Safekeeping: Romance, Mystery, and Suspense with a Dash of Austen

Rate this book
A woman awakens in a hospital room, surrounded by strangers. The car accident responsible for her injuries is a blur. Her mind is a blank slate.

The name on her driver’s license reads Elizabeth Becket, but that doesn't feel right. Her college application claims she’s a writer—are her frequent nightmares a story conjured up in her imagination or could they be memories of her former life?

The only thing she knows for sure is that an urgent sense of danger looms over her.

Irresistibly drawn to a man she has just met, Fitz Darcy, her soul longs to trust him. But should she?

A contemporary mystery romance with a clever nod to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

No graphic love scenes.

Wendi Sotis lives on Long Island, NY, with her husband and triplets. Years ago, while searching for Pride and Prejudice from Darcy’s point of view, she became thoroughly enamored with Jane Austen Fan Fiction or JAFF. In early 2010, she dreamed an idea for a story and hasn’t stopped writing since.

The Marriage Pact, and some of her works-in-progress, have branched away to Regency Romance and Contemporary Romantic Mysteries, but Wendi will also continue bringing Darcy and Lizzy together again and again in an unusual manner.

Safekeeping is a fun romp filled with mystery, secret agents, and a psychic. Its author has penned several excellent Pride and Prejudice variations. I wouldn't really call this one a P&P variation, though. The characters use those names, but the plot doesn't remotely qualify.

However, it does contain a nod and a wink to the JAFF community because Lizzy (who suffers amnesia at the book's beginning and gradually recovers her memory over the course of the story) turns out to have a hobby as a JAFF writer. The AustenAuthors web site, where a lot of fan fiction really is posted and commented on, also has a significant role. As an avid fan of JAFF for several years, I understood the references, but I'm not certain whether a reader outside the JAFF world would really "get" that aspect of the story.

The writing is sound, and the plot works. While there's a certain amount of suspense and lurking danger, I'd say the tone is generally pretty light. I found it interesting the way the author employs Lizzy's dreams and trance-like episodes that return pieces of her memory as a way to flash back and reveal the backstory leading up to her present circumstances.

I don't think this measures up to the quality of other books I've read by Ms. Sotis and I don't think this is a great read for people who are really into top books in the mystery genre, but I enjoyed it and was glad I bought it.

I struggled to get through this book. I don't know if it was because it was a modern P & P or just the story itself. I liked Gypsy Blessing but this book didn't do it for me. No fault of the author.

This book didn't keep my interest as well as the others I have read by this author. Part of the reason might be that it is really not a variation on P&P but uses the names of many of the characters from that story. It is a modern story with lots of intrigue and twists. Elizabeth's intuition at times is all she has going for her.

This story switches back and forth from actual time to the dreams/nightmares of a victim of amnesia. The story kept giving various names and/or alias to the characters and at times I was not sure which was the actual name. Claire/Elizabeth works in security for a firm that has government files on the making of weapons. Security has been breached and now the story centers on who can be trusted and who has threatened her life by running her off the road and leaving her for dead. She has a broken leg and sprained wrist which limits her defenses when push comes to shove.

It was interesting to read of one memory after another being pulled from dreams or scents, etc. as Elizabeth pieces together her past...and as she falls in love all over again.

A modern romantic thriller/suspense. The story was short enough not to lose steam and the flashbacks of the amnesiac Elizabeth keeps your interest alive and going. The author strategically weaves in Austenesque characters and fan fiction stories in the story. Good story!

A woman wakes up and can't remember who she is. Everyone around seems to share a name with her favorite P&P characters. As she makes "new" friends and recalls the past, she finds her own HEA

This is a very interesting story. It's like a who dunn it but really its about a person who has lost her memory and is slowing regaining it. But in a "spy" context. It's written to be more enjoyable by those who love JAFF as the amnesiac ("Lizzy") loves JAFF and so many of the characters have those name (but are they their real names?!). I love the suspense of this short work. The romance was also well done. I wish we learned more about what the characters really did, who they worked for and what the Villans were up to but it wasn't truly essentially to enjoying the story. If you like JAFF and want something out of the box and modern, you will enjoy this short read. Please read Debbie's awesome review for more details.

Thrilling contemporary romance

A page-turner, inspired by Pride and Prejudice.

This book ventured far from canon, I thought it particularly clever the way the main characters were not Elizabeth and Darcy but yet they were...

We follow the heroine as she woke up in a hospital bed with a sprained wrist, a broken leg and no memory. The road to recovering her memory as nightmares haunt her nights and days, was a nail-bitingly thrilling read. It soon became obvious that her background was not your average housewife...
I was glued to the pages as more revalations were forthcoming, I highly recommend this book!

Something different from this author

A woman named Claire, who is a computer security expert and works as an agent for a government security company, is a victim of a conspiracy to infiltrate her company and steal secrets. The bad guys try to have her killed by running her car off the road, but she survives, although she suffers amnesia and some broken bones. While she's trying to regain her memories, she's guarded by a team of people who know that her memories hold the key to capturing the bad guys. One of the people guarding her is a guy that she instinctively feels strongly connected to.

This "Claire" is called "Lizzy" by everyone, and it turns out that she's always had a bit of an obsession with Pride and Prejudice, and many of the JAFF websites. She's even tried her hand at writing some fan fiction. For this reason, her protection team use field names from the P&P universe. This is the only connection that this book has to the world of Jane Austen.

Although the book is well written, as is everything created by this author, the story didn't grab me. There is some romance, but the heroine of the story seems to be almost incapacitated by lust whenever she gets near her "Darcy.". She's supposed to be a trained operative, one who can function under stress, and maintain control of any situation. Yet, she has absolutely no control at all over herself when dealing with her love interest, and just seems to dissolve into a kind of puddle. Not very admirable.

This author is an automatic purchase for me for her JAFF creations, but this one left me flat. I can't recommend it.

Love it!!

So much fun and excitement and butterflies!! If this were it's own genre, P&P related modern mystery, I would be in hog heaven! Haha I hope there is a sequel!

Not my favorite Wendi Sotis book.

I usually love Wendi Sotis books. I've read and re-read them all. Even in the modern adaptations there was some pride and some prejudice. In this book, there was none. The character names were kind of same, but that's it.
It was well-written and the story unfolded nicely, but I guess if I read a book where names like Lizzy, Darcy, Jane, and Charlotte are used I want some of the Jane Austen story buried in there, too.

Incredibly original and gripping!!!

It grabbed my full attention from the start. Even in the midst of a full-time job schedule I made time to read this.

I really loved the plot, the way it developed, how the characters interact, I can't recommend it enough!

I won this book from the Goodreads giveaway contest. Easy read with good plot twists. If you are a Jane Austen fan you will appreciate how the author incorporated Jane Austen and her characters into the story.

This is a romance and mystery. Had me from the cover and then the first word. Was a fast read as couldnt put it down. Wendi Sotis knows how to keep ones attention and how to weave a web of guessing to the end. Is on my favorite author list. Thanx to Goodreads.
