Josiah Rivers' story is that of so many in Delsie, Georgia. He was minding his business in the garage level of Delsie Mall when four police officers assaulted him for no reason. Of course, Josiah did the only thing anyone could do in that position, he fought back. But when it's the four cops' word against him, he has to prove he was just defending himself, if he even gets the chance to defend himself at all.

When a passionate accident leads to the death of one of the officers, it is up to Niyah Steele and her best friend Kali Cleaver to use the powers of the Women of the Black Panthers to make sure Josiah does not become the scapegoat, costing him his life. Niyah, with her ability to relay memories and feelings through touch, and Kali, with her ability to physically feel the emotions around her, try to level the playing field in a game stacked against them. With Josiah behind bars, awaiting a trial that will either end his life as he knows it, or his life in general, Niyah is forced to begin to confront the gifts she has always brushed off as a fortunate mystery. Recognizing that her memories are the only facts that can validate Josiah's experience, and her own, she must figure out why they are the only ones she's never been able to pass on.

Niyah enlists the help of her brother's Jabari and Kota, as well as old friends to try and do right by Josiah, justice quickly becoming synonymous with escape. When their problems follow them outside the confines of Delsie Correctional Facility, the group learns that their journey will be anything but quick, and they are only at the beginning.

PantHERs is a great story with a nice little bow of justice. I enjoyed the humor and authentic voice of the characters. You're pulled into the room as the siblings ponder what is morally right and who gets to decide it. The humor throughout the story feels much like my house growing up.

I'm most drawn to the ties to ancestry that it explores. The powers being passed only to the women and girls of the lineage. Each power; extreme empathy, intuition, already tied to feminity in our society. And how that is used to bring justice to those who have been wronged.

5 stars. Definitely worth the read.
