jump from Corey being in the hospital was hard to follow. It seemed like the next day they were going to the school. I also didn't like how they switched to knives and the kids readily went along with it. Also I did not like the ending if the book... I didn't think Mercy should escape. Finally, there wasn't much explained with what went on with Jesse. The very end seemed like there was more between them then the one kiss.
What and extraordinary book to have read as it is the first for me from this author!!
I read this book in one sitting. It is quite suspenseful and full of intrigue. The characters and their issues were absolutely phenomenally and successful portrayed.
