'In My Own Words' evolved out of times shared in front of Johnny Devereux's coal fire when his recollections were freely given and much enjoyed. One day, Johnny asked if I would write his story. It has been a pleasure and a privilege; one he would be happy to know is now being shared with others. Pamela Vass
This book contains the recollections of one man who lived through most of the 20th Century. Many rural working class families lived in primitive and harsh conditions and it was into such a deprived environment that John Devereux was born. He tells of the mean and cramped living conditions that were the lot of many farm workers of that era, and in the injustices of the tied cottage system. He speaks of family tragedy when his mother is confined to an asylum and his father tragically killed in a freak accident. Readers cannot help but be astonished at his ability to survive in the Bomb Disposal Squad during the Second World War when life expectancy was measured in months. In later years, For many years, he found happiness with his wife, Rene and speaks, often with great candour, of their life together in the village he loved, Littleham in North Devon.
For those who knew him, this story will still contain surprises. For those who didn't, it is a fascinating and candid reflection of a life and times slowly receding into history.
