The sullen, withdrawn, sarcastic teenager. The defensive, wary, and helpless parent. This book builds a bridge between the two sides—with practical and supportive advice on how to: For ever parent who's screamed, what am I going to do with you?, this book finally provides the answer.
I recommend this book highly. It really "hit the spot" when it comes to fulfilling the need I had when I picked it up in the first place. I have one of those angry, manipulative teens who is wonderful and horrible at various times. This book is chock full of tools for communicating with these types of teens. Lots of real life situations are described, as well as real life conversations and what to say/what not to say. Don't wait until your kids are teens to read this. Excellent!
I loved this book. It discusses how to proactively deal with difficult relationships in a way that honors everyone by providing examples and stories. It made me wish that my own family could work with Janet Edgette. I plan to use some of her strategies to improve my own family’s dynamics.
Throughout the book you may find that you're guilty of a few of the things mentioned, making this an eye-opening experience to learn from, and a better parent as a result.
Not that impressed. The author does a good job of describing the mistakes parents make, but some of her advice for dealing with kids more effectively is terrible.
