This is a wonderful guide to San Francisco and provides a pretty clear picture of the assets of the great city. It covers all the national sites and parks in the area. I especially enjoyed the section on Alcatraz which I visited several years ago. An interesting fact is that after the 1906 earthquake, the city's mayor planned to get rid of Chinatown once and for all and drive out the Chinese ethnic groups out the city. The leader of the Chinese community was aware how valuable the real estate was that Chinatown was built on and fought it but selling the mayor on the idea of a "traditional" Chinatown with pagodas and buddings. Why? To promote tourism and lure tourists to visit Chinatown. Chinatown had been a curiosity before and it was played up afterwards. Other sites such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio, Fisherman's Wharf, etc are cover also. Very good guidebook with links to more sites on the internet. The wine valleys of Napa are covered also.

This book is to cover San Francisco and its environs which is an ambitious goal, but it is a worthy effort. I come away from it with many of my questions with answers, and some ideas for the questions that are not answered here. It has some good suggestions and it is well researched. I am reading it without using it for a vacation, so I want to mention that, and I am giving it 5 out of 5 stars.
