At seventeen, the ocean currents and weather patterns of Hailey’s Round, Quebec, are embedded deep within Melanie’s core. Awakened by her supernatural link with the ocean, the Tuatha De Danann’s beautiful Sea King, Manannan, is drawn to Melanie and hungers for her soul. A voice in the wind lures her to the water, and once there, the Sea King begins the process of taking her life.
Hailey’s Round is no longer a safe haven for the teen. Forced to stay away from her beloved ocean, Melanie has nowhere to turn. Her odd mother hasn’t been a part of her life in years, her boyfriend doesn’t believe in the Tuatha De, and the grandfather who raised her is dying.
Yielding to the call of the deep sea and refusing to be marooned, Melanie defies Manannan’s hunger and the obsessive goddess, Rhiannon. Threatened by both deities to keep away from the sea, Melanie has never been more determined to revisit it…

Being a lover of a urban fantasy and and Faërie stories. I found Deep Calling quite interesting. Set in Hailey's Round, Quebec, a young woman by the name of Melanie has always felt the pull of the ocean. But little does she know the sea and land contain ancient creatures just waiting to awaken. Enter the Tuatha De Danann, The Sea King, and Rhiannon, the goddess. Each determined to use Melanie in their own way.
This being the only piece of writing by Lavallee I have read. I got the feel of Lovecraft's, Innsmouth. Secrets and new discoveries waiting around every bend of the little coastal town. With some of Susan Cooper's, The Dark Is Rising, ancient good versus ancient evil thrown into the mix. The story read well, with few exceptions and was paced in much the same way. The few times I found myself losing immersion in the story, something quickly pulled me back in.
One of the few things that bothered me about this novel were the plot holes left in the end. Although the main plot is resolved in a concise and direct way. There are so many interesting characters and little things that are left unresolved. That might make the world feel more full if explored. Although this does leave room for sequels and more world building in other novels.
In the end this is a interesting story, with a unique twist on the urban fantasy and ancient magic/ Faërie genres in paranormal fiction/romance. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in those genres, and to anyone looking for an interesting read that will keep you engaged cover to cover.
